Bitcoin has not made a big splash. If it actually became big, countries would outlaw it. Imagine if there was an economic crash like in 2007-8, where the government needs to stabilize the system, if the currency was not controlled, what would you do? The idea of pooling processing power to maintain something online is powerful however and I think that is what they mean.
