I was invited to make a game in 21 days for $3,000 against 5 other GameDevs. I Developed the Game in Unity, and this is a Devlog of the progress i made. Horror Games Dont actually have to be scary, theres plenty more that they can be, as emotions are at the foundation of the genre. This is by far the largest Game Development challenge ive ever been in, and im really proud of how i did.

Awww thank you. I dont think there was a clear winner, it really came down to the individual preferences of the judges eg. Liam loves arcade games, Noa loves atmosphere

I love your style of editing so much, its so fun and odd. Also the cutting of your head out of frame to avoid face reveal but still using a camera is really cool, props for that.

One thing I absolutely love about this game is that it makes you feel... small. Like i mean most games have like really bad scaling like with the trees and with say for example cars, like when the player is 2x as tall as the car and when the trees are too skinny and too short making you feel big and powerful. This game makes you feel kind of small and helpless. I love that in horror. It also feels... realistic or maybe that's just cause im short 💀
I think even the tallest person would feel short there, i worked a lot on making you feel that, mainly in the final week. I really wanted you to feel like you are nowhere near the top of the food chain, like youre just part of the ecosystem
@@Wishbone_Games Yes, also I love the FOV in this game it just feels so realistic. A lot of the other horror games get the graphics perfect but stuff like fov, running speed, and a bunch of other non - graphical stuff wrong which ruins the realiistic aspect. Great Game. If i could i would have voted for you to win :)

the idea is amazing, but i think the heart should be a little more mechanical and less accurate with a human heart
but now that you don't have to follow the theme of the challenge, you should actually make the flesh spread in the barn as you feed the heart, so the barn will be a ribcage for whatever you are feeding.. you can take a direction from there :P
I think making it more mechanical would be enough. But the flesh spreading in the barn sounds cool. Also maybe the spread of the machine as well. So it kinda ends up growing into a cyborg like monster

Dude, I mean this 100% when I say this: STOP SELLING YOUR GAME SHORT. Vermin is easily the most promising game out of all of them -- it reminds me a lot of David Szymanski's Iron Lung (atmosphere wise), which is a game that also has very simplistic ""bad"" gameplay but an overall incredible experience. Point is that games are experiences first and foremost.
Btw your game deserved to win for sure. No disrespect to FluffyPotato, but a pixel roguelike shooter is hardly a new and interesting game at this point-- no matter how polished the gameplay.

PROGRESSION -
Make the entire world and atmosphere mutate , it gets grimmer and darker , creatures get more disgusting , more voices in head . The player looses sanity as the world does metamorphosis .
STORY-
The player is actually inside a creatire formed of elements of nature and came to life due to radioactivity . Prolonged radioactivity from [ some source] is causing it to change further .
Player has to stop it from doing metamorphosis by letting it not consume enough radiation .
GAMEPLAY-
The creature ie the forest/area spawns creatures , walking trees , movable stones and other stuff ro stop player from eleimination the [source] .
Amazing atmosphere, you should finish the game 🎉

Hey, I was wondering how did you achieve such pixelated graphics? Is the game just upscaled or you used some other trick?
P.S The game looks amazing by the way, hopefully you finish it!
So basically what I have set up is:
I made a render texture to which I render my camera. Then in the inspector or through script, I can change the resolution of this texture to whatever I want it to be. Then I have the texture on a UI canvas. This comes with a few downsides which I have only found some hacky workarounds for until now, such as the scaling of the canvas for different displays could result in a stretched view of the game.
You should finish this game man!

Amazing Game in my opinion and looking at the other comments it seams to be pretty popular Its the fist one I've seen that has in in it irl and I love the extra personality is ads its truly amazing and id love to see the idea expanded on. And I have a few suggestions if you what them.
1. you could add more of a game advancement system (like more weapons/items as you go along to ad more verity to the gameplay)
2. you might be able to add more biome into the game to add even more to the already amazing atmospheric tone
3. you could also add a plot twist to keep the interest going (like maybe getting out of the fallout zone just to find more in the rest of the world)
4. you should expand on the enemies there is already a fare share but maybe a encounter where you fight that giant hand in an even more giant battle or maybe the characters brother(I think) cold be reanimated by the glowing giant fungi and you have to fight him so he doesn't kill you
overall the game has a ton of promise and the game looks like (if it was a little more fleshed out) it could have come from a big game studio. also if it was a bit longer I would pay a solid 20 to 40 bucks fore it depending on how fleshed out it was.
On 3. perhaps escaping the nightmare and running away from the heart. As it chases you at the end of the game.

*WARNING! READING AHEAD*
No offense but *horror does need fear* for the emotion thing you used atmosphere. Atmosphere does help with creating a creepy environment but it’s rarely the MAIN source of horror & when it is it usually tries to creep you out & being creeped out is just another version of FEAR. & for the disgust thing I think you’re referring to body horror but that still counts as fear because the goal of body horror isn’t just to make you feel disgusted it’s also supposed to remind you of how little control you truly have over your body to make you feel weak & SCARED. If stand-alone disgust counts as horror then pictures of crap in toilets should be regarded as horror masterpieces

You make some really good points and I agree that with the disgust thing It does tie back to fear at the end, in most cases.
but it's not the emotion I associate with it- disgust to me is something that doesn't even have to be visual or audio related. I did my best in the 3 weeks to make the player feel "disgust" at their own actions- I don't think I did a particularly good job, but my point with it is that making the player question the morality of what they are doing to these animals can give them a sense of disgust, not at any body horror, or poop. This to me is NOT at all scary, but I does fill me with disgust, and if I executed the idea with more time I think I could have proved that in a better way.
I agree that creepy is closely tied to fear, where fear refers to the obvious presence of danger, while creepy refers to the apparent presence of danger, though you're just not quite sure about it.
I hopes this help explain my thought process, not saying you're wrong or anything I'm just clearing it up because it seems I didn't do an amazing job in the video.

As for the environment, I tried to make it feel.. sad. I want you to see a screenshot of the game and just feel the despair coming through the screen- again, not sure if that really worked, im still learning and ill improve over time.
Yes I did use it to put the player on edge, which helps build tension and can take many different forms such as a "creepy atmosphere" but I don't feel that I completely leaned over in that direction either- at least not in the week 3/ final version of the atmosphere.

This is absolutely baller. While the gameplay does seem to be a bit bland this may have some of the most potential I’ve ever seen in a horror game, some real inscryption and darkwoods type shit. Keep cooking man, this looks amazing, can’t wait to see what your low poly hands cook up next.
