In the comics, Garfield's "dialogue" is always contained in a thought bubble, not a speech bubble. That should tell you something about Jon's ability to assess reality.
The stories are told from Garfield's perspective. He acts like he's talking to Jon, but Jon never responds to anything he says.

My fur brother, Smoot, lived 2 months past his 21st birthday. He could have lived longer but his arthritis had gotten to the point where it was time to day goodbye. I got him when I was 5 years old and I had no idea what it was ok for a cat to eat so Smoot ate everything I did and he LOVED Polish garlic sausage, hot sauce, and tons of stuff that I later learned should have killed him.

It's funny but garfield and other animals doesn't "talk", they just think and they somehow know what each other is thinking, but humans can only guess. The only animals that ACTUALLY speak are the Orson's Farm animals.

He actually can talk, this was proven by a comic strip
He can talk sometimes and Jon can clearly hear and respond to it. In other comic strips, what he says is translated into "Meow" which Jon either understands or not. Most of the time the two don't really "talk" to each other and it's Jon talking to Garfield with him thinking his part or Garfield talking to Jon with him not getting it.

When the animals are talking to each other via thought bubbles, it's implied that they are reading each other's minds, rather than speaking out loud. The thought bubble has meaning, and that meaning isn't, "This is coming from the mouth of an animal", it means, "This text is the inner thoughts of this character."
When Jon replies to something Garfield thought, that's the joke - that Jon replied to a thought inside Garfield's head as if he heard him say it.
Tim Kelly is right - Garfield doesn't speak to Jon.

Nyarth128255 I can assure you that there is a language to comics that Jim Davis understands perfectly well. You can't mess around with that language and expect your readers to work out what you've done. If you start playing fast and loose with the meaning of fundamental elements of a comic strip without explaining what you've done, all you're going to do is confuse the readers. I don't believe anyone would bother doing this, but even if I did, I don't think even Jim Davis himself would think that the Garfield strip is the appropriate venue for such avant garde experimentation.
Trust me, speech bubbles are always speech bubbles and thought bubbles are always thought bubbles, with very few rare exceptions. If a character responds to a thought bubble, the implication is that they somehow heard the thought without actually hearing it. It's usually a joke about being psychic.
I'm sure the reason the animals in Garfield can communicate via thoughts is because we all know that animals don't speak out loud, so Davis used this as a way more convincing method of having his readers believe that maybe animals are talking to each other in real life.
When a thought bubble V's to the character it is talking, when it bubbles from the character to tge bubble it is thinking.

That's the point of this skit. Like a cat would eat lasagna conceivably if you gave it to him; my cat goes apeshit for anything with tomatoes, beef, cheese, etc. for example. Like he always bugs the shit out of me when I'm eating it, I don't.... Feed him lasagna lol, so yea.
So this skit is probably saying that it's a normal cat being fed an extremely unhealthy diet, and that Jon's loneliness has caused him to develop psychosis wherein he hallucinates his cat talking to him and acting like a person - like in the comic.
Like fuck my cat is my best friend and due to my chronic health problems I am stuck home alone 97% of my life, but.... I know he's still just a cat. Like I'm really good at interpreting cat behaviour, so I can tell what he wants or needs or is trying to convey really well, but...... I'm not exactly having _conversations_ with the little guy or anything. I sometimes sorta do, like when he's really bugging me for something I can't give him (because Bear you're a goddamn carnivore stop trying to steal my tomatoes), or like. If I need to say something to someone and I need to practice saying it... I sometimes practice saying it to my cat, he's a good listener lol 😂
But yea I know he doesn't understand the vast majority of what I say to him, and that again; he's just a cat. Also he gets fed cat food and is a healthy weight according to the vet.
Actually Garfield never said anything in the comics he just thought it. so John never hears him, when you realize this John isn't crazy he just talks to him self because he is lonely and the cat just thinks comical remakes

The question isn't whether you SHOULD feed your cat oatmeal. The question is, can you get your cat to actually eat it? Or any of the other things on your list. Likely the cat will sniff the oatmeal, and then look at you strangely as if to say "why is this sloppy goo in my food bowl, I want to eat food, not caulk the bathtub". I doubt that cottage cheese would actually be bad for a cat though. Just like a human who has been weened off milk and then didn't drink it in childhood, a cat that hasn't consumed milk all its life will usually barf up milk and that's likely to be the result with cheese, not hyperobesity, but with the cultures in cheese, maybe they can derive nutrition from it, in which case it would not be too different nutritionally than eating meat. It's surely not as bad for them as this cartoon implies, at least not unless you feed the cat massive quantities of it. And they'd have to eat a lot of cottage cheese for it to add up, that one is a fairly low calorie cheese.
notcyndi She does eat those things. I don't know where she grew up but she probably was fed human food when she was young, because she's crazy about cooked vegetables and such things. Also she's sterilized so she's pretty much always hungry. And when she's hungry she can even steal dry bread from the table, eat oatmeal, potatoes, cookies. I think the only thing she doesn't eat are fresh vegetables and fruit. In general though I feed her specialized cat feed.
