Cleaning up old Silver Coins

  • I've been seeing my facebook friend Dig Doug Bowden posting some pretty darn impressive results when it comes to cleaning up silver coins. No joke some of the ones he did looked like proof coins when he got done. Now I understand this method isn't for everyone, but the results are undeniable. If you have an old stained silver coin that you'd like to make look presentable I can almost guarantee you this method is going to blow your mind.
Disclaimer: Yes I know this ruins the value of a coin to overclean it this way. These are my coins that I dug from the ground and in my book that means the clean up method is left up to my discretion.
Thanks so much for sharing your secret recipe Doug!

What you did to the coins makes them looks a lot better than they did before you cleaned them. After about a year you will see a patina starting to appear on the coin again. I cleaned a 1916 D mercury dime that was in about good condition and sold it for $825.00

Thank you sir. I suspected that would happen, as with any polished silver. It’s such a quick process to clean that coin up I won’t mind doing that at all. And of course the Spanish Reales and such I’ve dug I wouldn’t do this process, but I think the seated dime looked a lot better. I’m grateful to you for your feedback

Thanks buddy. I don’t think I got mine looking quite as good as he did but the general purpose was met. I was happy with how it tuned out overall. Sure appreciate it

That's awesome I used baking soda and water as a paste and just worked it with my thumbs on a one real and it came clean.

I’ve done the same thing! I have been seeing Doug’s method posted online and I just had to try it. Both work great! Thanks so much for taking time to watch and comment!

I dont think there's anything wrong at all with cleaning those coins! If its an extremely rare and valuable coin, maybe not. But for display, absolutely!

Haha it’s funny all the hate I got for cleaning up that Seated dime…even though it was slick and not worth anything. I’m a big proponent of doing what you want with your own relics and not worrying about what those in social media world think. I believe most of us know by now that if we dig a valuable relic then cleaning it or over cleaning it can reduce the re-sale value. But that’s just it- there will be no re-sale value for me. I don’t sell any of the relics I dig. I just like to display them and if I can work a little magic from time to time to make them look better for display then I’m gonna do it. Thanks for checking out the video my friend
