As a foreigner, I was convinced that the extreme importance placed on the prom night was largely a movie invention. Finding out that you guys do this for real was almost unbelievable.
I bought a prom dress, decided it looked too much like a wedding dress, and then bought a different dress. Years later I wore the original dress for my actual wedding.
Your point about voting for disabled kids as inspiration hit really hard for me. As a mentally disabled person, yes, you should absolutely treat those kids like everyone else. We dont need to be pitied we need to be respected
It always annoyed me even from a young age when adults would draw attention to a disabled or impaired or homeless person and say "aww, don't you feel bad for that person?" Like, I guess, but also they're just a person. It's weird that we're supposed to feel sorry for them rather than just treat them like a normal person. I mean if had some kind of disadvantage that's all I'd want.
Agreed. If people wanna make a disabled person prom king/queen, they should do it because the person is genuinely cool. Not to stroke their own savior complex and pretend they’re a good person.
14:40 - 15:10 THANK YOU. IIRC, electing handicapped and Down's kids as King/Queen started in the 1990s and took off from there. It's hard to tell the difference between honoring a kid who deserves it ... and tossing someone a bone out of pity to ease your own conscience. I was a huge nerd Dancing Melvin. If I had "won" Most Popular or Best Looking, I would've known full well people were laughing at me, not with me.
There was a kid with down syndrome on the football team a few years older than me that the other teams would always let score a touchdown. Always felt wrong to me. His mother ran a program in town for disabled kids and non-disabled kids to do stuff together and tutor or whatnot. She would always give assemblies at our middle school and she always rubbed me the wrong way and came off as fake. Had short hair and gave off strong Ellen vibes. I've heard from kids who actually volunteered that she was kinda bitchy to disabled kids and volunteers alike. I really believe she used her son and the program to come across as a saint while actually getting off to having power over the feeble. Not to mention only her disabled son was scoring "touchdowns". In the assemblies she presented these touchdowns as real, but in a kinda santa claus way where even us middle schoolers got the gist but the special ed kids might not. Bizarre!
In Slovakia there is basically the same thing as prom called Venček. It's a dance party for kids finishing 9th grade of school( the kids are about 14yo). You find a partner usually from your class and you all have dance lessons to prepare you for it.
I live in Europe and we have a... kinda similar thing? But it's very much a "you graduated! yay!" kinda deal instead of glam and drama My school also had a "mini-prom" (that was the actual name, yes) for the 12/13 year olds. Too young to hit the dating dread, but old enough to want to pretend to be an adult
We have a prom in Finland fir third year high school students. It's to celebrate the end of classes, before the cramming starts. It's called "Elders day". The seniors dress in rococo style, with wigs and big dresses. There's a feast, performances, and the dance includes period accurate dances like polonaise. It can be a huge headache for families with less money. Those elaborate dresses be expensive.
Same. I brought my purse, had pockets, and am generally responsible, so I wound up the phone guardian for all the girls in my friend group that decided to do things where they might lose said phones.
@@duderitoz6953 Dude you're so fucking cringe if you need substance to have fun you need to get some help bro. I done all that and more crazy shit while sober. And I remember it years later can't say the same thing for my drinking and drug using friends.
I hate events where you can't actually talk to people, you have to scream in their ear or pretend that you understand what they are saying and laugh while dancing. The most mind numbing and boring experiences, that's why on my prom i just sat outside talking to my friends.
I haven't been to prom yet but that is what happened on homecoming and I'm literally known for being the quiet girl no one can hear so it's just like 3 times worse with loud music in the background I have no chance of talking to my friend and it's usually really boring for me or I start having like a nervous breakdown
@@WeiRd0_M3L0N i usually just go outside and sit on a bench with my friends, that is if they want to sit outside instead of partying. But it usually ends up being way more fun.
@@WeiRd0_M3L0N as someone that actually did go through a nervous breakdown because I got dragged to go late-night clubbing, despite my many, *many* protests, I can relate. Especially in an environment like that, and you basically convince yourself you're the weird one in the room despite the fact you didn't want to be there in the first place
Yes, and it turns out that the gay llamas life-savings is just like five dollars. Because a gay llama is definitely a broke bitch. Lol, so it's kind of a really low ball offer for Tucker to wear a prom dress 😂
As someone who totally skipped out on prom because 1) It cost too much 2) I had no friends 3) I didn’t care (much to my mother’s distress), watching this made me feel better lol
@@xChaosFlower itd be harder to forget if you did go. see all those people having fun with their friends, reminding you you dont have any. not a good time
Same. My grade had a prom a few months ago, and the thought of actually going there was so far away from my image of self. I'm not someone who would go to a place with people I'm not friends with, dance to bad pop music (or dance in general), wearing clothes I'll never wear again, with a random girl i probably didn't find, getting drunk from booze i find discusting (i only drink light alcohol, or alcohol drowned with sugary fruit flavours). And we haven't even gotten to stuff like losing my still intact virginity, or drugs (god forbid). I mean some people probably enjoy the company of their friends, and i would certainly love to have my own customized suit, but other than that i find it a pointless shitshow.
@user-kl1ii2ls3f It's part of the "these specific things happen in this specific order, and if you don't do them in this order, or don't do them 'correctly' you have failed and will amount to nothing in life". It's part of the pressure to find a person and make the night perfect. Adults saying "this will be the best night of your life" and "you'll regret it if you don't go" is a light version of "get your shit together asap". It's like dipping your toes into everything expected of you.
Yeah it's so weird. They'll complain if you try to date someone or get piercings or what have you... and they'll start asking if you are gonna get married any time soon once you're legal. It's a strange, toxic, and kinda gross way of treating kids and young adults.
@@artistdudebro yeah! also the idea of having to have found your calling by the time you graduate. it's phrased as if prom is that one last time you can really have fun with your friends before you have to start being "serious"
I graduated in 1991. I did not get invited to prom. Three of my friends and I got dressed up, went to a fancy dinner, then went bowling in our formal wear. Then we went back to my house, put on our PJs and drank cocktails while watching a movie. It was a blast.
That's the kinda shit I did to go watch Barbie with a girl I wasn't even dating at the time. I just felt like over preparing for stuff and she followed, it was pretty cool.
Honestly same. I just hung out with my 3 friends the whole time and had a great time. We stayed for 2 hours then went home sober and got to sleep. And I’m very introverted.
As an introvert - your best parties in life are going to be a bunch of friends talking in one of a few circles around the house. Even if you go to, idk, your job's trade organisation's local chapter's ball, it's going to evolve into a dozen circles of people sharing a conversations. This is how the adults really do it.
You're right, they are really interesting for a Brit like myself. Tbh I'm k i n d a glad we don't have it. The thought of dancing in a school with a bunch of people you don't like makes me severely uncomfortable 😭
50 here. I still have my prom dress from 1992 & 1993. My grandma was wonderful at sewing and made my prom dresses. They were not only totally different than everyone's almost the same store bought dress that cost hundreds of dollars. But they fit me like a glove and only cost about $40 for material/decorations. Labor was paid for with hugs. She was so talented (she's still alive but no longer sews) that I was once a bridesmaid for my aunt & uncle. For that wedding I was gifted a beautiful dress to wear in ceremony. My grandma was so amazing, that after that wedding, she took apart that dress and made me a whole new dress, including gloves & a purse! I saved them not only for sentimental purposes, but my daughters wore them when they were little, playing dress up.
a 200 dollar dress in 1952 would be a 2500 dollar dress now adjusted for inflation. kind of weird youre using the price tucker mentions in the video without thinking about the inflation fact. i mean i doubt that kids wore dresses that cost a few hundred dollars back then
Didn't go to prom, but a big group of my friends and I put together a "Not Prom" the same night. Which was essentially everything but the dance, we went all dressed up to a riverwalk/amusement park instead. But my mom was smart about the dress. We had a cruise set for after I graduated and whatever my "prom" dress was, would also be my dress on the cruise for formal night. And now that I'm an adult I've used it a few times for a theater performance I used to do because it fit the character so well. So gotta say, at least I got a massive amount of use out of mine. It's literally falling apart at this point in my life lol.
the whole "voting disabled kids for prom queen/king" is so gross to me bc i'm disabled and autistic and apparently, a bunch of popular kids were planning on nominating me for prom queen/king. they did it to humiliate me. it's disgusting
Like, it would be cool if someone disabled happened to win, but like, high schoolers are fucking mean and they do it to be mean. The whole "pity vote" thing. If it happens organically, that's different.
Well our homecoming king was my friend Tye, he happens to be one of the special education students. He ran willingly and was voted in because he's just a chill and funny dude, so not all disabled kids who get homecoming or prom king/queen are voting in as a prank or with cruel intentions. I feel I need to add that I am also autistic. I'm high functioning/gifted.
As a 17 year old. Prom is weird. I spent $35 on a ticket, got pizza at my friends house, and then went to a glorified garage for 4 hours and tried to get the DJ to play weezer with my buddies.
Honestly prom was awesome for me. I think the ticket was $35 for me too. It was indoor and outdoor, and there was a boba stand with pretty flower reusable cups, that pretzel place, an ice cream truck in the building where the dance floor was at, a mini taco station, pole tables up stairs upstate’s, a picture station, other drinks, and a karaoke place as well. It was pretty fun I mostly stayed at the karaoke place though. I was kind of surprised when some of the people said it was “mid” I guess it wasn’t for them or something.
I have noticed people that have been together or are high school sweet hearts have this stoic vibe to them. It's not pretentious it's just like, " i've already done what society expected for me to do" while everyone else is have an existential crisis yet in thier early 20's
I have a disabled friend who had complained to me that a lot of they’re“friends” don’t feel like friends and they feel like they hang around them because they feel bad.
Oh god, that brings back memories from my school days as an autistic kid. Later on I did learn that they were such good friends, they bullied out a kid who SA'd me but the school didn't remove for some fucking reason and they never actually made it clear they knew what happened and supported me.
Oh God. I was the Dancing Melvin. During my youth, I loathed the idea of prom. I was a shy, reclusive nerd type, had only a few friends, no girls, no game. My mom forced me to go to prom because "I would regret it if I didn't". Went stag, had a shitty time all the way until I decided to let go. Ended up being the life of the party, pulling everyone's dates, and just having a ball (all while completely sober, didn't have my first sip of booze until I was 19). That was a wild time. Still didn't want to go though.
Dude that part reminded me of myself too 💀 but in the bad way… 😬 I did NOT stop, even when people eventually threw food at me, recorded me, posted me, harassed me… and little sophomore me still did NOT stop 😭. (Homecoming though, not prom.)
Class of 2020, no prom from my school due to Covid. Watching this made me feel better, i don't think i would've enjoyed it but ive received a lot of sympathy from family, "oh you missed the best night of your highschool life" or something. Now i know it was just another social event with a fancy title that i probably would have suffered at.
It would've sucked. My prom was in 2018, and it was one of the most boring events I've ever went. Even though I'm not American, our prom felt like an American one (besides the beginning when we arrived at the hotel, where roma gypsies played awful music that we had to give them money for their music. It's common for this in the Balkan). Plus it was raining that night.
Tell me about it. My parents owned a tavern and liquor store when I was in high school. Half the kids from my school showed up at the store for supplies. We robbed them blind😂😂😂
I was a gothy nerd in the 90's that didn't go to prom because I thought it was stupid. BUT if I had, I would have looked like I was going to a Beetlejuice wedding.
I never liked wearing fancy clothes so whenever it was prom or homecoming, I’d just dress for the theme because why would I show up in a stuffy suit when I could be dressed as a cowboy or as a grandpa on vacation in Hawaii.
Where I live, people drop off corny posters at your house to ask for dances 😂 it’s actually so fun figuring out a way to get their address, designing a poster with your friends, and then doorbell ditching them at 10:00 on like a Thursday night and waiting for them to acknowledge it
the tangent about when disabled teens are prom king/queen with the virtuesignaling. a term for that phenomena exists, its called "inspiration p*rn" (censoredd bcuz idk what youtube comments allow xD), and its where people use disabled people simply existing as this whole "youre so inspirational" and its like,,,just a guy buying milk or going on a walk. its when disabled people are used for "well if this person with a disability can do this thing, then you can too!" it puts disabled people down, many disabled people dont like when people do it. im really glad you brought it up in the video
Like yes. As a person with autism and mental illness, there is a difference in between seeing that life may be harder for someone/ and respecting them and pitying someone. I have learned that in my experience it can be hard to learn the difference, but I like to break it down as sympathy versus empathy.
I spent my night comforting a friend who was crying due to the emotional stress, overstimulation, and anxiety they got due to being at prom. We sat on the floor in the hallway outside the venue reading webcomics together, so all in all it was a good time I’d say lol.
Had prom in 2013. My prom dress is in its garment bag stored away in a plastic bin. It’s been occasionally lent out to daughters of family and friends for quinceañeras, sweet sixteens, and prom.
You took the words right out of mouth when it comes to disabled kids getting voted for prom king/queen. I’m autistic, and I’ve been afraid of being infantilized ever since I was a teen. There were a few times where other teenagers coddled me.
I don't remember if anyone got voted prom king or queen at my prom. Which is perfect for me because I have already declared myself the Prom Supreme Leader (Su-prom-e Leader, if you will) lol. Oh god my Junior prom was 6 years ago.
As a girl who went through prom and saw her sister's and female cousins' proms, the "in-style" for dresses changes all of the time. One cousin had the fluffy, big ballroom style dress in neon, another had a more A-line cut in hot pink. By the time I had prom, the two-piece cut was in and the fluffy dresses were on their way out. Three years later, my sister's class was 100% the two piece or a dress with lots of cuts.
Prom is just depressing. The peak of your early adulthood is a glorified party where you spend exuberant amounts of money for a night you’ll probably not remember.
I'm in the "I'd MUCH rather attend a rock concert than prom" boat. Rock concerts I don't have to pay hundreds of dollars for an outfit as well. I can have more fun with fashion as well, wearing either a t shirt and jeans, or a skirt and t shirt, or jeans and a nice glam top. I can layer with a denim jacket or leather jacket or even swap out the jeans for plaid pants. I know I'm guaranteed to enjoy the music because obviously I only go to rock concerts where the bands interest me. Instead of eating overrated fancy food I can have a burger or pizza or a hot dog. I can't fully explain it, it's just for fun for me overall.
In South Africa we have a matric dance/ matric farewell and it's basically the same thing as prom. Parents shill out a buttload of money for their 17yr old kids to dress up in fancy suits/dresses and everyone treats it like it's something you absolutely cannot afford to miss. Our matric farewell is in October and I was debating on whether or not I was gonna go, but I honestly just can't be bothered to ask some girl that I can barely hold a conversation with to come with me and sit there in our overpriced outfits that will put my parents under even more financial stress just so I can say I was present at my matric farewell. It just doesn't seem worth it and this video has helped me feel more secure in my choice, so thanks :)
As a fellow South African who's been to two matric farewells: its not worth it. It was boring, the food was meh, I only still have one picture of the 50 I had taken, I haven't even looked at my dress ever since because it just brings up guilt over how much money my dad shilled out over this piece of crap that I literally wore once. Rather have a party with friends that night. Like you can dress up a little fancy if you'd like but don't believe the hype.
I'm also from South Africa but I'm homeschooled luckily so I don't even have to make that decision. Even if I had the option I would for sure opt out. I can't deal with that shit
Ha! At our prom, the DJ tried to play "Jesus Take the Wheel", and our prom (deep, deep in the heart of the Bible Belt, mind you,) booed that mf so hard that he broke and finally switched the song. Only a few times have I been proud of my peers here, but that was one of them. 😂
Tugg, inspiration porn is a real thing for the disability community, you're right on the exploitive nature on chronically ill/disabled students during prom season. Disabled people and chronically ill people are people, not props for feel good stories. Thank you.
I'm not young enough and not yet in a wheelchair but I would be insanely angry about that sort of patronizing crap. Just do it now before the wheelchair.
It's crazy how much money people spend on proms and how important it is to them😭 Here in Russia we have "graduation" where everyone dresses(it's not the end of life if you had that dress in your wardrobe already), there is a programme (teachers are trying to make you miss school), than everyone waits till a teacher announce their name so they can get a certificate (what they finished school), when some kids go to bowling/beach/rent house, but some kids don't, it's pretty optional. Maybe afterwards parents will buy you something cool. That's all.
As someone who was pranked pretty badly at prom, by people I thought were friends (and one I loved dearly) yeah prom is honestly pretty crappy. Gained a kind friend from the prank though, and she’s stayed my friend since then. We’ve just gotten our degrees!
Oh those are horrible people! Some boys flirted with me in highschool, i thought they liked me turned out it was just a oart of their "truth or dare" challenge. It sucks
In no disrespectful way, how are you gonna say prom as a whole is crappy because you got pranked? I get saying that it was crappy for you but as a whole? Nah I don't get it
@@brandoncole5533because lots of other people like them have had crappy experiences. It seems like for most people it is crappy in some form or as a whole for them. If you had a great experience, good for you. Not everyone thinks of it as you do.
@@liamcollinson5695 your schools so terrible for that, but i'm glad you were still able to have fun that night. also how do they even verify? do they hire private investigators to peer into the lives of all the students? do they only let pairs of one boy and one girl get tickets, so it's like the prom is exactly 50% boys and 50% girls?

My little brother had his "Dancing Melvin" moment at prom and it was glorious, haha! That kid was in the basement every night for the two weeks leading up to prom, practicing the Melbourne shuffle over and over until he had it down perfectly. He absolute crushed it. They cleared out a circle for him and everyone went wild. You killed it, little bro!!
i was bribed by multiple people to go to freshman homecoming, and i left after 45 minutes. i cannot see the hype, highschool dances are boring af and honestly pretty stupid
I went to only once, but only because the school forced me to. A teacher threatened me to go to the dance or I would get a 0 for participation for that semester in their class. They said they were worried that I wasn't socializing enough. I went and the teacher forced me to work the front table handing out name cards and taking cash. I turned to them and asked "You just didn't want to do your job, huh?" She just shrugged and effed off to her car for the rest of the night.
In the Midwest we all had to learn square dancing for prom Edit: I’m 23, my prom dress as well as my homecoming dress are just in my closet. Never touched.

Same situation, but dude ya gotta keep that dork energy up 😂 like last night she was working on a wooden clock shaped like an owl. I was finishing up a metal model of K2-SO from rogue one. All the while Moon Knight was playing on the TV for our 3rd rewatch. Truly a happy life
There’s this video on UA-cam where a guy asks a girl out to prom Medieval style with some fake horses, 2 other dudes as knights and the main guy as the king
More so than the horrible pay, the horrible medium-humans, and the general societal neglect, hosting a prom each year has got to be the worst part of being a high school teacher... by far
I am 40. My prom was in 2002. It was altered to be a competition gown to competitive Latin dance for around 8 years (my profession at the time). It is now in storage in case other family wants it in the future. I wore my great aunts prom dress as my wedding reception dress. Getting it cleaned was hard because it was from the 1950's and delicate. Took 3 dry cleaners to find one to do it, but I looked beautiful. My sister also wore that dress to her prom. Classic styles never die.
I wasn’t going to go to my prom until my coworker said “eh probably won’t be that fun but I went and got kicked out for doing coke in the bathroom and that was a fun night after. Go along and have as much fun as you can.” Words of wisdom
I went to prom in my junior year (alone, mind you) and it was honestly just ok. If not incredibly awkward because everyone was on their phones instead of dancing. And our reward for going was, you may or may not be surprised, a martini glass. They gave 17 and 18 year olds martini glasses.
Whaaa? I seriously don’t understand why some schools have proms like that 😅 but to be fair when I went to prom and homecoming and people were dancing and in the middle people were twerking and stuff like they were in the club (no shade) but it’s a school dance so it’s kinda awkward and scary 💀
They gave us shot glasses as a party favor at my prom. It was truly baffling how anyone approved that purchase for a bunch of teens. I’ve never used mine (I don’t drink alcohol), but I have kept it as a novelty item.
We have something vaguely similar in Finland. It's called the "Elder days dance". On elder day, third year high school students celebrate the end of classes by dressing in rococo style. There's a feast, some performances and the dance which will include period spedific dances like polonaise.
When I was around 15 my school organized a very little "prom" during the day lol. I came casually dressed without a "date" and stayed with friends at the buffet or playing with balloons. Naturally didn't dance but it was fun
I hated prom. I never went. Good thing too, because I remember we had like all these rules - no kissing, no hugging, yadda yadda yadda…no alcohol, of course… …also, you have a point. As a weird kid with autism I feel like they’d vote me and some other kid in as prom king and queen to make themselves feel better, so...
Same lol. I have autism and there wasn't even anyone in the school I would want to ask out and it wasn't like I had any plans of going anyways. Afterwards I heard that it was just a bunch of drunk shirtless smelly boys having a mosh pit and they even voted in a kid with down syndrome or something. Basically even worse then even this video makes prom sound.
Yeah, I find the no pda rules kinda fucking stupid. It's especially stupid at my school bc the school does stuff that encourages affection. They deadass sell flowers for students to give each other on Valentine's day, but the second you hug or hold hands with your partner, "If I sEe It AgAiN, yOu'Re BoTh SuSpEnDeD"
Who tf STAYS at the prom?!? It’s a free night out with the object of your teenaged desire, usually with alcohol. Your parents think you’re at the prom. You stop by the prom just long enough to get your picture taken (proof you WERE there), then proceed to the actual activities. You & your three best friends split a hotel room, drink till you puke, somebody loses their virginity. It’s a rite of passage. It’s a memory you’ll look fondly back on. It’s only as boring as you & your friends are. ✌🏼😘❤️
im from russia and we have two big events on the end of the last school year: "last bell" and actual prom. last bell is held by school, we have huge concerts where kids of all ages sing, dance and congratulate graduates, then the last ring rings (by first graders) and the day is over. so its kind of about a circle of life: at the first day of school first graders and last graders ring the first ring, on the last day of school they ring the last bell. proms are different from school to school. we had an official part at school (so all the teachers and local government could congratulate us) took our school diplomas and had a trip to a huge restaurant by rental bus (best part of the night because we could choose our music ourselves). in the restaurant we had a fancy dinner with other school graduates, a party zone (that was literally empty the whole night with only a dj in it) and a small yard where someone somehow found a way to bring weed (pretty strange experience to smoke with a random people ive never seen before who went to another school all dressed like they are in some disney fantasy movie). me and best friend actually found a room where all the teachers and parents were drinking, it had karaoke in it so we sang sad songs about war and russian army and danced for drunk boomers and somehow they were absolutely okey with it (few of them actually cried on the song "officers" by oleg gazmanov). and then we were packed again in the rental bus and went to a huge concert in the city park held by the local government. there were actually good artists, but i were too tired to participate in it. every city in russia each year makes this huge type of concerts for graduates only. the craziest concerts for graduates are in saint-petersburg, they literally turn the whole city in the prom show. cities are fighting for best singers to perform on those concerts, so if you live in big city you will def see a concert of the top-artists from russian spotify.
In Germany we had something similar. Once we got our Abitur (needed to study at uni) we organised a ball, we saved up the money needed and made it open for family, friends and the students. Afterwards we had a party for sudents and their friends. It's basically celebrating that we finally after 12-13 years of studying and 3 years of preparing for the most intense exams, we finally managed to do it and get the Abitur.
I can’t even fit into my prom dress anymore! My mom refused to get me a dress unless I could use it in college or some other early adult events. Literally wore it once, now its hung up in a closet 1.5k miles away in my parents house. Good thing it was on sale for only $40
The anxiety I feel as a person thinking about hoco/prom, I haven’t even been to one yet, but imagining myself there and obsessing over what could go wrong like I managed to single-handedly ruin an experience I’ve never experienced 😗
Hoco in my school is pretty chill. We're in walking distance from a lot of stuff, so if you don't drive you typically go to the dance for an hour or so then walk down to somewhere for food with friends. It's cool, most kids just wear button ups or cute dresses
I’m going to be super honest, making it a fun night out with friends instead of stressing over getting a date and doing all of that is SO MUCH BETTER. Just make it a night you’ll enjoy, not what society necessarily expects!
I do have my "prom dress", and I'm very glad you asked so I have an excuse to mention it. It was custom made (which was cheaper than stores were charging) and I've worn it to other formal parties, including other proms. (I'm 25 btw)
5:49 The tuxedo is in fact a more practical alternative to the earlier option, the morning suit, i.e. white tie. The tux essentially got rid of the tails, extravagant lapels & cravat which for the late 19th century made it the model of practicality for very formal events.
White tie is a black suit with tails a white tie and waistcoat. A morning suit is the same cut as the above without satin lapels. It must not be black, the coat and trouser do not have to match and is worn with a straight tie. The waistcoat does not have to match neither the tie, the coat nor the trousers. Addendum: Never split your tails when sitting down, only the hoi palloi do that. You can press your tails later, use a low temperature on your iron. You can never smooth out your reputation from that faux pas. Anybody who doesn't know this doesn't matter. The more you know.
My mom cared about my prom way more than I did and kept my dress for years. That thing sat in the back of a closet, never again seeing the light of day. In my late 20s she finally donated it to a school collecting them.
I recently was in a Salvation Army with my mom and she had a flashback to her buying her prom dress. She got a wedding dress there for fairly cheap and dyed it purple in the bathtub at home.
I'm going to prom with my best friend next year, and the literall only reason we have planned this is because I'm making our dresses. Because firstly, we're both goths even if my friend doesn't ususally dress goth. Secondly, I already make clothes, and third, just for fun really, because they're going to be around while I'm making them (thats probably going to be more fun than prom tbh) and so we know that we have something we enjoy wearing. I don't even really go to that school anymore, but we're going together for kicks and giggles Edit: I also want to mention we're in the UK, I don't know what the hell homecoming is, and suprisingly, we do have prom over here
I went to one Highschool dance as a teen and that was prom. Highschool dances didn’t really appeal to me back then and tickets were RIDICULOUSLY expensive. Didn’t even plan on going but on the second to last day, my crush/friend back then asked me. He was a slow learner but always tried his best in school. A teacher offered to buy him a prom ticket if he passed an exam. And he did! I was proud of him but got very confused when on my walk home from school, he came running down the side walk shouting my name. He was out of breath and collapsed on my front yard. Then he sat up, looked so excited and asked me out to prom. I laughed so hard as I helped him up. It wasn’t a fancy (overpriced) show but dang I didn’t care, he was so earnest about it I couldn’t say no as we both started laughing about how he really waited until the last minute. So we went to prom. Kinda over hyped, again overpriced but it was nice hanging out with friends and free food. And then an ambulance showed up in the last hour cuz a student council member nearly ODed as the other members tried to run drunk through some rose bushes. TLDR; Prom is kinda a scam but if you wanna feel kinda fancy for a few hours, you do you.
I'm French and in 2017, my ninth grade class and I went to the United States and participated in a prom night, our teachers loved it so much that they decided to organize one in my high school, I'm really glad I didn't participate, not only me and my family were able to prevent my grandmother from committing suicide, but all the roasted chicken intended for the guests was unfit for consumption and sent kids to the hospital....
My mom is 62, still has her prom dress. We've always been too poor for those kind of dresses you were talking about, so if we get something special, even though it's cheap, we keep it. She also repurposed it as a bridesmaid's dress and when i was a teen, i wore it for something but i can't remember what. I can still fit in it and I'm 40, she was the same until recently. It's cheap but well made and she chose a design that's more simple and timeless. It was around '79, so there was also a matching big floppy garden hat. ( Mia Farrow in The Great Gatsby type.) We both thought prom was stupid and didn't care.
the only reason im for prom king and queen not being a popularity contest is actually what happened when i was senior. a kid in my grade had a heart attack during his usual morning run and it was devastating for the whole school, he had no history of heart problems before. he and his girlfriend got voted in and i honestly cried. i didnt even know the guy very well
As a 37 year old who still has her prom dress I can say I think I got more use out of it then most. I have worn it three times after prom. Two times for weddings and once for Halloween.
I always dreamed of my future prom/homecoming and my dream dress. Mostly because of movies that made it seem like high school dances were the pinnacle of young adult hood... Then I became an extremely anxious and awkward kid who wore glasses and was over weight. I asked people and they all declined. Even my friends didn't want me to tag along with them in their friend groups that were going dateless. It also became increasingly clear that about any dress would be too expensive (all of my friends also planned to get their hair and nails done professionally.) I just decided to stay home and cry. I felt very bitter about it for a while. Now I believe it's a completely ridiculous tradition. I wish I could go back and tell young me to think about other things.
Please don’t lose hope! The thing about high school is that it’s all a learning experience, whether good or bad we are still learning about life, And thanks to that we can start living a better life for the future But don’t lose hope on any of that, it may have been a bad night but because there are gonna be better and more fun nights in the future! And you’re gonna find the right people and you’re going to meet amazing friends with whom you’re going to have an amazing time no matter what event you go to So don’t lose hope on your dreams, but do build them or achieve them on your means! I don’t have anymore words to say except for telling you to make your own fun! Don’t let anyone else determine your happiness and if something seems fun to you go ahead and fly to it! There are going to be people who will agree with you and follow you, but don’t follow anyone else’s definition of “fun” , at least one you don’t agree to I wish you the best!
@@alexamarin1314 I appreciate the kind words and I agree that the younger years were about learning. I learned that prom and homecoming are pointless and stupid traditions that have no real reason for still being around and I had to learn it in a very rough and sad way. I appreciate all the optimism, but what I have learned from all my experiences isn't as optimistic. I still have hope, I wouldn't be here if I didn't have any, but it's a painful truth. I still have fun but I don't hold any silly delusions that all of my hopes and dreams will come true anymore. A lot of the whole, "just be happy!" "You just need to stay positive!" Mindset is easier said than done for a lot of people who struggle with mental illness.
I’m really sorry about that, I was also the “weird” kid at school, which just meant that I had social anxiety and probably wasn’t conventionally attractive, but that’s just so WEIRD, right? lol yeah I never went to prom and thought I’d never get a cool bf like the girls at my school. I felt stupid and unloved. But cut to today, me with an amazing partner and us just figuring life out together. Those kids called me ugly and weird in school, he calls me beautiful and special. I never thought I’d be able to achieve a happy life like this because people made it seem like I wasn’t good enough. Those are the people that peak in high school, and after learning what their current life is up to, I’m like…why did I ever feel lesser than them? Sure they were the stuff back then, now they’re just sad and want attention. Or maybe they’re in jail, or just miserable in general. Point is, high school is a learning experience. For me and you, it was tough. For others, it was a dream. But what matters is how you’ve grown since then and what you’re doing now for yourself. I hope you truly love yourself because you’re incredible and strong
My senior prom was horrifying when I found out my crush only asked me out to prom as a dare from the other popular boys. He decided to break the news in front of our entire English class a week later. Still very hurt by it 6 years later.
In Pakistan we have a vaguely similar tradition of farewell, it's to saying goodbye to the students graduating, but due to covid ours got cancelled and I was very angry about it back then but now I think it was a blessing in disguise.
I am so glad I just wore a tux to prom. I’m a cosplayer so I can probably find some other use for it later down the line but buying a dress seemed like an actual nightmare. I saw my classmates going nuts over them and I’m just sitting here with my tux that my grandma got off of Facebook marketplace
i spent 90% of my prom sitting alone on the second floor balcony overlooking the dancefloor because my shoes IMMEDIATELY tore up my ankles like teething baby tiger sharks. i’m not bitter.
The only things memorable of prom, in my case, were, getting to clock out of work early, getting ready for prom, and going to a park neaby with a friend after prom ended.
The pictures part got me lmao. There’s NOTHING like taking dozens upon dozens of pictures, in the rain, at the house of a guy you dont really know (I went stag with a couple of friends), all so everyone’s mom can AWWWWWWWWWWWW for the next 10 years. Edit: I WAS THE DANCING MELVIN OH MY GODDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!! Also, i spent my after prom in the basement of another guy I kinda knew, and several other dudes. We were all too exhausted/lame to drink (even with abudant access to booze), so we just played games and joked around all night. Got donuts in the morning, it was great.
It drives me nuts a few celebrities had more than one dress and now everyday people are putting themselves into debt copying it. My friends daughter is getting married, has a stunning dress but bought a second shorter one that looks cheap af and I don’t know how she’s going to dance in it because it just covers her butt. Like get your money out of your dress and stop trying to be like everyone else on Instagram. Make it personal. It’s just a waste and your not J.Lo. Overconsumption sucks.
I have yet to reach prom age and it’s such a dumb idea. I’ve asked so many older family members why prom is such a big thing since it’s just another dance, and every single one of them has gotten mad at me and called me rude, but hasn’t given me an actual answer. I think the only one that makes sense is when I asked my older cousin and he told me it was indeed, just a dance.
It's absolutely just a dance. Your relatives were probably mad because they enjoyed their prom and hold it as a cherished memory. However, I will dispense the same wisdom my mother once gave to me: people who idolize anything that happened in high school don't tend to have fulfilling lives. Some people really enjoy prom. I didn't attend mine despite getting asked out (he was a freshman, I was a senior and a lesbian with a girlfriend) and don't regret it a bit. If you don't think it'll be fun, it probably won't be. It's definitely not for everyone
14:46 you are so right I’m only autistic and been in special Ed most of my life. I’m now in a normal class and I still can’t trust people cause I don’t know who actually wants to be friends with me and who just pities me and wants to feel good about themselves (I didn’t have prom yet. Not sure if I’ll have since I don’t live in America but yeah)
Hey Tugg, the word you're looking for in regards to the prom royalty is "inspiration porn" and yes, as a disabled person, I can confirm most of us find it dehumanising and condescending.
I live in Estonia and some schools like the idea of prom, graduates usually rent a restaurant or smth and spend the evening there after the school assembly. It is KINDA like prom, but a lot more chill, without kings and queens, without stupid pairings. My class thought dancing was too boring (me included) so we organised the last school trip to a neighbouring country for a few days. It wasn't much, but honestly, it was the most fun and wholesome trip I had. Great ending!
As a foreigner, I was convinced that the extreme importance placed on the prom night was largely a movie invention. Finding out that you guys do this for real was almost unbelievable.
Never went to it, partially cause I didn’t graduate. Never functioned in school and dropped out to start working.
Never went to prom or homecoming myself, always thought that they were both stupid. Glad it dosent happen anywhere else lmao

I'm super introverted and avoid social interactions, yet I ended up going anyway since there was so much hype.

I bought a prom dress, decided it looked too much like a wedding dress, and then bought a different dress. Years later I wore the original dress for my actual wedding.
I WISH I could fit in my high school clothes. I've gained 85-90 ish pounds since graduating 4 years ago lol.
That's amazing!
Good for you 👍

As a fellow disabled person I agree, although I do enjoy having help when I ask for it
There was a kid with down syndrome on the football team a few years older than me that the other teams would always let score a touchdown. Bizarre!
prom and homecoming are so weird. apparently non-americans don't think either are real. honestly i can't blame them
For some unclear reasons now also the schools in my city in Italy do proms lol.
In Slovakia there is basically the same thing as prom called Venček. It's a dance party for kids finishing 9th grade of school( the kids are about 14yo). You find a partner usually from your class and you all have dance lessons to prepare you for it.
bro, true, im from south america and we basically don´t have either of those
I live in Europe and we have a... kinda similar thing? But it's very much a "you graduated! yay!" kinda deal instead of glam and drama
My school also had a "mini-prom" (that was the actual name, yes) for the 12/13 year olds.
I love being part of the 1% that goes to prom just to hang out with friends, doesn’t really dance, goes home not drunk and then goes straight to sleep
ikr!
Same. I brought my purse, had pockets, and am generally responsible, so I wound up the phone guardian for all the girls in my friend group that decided to do things where they might lose said phones.
That straight edge shit is kinda boring ngl. Was way more fun for me & the other delinquents to go around TP-ing houses & being a general tumor
@@duderitoz6953 Dude you're so fucking cringe if you need substance to have fun you need to get some help bro. I done all that and more crazy shit while sober. And I remember it years later can't say the same thing for my drinking and drug using friends.
I went to prom to steal cheesecake cupcakes from Great Wolf Lodge. I have zero regrets.
This is why you do a day date or something beforehand and only go to like an hour of the dance

sameee like what's the point of me paying to hang out with people that I'm not even close with at all
You didn't miss much, to be honest. It's just a glorified dance. And if you didn't care about anyone in high school, it's forgettable
@@xChaosFlower itd be harder to forget if you did go. see all those people having fun with their friends, reminding you you dont have any. not a good time
My grandma was happy I didn't go because everyone I went to school with is an immature dickhead.
In my opinion prom is a big part of the "once you hit 18 you gotta have your shit together and be An Adult, otherwise you're a failure" mentality
how?
@user-kl1ii2ls3f It's part of the "these specific things happen in this specific order, and if you don't do them in this order, or don't do them 'correctly' you have failed and will amount to nothing in life".
It's part of the pressure to find a person and make the night perfect. Adults saying "this will be the best night of your life" and "you'll regret it if you don't go" is a light version of "get your shit together asap". It's like dipping your toes into everything expected of you.
@@Kaeros77 exactly that, thank you!
That actually sounds fucking awesome unlike prom. Who would wnat to dance when you can do so much more than that

As a introvert. The whole prom night me and a good friend just spent the whole time in a corner just chatting. And I had a blast

I saved them not only for sentimental purposes, but my daughters wore them when they were little, playing dress up.
i love this ;-;
This is either the coolest mom or a total Melvin 😭😭
That’s such a beautiful story!! Those are definitely worth keeping forever
a 200 dollar dress in 1952 would be a 2500 dollar dress now adjusted for inflation. kind of weird youre using the price tucker mentions in the video without thinking about the inflation fact. i mean i doubt that kids wore dresses that cost a few hundred dollars back then
@@Bheretusthis was in the 90s, there has been a lot of inflation since then but not that much
Didn't go to prom, but a big group of my friends and I put together a "Not Prom" the same night.
The whole Anti Prom idea sounds so fun. I know Victorious a tv show had an Anti Prom episode
the whole "voting disabled kids for prom queen/king" is so gross to me bc i'm disabled and autistic and apparently, a bunch of popular kids were planning on nominating me for prom queen/king. they did it to humiliate me. it's disgusting

The Sweater Song at senior prom would actually hit pretty hard tbh
Only $35 bro mine was $90 and I had a worse time lol. But it was at a fancy hotel venue so I guess that's why
Not to mention they don’t allow ins n outs
Wait, you PAY to go to prom?! Holy…..
I have noticed people that have been together or are high school sweet hearts have this stoic vibe to them. It's not pretentious it's just like, " i've already done what society expected for me to do" while everyone else is have an existential crisis yet in thier early 20's

It would've sucked. My prom was in 2018, and it was one of the most boring events I've ever went. Like yes. As a person with autism and mental illness, there is a difference in between seeing that life may be harder for someone/ and respecting them and pitying someone. I have learned that in my experience it can be hard to learn the difference, but I like to break it down as sympathy versus empathy.

I wore my great aunts prom dress as my wedding reception dress. Getting it cleaned was hard because it was from the 1950's and delicate. Took 3 dry cleaners to find one to do it, but I looked beautiful. My sister also wore that dress to her prom. Classic styles never die.

I went to prom in my junior year (alone, mind you) and it was honestly just ok. If not incredibly awkward because everyone was on their phones instead of dancing. And our reward for going was, you may or may not be surprised, a martini glass. They gave 17 and 18 year olds martini glasses.
Hell, I would spill that 💩 on the floor 🤮
I went alone but met up with the rest of the theatre kids. There was bottled water and cookies served and that’s it.

Dam same. Proms were not meant for us. Also I am autistic so definitely not made for me. Thats why I never went.
im from russia and we have two big events on the end of the last school year: "last bell" and actual prom. last bell is held by school, we have huge concerts where kids of all ages sing, dance and congratulate graduates, then the last ring rings (by first graders) and the day is over. so its kind of about a circle of life: at the first day of school first graders and last graders ring the first ring, on the last day of school they ring the last bell.
proms are different from school to school. we had an official part at school (so all the teachers and local government could congratulate us) took our school diplomas and had a trip to a huge restaurant by rental bus (best part of the night because we could choose our music ourselves). in the restaurant we had a fancy dinner with other school graduates, a party zone (that was literally empty the whole night with only a dj in it) and a small yard where someone somehow found a way to bring weed (pretty strange experience to smoke with a random people ive never seen before who went to another school all dressed like they are in some disney fantasy movie). me and best friend actually found a room where all the teachers and parents were drinking, it had karaoke in it so we sang sad songs about war and russian army and danced for drunk boomers and somehow they were absolutely okey with it (few of them actually cried on the song "officers" by oleg gazmanov). and then we were packed again in the rental bus and went to a huge concert in the city park held by the local government. there were actually good artists, but i were too tired to participate in it.
every city in russia each year makes this huge type of concerts for graduates only. the craziest concerts for graduates are in saint-petersburg, they literally turn the whole city in the prom show. cities are fighting for best singers to perform on those concerts, so if you live in big city you will def see a concert of the top-artists from russian spotify.
and we dont have such a thing as prom date. we just go to prom

I also used to think about my dream wedding and future life and partner but it seems like that shit isn't going to happen either. 🤷♀️

And thanks to that we can start living a better life for the future

And you’re gonna find the right people and you’re going to meet amazing friends with whom you’re going to have an amazing time no matter what event you go to
So don’t lose hope on your dreams, but do build them or achieve them on your means!

Also, i spent my after prom in the basement of another guy I kinda knew, and several other dudes. We were all too exhausted/lame to drink (even with abudant access to booze), so we just played games and joked around all night. Got donuts in the morning, it was great.
Big Tugg never fails to evade my taxes
Wedding dresses are also absurd for just one day lmao 🤣😂
He already made a video on that
It drives me nuts a few celebrities had more than one dress and now everyday people are putting themselves into debt copying it.
THANK YOU! Me and all my friends who are also disabled hate it! And you can't bring it up without people getting mad
It is I would go with friends and boogie (thats what I did) that's how good memories are made. Or don't go and do something else with your homies
14:46 you are so right I’m only autistic and been in special Ed most of my life. I’m now in a normal class and I still can’t trust people cause I don’t know who actually wants to be friends with me and who just pities me and wants to feel good about themselves
(I didn’t have prom yet. Not sure if I’ll have since I don’t live in America but yeah)
Hey Tugg, the word you're looking for in regards to the prom royalty is "inspiration porn" and yes, as a disabled person, I can confirm most of us find it dehumanising and condescending.
"Has no relation" was such a good joke😌😂😂😂 my goodness
Prom is always prevalent in high school movies but i have *never* seen it happen irl
4:21 what the absolute horror show nightmare fuel is that?!
Tf I just realized that
Eldritch rizz
Nah it's more like: "What in the Micheal Myers?"
