The Moscow Rules with CIA Spy Legend Jonna Mendez
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 чер 2019
- In 1976, Tony Mendez and his future wife Jonna were CIA operatives in Moscow at one of the most dangerous moments in the Cold War. Soviets kept files on all foreigners, studied their patterns, tapped their phones, and even planted listening devices within the US Embassy. The conditions in Moscow and the paranoid nature of the society itself forced the CIA to refine its tactics to combat the KGB.
This new approach-including not only a new set of techniques but also a host of new technologies and disguise methods, as well as the recruitment of a new type of case officer-would become known as the “Moscow Rules,” and it would revolutionize clandestine operations for years to come.
Join Jonna for the launch of the Mendez’s new book THE MOSCOW RULES Tactics That Helped America Win the Cold War, where she and her late husband Tony tell the story of the intelligence breakthrough that turned the odds in America’s favor. Visit - www.spymuseum.org/

She clearly loved her husband so much, it’s lovely to hear and see her talk to lovingly about him.
Amazing woman.x
It made me almost tear up, ive seen her talk about him several times now & you can see her struggle to stay composed. I became a widow a few years ago, he passed young but we had been together since I was 14 so we basically grew up together. I know how hard it must've been to go out and talk about the book they wrote together so soon after he passed. She reminds me so much of my grandma, its so hard to imagine her as this incredibly brave spy & master of disguise
Julia I’m so sorry for what has happened to you. I can’t even imagine what you must have went through. Maybe still are going through. It’s my life ambition to be married to my husband for 60 years or more, but he’s 9 years older than me so I said I’d settle for 50 😂.
It hurts me to even think of these words to put in this sentence, so I have no idea how I’d cope if I lost him, well I do, I’d be crushed. I don’t know how I’d even go on.
I agree with you, it’s so hard to imagine that sweet woman as a hardcore spy, but at the same time, I bet she was so bad ass!
I could listen to her talk for a week straight. Fascinating stuff !!
with her contacts and ability's you would be brave not to listen it could get painful

Oh, you're so wrong! I would enjoy every minute of it.
Mrs. Mendez is a fascinating speaker and obviously fully qualified to speak on the subject. She is also an interesting person who would have made a great friend. Her loyalty to this country is admirable and rare these days. Prays for a long life and much happiness, Jonna.
@Sara Shepard -- Yes,of course the first thing you do when you join the intelligence services is keep your friends up to date with all the details??? Are you for real? if the answer's yes then heaven help us,seems stupidity has NO limits, why don't YOU give all your 'friends' your credit card details and pin Nos. and while your at it perhaps all your passwords as well ? I now feel temporarily 'stupid' for wasting time replying to someone who is quite clearly a short-sighted brainless idiot.
ua-cam.com/video/ZVwGHsqIMIQ/v-deo.html
@@MrBorerayshe's retired now, so she could talk about some things I'm sure. Besides, I'm sure she'd be an interesting friend even when not speaking on intelligence work. Your aggression towards this commenter is curious. Is this how you want to be in the world?
If I were in trouble, I would run to her.
i worked for a city government for 25yrs and
in the military deployed/many times (context).
in the past 25yrs and "post" 2011 amazing how many near "tell" all books from "dagger and cloak" personnel. almost "never" ending. one even about the "dog" that was in on may 2011. a "dog". a non-human animal now gets a (well-paid book deal) of his experience and "knowledge".
yes, yes of course: all cleared via their agency of not revealing specific information. i read (many) there books; many (not all) is a like puzzle you can put together if you "read" them. one reason, obviously money. folks buy these books like the "unknown".
one writing one; then the "next". 50yrs ago this was not so. but then again no internet, ebooks, and online speaking engagements.
i was "deployed" to thailand in about 2010; i was in a rural area near korat (NE thailand). medium city, beautiful and about 200K population. some, now few; but not many "ex-pat". i met a guy at a coffee shop about 62yoa. no doubt a retired fella from "virginia".
did he "look at me", no. he lived off his savings, pension and beautiful thai (30yoa) wife; in quietness and tranquility. knowing what he contributed was "substantial" to our nation's defense. he said he taught online (political science) to a university back in the US.
nothing more than that: he knew that even 30+ yrs ago; the value/depth of his contribution(s) was valued in his quietness of today.
can not "tell" that to the money providers and publishers of:
simon and shuster and "others".
do this: look for how many "agents" from the ISI, RaW or former KGB (in numbers) write a "book" of their 25+ yrs. of "knowledge".
you will find "wisdom" in that search of barnes and noble or amazon.
very, very few if any at all. their information is not "for" sale on noble and "barnes".
Thank you and your husband
for your service.
Sara Shepard Hmmmm... You sounded like a bitter Russian whose country was outsmart by an organization that she and her husband worked for. Are you the old KGB or the current FSB? Comrade?
Wow! Breathtaking!! Who needs John LeCarre with this lecture!
what an absolute fascinating woman! could listen to her stories forever ❤
My thoughts exactly. I could be like a little kid/grandson just sitting at her knee, and listen to every one of her stories that she’d share with me
I feel exactly the same! I've been watching her videos all afternoon and love her more with each one!
Although I agree that she's a fascinating woman she probably distributed crack to the hood back in the day and certainly got innocent kids killed more than once.
Have a nice evening c:

I am addicted to listening to her here on UA-cam! I was in the Army in Germany during the Cold War, part of the Headquarters Battalion for the Pershing II nuclear missiles. You always had the feeling that anything could go down at any minute.
We were all afraid, very afraid back then. For some reason, probably the wrong one, this fear is not as prevalent today. Might make a come back soon.
When I see her and listen to her voice, I imagine some cozy grandma sitting on her rocking chair, knitting all night long.
She is truly an American gem! Thank you for your immense service.
I had a great aunt who studied piano in Moscow in the 1930s. One day the teacher got up in class and announced "All foreigners are spies!". My great aunt said all her friends turned around and just stared at her.
That must have been awful for your great aunt to hear that. It was once like that for us Irish to hear countries calling us "a nation of terrorists." The world used to judge us by all the terrorist attacks by IRA in UK. That was in the days before IRA ceasefire. After that, we gradually gained respectability.
The part your great aunt didn't tell you is how she then "neutralized" everyone in that room with half a piece of notebook paper and a fanny pack in 12 seconds from a stationary seated position as any respectable spy would.
I was ten when " the Jewish nightmare " started. I was living in Kharkiv and was in 3rd grade. And since I was adopted by this wonderful Jewish family I had no reason to believe that I was anything else. So they started these " political education " classes and the teacher would tell us horror stories about the Israelis and how they torture and kill the Palestinians. And the students would turn and look at us like WE were the enemy. So THAT aspect never really changed. Sorry if you were hoping for something different.
@@Goldie_Hawn_Solo
Decades later, her great aunt would teach John Wick how to take a man out with just a pencil.
..and a full grown one at that.
‘The Moscow Rules’ is FANTASTIC! Definitely a must read/hear. I got the audiobook version. Love it! I listened to it straight through 2 days. Can’t say enough great things about it.
Great job Jonna & Tony! R.I.P. Tony! ❤️❤️❤️
Does she do the reading?
I got the audiobook too! It was amazing!! 💚💚Sadly, she does not narrate it, but the narrator they got did a really good job!

Pls can I have a copy
Do you, maybe, have a link for her book?
I visited this museum late in 2005 upon the glowing recommendations of the friend I was staying with in the area. Nowhere near completing my experience, I phoned her to tell her not to hold supper; I was going to see and read absolutely everything at the museum!! Most highly recommended educational venue!! (And thanks to my friend for the warm hospitality and prompt to experience The ISM!!)
I came across this by accident and was hooked! Ever since Mission impossible in the 60s, I've been fascinated by espionage. Quarantine has allowed me to binge watch most of the videos by the spy museum. How to visit in the future after we get a vaccine. Keep the videos coming! We're in for the long haul!
Same. I just saw her video with Wired where she reviewed Spy movies and talked about if each scene was realistic. She talks kind of like my grandma did,. Just very similar and its so hard to imagine this adorable lady as a badass CIA spy. Its also interesting to be reminded how volatile relations with US & Russia has been and continues to be. It makes their interference with the 2016 election feel much more ominous and violating than it initially registered as in my mind.
Her cadence seemed so familiar and relaxing to me. Then she mentioned her hometown and it all made sense lol
There's a video of her being interviewed in French. Her voice is very different but still very lovely when she's speaking in French
@@Juwlz Julia, do try to remember that 2016 is two years AFTER the 2014 Ukrainian coup. Maybe that FSB officer who attacked our guy had just lost someone on Donbass. And the rules Jonna is talking about? A Gentlemen's Agreement about not being totally nasty to the " enemy " agents- well, the FBI broke it in 2014. So all the bets are off. Sorry.
@@Juwlz that was a great video!
I visited in December 2005 while visiting family and friends in the state. I skipped riding the commuter train back to my friend’s home - she had strongly recommended that I visit the museum - for supper because I absolutely HAD TO see EVERYTHING and read EVERY caption!! Fascinating, amazing place!!
Mrs. Mendez, I simply want to say, not only to you and your husband, and not only to everyone in the American Intelligence community, but also to the Intelligence personnel of America's allies, I simply want to thank you all for your service in defense of Liberty and Freedom for all. I truly appreciate your commitment to keeping the West free from the tyranny of the Communist World.
Tell that to the innocent pro-democracy dissidents who were tortured in South America by police forces taught and propped up by thr CIA. I think you'd feel different if it were your children who had been sodomized to death in a CIA black site.
You thank them too for all the coups that destroyed countries?
For the paramilitary death squads they supported in south America? For drone bombing weddings because a phone was detected?
Wake up these people aren't heroes. They are mostly rats serving the powerful.
Thank you!
Fascinating & Grateful for Your & Tony's Service to Our Country!!! No No's & No Yes'...
Excellent. Thank you for your service!
Thank you.

Thank you so much for your service and also to Tony. God bless you always. I have a mental challenge and the Spy Museum keeps me thinking. You kept my attention and I loved your story. I’m glad to know I can buy books there. I’ll get on that. I so enjoy the Museum. Thanks again. Joey 🇺🇸👠👠

Thanks mrs.Mendez..
I just got MasterClass as a gift and I’m really hoping she’s included or will be ASAP. Although understandably limited in what can be said, she’s still so awesomely engaging and knowledgeable it’d be a damn shame to overlook her expertise and expertise.
Thank you for your superlative service to our country.
Absolutely fascinating, I could listen to this lady for hours, thank you

You're so polite and PC. It's adorable. Considering the fact I caught Aunt Jonna in a lie on at least two separate occasions. Love her anyway. 😀
Once more a fascinating talk by Jonna. Was hanging on to her every word from start to finish.
Even though the audio is absolutely terrible in places.
We hear you loud and clear on this one. We're working to improve the overall quality of our programs. Thank you for continuing to tune-in.
@@IntlSpyMuseum Thank you for keeping up with the comments! 😃
I know audio is hard, especially when recording a live event. Briefing the speakers on how to use the mic would be a good thing to do so they do not come too close to it or move too far away from it. Any stationary or handheld mic is prone to issues like that unless the speaker knows what they are doing and is experienced enough. I have certainly been burned by not telling people this. And even if you do, the speaker does not necessarily remember it in the moment. And there is only so much you can fix in post.
Wireless Clip on / lav mics are (at least in my experience) the least problematic ones. As long as you find a place to clip the mic - ideally, upper chest and with the capsule pointing up, without it rubbing up against clothes/beards/chest hair - and to stick the belt pack you should be golden. The obvious downside is they require some prep work. Might be difficult if the speaker wears a dress or something. But that should generally be doable in a minute or two, and has a huge potential payoff in quality. And the batteries last half a day with no issues (my frame of reference being the Sennheiser EW series).
Anyways: keep up the good work!
All best from Germany 👍
One of my favorite museums
I've bought the book now. Fascinating!

THANK YOU MS MENDEZ I saw and ad for employment of CIA in 2019 SEC is my passion
Would you be suspicious of the little old lady? Knowing what my beloved aunt figure is capable of, the answer is " YES! " 🤣
I was lucky to have traveled as an exchange student, the program started by Eisenhower, took us to northern Europe and, at the time, U.S.S.R. in the summer of1989;
Leningrad and Moscow.
The 25+ kids and the adult American teacher/chaperones who traveled with us were intensely monitored.
As seniors in the coming school year, the daily bottles of Vodka were not passed over.
We were detained, we met the coolest kids and I brought one of the first portable CD players and a lot of discs..
Wound up with two amazing kids and a lot of memories
Thanks for changing my life
Looking forward to a visit to the museum in DC

My cousin zig… thank you so much 😊
It's 2023 - April 2 - and listening to Jonna has confirmed so much of what I have suspected of Russia . . . in particular their brutality. But if we have people like Jonna and Tony Mendez, we at least have a chance. I've been reading other stories - for instance the Walker spy group - and was a bit depressed by these stories. Hearing Jonna tell her story has renewed my confidence n our people. Thank you Jonna and Tony for your lives of service and courage.
I taught Scuba Diving to an individual when I was Stationed at Howard AFB in Panama in the 1980’s. His name was Kyle “Dusty” Foggo. He gave me his business card, which says he was with the State Department.
I went TDY to Honduras and met him at a “safehouse” there. That is when I found out he was really with the CIA.
Years later I found out he had been supplying the arms to the Contras.
He became a Deputy Director of the CIA.

Also being from Kansas, a lot of the state's larger businesses have been leaving or purchased in recent years. Boeing, Sprint, Cerner. Not sure that it says anything about the region necessarily, but there do not seem to be replacements coming in.

Kingfisher beer and samosa in a cafe in India- seems like Tony Mendez didn't leave any cool indulgence during his time, back in the day :)
The walls are amazing! No bubbled contact paper! Yeah! I wish I could come out and see it but with c-19, Im sunk and stuck at home... : (
Fascinating but amazed they even allow these to be discussed.
I was thinking the same thing. ??? Why talk about lipstick and pen cameras? Aren't these techniques and devices still used today? Why tip your hand?

I wonder if they're there full speed ahead now ...or maybe too difficult now as it was probably easier in cold War times or pre Ukraine War as there was more openess between the two then.
Jonna is such an amazing lady. What a career she has had. God bless her and Tony.
What was her favorite book? Don’t feel like rewatching
I'd really like one of these from Oleg Gordievsky. The most important spy of the cold war.
Like most of you I looked for the video and found a short video clip of the incident. Yes, a cab pulls up to the entrance, a man in civilian attire gets out of the cab, and as he begins walking to the embassy door another man dressed in what looks like a military or police style uniform comes out of a guard shack and tackles him. They both 'grapple on the ground as the man in civilian attire shrimps toward the electronic door and it opens. The clip ends. I didn't see any "bloody beating" occur in this clip, just two men wrestling. does anyone know of another, maybe longer clip?
Jonna opens her presentation by revealing the SIGNIFICANT investments in Research and Development which eventually 'spun-off' toward 'private-industry'. A 'quid pro quo' must be assumed.
Marti Peterson story is amazing in itself. Go watch the Team House podcast she did. She’s an amazing woman

On the brink of world war once again. 😢
@JonnaMendez
And so recently I just finished watching the panel on integrity. Then I'm not sure if this is the proper nomenclature but for station and agency. Being as there was FBI thank you ma'am. The state department story was fine. At any rate, I'm just a civilian out here doing independent stuff and research and finding myself in situations that are most exciting and incredible. Well credible. Laughing out loud vicariously. I have a deep interest here. I find it intriguing that there isn't a wider reach so to speak. I'm with freedoms being considered and all that. However sometimes it seems like the bad guys have an upper hand. And that has to be the most difficult part that I can think of. I'm not politicize. Not to sway to any religious ideology. Why the heck can't we just go get the bad guys? Cuz there's some of them in each one of those groups. Sorry about the cuz but I'm not changing it it's talk to text this stupid computer that I have that has a phone in it dang it that's the comedy part. Anyway I love you guys I hope I can come see you someday. Thanks Chris Costa. Amazing work you guys and to the Mendez clan. Holy crap. Badass. I hope that gets by the children's section. Somebody call Chris Wallace. There's another joke part for you I got to go can't stop laughing

A KGB guy in 2016? Are you still fighting SMERSH?
The CIA is bored and has gone public and the public is the amazed audience enjoying legendary spies with charming glamorous photos bragging about what should not have been done. Even less cheered for. The question is still as an audience is asking was there an enemy and what was the CIA spying on? An enemy or just a fellow "business" german competitor gone left. And together raised the adversity quotient 😮
