John Betjeman: Architecture of Bath

- Here, Betjeman takes on the persona of a property developer to satirically critique the architectural trends taking hold in the 60s.
His comments are just as relevant today. Planners over the years have committed urban vandalism.
He worked at The Architectural Review from 1930 to 1935 as assistant editor, following the magazine's publication of some of his freelance work.
He was a founding member of the Victorian Society and a passionate defender of Victorian architecture.
Insightful, articulate and witty; Betjamen at his best.
Bath is a gorgeous Georgian jewel and England's most elegant place !!
55 years later and bath is one of the largest UNESCO world heratage sites of pure classical architecture while 1960 modernism is one of the most disliked and endangered archetectural styles in Britain. Oh the sweet joy of irony and long live classicism.
John could have had a highly successful side career as a stand up comic. This is hilarious (and all true).
this man was enlightened.
I used to show this to my 12-year-old Latin students. I hope they were enlightened!
One of Britain's all-time greats.
Love this very witty
John Betjeman was a great poet and a funny man !! :-) :-) :-)
Damn shame these modern buildings
Great vid 👍🏻
Presumably someone agreed with Betjeman's analysis, as Bath College's "buttocks" now have a couple of big trees to spare their blushes.
The rise of the proles is well described here.
Quite an amusing impersonator. But he says ‘I’ like an ‘ee’ sound.
The people who designed such horrible constructions do not have to live in them
Modern Bath....
Just FKN awful......
