This game looks incredible, and I really appreciate the amount of research you put into it. love the backstory for the bird, though as a bird nerd I do have a few minor gripes. Since the bird is a shoebill-a species native to the freshwater swamps of East Africa-it wouldn't naturally be found in Russia due to the colder climate. You mentioned the babies likely starved because the mother couldn't reach them, which implies a high nest. However, shoebills usually build floating platforms on the water for their nests. If you'd like to keep the bird in this setting despite the habitat differences, perhaps consider placing a nest on a water platform with deceased chicks, where the mother still tries to feed them. Just an idea-great work overall!
I thought the same thing about the Shoebill since is one of my favorite animals, and since you said it before me I'm just gonna say NEEEEERRRDDDD!!! However a possible explanation could be that it escaped from a zoo or a research center
if this is placed in russia(i just found this vid), then instead of the babies starving to death, they died from hypothermia and the bacteria which leaked through the nest, which slowly ate the chick's flesh away but i aint really sure about bird biology so.....
Can I just say i freaking ADORE that you are taking every opportunity you get to create models for your monsters, environment, and even sound effects?? You see a lot of gamedevs on youtube that completely rely on stock models and sound and it's honestly a bit boring to watch, but this is a completely different story!!
I LOVE that audio ducking, it's really accurate to how it sounds to walk in the forest. And I love the gameplay implications too, where you have to weigh the risk/reward of progressing while basically deaf, vs. stopping and hearing
Using the shoebill stork's very distinctive clacking call the way you did was so clever! It confusing the geiger counter for a fellow shoebill is an excellent way to justify Why it cares about the noise, and I'm kind of in love with the whole creature. Shoebills are one of my favorite birds.
You should have a creature that is attracted to the dying cries of creatures that hapoen to suffer after shooting them. Make suffering a chance based thing so the player doesnt just shoot everything they see, full well knowing it might attract something worse. Not only does the player feel bad as they have to listen to it cry, but you can also include another feature, forcing the player to use an extra round from theyre gun to put it out of its misery... or in other words... stop it from attracting....... "The Starved". Idk, the starved is a little name I came up with for whatever this creature would be.
I like the idea of horror monsters being more animals, because to me it makes them scarier knowing you can kill the thing, but also how unpredictable and volatile it may become if it feels theeatened.
This really has potential, like the way your designing these animals, they dont feel like just an obstacle, but living things that are just trying to make it through in their cursed environment.
the concept of making the creatures have a chance of agonizing if you shoot them is some devious shit. well done. this is the first vid i see of this, maybe the anims need a little retouching, but the presentation is awesome, really good lighting and compositing, n the effort to make the environment true to life is appreciated
One thing you could add are skeletons (that could be encountered in stages before they disapear due to natural causes) of creatures the water desolved. Or fresh corpses that would introduce an a scavanger, either that wolf from before or something comppetely new from before -Like an Alligator (that somehow doesn't die from the corrosive water, which doesn't make sense, but could be used in another way I can't think of) or a Black Bear (now slowed down by all of that missing muscle tissue, and as a potential new mechanic, he can only see, his sense of smell being entirely gone by lord knows what the swamp did to the poor animal).
These creatures are amazing.. its nice to see some fresh takes on horrifying. The shoebill perfectly shows the horror of suffering through infection we could relate to as biological beings. On a primordial level.. love it ❤
Great job Wishbone. Great example of taking a very rough vague concept and really fleshing it out. Those creature designs in a dying world is everything I would want in a horror game. Duuude, i rarely comment on anything but seeing the development and your tuought process on stuff like the sound design and bird lore is crazy. Rare to see a dev walk you through the processses that make a game really good
I have been making an FPS game for a while now. One thing that is jarring about FPS games is when you setup the camera in the area you would expect the head to be. Then wonder why your character feels small. I would urge you to go play a game like overwatch and pick a character like solider 76 and see how it looks from their view, you will realise that, every fps you have ever played has actually looked like this. You just never noticed until you attempted to implement it yourself. Be careful with the camera here. You may run into a trap where accurate to scale models begin to feel disproportionate to the character due to the camera now being higher. Incase you was wondering why this is. This is a byproduct of FOV and the way a camera "sees" things compared to the way we view things IRL. Adding a body to your character will show you how your height is actually accurate when looking down.
Yeah, I always struggle playing first-person games where there are recognizable things for scale. I’m always like, “Why are my eyes at shoulder-height for this dude?” I can get over it after playing, but I still have that niggling feeling the whole time: “I’m playing as the no-headed man.”
I could be wrong, but if your aiming for historical accuracy my understanding is that those brutalist soviet housing blocks only existed after WWII as a way of quickly providing everyone with good quality housing after the war so they probably wouldn't be in 1930s Russia, also I'm under the impression that back then when they were more maintained they were also painted. As I said I could be wrong about that and it's not like anyone would notice anyway so it doesn't really matter, but that's just my impression. Do whatever you want.
@@Wishbone_Games@AlysIThink101 russian here, there actually is a type of brutalist housing block build from 1928-1950, you can google it - its called "stalinki". the problem is the lore location: if its a village - there will be maybe 0-3 stalinki in the whole village, and the rest would be like 1-story cabins

Edit: Just thought of an interesting mechanic. So walking in the forest is super loud when you have shoes on. But what if the player had the ability to remove their shoes for extra stealth, at the cost of taking damage from time to time when stepping on unseen sharp objects.
The game is called vermin so maybe there could be parasitic type rat species that will follow the player if they've been in contaminated water. After around 30 seconds following they'll group together then pouncing.
Love the foley! Small detail, but I'd put a shallow highpass filter around 250Hz on some of the footstep and fabric sound effects. The sounds will make more sense in context, since the low frequencies wouldn't travel that far to your ears. Also gives the spectrum more room for deep rumbling ambience or creature sounds. Keep up the great work!! Subbed
I genuinely love the animal designs for this. The anglerfish might be my fav, tho (Im biased). I love the idea of this game, and i think you are actually awesome at drawing the concept art and modeling. Nice job.
13:50 give painting them a shot, it might seem like it would be really hard but after learning about layering some textures onto what you draw and lots of filters it becomes a lot easier, it's also infinitely useful because you can make exactly what you need for any game and it gives it a lot more depth when you can make exactly what you need, i would suggest giving it a try, another thing to keep in mind is that under a pixel shader like that it's much easier to make what you need and something that might look like shit normally might work perfectly fine for it

1:58 ERM AKSHUALLY BATS ARENT BLIND ☝️🤓
Erm akshually bats can only see well in low light and if their eyes aren’t dissolved by flesh eating bacteria ☝️🤓
ERM akshually only the big bats have good vision the small are blind but I need to say in this video the bat is big
@@mop-ru4dpyou can’t “Erm Akahually” someone, but then get your information wrong. There is no blind species of bat
@@HexilusGh0st bats have poor vision in bright light but better at night. You say something is blind as a bat because how bats can seem eratic and BLIND if you disturb their nest in the day.
