    Nice overview! Slow pitch jigging has been my favorite style of fishing for a couple of years now. It's great that more affordable options are now available so that anyone can try it. The high price of gear kept me from trying it when I first saw UA-cam videos of Benny Ortiz catching absolute studs over the years. He was the first guy I saw SPJ in America. Before that it was just Japanese anglers. Their fishery is so pressured they had to find a new way to get bites. Here where I live on the Gulf the hardest part is getting out to 200 ft plus water depth in the Middle Grounds or similar. But: "Everything hits the Jig!" Cheers!

    • @FloridaFishingCouple
      @FloridaFishingCouple  Рік тому

      So, I have had a similar experience as you. I also watched the early Bennie Ortiz videos but the gear was so high priced I never got into it. Then a few started selling the gear but it was and is still very high priced. I am thankful I found a way to enjoy the sport for a lot less. Wish I knew about SPJ’ing when we lived in Venice in the gulf side. I bet the grouper are all over the jigs over there. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Hey Capt Dan. Thanks for what both of you do. Thanks for the great info. Now my question is about knots. I know you talked about one knot. But overall what is the best universal knots for all types of fishing? Thanks. Can't wait for your live coming up.

    • @FloridaFishingCouple
      @FloridaFishingCouple  Рік тому +1

      Great question. However no one knot works best for all applications. However, when tying or connecting mono to braid I have found the FG knot to be the thinnest and strongest knot. The double uni knot tends to get hung up or caught on the top guide. Just my .02

    Good video Dan, we jig for Walleye in 40-60', just a favorite way to fish. Here the line has to be perfectly vertical, so jig size or using trolling motors will increase strikes 10 to 1.

    • @FloridaFishingCouple
      @FloridaFishingCouple  Рік тому +1

      That sounds like an awesome way to fish for Walleye. We are more effective when we are fishing verticals also but we fish in 200-500 feet of water. Thin-thin braid is the key to getting the jig down deep and fast.

    Hey Dan
    Great info video. I think you and I got interested in this slow pitch craze about the same time. You actually beat me by buying or getting hooked up with goofish rods and that's what led me to buying one. I got the black one with the gomex reel. Just when I got the rig together we ended up moving over to the west coast around crystal river .. I know you and Elizabeth came over for scallops one time so you know it's quite shallow around here so you have to get way off shore to get into deep water which I haven't got to do yet here. So I'm long awaiting to get out and try this. I know it going to be amazing.
    Thanks again and tight lines.
    Great video.

    • @FloridaFishingCouple
      @FloridaFishingCouple  Рік тому +1

      So, we used to live near Sarasota on the west coast so in fully understand how far out you have to venture to get in 150 feet of water. I thing red grouper would slam a jig, even in 50 feet of water.

    The Dynamic Duo back at it again. Always a great time whether you catch or not. Good stuff mon 👍
    That's a nice hoo you guys landed. We carry a small wooden club and hit them hard between the eyes on the head - instant lights out. Good to know those Rapala lures work. I have a few of them but never got the chance to use them as they guys I go with are old school and use tied ballyhoo baits.
    Did you find any alien looking parasites (trematodes) in the stomach? If I saw correctly, when you crimp your line, leave a small part outside the crimp; less likely for your line to slip through the crimp. That's what I've been told and have always done mine that way. But if yours works, don't fix it 😆
    Love the sound of your 300 twins (sounds just like mine) nothing better than that other than the sound of line peeling off the reel 🤙 Just a gentle reminder to get the specs off your props - trying to get a baseline in order to get better stern lift.
    I too have Dexter fillet knives. To keep them sharp, I use the Chef's Choice 120 shaper after every use. Slices through fish like melted butter. You could also try Danco fillet knives. They are out of Stuart, FL. I have their Pro Series. They just came out with their Lunar-I series which is made out of Swedish Sandvik steel which is supposed to be harder and keeps the edge longer. I will be getting a set of those at some point.
    There's another Chef's Choice Trizor 15XV which puts a 15° edge on your knife. I have one of those also but haven't used it yet. The 120 (20°angle) has been working really well for me.
    Thanks for the recipe, I'll have to try it at some point. Like him, I'll take the tofu out. Not my thing and I'm an oriental, actually a disoriental 😂 If I ever meet you guys in person, I'll s'plain it to you.
    I'm apologizing now for the long comment 🤷😎

    That was a fantastic and informative video capt dan. How much of a mono leader are you using ? Do you use the FG knot because you have a longer leader and reel it In easier than a double uni knot? I did notice the goofish rods have smaller eyelets. Also they have that spiral eyes on the rod vs straight. I can’t wait to get the smaller set up

    • @FloridaFishingCouple
      @FloridaFishingCouple  Рік тому

      I use about 25 foot of leader tied to the braid with an FG knot because it is a very slim knot that wound get hung up on the rod guides when retrieved. SPG rods have very small guides and are acid wrapped. The uni knot gets hung up on retrieve.

      They both serve different purposes. The smaller one is much lighter and can fish just as well as the larger one but the larger one has more line capacity. I think the better question is what id the depth of water you are fishing and what is your target species?

    Hey Dan, I see you have the left spiraling with the left handed reel. How is that with the torque when reeling? How well does the work with twist? Wondering if you went right spiraling if it would even out the twist more? About to buy a setup. Thanks.

    • @FloridaFishingCouple
      @FloridaFishingCouple  Рік тому +1

      There are different theories I have read about the left and right spiral rod. Some say the spiral should go to the side of the reel handle and others claim the spiral should go on the opposite side of the handle. I have tried it both ways and see no difference. The idea of the spiral is to keep the line from ever touching the rod when fighting a fish. It seems to work both ways for me.

    • @FloridaFishingCouple
      @FloridaFishingCouple  Рік тому +1

      I treat it like I would a spinning cast setup - the reason is my right hand is dominant, so I hold the rod with my right and “work” the jig, while I reel with my left hand.

      @@FloridaFishingCouple well we have spoken a couple times through email and stuff before I live in Phx, I fish out of San Diego a bunch. But the slow pitch jigging hasnt really taken off there I currently have 2 set ups and I bring them whenever I go fishing. But to date I haven’t really caught ideal species. I just want to fish and see what goes into making the videos honestly I really want to start making videos when I go out myself. But I mean I’m into any kind of fishing. Though I prefer more action, like if a spot doesn’t produce let’s move to either another wreck or do something else. Could be from getting bait to hitting the jumps then move into the reefs and wrecks for some bottom fishing. Maybe end up at your guys fav spot the lazy lobster for a great meal with the days catch…

    Hey Dan, I am in Virginia Beach and just getting into slow pitch., The water is not that deep here but I want to try slow pitching. Sixty foot is about it. Is it possible to jig in depths this shallow effectively? What size jig would you recommend?

    • @FloridaFishingCouple
      @FloridaFishingCouple  Рік тому

      Yes absolutely! You could get the GooFish Pink rod (rated for smaller jigs) and line your reel with 15 or 20 LB braid. The jigs could be 40 to 100 grams depending on current. Not sure what type of fish you have in Virginia but maybe Striped Bass, Blackfish on the bottom, Bluefish?

      @@Glory-Days-Fishing On the acid wrapped model the guides spiral right or left - on yours the guides are probably straight. No problem you can jig with that rod as well. Spiral wrapping is specific to slow pitch jigging.

So really trying to see what other successful people have used. The 2 rods. im really looking at tokayo spj sg3 from Japan 800 grm max rod and a 500gm max game type slow j from shimano. You really need to try some other SPJ rods. Goofish rods get the job done...but DO NOT have as good of action as other more expensive rods. You obviously have no experience with anything else. You mentioned you tried a Shimano rod. Let me guess...you tried a Shimano Grappler SPJ rod. That is also an entry level rod. Also....those Gomexus reels have no drag curve. It's 0 to 100% which can cause you to lose fish.

    • @FloridaFishingCouple
      @FloridaFishingCouple  Рік тому

      Hey, I’m open to suggestions and willing to try different types of rods but I seriously do not see any reason to spend hundreds more on a rod especially if you are just getting into the sport. My experience is limited for sure but I haven’t lost any fish because of rod failure and you can’t beat the price.

    • @bryantculler3468
      @bryantculler3468 Рік тому

      @@FloridaFishingCouple Thanks Dan. I totally agree that you can get the job done with just about anything. I fished with Goofish and a bunch of other cheap rods from Aliexpress when I first started with SPJ five years ago. I have since fished many different rods from different MFGs. Temple Reef, NLO, and Shimano. I now fish rods from Evergreen and Garage Nagi that are made in Japan. The "nicer" rods are lighter and require less energy to pitch the jig. They are very expensive and I would not recommend them to a beginner. I think your current setup is fine for a starter rig...but to say it's as good as anything else is just not true. Keep the SPJ videos coming though!!!!!
