Tudor-Paul Balan-Tribus all movies unless independent (like Blair witch) cost alot cause u have to pay the actors daily, every house/school/store etc they had to pay to film in, pay the camera man and staff, pay thousands alone just for a camera (they probably had 4-6 camera btw), the props and furniture had to be bought for scenes and every house shown, marketing, and u have to pay for music (not sure how much was just stock music tbh). All of these things can easily be millions which is why some companies use product placement so not ALL the money is coming from the producer etc alone. Think about all those costs over the span of months and even years along with having to replace stuff, scrap takes, reshoot stuff etc, and you'll have a idea y. Director really don't make much money, they kinda cross there fingers and hope they make more then they spent (enough to make another movie) and keep what little is left over.
To the people saying - "Shane has disowned this movie and is genuinely embarrassed about it": Shane hasn't been genuine for even one second in his UA-cam "career". He's only disowning this movie, because it would look horrible on him in 2019, and pandering to an audience of impressionable, high-school girls is much more profitable nowadays. The show was a competition called “The Chair” Shane’s rude, controlling behaviour and inability to take criticism got him completely blacklisted so he’s unlikely to get work in film again, at least as a director.

I just learned that shane was on a tv show when this was being made, and it was a competition where him and another director both had the same base script to work with, and then made their own movies based off of it. He was a total asshole the entire time and refused to listen to feedback that it was too offensive, gross and just not funny. They could barely find any actors because no one wanted to be in it. Terrifyingly, this movie won between the two.

At least the F the Prom isn’t painful to *look* at. And at least the Amazing Bulk wasn’t offensive to African Americans, blind people, homeless people, and the mentally disabled at the same time in the first five minutes. This is it. I don't have a timstamp but when the one guy took the urn and said "That's my grandma" and the other guy started freaking out about "Let her out!" or whatever. That could've been funny too if people weren't yelling every 12 seconds already
Actually, he doesnt even need to say anything. She should look more sincere, looking at her family, sad smile, looks at him and uses what we think is a pity smile, rummages in her jeans for what we assume to be money, then she asks, almost desperate (not sarcastically) "trade places with me? Ill give you $50". He looks at the family, back at her, then goes back to shaking a tin or just shakes his head and goes to sleep. Otherwise, its just obvious and unfunny what the 'joke' will be.
This was part of a competition. That Dan guy wrote a pretty down-to-Earth indie movie, and the script was given to two completely different directors and they were able to rewrite the script as they wanted. So Shane took a not great, not horrible script, turned it into this. There's a great scene in the show (this whole process was documented on Starz) where Zachary Quinto refused to put his name on this "film" as a producer's credit.

I just watched a video from another creator who looks at the BTS of the making of this film... absolute shit storm. Shane looks unbearable to work with, holy moly. So many people didn't want their name in the credits and even actors did not want to audition for the film because the script was so disgusting! Every time I hear the "totes retar" soundbite, I legitimately get shivers down my spine, probably because I'm in public and I don't want anyone having this god-awful phrase associated with me.
I found Drew to be the only redeeming thing about this movie (and even saying he redeems it is a bit much). As you said, he's a good actor, and can't be held at fault for following direction. Plus, I think this was his first time even trying to act. From what I remember, Shane was just a fan of his UA-cam channel and personality, and invited him on.
You should check out Can't Hardly Wait. It's me and my sister's favorite movie from the "Teen Movie" genre. (I don't count Mean Girls as fitting into that category. It IS, however, my guilty pleasure movie. I'm a 36-year-old man, and I love it. Always have. Always will.) I feel like few people are familiar with Can't Hardly Wait, but it honestly is very, very good. Best of luck!

@@anthonyrios2311 - It seems like there was a production group with Dawson, Zachary Quinto, and Leigh. They ended up doing a bunch of projects together at the time. My guess is that Leigh had a fine time with Dawson during the production of the movie - she ended up in a few videos on his channel after (whereas I think this was Quinto's breaking point. He requested to be removed from the credits after seeing the movie). Listening to interviews at the time, I can tell that Leigh probably wasn't a fan of the film. The wording around what she thought of the film was very measured and would only deflect by describing what the movie was (a broad comedy in the vein of American Pie) more than what she thought the audience would feel or what she thought of the film. Very much damned by faint praise (something you'll catch a lot in the PR for bad movies before their release).

I just learned that shane was on a tv show when this was being made, and it was a competition where him and another director both had the same base script to work with, and then made their own movies based off of it. He was a total asshole the entire time and refused to listen to feedback that it was too offensive, gross and just not funny. They could barely find any actors because no one wanted to be in it. Terrifyingly, this movie won between the two.

I don't have a timstamp but when the one guy took the urn and said "That's my grandma" and the other guy started freaking out about "Let her out!" or whatever. That could've been funny too if people weren't yelling every 12 seconds already
Actually, he doesnt even need to say anything. She should look more sincere, looking at her family, sad smile, looks at him and uses what we think is a pity smile, rummages in her jeans for what we assume to be money, then she asks, almost desperate (not sarcastically) "trade places with me? Ill give you $50". He looks at the family, back at her, then goes back to shaking a tin or just shakes his head and goes to sleep. Otherwise, its just obvious and unfunny what the 'joke' will be.
This was part of a competition. That Dan guy wrote a pretty down-to-Earth indie movie, and the script was given to two completely different directors and they were able to rewrite the script as they wanted. So Shane took a not great, not horrible script, turned it into this. There's a great scene in the show (this whole process was documented on Starz) where Zachary Quinto refused to put his name on this "film" as a producer's credit.
Honestly it’s wild how Shane single handedly ruined/tarnished so many people’s careers with one movie just because he had to stroke his ego. Poor screenwriter probably wrote a decent film before Shane filled it with gross/bad jokes. I feel bad for every person involved in this garbage fire :/

I found Drew to be the only redeeming thing about this movie (and even saying he redeems it is a bit much). As you said, he's a good actor, and can't be held at fault for following direction. I was on a school camping trip two weeks ago as I write this. I was in a group of four and most of us planned to watch a movie on one of the nights we were away. We downloaded the movies on our phones, and our phones only have so much memory for two or so movies. One of the movies brought was Not Cool, since my buddy claimed he got it when he was big into Shane Dawson. We just happened to ditch the plan of watching a movie the first night of the trip, and I'm starting to imagine what watching Not Cool would have been in the middle of the woods in the freezing fucking cold. What an enhanced experience that would be...

shane actually wrote the movie, but that poor dude who is credited as a writer turned it into a script so it's not his fault shane is the one who is responsible
No that‘s the wrong order: This writer guy Dan had written a script that was then presented to Shane and his team and Shane said he wanted it written as a comedy and added probably all of the gross humor and offensive jokes.

@@anthonyrios2311 - It seems like there was a production group with Dawson, Zachary Quinto, and Leigh. They ended up doing a bunch of projects together at the time. My guess is that Leigh had a fine time with Dawson during the production of the movie - she ended up in a few videos on his channel after (whereas I think this was Quinto's breaking point. He requested to be removed from the credits after seeing the movie).
Listening to interviews at the time, I can tell that Leigh probably wasn't a fan of the film. The wording around what she thought of the film was very measured and would only deflect by describing what the movie was (a broad comedy in the vein of American Pie) more than what she thought the audience would feel or what she thought of the film. Very much damned by faint praise (something you'll catch a lot in the PR for bad movies before their release).
