Watching this gave me an idea for my Kelly Kettle- I think I'll make those extra holes. Then I'll make a circular shaped metal wind screen that fits snugly around the inside of the burn chamber. I'll then cut holes in the same position into the wind screen. I will leave one or two tabs sticking outwards so I can rotate the screen while it's running to regulate how much air and how big the holes are. Adjustable from 4 thin slits to wide open holes! Thanks for the original idea!
I think you have done the right thing it makes sense plus you have made the holes professionally I think this modification will benefit the hobo part of the stove great idea mate!
Thank you very much I appreciate that. I've taken a fair bit of criticism over this mod, i find it a massive improvement when using the hobo stove. Its a great ketlle and a great addition to my kit. The kettle works amazingly, but as mentioned when cooking i felt it could work better hence the modification. Thank you once again I appreciate it 🙏
@bushman_smithy I do like my Kelly Kettle, I bought mine with some money left to me when my dad passed. So it has a nit of a special meaning when I use it. The mod works a treat especially when it comes to cooking with it. Although I've had loads of stick from a few people . Have a great weekend buddy
Not bad makes it more ballanced i guess. I modified the kettles chimney a little, stop getting covered in smoke and holds on to exhaust heat a bit longer.. basically a tin can over the stack with slot in one side, so you can direct it away from you, so you dont get covered in smoke, wofks quite well. I have the kelly scout too, i use spirit burner to, that work well also, take a bit longer but works fine, trangia type.
Hi, there thank you for watching and taking the time to leave a comment, it's much appreciated. Yeah my mod worked out well, I'm happy with it. I thought it burned much better. I like the sound of your modification i bet not having the smoke is a bonus. The Scout is a fantastic bit of kit so versatile. Thank you once again atvb, Garry
First thing, my dog would try to steal a stick sticking out of the fire base. Here in Australia, I have the smaller Trekker model with two small holes in the fire base. I have followed the makers instruction of turning holes into the breeze to improve burning. The Trekker suffered a bit when cooking with the 2-piece grill due to the fire base size. The Hobo stove accessory has fixed that problem. A brilliant bit of kit. Thank you for sharing 👍
Thanks for watching I appreciate that, the trekker looks a great bit of kit. I do like my scout even more so after my mod. I'm so pleased Bramble doesn't grab sticks from the stove😂😂 it doesn't bear thinking about 😂😂😂. I tried turning my stove to the wind but it still didn't burn great. Hence the mod, it works for me👍👍👍 thanks again atvb, Garry
Cheers Ben appreciate that mate 👍 I think it worked out better. It definitely burned better on this occasion than the last. It's a great bit of kit I do enjoy using it, thanks again buddy.

Great idea love the kelley kettle but if the wing dies down and not enough air flow it dose struggle to burn I've had it with mine il have to cut some more holes in mine thank u for the tip Great vid
Cheers Shaun thanks for watching buddy, yeah I know what you mean. Last week was a bit of a struggle getting a good burn. So I thought why not give this ago. If you do it yourself I'm sure you will be impressed by the difference. It just makes it more awesome than it already is.
@360OutdoorAdventures yeh I've noticed if u put thick twigs or wood in it struggle to burn sometimes goes out normally use thin wood with that mod it should burn a bit thicker sticks
It will also now need a lot more fuel as it has the extra air. I like the Kelly as it only uses a very small amount of twigs to boil the water and when using the hobo stove top, you can to an extent regulate the heat by turning the hole into the wind or away from it But I guess that where you are, wood wont be a problem and I guess it will also make it lighter 🙂
Hi Lee, thanks for watching and commenting buddy I appreciate that. I found it to burn better on this occasion than in the previous video. In my last video, I had to work the stove, it seemed to burn at the hole but struggle at the opposite side. Yeah, it could burn faster now, but for me that will be better for cooking, plus I could always carry a windbreak to control that better. Also as you mentioned I shouldn't have a shortage of wood thanks again buddy appreciate it 👍
I’d like to see a controlled experiment test video of an unmodified base vs the modified, with boil times and smoke comparison video clips. I’m curious if the extra holes help or hurt performance in the wind and cold.
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. That's a great idea, I would like to see that also. I'll see what I can do, I've a friend with the same stove. So should be able to arrange something. I must admit it got a better burn this time than the previous one, if the wind is an issue I can always carry one of those stove windbreaks. Or if it turns out the mod was a bad decision I could just buy a new base. Thanks again it's much appreciated 👍

Thanks for watching and leaving feedback it's much appreciated. Although that's something I wouldn't completely rule out I think if I take precautions it would eliminate and chances of accidental fires being started. 1) I wouldn't use the Kelly Kettle or any other twig stove in prolonged dry weather. 2) Being mindful of what twigs I'm burning, any pine especially Larch produce lots of sparks. So I would avoid those. Also clearing the ground or even placing a solid base where I plan to use the Kelly Kettle would help keeping things safe. As for sparks coming from the top of the kettle, with only burning twigs any sparks would have cooled before they land. Thanks for raising a valid point, but I think if I followed these steps things should stay safe.
sorry while adding more ventilation will make it burn faster the size of your wood is all wrong, you have so much wood left after the boil you could cook a meal too, its meant for small twigs and minimal burn to boil water.
Hi there, thanks for watching and leaving a comment it's much appreciated. I completely understand what you are saying and agree. Great point regarding the wood I used and having wood left over, enough to cook on. Normally that's what I would be doing, probably cooking lunch. My main reason for the mod was for exactly that. The previous time I used it the material I had at hand was slightly damp. I had no breeze making for a difficult burn. On this occasion I used the same twigs I gathered the previous week and again no breeze and the stove burned brilliantly. I got a boil in no time at all and I'd I wanted to cook, I could have done so without working the stove. If I find the wind to be an issue I can carry one of those folding camping stove windbreaks to control things better. I hope this helps explain my method in my madness and thank you once again you raised a valid point 👍👍
It seemed to burn better this time, than the previous week. I understand smaller twigs are supposed to be used, I thought I would try and make it more specific to my needs. More so as a hobo stove rather than just using the kettle. I know on the video I only boiled water, but it was just to test how the mod performs. My first impression is I'm happy with it, it done what I hoped. Thanks for taking your time to leave a comment it's much appreciated 👍
You would get a faster boil with smaller sized twigs/kindling- a jet of flames will rise out of the top very quickly with air hole facing into wind. I notice you nearly burnt your fingers- I reckon you just needed to get to know how to use it better. Just my opinion. Best wishes.
Hi there thanks for watching and leaving feedback it's much appreciated. Yeah it just shows how one moment of now paying attention can lead to accidents. Thankfully I corrected myself and placed the kettle down correctly. I tried everything you mentioned on previous times using the kettle, getting a boil wasn't the main issue really. The main problem I had was when it came to cooking, it just was so difficult to get a good clean burn. I was getting a flame one side of the burner, the side of the hole. Adding the extra hole has definitely helped resolve that issue. Thanks for watching and leaving feedback it's always appreciated havean awesome weekend 👍
@danieljones2183 Thanks for watching and commenting 👍👍 I think it will be ok if the wind becomes an issue I think a camping stove windbreak would help. I have a few similar hobo stoves the Firebox stove in particular and I've had no issues. Fingers crossed this works out similar.
