Wow! 20 years since Freelancer appeared.
I still remember the station announcer. _"Freelancer 1, dash,1. You are cleared to land."_
Freelancer Alpha-dash-One :)
@@magicwordxyzzy Bugger. You're right. it seemed odd when I was writing it but I couldn't work out why.
Just as well I could remember most of it from all those years ago ;-))...
@@thezanzibarbarian5729 actually, we were both two-thirds correct; it's actually "Freelancer Alpha one-dash-one."
@@magicwordxyzzy What's a missing _"Alpha"_ and a missing _"one"_ between people who thought this was a good game 20 years ago? 8-))...
I just remember the crazy story and the steady tech progress....
Took me right back to my Freelancer childhood
I like how the trade lanes make it obvious from a distance whether you need to enter the top or bottom lane, unlike in Freelancer.
I mean, all you ever had to do was fly through the lane a single time and you'd immediately know what to do. Making it obvious wasn't even necessary because you learn by interacting.
Not only that, the game would auto-correct your ship in case you got it wrong. It's not like the game wasn't designed around it.
@@_Jay_Maker_ yeah, but sometimes I'd be coming in hot and the auto-correct would get me killed
but Freelancer does mark the lanes, the correct direction will always have green flashing lights, the opposite way is marked by red ones, they are only off when the lane gets hacked
@@The93Momo93 I believe it only added in mods like Discovery, I don't remember it being a thing in vanilla 1.0 FL
@@pla2n.tommygunit is in vanilla, 10000% :)
I like you thumbnail for this video.
Well this came out of left field. Gonna be looking into this one. Cheers for the heads up. 👍
Nice, tackled me too out of the blue...
it doesnt need the newest ultra graphics, this looks good to me (improvable around the edges but good).
Yep true, although I believe they will also work on that. What is most important to you?
Retro gaming is back !
It looks like a everspace/galaxy on fire game with graphics of X3 (not a bad thing). I think it has potential
I'll probably buy it, but they've got some big shoes to fill. Not to mention they've also got to overcome my nostalgia.
Underspace is far from finished, but really promising. What's your first impression?
For me it's the sound, but as the game is still in Alpha. there is really a strong foundation already to improve upon
Made me re-install Freelancer!
Excitement!
I see the other Captain behind you ! xD
Cheers ! 😃
Capception
@@CaptainCollins Captain Doppelgänger ! 😆
The graphics look great for what it's trying to be.
Looks really good to me, Is it coming to consoles?
I'm hooked. I loved Freelancer a LOT. Unfortunately it (Freelancer) was never entirely finished as expected and rushed in the end release, when MS took over and Roberts left the Project. After it was delayed a lot, while being in developement for over 4 years before final release. Sounds similar? :D Roberts had a similar approach even back the days! And even then he told MS he would need a lot of money to fullfill his Vision with Freelancer and wished that a big company like MS will give him the needed funds to finish it.
A lot was scrapped that was promised in the end but it was still a great game.
If a game takes it similar, i will for sure try it out.
👍👍👍👍
And several aspects of the UI remind me a lot one of my favourite space games: Astrox imperium.
Yes, there was a Freelancer before Freelancer, Wing Commander Privateer. Afterwards we have Rebel Galaxy 1 and 2 (sad there's no 3). However, thanks for this. Any new entry in the genre is very welcome because I love em :D
I still remember when the game was still Starlancer... After that Freelancer....
It looks interesting, but being somewhat jaded by devs making promises they have no intention of keeping, I'll put this on the "Wait and see" list. So glad I did the same the KSP 2...what a mess that turned out to be!
The things in Underspace aren't just promises, they're actually in the game. When we're saying that Underspace has ship customization or over 50 questlines, that's not a "it will have this". Those are in in the full game already, you can play them to completion.
Dang....
Long time coming and I'm too late - again.
Sounds like a little piece of X4. So why i should play Underspace, if i can have all of that in X4 and many more...?
Different goals. X4 is about building a space empire and the sandbox around that. Underspace is MUCH more of your traditional roleplaying game, just in space. That includes dungeons, quests, bosses, artifact equipment, the works.
It's like the difference between Mount & Blade versus Morrowind.
Does X4 have underspace in it? There is your answer.
So many space sims have traces of Freelancer in it, yet none of them could live up to the EXPERIENCE provided by it. FL had so many things coming together in such a way that resulted in said experience that so many of us were craving for years.. underspace looks like the closest we ever get to FL2 while also giving us something new.
Because X and Freelancer are two entirely different experiences. I love X, but I'll take Freelancer over it any day of the week.
Deutsch:
English:
So, the game looks 80% like Freelancer. Just the hud with the weapons on the right side, then the shield and torso beams of the opponents or even the border when you have acquired the target... I think they are having problems with the license because there are too many things similar to freelancers. I don't think Microsoft will like that.
P.S. It would also be possible if you could do the whole thing in German. My English is really bad^^
Ich habe es mit Homeworld 3 versucht, aber die Rückmeldungen dazu waren sehr verhalten und den Aufwand das selbe Video zu 80% nochmal zu machen in Deutsch ist es nicht wert (für mich). Sorry
@@CaptainCollins Alles gut. Dann wirds mal wieder Zeit, mein Englisch aufzubessern :-). Trotzdem danke für die Rückmeldung
It looks like a modded Freelancer :)
If this game doesnt have Cardamine, then it's not good... *Cardamine, cardamine, everybody wants cardamine!*
I dunno. I've seen the trailer to this game and it seems kinda cringe.
I love Freelancer and put some time into FL Discovery, but there seems to be a _lot_ of emphasis on aliens and shit. Like, huge, enormous aliens. Which, I guess, if that's what this game is going for, that's fine, it's just hard to not compare it to its predecessor given how obvious the bones of this game are. It's not that aliens weren't a thing in FL, it's just that they were obviously mysterious and legitimately fucking terrifying at times, whereas in this game they're pushed so hard that they're basically eye candy. I guess I'll keep an eye on it.
Underspace is a spiritual successor, but it's not trying to be a 1-1 Freelancer copy (though there is a modding team working on a total conversion for that already). Much of its core concepts were taken from a cancelled Elder Scrolls space project, and the game's explicitly more of a fantasy game, with the setting akin to something like Sunless Skies or Spelljammer.
That being said the trailer is giving you a VERY VERY tiny taste of what's actually out there. The game is absolutely enormous, so there's a lot of mystery and freaky alien stuff out there that makes Freelancer's dyson sphere look tame by comparison.
Lol I will say this on every one of these vids, this game has to be better then Discovery FL is or it will fail, after 17 years they still have an active server and player base with hundreds of ships and a huge galaxy full of systems to explore. i see people talking about freelancer as a memory, probably the ones that tried it once or twice. Im playing it right now
In my point of view, if freelancer was created today, it would have landing on stations and planets, walking on foot (space legs) and spacewalking. I don't think a space game where you "are the ship" has any chance of revolutionizing gaming today, even if it has a creative approach.
Underspace does indeed have that.
@@Pastaspace I didn't see it in the screenshots and gameplay in the steam page. Additionally, I have mentioned several things, by "that" you mean all of them? Space legs, spacewalking, landing on planets and leaving the ship? Not only "docking" to stations but actually landing on them? I would be more than happy to buy the game if so, but I am yet to watch some gameplay of the game that has this stuff.
@ So you can see gameplay of him walking around on a station at 5:00. We don't have seamless planet-to-space transitions because that's not the focus of the game, but much like stations you can land on planets and walk around on them. Space legs/spacewalking (or just EVA, for simplicity's sake) are a post-launch feature coming after the EA release, and it was originally a kickstarter stretch goal.
@@Pastaspace interesting, I must have been distracted when I went through that part. Thanks for proving me wrong, the game was already on my wishlist but I also marked it as "following" to remember I strongly intend to buy it -- if it had a price I'd just have purchased it right now.
What are the actions you can do while on foot during the game?
@ The closest comparison I'd say is how X4 or X Rebirth handles its on-foot sections. You can explore stations, talk to people, undertake quests, use services, or find secrets like hidden merchants or caches. You can also access and read terminals, books, and what you'd probably expect from an RPG like Skyrim. Where it differs is that there's a fair amount of quests that also take place on stations or interiors that turn the game more into almost a Myst style adventure game, where you're solving puzzles and piecing together clues in different ways. One of my favorite quests involves a random event when using the game's fast travel system wherein you wake up aboard a space train stuck in warp with the entire crew save yourself dead, and it's up to you to piece together what happens as the train goes further out of control.
lol, it even looks like freelancer 😄
