Seeing Americans excitedly embrace cricket is a joy for me. There are so many nuances to Cricket that make the discovery process interesting well beyond the big hits and wickets (outs). As a bowler I love watching how pitch wear and tear affects the bounce, how ball wear and tear affect the swing, how a bowlers preceding deliveries set a batter into a false sense of security about playing certain shots, how a bowler sets the field and varies the deliveries to dominate a batsman's weaknesses. So many layers to cricket. Glad to see you enjoying it!!
You make a good point about the injuries - the extreme fast bowlers tend to have back injuries and shorter careers; Anderson is known for being a bit slower as a swing bowler but is still going at age 40 (which is impressive)
Anderson himself had a back stress fracture in 2006. Anyone faster than spinner's pace can in theory get one if they bowl enough balls. I know of at least one female bowler who got a back stress fracture.
Not just impressive that he’s still taking test wickets at 40 but with 675 test wickets he’s the most successful pace bowler in test history and the 3rd most successful bowler of all time (the 2 above him were spinners) he never seems to get the credit he deserves. Go Jimmy, Jimmy!

The most obvious eye-catching differences are:
In Test, both the teams wear WHITE uniform, whereas, in One Day International and T20, teams wear colourful uniform.
In Test, the balls used are dark red, marron or pink (played at night), whereas, in One Day International and T20, they use white ball.
Basic technical differences are:
In Test, the match lasts up to 5 days, with a limit of 540 balls per day.
In One Day International, the match lasts for about 8 hours and both the teams play 300 balls each.
In T20, the match lasts for about 3 hours and both the teams play 120 balls each.
In Test, both sides have two innings instead of one. They are of unlimited duration, and there is no limit to how many overs a bowler can bowl.
And more importantly the amount of overs/bowling to the batsman. 5 in an over. Test you take your time to make a run, one day matches the batsman has to put runs on the board .
They might enjoy the short versions of the game. Not sure about the states being so keen on the longer version of the game, whereas the traditionalists are. 😊
Recommend both Dennis Lillie and Jeff Thomson. Demon pair of fast bowlers from the 1970's. Thommo described his favourite delivery as " a throat ball". No helmets then, proper scary
Jeff Thomson is almost certainly the fastest bowler of all time - he was timed at just under 100mph but definitely bowled faster than that. Ask the England batters who faced him in the 1970s.

He played against nothing teams the majority of his career. Shane Warne and the rest played against the best of the best at all times because their team was the best. I could have racked up 100 wickets against Zimbabwe, Canada and Ireland while only being a Australian state level all rounder.

Love your reaction, Cricket is a very skilful sport, as you saw. James Anderson has been playing test cricket ( the 5 day format), for over 20 years, he is now 40 & still good as ever, he’s fast approaching 700 test wickets, for a pace bowler, that’s phenomenal.
I think you already know but in case you didn't, the bowlers are not allowed to break or bend their elbows during the release point, while delivering the ball to the batsman. That's the reason why only handful of bowlers can "pitch" at speeds over 160 km/h (or 100+ miles an hour) unlike Baseball pitchers.

Great reactions, we as Australians love watching Baseball Pitching as well. If you want to just watch some individual bowlers. Please watch some of the late great Shane Warne perhaps the greatest Leg Spin Bowlers of all time. Especially his first dismissal.
The balls that are slower and seem to dip and turn are what we call Spin Bowling this is where the bowler twists the ball using the seam as he releases it. It will drift in the air before dipping and when the ball hits the ground it will spin in the direction the bowler spins it, thats why you will see the ball often violently dart off in a weird direction.
The other bowlers you see are Pace Bowlers. Fast or Medium Fast with balls that reach over 100km/h, some balls dart off a little as you see the ball hit the seam on the pitch. Other bowlers use what we call "Swing"" you guys will call this a "Curve Ball" in Baseball. But this technique is used later in an innings when the ball has developed shine on one side and is rough on the other...this will cause the ball to "swing" left or right during flight we call this "in-swing" or "out-swing" these balls are quite deadly as they violently deviate away from the "Batsmen's" original line, making him miss altogether or edge the ball to the keeper catching him out.
Glen McGrath was perhaps one of the best bowlers in Australia's history, so take a look at him. Some would argue but I'd never seen a more perfect bowler. He could bowl over after over of perfect deliveries, perfect line, and perfect length...like a bowling machine. Boring right? Well imagine being a batsman that can never "Free" your arms enough to take a good hit at the ball...over after over. And if you get bored or frustrated and take that wild swing, he'll bowl you over or have you caught out. That's the kind of perfect line and length you would see from Australia's Glen McGrath. So there you have just some of the different bowling types you may find in Cricket.

On a side note - notice the slope of the Lords ground. It goes across the field from left to right (or right to left depending which end the bowler is bowling from). One of those peculiar things about Lords. (The Marylebone Cricket Club or MCC). So you will hear the commentator saying "that's gone up the hill" or "that's gone down the hill" depending on which direction it bounced. Same for both teams of course but it could mess with your mind if you are playing there for the first time at "the home of cricket"..
In Test Cricket, the game is played in 2 innings over 5 days. It's like Team A > B > A > B. Teams don't go back after some 20 or 50 overs but have to be 'out' for the next team to start batting. So many Test matches end in a draw. But they are the purest form of Cricket and shows to true skill of a bowler and batsman.
The wickets from 2:04 to 2:45 are there in EA Cricket 07 game as scenerios that we can recreate. Basically the players are given the task of rebuilding the innings for England after those quick wickets. Cricket 07 was the last cricket game made by Electronic Arts.
My father taught me the way to spin the ball as a slow bowler - as a very young man I fell in love with the game, and still do enjoy these athletes performing to this day.
It is not just about pace .
An average cricket batsman can easily face a 150 Km/h delivery .
Pace, trajectory , line, length , bounce , swing , reverse swing , spin etc. everything could make a batsman fail. It's about the clinicalness and accuracy of the delivery .

Rules of play are pretty much the same for T20, ODI and Test except for a few rules. Test is played for 5 days max. ODI for 50 overs and T20 is 20 overs as in the name. It is worth noting that all three formats requires different skill levels with test skills considered being highest. Any player early on in their career starts by playing test cricket.
NOTE: Spinners spins the bowl by using their fingers and Fast bowler swing the bowl most commonly ,inswing (coming in to the batsman or outswing ( going away from the batsman).

James Anderson is the greatest fast bowler of all time. He is 40 years old and still plays the test cricket. He played his first international game way back in 2002 so he is currently the most senior and experienced among active players. He got 677 test wickets which is the most by any fast bowler. He has played 178 test matches and is 23 matches away from breaking the record of Sachin Tendulkar who in his 24 years career played 200 test matches. So yes you guys must watch him.
P.S in cricket, for a player playing 100 test is a milestone, a huge acheivement.

Mitchell Johnson during the 2013/14 ashes series & Steve smith in the 2019 ashes series. Trust me, 2 of the greatest performances ever.
Steve Smith was the top run scorer in that series by a country mile (over 300 more than the next highest) and he missed a match and a half with concussion… we couldn’t get him out so we knocked him out. Tainted his career somewhat with the ball tampering scandal though.
To get a good batter out is an absorbing process, it's literally a game of onfield chess to get that batter out! The capt plays a big role, you have to vary the bowling and the batter has to defend swing, spin, fast bowling. Duting a test match I love having it on the radio, in the background while you get on with cooking, reading, whatever. I love the chat and the banter that goes along with the commentary and I love the decorum there is with Cricket, you never, ever dispute the umpire's ruling, they've added reviews to the game, that's the only time you can question the ruling and they are limited, so you have to use them wisely. It's a part of British and Commonwealth culture, there's fierce rivalry between England vs Australia and India vs Pakistan tests, a true global sport that makes you think.
The fast bowlers use speed, swing ( by polishing one side of the ball continuously) or seam ( the ball has a raised seam which if you are skilful enough you can land the ball on causing it to deviate ) to beat the batsman’s defences. Usually they will bowl several balls which all swing or seam in the same direction and then bowl one which moves the opposite way. This is usually the one that bowls the batsman
There are lots of differences between test/1-day/t20 cricket. One difference is the length of playing time. Tests last up to 5 days (6 hr playing time/day + lunch break + tea break, matches usually start ~9 am local time), 1-day matches are played over ~7 hrs and can start in the morning or evening, and t20 matches usually last up to 4 hrs (day start or evening start). Also, in a test match, 90 overs are bowled per day and there can be up to 4 innings (2 per team). In a 1-day, there are only 2 innings, 1 per team, up to 50 overs each. A t20 match has only 20 overs per inning (2 innings total). A t20 match is exciting and explosive, test matches are slower and more measured (although now we are seeing more explosive, fearless test matches too - also known as "Bazball cricket" after New Zealand's Baz or Brendon McCullum who is the current coach of England and encourages this new brand of test cricket), 1 day matches are somewhere in between. If u want to watch an exciting, fast-changing competition with lots of hitting, watch a t20 match. But if u want to see intelligent, skilful, graceful cricket that's a true test (hence the term "test" match) of skill and cricketing brains, watch a test match. Cricket in general involves a lot of strategising and planning, but the scale is much higher in test matches. Another difference is clothing: white for test matches, coloured for 1-days and t20s. The ball is also different: red ball in tests - it's super hard and can take your head off if u get hit😂 it starts off shiny but as the game progresses, it loses its shine and therefore hits the bat slower (usually), so batting can become easier from day 1 to day 5
A white ball is used in 1-dayers and t20s. In general, cricket is a wonderful game and that's why it's massively popular. By the way, a woman player from the USA is very well-known in cricketing nations, esp in India. She played in the inaugural women's premier league (t20) in Mumbai in 2023. Her name is Tara Norris. Test cricket really tests the cricketers on their patience. It's a fair game b/w bat and ball unlike the other two shorter formats (sometimes when conditions go with the bowlers, they prove to be much lethal in tests)
As well as the spin bowlers, who tend to bowl more slowly and use revolutions of the ball to make it “break” (change direction) as it hits the ground (pitches), bowlers like Anderson use swing (aerodynamic movement in the air caused by polishing one side of the ball and letting the other side go dull) and/or seam (where the ball changes direction as it pitches by landing on the seam)

Cricket is such a technical sport , they have different specialist bowlers , like Spin bowlers and pace bowlers. they choose which bowler to choose when they face certain batters.

How the pitch will deteriorate over the 5 days, weather forecast for the next day, if in a coastal area, some captains check the tide forecasts, whether or not to send in a night-watchman if required, when/whether to take the new ball, whether to declare his side's innings as over, whether to enforce a follow-on...

With an ability to swing both ways, Boult is a nightmare for any opposition. The New Zealand fast bowler has led the side to a plethora of victories with his inspired bowling spells

Test matches often has about 450 overs (6 balls per over )
T20 consists of only 40 overs which is like a session in test match.
In T20 Batsmen are in charge . In test bowlers are in charge . Many rules are different . The ball used in test is very different . Test is raw and real cricket . It's the ultimate test for a cricketer . And T20 is a commercial version of cricket for audience attraction and engagement .
In Test there's two innings for each team which could last maximum 5 days .
In T20 there's one innings for each team which lasts about 3/3.5 hours in average .

Something to take into account is old and new balls as they bounce and spin different also how dry the pitch is the dryer the pitch the more the ball turns.
See how the seam on the ball spins. When it hits the deck it can kick off. What’ll really get you is weather conditions can actually make bowling more unpredictable

There are three types of cricket played by cricketing nations.
Test match - played over maximum 5 days with maximum 2 innings each side.
One day international match - It is 50 overs each side match with one inning played in a day by each side.
T 20 International match - It is 20 overs each side match with one inning played in a day. (T20I - Twenty 20 International)
The weather also has a big effect on how the ball behaves, strangely enough.
They dont play in the rain though.
The problem with 5 day Test cricket is that the weather , particularly in England ,can ruin a match.

It won't mean much to you at this point but Lord's cricket ground (St John's Wood, London) is regarded by many around the world as the spiritual home of cricket. Touring sides from around the world tend to significantly raise their game when playing there. It was founded by Thomas Lord (hence the name and the apostrophe) in 1814.
Probably the first significant difference you will pick up on about Test match cricket is the traditional white/cream clothing and equipment which is what I wore throughout a lot of years of my playing 'career'. It also uses the traditional red ball which is even older than Lord's.

Hambledon, Hampshire were playing and beating All England XIs in the 1770s, well before Thomas Lord got going.
They even were responsible for the standard width of the bat.
Interestingly, Thomas Lord is buried in West Meon, just down the road from Hambledon.....he knew! 😅

There are fast bowlers who deliver the ball at about 100 mph.
There are medium paced bowlers who can make the ball swing in the air, and / or off the ground.
Then there are the specialist spin bowlers that put loads of different spins on the ball to make it turn off the ground.
There are " yorkers " where the ball is pitched up at the batsmans feet.
Most of the time, the aim is not to hit the wicket, but to make the batsman nick the ball to the slip fielders behind the wicket

Test cricket is played over 5 days and is the most tactical and considered the heart and soul of true cricket.
The greatest test rivalry is called the Ashes and played between England and Australia and is filled with so mush emotion, aggression and brilliant bowling , catching and batting.
The other formats, are more like TV entertainment, but they really fill the areas
Test cricket is what it says, the ultimate test of international sides. Thing about cricket is, the more you know about the game, the more interesting is, Psychology of the game, batting and bowling averages, the state of the pitch and even the weather all have a contribution.. A top batter can read from the bowler`s hand what kind of delivery is coming. At 90mph, youdon`t have time to prepare a reaction. It helps to know the 32 fielding positions the way a captain sets them, so that the bowler can trick the batter into making a mistake. G'day mates. As an opener (cricket pun intended), test cricket is the ultimate for tradition and competition. T20 and the 50/50 one day game are more for entertainment.

Fast bowlers and spin bowlers are essentially trying to fool the batsman. When a fast bowler releases the ball, the batsmen has to try and predict where the ball will reach him. The bowler will try to make the ball swing by getting it to curve left or right, but he will also try to use the pitch to create movement when it bounces as well as try to bowl at different speeds without altering the appearance of his action (like in baseball)
Pitches are not perfectly flat, so the ball can get irregular bounce or it can move slightly off the seam when it bounces, this is called "seaming". A bowler may also try to target particular areas on the pitch, like a crack or rough spot to try and get irregular bounce. If a ball travelling at 145kmh bounces unexpectedly, a batsmen cannot adjust in time.
A spin bowler is trying to deceive the batsmen by making the ball react off the wicket in a different manner than what the batsmen is expecting. It doesn't matter how much you can spin it, if it behaves the same every time the batsmen will easily be able to predict this. So a bowler will try to set up a batsmen by bowling predictable deliveries and then bowling something that appears similar but behaves differently.
Yes fast bowling is notoriously hard on the body and many fast bowlers retire young. Wicket keeping is also hard on the knees and fingers. Batsmen however can often have long careers.

It is the length. Test cricket is 5 days. T20 is 29 overs for each teams innings. ODIs are One day games that are typically 50 overs per side.

James Anderson is the greatest swing bowler in the history of cricket, he's been bowling for more than 20 years and his knees are fine. Bowlers can get bad knees but it's not a given.
OK. There are two kinds of cricket - First Class and Limited Overs. In First Class Cricket each side bat's twice, 2 innings each. There are no limits on the number of overs only a limit on time. Each country has a domestic competition, in England it is the County Championship. That is played over 4 days. Test Cricket is the ultimate form of cricket, the pinnacle of the game. Test matches are International matches, ie Eng v Australia, India v New Zealand etc. These matches are played over 5 days. It is a players performance within this arena which defines truly how good he is.
Limited Overs Cricket also has 2 forms. One Day cricket, usually played with each side having one innings of 50 Overs. This is also a great form of the game and is played domestically and internationally. T20 is an even shorter format designed to be played over a 3-3.5 hour span. As the name implies each side bat's once and is limited to 20 Overs. It really is just a slog fest.
Any players career statistics are broken down over these 4 formats. However, as runs and wickets are harder to get in First Class and especially Test Cricket these are what really matter...

The ball when it went round the batsman was bowled by Shane Warne of Australia, probably the best spin bowler of all time, and became known as the ball of the century.
Baseball the ball can swing.
In cricket it has to bounce, which is variable depending on the pitch, it can hit the seam and move left to right, it can swing through the air left or right, it can reverse swing in and out, you can hit the batsman anywhere on the body ie the head, teeth and neck, fingers, groin, toes.. the ball can spin forward, left and right, you can bowl it at their feet.
Oh and all of these fast bowlers are bowling around and up to 95mph so you have around about 0.4 second to react, come forward, go backward, defend, play a shot or leave!
And people have been killed playing the game too

Just look how the defense is positioned in a test game and in a one-day game and you will get the big difference: in a test match "catches win matches", in a one-day cricket it's not the same.

To defend the wicket, the batsman can step forward or back. Or, remain stationary as the flight of the ball does not allow stepping forward or back. If you can have the bat where the ball bounces then it is difficult to be LBW, leg before Wicket. You step back if you expect a high bounce, and this means that the bowler is able to reduce the bounce and the ball goes under the bottom of the bat. This gives you an idea of the battle between batsmen and bowlers.

Knees, ankles, hips, back, shoulders, elbows. All common injuries for bowlers, when you run in you put 8-10 times your body weight through your lower body when they land and it is tough. Bowlers often have small injuries that they play through. During a test match that plays out over 5 days bowlers can 40-60 overs a match. Incredibly tough. You need to check out the way bowlers set batters up, it's a very nuanced game and you often miss those nuances when you only see the end result which is ultimately the batter being made to look silly.
Part of the bowler's arsenal is pressure. If they can stop the batsman from scoring by bowling good ball after good ball, eventually the batsman will try and break free with an expansive shot. Thats when they're at their most vulnerable. Glenn McGrath of Australia bowled the perfect line and length again and again to keep the batsman pinned down. He was like a metronome. No relief for the batsman at all. No easy runs available anywhere. Eventually the batsman would get himself out with a poorly judged shot to try and break free of the pressure.

The stress on the fast bowler's body is quite extreme. Their knees, shins, ankles and back receive an incredible amount of stress in the weight transference and delivery phases of bowling, ie from back foot to front foot and then the ball release. Most fast bowlers have a shortened career because of this or they get slower as they get older. So their bowling action is paramount for longevity and to help avoid injury. This is why Jimmy Anderson is such an anomaly, he's 40 years old and bowling like he was 10 years younger. One, he still has a passion for the game and two, he has managed to be relatively injury free throughout his career which is almost unheard of. Bowling for so long at that level places an enormous amount of stress on the body. I'm not English, so it comes from a point of great respect of a bowler than the one eyed view of an English fan.
I think the bowler you were referring to with the twisted wrist would have been Muttiah Muralitharan. His action was very controversial, particularly in Australia where he was called many times for throwing. He had some deformity in his joints that allowed him to flex his wrist far more than most and mad it look like a throw. Studies were done and found he wasn't actually throwing at all. A throw is determined by the amount the elbow bends in the release of the ball, it is now 15°, it was only set to 5° for spin bowlers previously back in the 90s but studies showed even bowlers with good actions would flex more. Murali was definitely an anomaly with birth defects allowing his arm this much flex and it has taken a lot of studies and convincing for the cricket world to accept. It was his action that actually changed the laws to 15°. I was one that needed convincing too, but I was also going for a team that wasn't Sri Lanka so there was some bias in my thinking too, a bit of white line fever. He was certainly the best of off spin bowler the world has seen and I don't think a comparison can be made between him and Shane Warne as a leg spin bowler, they were both masters of their professions. Arguments can be made for both as to who was better, but most fall within the realms of which team you liked the most.
I'm really enjoying your enthusiasm for the game of cricket, guys. I love the game but I have grown up with it, for someone to discover the game later in life and be fascinated by the skills is quite endearing, who knows, one day we might see you out on the field actually experiencing the game first hand.

test matches they get tech help now. Bear in mind they seem slower from the end.... many of these are fast - max speeds in the world are almost 100 mph (160 kmh) but these were swing bowlers - usually slower by 20 mph

Test cricket is supposed to be played over 5 days, with each team batting and bowling twice.
The aim of the batting team is to be batting for a long time with the aim of accumulating a big score of runs. Usually around the 400 - 500 mark. This Would take around 1.5 days. The downside to test cricket for the newbie is that there is probably only about 1-3 runs scored per over. The true fan, though, will admire the batsmans cool temperament.
Test cricket also offers the " batting collapse" for instances, when an opening pair of batsman have put on a good total, get bowled out abd the rest of the team fold for not much of a score.
Test cricket is the highest standard of cricket. Top teams in the world always plays 3-4 test series every year. The Ashes is the most famous test series.
Test match cricket is the longest(up to five days) and the "Purest" form of cricket.... it is played between National teams, with the major World teams being England, Australia, New Zealand, West Indies, India, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangla Desh.........other countries include Netherlands, Afghanistan, Ireland. Each side bats twice, and the game is very much a test of tactics, endurance, skill, patience and toughness.. it actually is TEST, hence the name.. Tho oldest, and fiercest rivalry in the world is England VS Australia, and this is so intense that back in the late 1930's England's tactics and style of play was so harsh it caused a diplomatic incident and nearly saw relations between the two countries broken off....... yes, it might be seen as a game for gentlemen, but believe me, these are some VERY tough "gentlemen"......

They say with fast bowlers that the batter has less than half a second to read the ball from the hand. Everything after that is guess work.
A lot of these wickets come about because of an accumulation of bowls.
Short one delivery followed by a slower swinging delivery followed by a fast moving off the bounce delivery. The batsman have no idea what is coming next.

Considering the wickets are 22 yards apart and the ball can be approaching at up to 95 miles an hour, the batsman doesn't have long to react.
