      Per them, themselves
Foster said in a statement to CNN Entertainment, "I wrote 'Pumped Up Kicks' when I began to read about the growing trend in teenage mental illness. I wanted to understand the psychology behind it because it was foreign to me. It was terrifying how mental illness among youth had skyrocketed in the last decade. I was scared to see where the pattern was headed if we didn't start changing the way we were bringing up the next generation." In writing the song, Foster wanted to "get inside the head of an isolated, psychotic kid"and "bring awareness" to the issue of gun violence among youth, which he feels is an epidemic perpetuated by "lack of family, lack of love, and isolation." The song's title refers to shoes that the narrator's peers wear as a status symbol.
The issue of youth violence is a matter close to the group. Foster was bullied in high school, while bassist Cubbie Fink has a cousin who survived the Columbine High School massacre in 1999. Fink said of his cousin's experience, "She was actually in the library when everything went down, so I actually flew out to be with her the day after it happened and experienced the trauma surrounding it and saw how affected she was by it. She is as close as a sister, so obviously, it affected me deeply. So to be able to have a song to create a platform to talk about this stuff has been good for us."

Yeah this is one of those songs where the music totally gives you a different feel than what the words actually say. Its a banger, but its also really dark. A lot of artists use that juxtaposition in their music, but this is the most apparent recent example. I'm a little older, but friends of mine who were in high school when this came out liked it, but they also saw how f**ked up it kinda was.

I took this song as basically them saying you see this kid who you should be paying attention to because of how he acts but is ignored because he's weird and don't fit in with others.
This song isn't glorifying school shootings, it's telling you how they happen.

  • @aaronwhyterijos1562

Yes this is a school shooting . This song was to start a conversation on school shootings. And the kid Robert wants to release his anger on the rich kids who have the pumped up kicks, and we know that Robert is poor because in-the song it says Dinners in the kitchen and its packed in ice meaning he and his father eat microwave Dinners.

Yep you got it 2:28 band member mark foster said: "'Pumped Up Kicks' is about a kid that basically is losing his mind and is plotting revenge. He's an outcast. I feel like the youth in our culture are becoming more and more isolated. It's kind of an epidemic. Instead of writing about victims and some tragedy, I wanted to get into the killer's mind, like Truman Capote did in In Cold Blood. I love to write about characters. That's my style. I really like to get inside the heads of other people and try to walk in their shoes."

The song was mostly inspired by the Columbine High School massacre in 1999 where a family member of a band member was a survivor stuck in the library. I imagine that is testimony to him to inspire the song as a background in addition to the many school shootings that occurred after Columbine.

What I love most about this song is when I’m a good dancing mood I can dance to it without hearing the sad lyrics that are relatable to real life problems but when I’m sad I can be chill and cry my eyes out to this song to get my emotions out when thinking about how bad I feel for people that go through things like this so depending on my mood I will ignore the lyrics or sometimes listen to them

The lyrics to are written from the perspective of a troubled and delusional youth with homicidal thoughts. The lines in the chorus warn potential victims to "outrun my gun" and that they "better run, better run, faster than my bullet." Foster said in a statement to CNN.com, "I wrote 'Pumped Up Kicks' when I began to read about the growing trend in teenage mental illness. I wanted to understand the psychology behind it because it was foreign to me. It was terrifying how mental illness among youth had skyrocketed in the last decade. I was scared to see where the pattern was headed if we didn't start changing the way we were bringing up the next generation." In writing the song, Foster wanted to "get inside the head of an isolated, psychotic kid" and "bring awareness" to the issue of gun violence among youth, which he feels is an epidemic perpetuated by "lack of family, lack of love, and isolation." The song's title refers to shoes that the narrator's peers wear as a status symbol.
Contrasting with the dark lyrics of the song, the music, which was written first, is upbeat. Foster said, "It's a 'fuck you' song to the hipsters in a way-but it's a song the hipsters are going to want to dance to." Jeffery Berg of Frontier Psychiatrist said, "I was so engrossed with the cheery melody of its chorus that it took me a few listens to discover that the lyrics suggest dark, Columbine revenge."

Its about a kid planning to kill rich kids in his school .But yes the " pumped up kicks" is referring to the trainers. Only rich kids could afford them . I love this song and yes it is about a mentally ill kid planning a school shooting . Its meant to e an anti bullying song . Thank god I never had or have to worry someone will shoot up my kids school. We had only had one school shooting .That was in Scotland in the 90s . Just before I was due for my first son to start to school. That was a mentally ill man who was a local scout, cub leader who was angry at parents who had complained about him .( I believe) Walked into a school and killed a whole class of 5 year olds and their teacher. Everything changed then ( even though guns are illegal) security beefed up , school gates locked during daytime ,having to buzz a door bell to get in ..
I just don't understand why there are still so many shootings in American schools. Don't the parents lock the guns up? Bullying is still rife . Mental illness not picked up on .Its sad .How many more kids have to die .?

    Lyrics:
    Robert's got a quick hand
He'll look around the room, he won't tell you his plan
    He's got a rolled cigarette
Hanging out his mouth, he's a cowboy kid
Yeah, he found a six-shooter gun
In his dad's closet with a box of fun things
And I don't even know what
But he's coming for you, yeah, he's coming for you, wait
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, faster than my bullet
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, faster than my bullet
    Daddy works a long day
He'll be coming home late, yeah, he's coming home late
And he's bringing me a surprise
'Cause dinner's in the kitchen and it's packed in ice
I've waited for a long time
Yeah the sleight of my hand is now a quick-pull trigger
    I reason with my cigarette
And say, "Your hair's on fire, you must have lost your wits, " yeah
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, faster than my bullet
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, faster than my bullet
    Run
    Run, run, run, run
    Run
    Run, run, run run
    Run, run
    Run, run, run
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks

Way before the song was released the lead singer admitted he was working on a song and the only lyrics he had written down were pumped up kicks and pumped up kicks represents the only kids in his school who wore pumped up kicks were rich kids

The meaning is about a poor kid, Robert, who is poor and rarely gets to see his dad. And pumped up kicks refer to expensive shoes. Robert finds a gun in his dads closet and has a thought, what if I got revenge on the rich kids. But he dosent do it bc the song is about him thinking about it. Which is normal for humans to think about stuff like that, like if your driving over a bridge and think "what if I drove off this bridge". Your not suicidal until you actually do it. That's where people misunderstood the song. There really isnt anything bad about it

This song reminds me of Semi Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind, in that it was a catchy radio hit about some much darker shit.

The pumped up kicks are those shoes you could fill the sole w air they were super popular in the 90s and early 2000s and he's basically speaking from the mind of a poor kid being bullied and getting fed up with kids flexing on him I think anyway

From Billboard Interview with Mark Foster, "So the song was written from the perspective of Robert, a high schooler with plans to go through with a school shooting. Can you share a little about how you wrote the song and where that idea came from?"
Mark Foster- "Well, I'll stop you in the question and say the school shooting part of it was never spoken about in the song. I think people filled in the blanks that it was about a school shooting, but I never say anything about a school in the song. It's really more about this person's psyche. Obviously the song is speaking about violent things, but it is a misconception that it's about a school shooting. I mean, it's not a big point that you have to hit home, I just want to point that out."

I'm assuming the whole part where he talks about his dad and the lit cigarette is him contemplating on whether or not he should kill his abusive dad. Especially when he says your hair is on fire must have lost your wits. Kind of like he's realizing how crazy it would be to actually kill somebody. But also a reminder that he is literally losing his wits. And he's getting pushed to the point where he won't be able to stop himself.
