Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well, and allows you to buy less and buy better.

Carl I bought a pair of Grant Stone Kudu Green Cap Toe boots and the construction blew me away ... Refined perfection...! I couldn't believe it and frankly better stitching and better than Alden..! They are literally perfectly constructed and the Kudu leather is awesome... Again, cost $340 and with coupon I paid $320 and they are better than $600 boots of other manufacturers..! Best boot for the money out there as far as I'm concerned... (Best boot for under $200, Thursdays)

Nice video! The only thing that I'd suggest you take into account is that a lot of the brands with more expensive MSRPs also go on sale far more often. Taylor Stitch often goes on sale for 20-30%, and Taft often goes on sale for 20% as well. And Taylor Stitch will also often do GMTOs that have a 20% discount on top. Grant Stone, from my understanding, rarely goes on sale, and if they do, it is like 15%.
That being said, Grant Stone is the best value in men's footwear right now, no question. They are Alden level at AE prices.

I don't know anything about the Thursday boots other than what you've covered in your videos. But. My Carmina and Carlos Santos chelsea boots are made extremely well, but are feather-light. I don't think the weight alone says anything about quality of construction. The Grant Stone welt looks super tough and ready to get beat up, but I hike around the Sierras and beat up my suede Carminas, they flat out take a beating, AND are super light and look almost like cowboy boots under the right pair of jeans. My point is just that light weight doesn't necessarily mean poor construction or lack of durability. Great video, thanks for this!

  • @satchrocks34

Carl! Always appreciate your videos, especially on quality footwear. You never seem to pull any punches and give people the entire picture every time you discuss them.
On the MiUSA argument: As a Canadian, it's less important to me. And I'm often still paying border handling fees regardless of where the boots are made (just try dealing with the CBSA or international UPS/DHL shipments). So it begins to get less important to me. However, I do understand wanting to support MiUSA boots. You can be more certain the people making the boots are paid a comfortable wage and have more comfortable working conditions. However, it's not a flat "THESE ARE MADE IN CHINA SO THE OWNERS ARE RUTHLESS CAPITALISTS THAT ONLY CARE ABOUT MAKING MORE MONEY!" I'm sure they're able to squeeze more $$ out of a factory in China, but the quality of these boots and the craftsmanship appears to speak for itself.
At the end of they day, I want boots that last, and I don't wanna have to spend a price that I could buy a used car for! Yes, corporate social responsibility means something, but the quality and the craftsmanship is something you CANNOT discount here. People are still people, regardless of the country they live in.
Another argument is lack of skilled people in the US to make quality leather boots. Just because they're made in the DR, Mexico, Spain, etc doesn't inherently mean they are of low quality, as there can be quality bootmakers in those regions too!
It's a complicated answer. But Grant Stone is always on my radar when I'm lookin for new boots

People saying how everything that comes from China is low quality and shit are honestly being bigoted. I'm sure there are really high quality companies in China that go under a Chinese name that no one in America would know about due to a language barrier. And to see some companies that sell boots that are marketed towards America and setting them as the standard for quality in a demographic area seems inaccurate. Grant Stone is such a perfect example of how a Chinese company makes high quality items.

But since the corporations control the media. The propaganda machine just blames China for everything. China is not the first nation facing this in America. There was a trade war against Japan in the 70s and 80s. In the streets of Detroit, an Asian American was ruthlessly murdered because he was believed to be Japanese. I have 3 pairs of GS boots. 1 Ottawa in crimson cxl, 1 Diesel in dune cxl, and I have a pair of Diesel’s in black cxl coming in the next few days. I love my boots. They are perfect in so many ways and they are built to last a long time and since I have a large rotation now, I am glad that I won’t need to resole any of my boots for at least 10yrs for sure. I also have 3 pairs of Thursdays but the GS boots are so much better in so many ways.

i think for cheap and quality stuff thats made in China, they actually provide great price-performace ratio. Yes those 20 dollars "leather" shoes are rubbish, but for 20 dollars, they are better than some 50 dollars shoes which made in some other countries.

I appreciate and enjoyed the review. I plan on ordering a pair when they come back in stock in my size. However, I have to question a couple of the statements you made . Speaking about the Taylor Stitch boots, "but I don't think that they match the quality of these (Grant Stones). Matter of fact, I know that they don't. These are a higher quality boot." In the next breath "I think overall these are a higher quality boot for less." Which is it? You know, or you think? And, if it's that you know, how do you know? I'm not saying that they aren't, and maybe you do know. I'd just like to hear why they are of better quality. Sorry if I'm beating you up over that a bit, but without qualifying the statement you come off as just another guy making baseless statements on the internet. It gives the video, which otherwise comes across as a well done higher quality review, less credibility, imo. Thanks.

( Grant Stone = Alden ) If someone is not familiar with Alden they need to look them up because they start at $500 and Grant stone equals their level of quality. Grant stone is above Allen Edmonds by leaps and bounds. To compare Grant stone to Thursday Boot is kind of misleading. Thursday boots are entry level, good shoes but entry level. Grant Stone is quality. I was also put off for years because they were made in China but quality speaks for itself.

Respectfully, if "human rights issues" are a potential barrier to buying goods made in a certain country, why should anyone buy American-made products? The US has one of the worst human rights records of any Western country right now. I get the concern, but it cuts both ways.

Quality, to me, is irrelevant. To support China right now is crazy. Why the hell can’t they bring this operation over here and have American workers stitch boots together? If their market is China, do you. But don’t expect to market here and not deal with this issue. Grant Stone, their boots should be $100 less than they’re asking just based on the location in China. They are self-glorified Thursday boots. Eff all that.
Ps - I wrote the above at 1 minute in and just saw you addressed a Thursday comparison at $100 less - haha. - told ya

Hi Carl, thank you for your channel; I really enjoy your view on quality products.
    Not this time.
You are right about China; yes, they can produce some quality footwear and a lot of other great quality things.
However, many times leather products are made from cat or dog leather.
And let´s say you don´t care about dogs being slaughtered in awful conditions; after all, these particular boots seem to be made with cow leather from Wisconsin.
Are you really buying stuff from a country that handled the Covid situation the way they did?
I´m furious about China (NOT CHINESE PEOPLE; this has nothing to do with common chinese citizens). They handled the pandemic very poorly, and not only that; they are not taking any responsibility whatsoever.
Since I don´t see world leaders taking any actions against them (it looks like we prefer cheap phones and big TVs instead of standing for what is right), I choose not to buy anything from them if I can avoid it.
    Just my two cents.
