This is definitely one of those songs where people vibe with the music and then...you catch the lyrics...and people are like...oh...OH. Damn. By the way, there's a Bardcore version done by Hildebrand Von Blinken that is also fire.

This song is very much inspired by the bassist's cousin surviving/even being in the library during the Columbine Shooting. When I listened to the song for the first time, I had the thought of this being a blatant reference to a school shooting. Everyone called me crazy, only then to backed up by interviews from the band members confirming it. No matter how "cheerful" the song may sound, it can certainly be a harbinger of darker, more sinister meaning. Don't be naïve and take things at face value, less you become a victim yourself. Don't reject information simply because it makes you uncomfortable, after-all, reality is just that...uncomfortable.

I think as a tool enthusiast you were a little defensive about it. The song artistically expressed an all-too real situation, and you can assign/attach your feelings on the subject as you wish, and that's what you jumped to. I mostly think of the mindset of someone like that, and wonder what could have been done before it came to that, myself. But, it shows what a good piece of art and music it is, I love the dichotomy of the upbeat chorus and the sad, kinda horrifying lyrics.

    • @armedpreacher

Know what’s more horrifying? Over 4,500 children are killed every single year by medical malpractice.. literally doctors. Know how many kids have died in school shootings since 1998? 182… which issue is the more “horrifying” and important issue? Not to mention the 180,000 children that get trafficked every year…

Indie\alternitive rock genre.and this song was to bring awareness to school shooting and the reasons behind or the things that may possibly lead them to that point...the reasons or things that create the person to go down that path in the first place and how we need to prevent these things by providing help for these people before it goes that far.I think you missed the point or message....its more a warning of what can happen if things aren't changed at home & in school for some of these kids. A heavy message put to a lighthearted and catchy tune...catches the ear, then makes you think once you really listen.✌

I saw an interview where the lead singer said that the song was about intrusive thoughts and not letting those thoughts win. I see the other comments and how people say it's about school shootings or the LA shootings over shoes, but he even stated that it isn't. We all get intrusive thoughts and whether or not we act on them. The line "your hair is on fire, must have lost your wit" is an example of how the character had those thoughts but did not follow through. You should look for thar interview. If i can find it again I'll put the details.

Exactly, it’s like saying that a hammer doesn’t drive a nail, a person does. The issue lies in the fact that the tool is readily available to anyone. If driving nails were illegal, hammers would probably be illegal too.

    • @mavzdog

@@henryhardenyet there’s already so many illegal guns in circulation that putting more restrictions, or even outlawing them in general would only take them out the hands of law abiding citizens. The system is fucked, and the only way to stop gun violence is to stop the source of illegal guns. Mainly, the southern border.

“Oh the hammer didn’t drive the nail the person drove the nail.” No shit the gun didn’t do it on its own but the fact that guns are widely available “tools” for anyone to use is the issue. If driving nails were illegal you’d think there’d be less hammers, just like how you’d think since shootings are illegal there’d be less guns. Ever notice how the only country other than Yemen that allows for people to own guns without a permit, and the only country that has more guns than people, is the country with sky high mass shooting rates? Fuck off dude your reasoning is bullshit how about you get your head out the echo chamber and listen to common sense!

Definitely a subject that doesn't match the sound of the music. But, it's crazy that they ended up getting plenty of kids to sing along to something like this. It reminds me of when Naughty By Nature had people singing about OPP, even though that's not quite as bad... just catchy music about subjects that a lot of people find controversial.

Foster the People is basically a one hit band, and nothing else they did came close to this song. I don't think there's much more here for you to React. Maybe instead something from the same period and genre? I propose Fun - We are Young (feat. Janelle Monae).
    > Notice, Robert's planning to do something horrific, not the 6-shooter gun.
Yeah, obviously inanimate objects can't plan to do anything. They're tools. However - Our plans are restricted by the resources we have. If Robert only had an inflatable hammer, he couldn't do any harm to anybody. If he had a knife, he could probably hurt one or two people before somebody stopped him. It's not as easy to hurt somebody with a knife as with a gun, and it's a lot harder on an emotional level to actually stab somebody with a knife, than to pull a trigger.
If somebody wants to responsibly use a gun for recreation, or feels the need to have it for self defence (even though in reality, defending yourself with a gun doesn't happen to often), then they should have a way to obtain a licence for one. I just can't understand why so many people have a problem with the idea of licencing, a safety exam, psych check, background checks etc. I know that legally in the US you have the 2nd Amendment, but I'm taking about what would be the best option, not about what's legal now in a specific country. :)
Cars don't kill people either, but we still require a licence, and you can't say it's that hard for someone who wants to drive a car, to get a driving licence, and drive.

Exactly, it’s like saying “oh the hammer didn’t drive the nail the person did.” Like no shit, the issue is the fact that crazy people have the ability to get the “tool” to do it. If driving nails were illegal then hammers would probably be sparse if not got completely, it should be the same for guns.

Lmao not in gen z's lifetime I doubt. Gun registry and stricter gun laws? Pffft. It's 'Murica baby, ain' t no chance of that. And for the record I have no problem with guns. Guns are fun, guns are useful. Guns should never be in the hands of everyone. The average person is an absolute deadshit. Guns as a right only made sense when the government and the people had the same guns. Any serious uprising would be met with a swift drone strike today. Not comparable, not necessary. Sincerely, every single sensible country on the planet.
