All boxing fans remember Gary, a true warrior RIP champ.
My dad who was a junior boxer was a witness and was there when it happened ,seeing this clip has blown me away ,dad died last year .I hope they are sparring together in heaven RIP
So sorry for your loss 🙏
I met Gary very briefly when he was in a nightclub in Sandown on the Isle of Wight 30 years ago, he was happy to talk to anyone happily signed an autograph for me and wouldn't take a drink when offered. He seemed such a great bloke without any hint of being better than anyone else. Such a shame 👍
You are a fine storyteller
Same as that in kfc morden.lovley fella
@@janicemakowecki4859 as in you think it's a lie?
@@janicemakowecki4859what do you mean ? Gary was actually a great guy and would sign autographs , he was down to earth
@@martindunstan8043 I know exactly when you was talking about. As Gary was a personal friend of mine & I was with him that night. It was at Colonel Boggies in Sandown.
Brilliant, brilliant video mate, thank you so much.
I loved Gary but he was so was so underrated and under appreciated. He had everything a fighter needed to be a success in boxing and still managed to remain warm, likeable and humble.
I met him after he had fought at White Hart Lane Tottenham. There was absolutely nothing to say about him other than he was warm, humble, likeable, patient with the fans and a genuinely nice guy.
Your video brought a tear to my eye and you have done him a great justice by it. The world lost a very high quality human being when he died and is a worse place for it.
RIP Gary, much loved but NEVER EVER FORGOTTEN.
On many occasions,I used to see Gary, running down Wandsworth road,as far as I can remember,he was always nice to those who shouted encouragement to him,may he rest in peace🙏
He use to have a jewellery shop down Wandsworth Road it was targeted and robbed on a few occasions and that put pay to that. He was a lovely guy sad thing is he was the type that would probably bunged the thieving gits a few quid.
Hey Paul, that’s a lovely tribute to Gary and kind words. As a teen in The Late 80s I met Gary as he came into my work place in Central London for goods. He was genuinely warm and friendly. We all were pleased to meet him and he chatted away for a while and shook hands. A brief encounter, but very memorable. RIP Gary. ✝️
We stayed for a while in London in 90's my older brother loved boxing & trained at a gym in S London & Gary came to talk to the boys. My brother didn't speak great English but Gary took time and asked about where we came from. We were back in Croatia when hear Gary had died, I didn't know who he was, but Ivan told me he remembered Gary as a very kind & made a big impression. Everyone liked him it seems. RIP Gary 🙏
That was a great tribute to a wonderful man RIP Gary
I was wondering the same thing
I travelled to Jamaica for the first time with my family aged 13 back in 1990. We stayed in the small village where our Mother was born. One of her cousins was talking about her brother who had moved to the UK to pursue boxing. I didn’t recognise the name so I asked if she had a photo of him. She then produced an old photo of him in his boxing gear and I instantly recognised him. It was Gary Mason! She had lost contact with him and wanted to know how is was progressing. I wasn’t a massive boxing fan at the time, but I knew he must be doing ok because I recognised him straight away. I’m not sure exactly how we’re related, but we definitely are. His family were in Clarendon, Jamaica. RIP 🙏🏾 🕊
I've lived very close to this accident black spot for 26 yrs and still experience trepidation driving past it. I cannot imagine how confusing it is for a driver who is new to the area. The council seem to have no problems erecting meaningless road signs. The least they could do is erect one with a warning here ' EXTREME CAUTION. ACCIDENT BLACK SPOT AT THIS LOCATION. RIP Gary Mason.
Well said. A bollard at least - madness.
One august morning I chatted to my step son on the phone , 4 hours later he was killed in a road accident.
The aftermath and greif changes your perception of life for ever.
I know the pain that Gary’s family and loved ones will still be enduring.
RIP
So sorry for your loss 🙏
Get right with God ✝️
Sorry for your loss I can’t believe it I know what it’s like to lose lose a loved ones. Also cannot believe that the man in a van wasn’t charged and not changed or try to make the road better 13 years on shocking
Sorry to hear this,
Lost my friend when we were both 18 and my mum and dad recently
We all lose friends, brothers , sisters , mum's and dad's,
I appreciate every day ,
Absolute best wishes to you.
@mikeolly67 My condolences to you ,your wife, and the rest of your family on the loss of your love one .
💔💔
" I could not stay another day" what powerful words, made my eyes water.
You're the best Paul, he was only a few months younger than me..rip Gary, what a sad way to end your life, something which could've been avoided... xxx
I'm from Chatham and met him in the inshops in 1990 he gave me a signed photo.
I moved to Croydon and saw him again on the tram and spoke to him.
this was about a year before he was killed.
thanks for this upload.. I actually only live 5 min walk from away from that cemetery I didn't know he was there.
glad to see he is still remembered. Rip champ 👊🏾
Gary was such a lovely guy what a tragic end to a life by someone who was careless and not paying attention RIP 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
An absolute disgrace that such a dangerous junction has been left to take another life.
Gary was amazing in the ring but didn't deserve to die like that.
It insults his memory and family for the local highways authority to just sit on their arse and wait for someone else to die before they do anything.
RIP Gary 😢
Looks llike it would be safer as a mini roundabout.
Great tribute to an amazing boxer, what a wonderful headstone. Tomorrow is never guaranteed, live your best everyday, be kind and loving
I remember the time this happened, it was a shocking way for him to die so young, I hate cycling on main roads because of the danger. RIP ✝️to Gary, thanks for the video
Remember being gutted when Gary lost to Lennox Lewis and I can safely say that today's heavyweight devision globally, wouldn't have had an answer to gary Mason. Gary would have been unified heavyweight champion of the world for the last 10yrs. Thank you Mr Mason for great proud boxing memories, you are still a hero of ours.
Thank you, Paul for sharing. I'm not a huge fan of Boxing, but I remember hearing of Gary. I had no idea he had died and in such a tragic way. That is such a shame. May he RIP.
Didn’t know him or meet him personally but came across to me as a genuine bloke RIP Gary
Such a wonderful and moving tribute Paul. Many thanks. Gary was one of my favourite boxers and a true gentleman. You did Gary proud.
What a terrible tragedy.
Poor Gary going out like that is truly awful.
R.i.p big man.👊
I don't follow boxing much nowadays, but back in the 80's-mid-90's when I was growing up, I loved boxing, watching all the big fights, and I remember what big deal Gary Mason was in the sport back then. I loved watching him, he was such an exciting boxer to watch, and he always came across as a really sweet, and genuinely lovely man. What happened to him is such a tragedy, and a stark reminder indeed, that none of us know how much longer we've got on this Earth. Unbelievable that the council still haven't done anything about that dangerous road.... Thanks for visiting him Paul, and doing justice in tributing the great man. Such a beautiful headstone for him, which is no more than Gary deserved. ❤🪦Your videos never fail to be captivating viewing Paul. ⭐
Well said mate you worded that so well 😊
Really Good Paul such a sad end to a nice Mans life .
I’m glad Gary’s Legacy isn’t lost forever ❤
I met Gary at an amateur boxing event in Newquay, a true gentleman with the biggest hands I've ever seen. RIP Gary
Yo well done on this one mate, you deserve a big pat on the back. Sometimes it feels like people forget far too easily.
I met Gary once in Elephant and Castle at the job centre long after his career was over I was only a kid but he had such a aura in very humble surroundings. I later found out a few bits about his boxing and commentary career.
Good man and definitely deserves the recognition.
Thanks for doing this tribute. Gary deserves to be remembered, as a nice man and a very good heavyweight. 👍🇬🇧
I had great fortune of meeting Gary when I was in ford prison in early 90s he was visiting one of his mates and I had opportunity to go on same table to talk to him what a great man he was , really made my day and cheered me up know end, will never forget him
That's lovely xx
I remember Gary Mason on Another Audience with Freddie Starr, and how he got Gary to partake in Morris Dancing.
Legend....... makes me smile how down to earth he was.
Another great video remembering Gary Mason... A True champ!...thanks Paul once again...a wonderful tribute 💕 🥊
What a great boxer. Very underrated. He should be admired greatly, with that record. He was a boxer of the people. Taken to young. How sad.
I had no idea he passed away so tragically so sad RIP Gary 🙏🌹Thanks Paul for this lovely tribute.Every day is precious
I remember Gary, he was a decent boxer on a British level. So sad the way his life ended. This is a nice tribute for Gary.
Thank you for doing this on Paul. I knew Gary personally & it was one i wasn't going to cover, so i really appreciate your fantastic episode on him.
The man had a heart of gold. He even got the Arsenal ex pro's and celebrities team to come down to the Isle of Wight. He brought, Terry Marsh, Glen Murphy, down with him for the weekend.
So thank you muchly for your top job.
Merry Christmas to you too. 🎄
Cheers Kev, much appreciated mate. Keep hearing all these great things about this wonderful man.
You to all the best for Xmas 🎄 mate
I had no idea that Gary had been killed. How very sad, a fine boxer and athlete and he always came across as a likeable individual. RIP Champ.
R.I.P Gary, gone but not forgotten. 🙏🇺🇸🗽🏴🙏
What a lovely, kind and thoughtful video, much love to Gary, I loved watching him fight, loved the heavy weights of that era, never knew about how he passed, but great memories of him ❤
Wonderfull Tribute To Gary and your words are so accurate indeed. RIP Gary Mason a Gentleman to the End. Love and Respect.
Thank you for being so respectful and gracious, Gary was truly a people's champion.💖💖
Big boxing fan, this is special. I remember Gary and watched all or most of his fights, sad ending to such a talent. taken far to young, thanks Paul
Wonderful tribute to a wonderful human being thank you so much for sharing,🙌🙌🙌🙌rip gary mason
Used to love Gary Mason , such a great down to earth guy….he didn’t deserve that 😭 live life every minute as nothings guaranteed 😭 ….. can’t believe they didn’t do safety measures for that dangerous road…. I’ve 5 boxers in my family and one semi pro taught me to box , I’ve baby pink boxing gloves lol …RIP GARY ❤ True Gentleman xxx
If you ever came across Gary in Chatham he always said hello with a friendly smile and seemed to be a very nice guy.
What a terrible tragedy, so very sad that his life ended as it did. A great video, lovely words and respectfully done.
I only ever saw Gary on TV (Boxing, interviews etc) and he did indeed come across as a lovely fella. Supreme boxer
too. He gave a peak Lennox Lewis all the trouble he could handle. I understand that when the fight was stopped due
to injury, Gary was ahead on points on all the scorecards; that`s a great achievement Vs one of the best heavyweights
ever.
Gary was having a good one, remember Lewis constantly jabbing his eye, part of the sport I suppose, but it didn’t endear him
Very moving tribute Paul and Gary was an amazing boxer and human being RIP Gary
met him loads of times, he lived here in chatham. such a lovely man, and that neck of his! wow. thanks for bringing back memories. such a nice humble man. always said hello if you said hello.
My mum was a waitress at The Olympus cafe in Dawes Road (Fulham, London) and used to serve him.
I saw Gary fight on the Bruno/ Witherspoon night at Wembley. I was an immediate fan and followed his fights from that day.
I was at a working event at Olympia some years later after he'd retired from the sport, I was looking at some sports journalists photos at a stand and was so impressed that he had a number of photos on display of Gary during his fights. I remember zooming in on a particular photo of Gary landing a big right hand. The photo showed the immediate explosion of the punch. At that point in time, I remember a large shadow over my shoulder and someone looking at the same photo. I simply said without turning round and still fixated on the punch, Wow ! I really wouldn't want to be on the end of that !!
As I turned to acknowledge a fellow enthusiast, Gary Mason stood beaming at me. What a moment for me.
We stood chatting for 10 minutes about boxing and his fights. He was the most humble of men. A man's man.
It was my pleasure to of met, in my opinion, a World Champion not to of gone on and fulfilled that dream because of the eye injury.
That’s awesome thanks for sharing 🙏
So welcome@@UnusualThings1
I followed Gary,s career he come across as a great bloke and also he was a good boxer .
Usually when there is a accident black spot that causes a fatality changes are made and it's ludicrous nothing has been done to improve this junction especially when a life has been taken .
R.I.P Gary Mason .
Great tribute to Gary Paul. I was never fortunate enough to meet him but I have only heard good things about him from those that did. If I am correct I think he was cycling to a local hospital at which he was a volunteer worker. Sadly I have a young sister , parents grand parents buried there and even given it is a bleak time of year Croydon Council should be ashamed the state that it is in. You probably know but in case you don't there is a garden devoted to the Lanfranc boys school who were killed in a air plane crash which was a school trip to Norway also in the cemetery plus Derek Bentley who after a long campaign by his family was acquitted of the murder of a police offer he was hung for.
What an absolutely fantastic homage paid to such a great champion. Thank you Unusual Things for presenting this. It's sobering to know that life can be over so quickly.
Dear me, how very sad. It’s an absolute disgrace that the council haven’t addressed the junction, but more of a disgrace that his friends and family have never received justice. The van driver should definitely have served time. Thank you for yet another great video.
Good of you to highlight that terrible junction which could be sorted very easily. Lovely video.
I have such fond memories of watching BBC sportsnight on a Wednesday night backi in the mid 80s when they would show Gary’s fights as an up and comer with such fantastic potential..he was an immensely powerful puncher yet so softly spoken and came across as a proper gentleman in his post fight interviews.I thought what a tragic loss when i heard of Gary’s death.😔
I love Gary Mason. He will always be fondly remembered by me. He was also one of the crew when we went clubbing in the late 80’s early 90’s. One night in Hippodrome, he turned and accidentally knocked my grolsche bottle into my mouth. It chipped my front tooth, and I am very easy going, unwilling to make a fuss, but Gary was devastated and wanted to find a way to make it up to me, he did. The irony is he has perhaps not been treated fairly by the law in this instance of a tragic death to a beautiful man, a gentleman, a true humble gentleman. I am unable to tell you how sorry he was in my case, it was an accident. We share many memories and he is the type of individual this planet needs more of.
BLOODY HELL, Where the hell have i been, i had no idea Gary Mason had died (Been Killed) just hadnt heard of him for quite a while, oh man this is Sad..Well done Paul for this lovely Tribute...
Touching video Paul very sad, I had no idea that Gary had passed, a gentle giant from what i remember and wonderful dad, so tragic. Beautiful headstone for him too. It's beyond me why the traffic junction has never been rearranged, 🤗 Xxx
I remember seeing the tributes and flowers left at this junction of Woodcote Road after his accident as I live not far away. It was a terrible tragedy. The problem with the junction is that you have two roads crossing and when you turn from the main road you have to look ahead as well as left and right. Drivers often don’t read the road and stop and look. A cyclist doesn’t really stand a chance there. Cant believe it’s almost 13 years ago and nothing has been done. 😢
Shocking I was just saying that nothing been rectified with that road I will go down sometime in my respect to GARY rest in peace xx
Thanks for another great vid Paul. Lovely headstone Gary has, i cant believe the van driver wasnt charged.Yes my eldest sister was going to work on the 1st Oct 1996, she was hit by a lorry in her car & she tragically passed away aged 27, she would be 55 now. Her lorry driver wasnt charged either.
So sorry to hear this. 🙏
@@UnusualThings1 Thank you Paul. I feel for Gary’s family, i know what they went through.
I know Gary he was a friend of mine, when we first met his very words to me was. God your a big fit strong guy!
Thank you for leaving a comment 🙏
I remember watching Gary Mason on tv and supporting him when he was fighting. he seemed a really lovely man, very classy and respectful. It is really sad. The thing is with freak accidents is that if he would’ve left his home 30 seconds before or 30 seconds afterwards he wouldn’t have met that van. I got hit by a car once and was in a coma and suffered to severe head injury. I always wonder if I would’ve just left my home 10 seconds before or after how much different my life would’ve been. Rest in peace, Gary Mason.
Well done Paul for taking your time to remember this great man. So sad that he is no longer here ..
Thanks Paul
Lovely tribute,I had the pleasure of knowing Gary he was very intelligent, thoughtful for others and great company.
A truly special person
RIP Gary.
Hi Paul, a great video as always. Gary Mason was a great fighter and such a shame his life was taken in such a tragic way
I wasn't even aware he had died, how terribly tragic, thanks for the information.
I never met Gary but my understanding is he instantly warmed to people and chatted as if you were lifelong friends. RIP Gary.
Why wasn't the van driver charged?
Thanks for this. I have a few personal memories of Gary. He was well liked and loved. I miss him being around. well remembered. RIP Gary.
Thank you for this video. I was talking to my mates about this great sportsman. What a shame. Even on tv he was a great personality. Rip.
I remeber coming home from work and seeing the road taped off in wallington that night. When i went home i checked the news i found out what had happend and realized i was at the scene on my way home.
I remember him as a panelist on sky boxing if i remeber correctly growing up.
Unique channel by the way. Thanks for the uploads.
R.i.p. Garry I was heartbroken when I heard this news! I followed your entire career.
Hi Paul, well done for doing Gary Mason this week. Nice headstone and a lovely photograph of him with his Lonsdale Belt.
I used to work in Croydon and I met Gary Mason twice! A very pleasant and honourable man! R.I.P. brother Gary! 🙏
So sad
Another great video has always Paul 👍
I met him when I was working in Clapham. He was friendly approachable and accommodating to a skinny 17 year old. A true gentleman
Graet informative video as always. I met gary at Clapham Junction train station. He was a real gentlemen. He stopped and talked to me and was very friendly. He had already retired and told me he was now focusing his time in the music industry
Great video. Thanks Paul
I can always remember Frank Bruno shouting..."Be First Gary" at some of Gary's fights. The good old days when big fights were free to air on ITV.
It's a great shame that he had to be out at that time riding his bike at 6.15 am. I am so sad that his life has been tradically taken away in such avoidable circumstances. My sincere condolences go out to his family.
Thank you for a wonderful tribute to Gary Mason, I have subscribed.
Top man...
Another great video Paul and I remember Gary well watching some of his fights as a kid growing up and he was a very tough guy with a great chin and a heavy jab and hooks and it was a sad way for him to lose his life, so bless you for another great video and Happy New Year in advance. Blessings 😊🙏
Looking forward to watching this one
Thanks for another great video
So sad what happened to him
RIP Gary Mason
Apologies if I was being too forward or speaking too much when the chat was on 3 nights now I haven’t been able to sleep and to say I’m tired is an understatement
I remember Gary, such a gentle man. Thanks for the video x Angie x
Thx for the very respectful video paul .R.I.P. Gary ❤
Nice tribute and what a lovely well kept cemetery. Definitely had the same experience as you with losing people. People you went to school with. It's so sad 😞
Hi Paul liked the video looking forward to the next video thank you Paul have a lovely evening 🙂👍👌
Paul, Been away for a while and now playing catch to what I have missed. I am not a boxing fan but have heard of Gary. Didn’t know anything about him but now do. Thanks for an interesting and moving presentation! Cheers mate, Bob
My teenage crush. Gary had a jewelry shop in Chatham. We would hang around waiting for him, to turn up. He was always lovely, a true gentleman ❤️
He used to get his Jewellery where i worked in Hatton Garden a very long time ago. So very sad 😢
Very interesting, impessive and sad life story. Thankyou for making this video and I guess partly thanks to Gary Mason you have just gained another subscriber.
British champion with a record of 37-1. It doesn't get much better. He never hit the big time due to his Lewis defeat and eye trouble. He missed out on the big money but opened a jewellers called Punch and Jewellery. The business failed and Gary wound up working as a security guard. I think he was on his way to work when the accident happened. He deserved better from life than an end like this. However, he knew lots of success and many good times. RIP Champ.
Remember his shop in Gillingham
Wonderful video. Such a sad story. RIP Gary. I drive past there all the time and it is a treacherous junction. Thank you for visiting Croydon/Sutton.
Tragic. Always seemed such a nice fella. RIP
Loved this loved GartyMason as well. Top notch content once again well done.

A boxing legend who died to young, there wasn’t much left of his bike, RIP Gary Mason 💐💐💐💐, thanks Paul xxxx
Great video Paul if not for his eye injury Gary would have fought for the heavyweight championship of the world there is no doubt about that.possible as good as frank bruno who had a great career.great channel Paul respect as always.
Lovely, respectable tribute and memory to a gifted boxer. RIP champ.
Thank you Paul for another fantastic video and merry Christmas to you x
You to Kelly thank you 🙏
Thanks mate for sharing this video about another great British treasure. We sure have lost alot of wonderful and talented people over the years. I suppose as we all get older there's more time passes and so many people pass away if like to wish you and everyone a lovely peaceful Christmas and hopefully a good new year. All the best Paul 👍
Thank you and back to you 🙏
