    I had a go on one of these recently and absolutely loved it. It was like riding my mountain bike with an engine strapped to it - super punchy and agile. I'm 6,2" and didn't find it that cramped (although I'm all torso). I wouldn't want to tour on it but as a town fun bike, it's one of the best I've ridden.

    Great video--I just bought the Nighshift model, and I am loving it for a town and head up in the canyon bike. Blast to ride--love the ABS brakes! Thanks!

    Had a go on one of these two weeks ago I loved it for its style but I was blown away by the poke it had.If I had one it would have to have the Termi pipe and maybe the full throttle flat bars, by far better than the Bonneville if you are into this type of bike!

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  8 років тому

      +Neil Cole (Smoothound675) Well all a matter of personal opinion of course, the Duke has done very well in the press and seems widely very highly regarded. I think a Termi is the way to go with any Ducati isn't it? Ride safe and thanks for watching and commenting - all the best - TMF

      +BigA Hi BigA, yes I think you'll really like the way it rides - if you like the look of the baby Duke and get the whole modern/retro thing then I don't think you can go far wrong.....other than that snatchy throttle I couldn't fault the way the machine rides or the tremendous build quality. No doubt these are brilliant value......be interested to hear what you think after your test ride? Especially if you find the throttle a bit binary too??? Cheers and thanks for watching - TMF

I've never ridden a KTM of any kind, in the main for some reason they don't appeal to me - think it's something to do with orange but I can't be sure!! The 1290 only ever seems to get good reviews so I'm sure it is a great bike, but I'm not tempted to try one. Having said that I do like the KTM dirt bikes, for some reason the orange seems a little less garish on those!!! I just bought one for the winter and economy, for when he 999s is in storage for the odd day trip. I love it. 110mph A road and nimble Monster engine is sweet. The fuel delivery is way better than my 999s too. Came with Fly screen and tail tidy also. And what sold it to me was the miles 7777miles absolutly mint, from CMC Cannock. • @CornishMotorcycleDiaries
    @CornishMotorcycleDiaries 8 років тому

    Props for doing the low speed test on this bike which I've not seen in any other test. Having both test ridden a Scrambler and as a former Bonnie owner (2002 T100 & 2009 SE) I can say that the Scrambler overall feels a much more urgent bike. I'm also not at all worried by the lack of retro faithfulness which concerns you. The big selling point of the Ducati for me is the light weight, which at my age is a massive plus. I must say tho' that the new 2016 Bonnies look really cool and I can't wait to give them a try too.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  8 років тому

      +sfbdotcom Yes I agree with you on the urgency over the Bonnies! There's no doubt the Duke is a great bike, it just doesn't do it for me in the same way as the Triumphs do - and as you say, the new 2016 Bonnies look a step up again, so I'm holding onto my cash until I've had a chance to at least see those at the NEC in December.....exciting times ahead eh?

    • @CornishMotorcycleDiaries
      @CornishMotorcycleDiaries 8 років тому

      Well I've just read your review again having now had the experience of trying out a Street Twin and slinging a leg over the new T120 Bonnie. (It's still a good well-balanced review BTW). And... I'd still go with the Ducati, the T120 is quite a heavy machine and somehow looks it, especially when compared to older Bonnies which I think captured the look better. The Street Twin just felt a bit underwhelming, despite all the praise the press has lauded it with. Anyway, as you quite rightly said, horses for course and I think this machine will meet my personal needs, with of course a few mods to suit. Thanks again for a good review.

    I went to the Kawasaki green Friday launch event last night already to fall in love with Z900RS which I kinda did. However on the way in I stopped to look at the 2018 Ducati Scrambler Desert Sled in shiny black. I kept looking back at it and now can't get it out if my head. Looks like I will be going on at least two test rides when I have saved enough to buy :-)

    Saw a Australian review when they first came out, and they took both triumph and ducati scramblers to some very light off road terrain. Think it was the lightness and the poke that put the Ducati just in front for town riding, but the exhaust is to low even for light terrain and they managed to break it going over a couple of light rocks. They didn't mention how small the bike was though, so will scratch it off the list.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer

    Rode a. Desert Sled version of the Ducati Scrambler about a month ago. Very unimpressed with it. Seat was one of the worst seats I've ever experienced. I also did not like the rear shock digging into my leg at a stop. Power was pretty weak after 75mph. I came away from riding it disappointed, I thought about buying one a year ago. Thanks for the review TMF, as always top notch work!

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  8 років тому

      +Patrick Harrison Cheers Patrick - I do like the look of the R Nine T, if I get a chance to ride one I will put up a review but I don't have any plans on buying another boxer powered machine at this time so I'm not sure a comparative review will be imminent :0( Sorry about that. Thanks for stopping by and for your kind words - all the best - TMF.

    • @patrickhd34
      @patrickhd34 8 років тому

      +TheMissendenFlyer - No worries. I like the look of the R9T too, but a couple of grand more buys a more versatile boxer, the GS or GSA. That said when you see an R9T in a showroom you just think "wow". The build quality and finish is very impressive...the gurgle and pop on the overrun...oh sh*t hide the bank card.
      I guess it's the sort of bike you buy to go on "coffee runs", sunny Sunday mornings, out before the roads get busy, etc. Would not want to take it out in the rain :)

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  8 років тому

      +Patrick Harrison Indeed, it would definitely be a pride of ownership rather than a practical do-it-all machine (and I can certainly vouch for the GS being the king at that!). Cheers - TMF

    Recently discovered your channel and I'm really liking your approach to reviews and riding. I would love to know your opinion on which bike is better for heavy traffic commuting, The Scrambler or the Street Triple? I own a GSX-R750 which is my fast road/Track weekend ride, and a Ninja 250R which I use for daily commuting (and it has worked well), but I want something more torquey and fast, while keeping the nimbleness, small profile and agility of the 250. Would really appreciate it if you could give me your thoughts on this. Cheers!

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  8 років тому +2

      +Alclab V. Well I am very biased on this one as I wasn't a huge fan of the Scrambler but I am of the Street Triple - give me that any day! The STR is nimble, torquey, light weight and quick...perfect for commuting I reckon (to be fair so would the Scrambler be). Thanks for the kind words and welcome along to the channel, glad you are liking it...all the best - TMF

    really cool bike, always loved the retro look. one think that i didn't like on this particular model are the wheels, i would prefer to have spoke's to give it more that retro and scrambler look. but i assume that could be easily arranged, i think ducati has lots of aftermarket extra's to choose before to commit the cash.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  8 років тому

      Spokes certainly look good but are a pain to keep clean - maybe have a set of each to change as the mood takes you?? :0)

    • @kaveiros75
      @kaveiros75 8 років тому

      +ripmax333 You can go for the Classic or Urban Enduro models if you want spokes. But unfortunately they cost significantly more. Spokes are usually less rigid when in proper road, but are more preferable when the road has bumbs of off-road. I must say though that I have test-riden the Urban Enduro model, and still it was very solid and great handling.

    I have been watching your reviews, they are very well done thanks, takes me back to my youth in England with those lovely country roads, now living in Canada. I have to admit I don't get the design of the Ducati Scrambler versions, they just don't look right to me, the tank and seat don't do it for me, not like the Ducati Classics from several years ago. From your camera's view the throttle / brake cables looping over the speedo look terrible, the Triumph Scrambler is much cleaner and the look is more authentic.I'd be interested to see you review a Street Twin Scrambler and Street Cup, they look very nice, might be a little low powered though.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer

    In the movie Venom they've falsely advertised the sound of this engine. While Eddie was riding on normal roads, it sounded like a superbike in a tunnel. If anyone buys this bike because of the sound effects in the movie - they might feel a bit disappointed

    Another good review, I don't like the clock & throttle / brake cables propped up in air look a bit of a after thought, round mirrors might be better for the style of bike. A case of old & new not working

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  8 років тому

      +vince halls Yes that's exactly my point - you're either retro or you're not, missing the two as Ducati have done with this bike (great though technically it is) just doesn't work IMO.....cheers for watching and commenting once again, good to have you along!

    +Samuel Graydon Sounds like we are in complete agreement! You weren't tempted to wait until the new Triumph Scrambler is announced later this month????

    • @samuelgraydon5488
      @samuelgraydon5488 8 років тому +1

      +TheMissendenFlyer No. A few reasons for this. Firstly I really really like the current bike so didn't see the point in waiting for something that might not be to my liking. Then there is the wait itself, how long until the new Scrambler is available? On top of that I'd rather wait a year or so and let them work out the inevitable teething troubles before jumping in. I can always trade in for a new one if they turn out to be amazing bikes but I have a feeling the older air cooled ones will be worth hanging on to, much like an air cooled 911.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  8 років тому

      +Samuel Graydon Completely get you on all those points, my thinking has been the same - my assumption is though that there will be some air cooled scrambler bargains once the new models have broken cover, but before they're widely available - think I might take a look at the NEC in November (and then probably decide air cooled is the way to go........!!). :Keep me up to date with how you get on - what colour have you gone for??

      @samuelgraydon5488 8 років тому

      +TheMissendenFlyer Well the weather hasn't stayed fine haha (we knew that would happen). As for the back end of the bike, I'm not sure yet but of course the OEM lights etc will have to go as they look terrible in my opinion. I do know that I want to keep with the off road theme of the bike and any mods I do will be with that in mind.

    I don't think Ducati Scramblers are retro-bikes. They are modern / contemporary bikes.
    If you look at a 2018 Lamborghini Aventador you wouldn't say it's a retro-car just because it looks vaguely similar to the 1970s Lamborghini Countach right? ;)

    I have a scrambler. It’s not “small”. Obviously it’s a relative term, but listening to some reviews, you’d think it’s a Grom. It’s not. It’s a beautiful machine with loads of torque. That snatchy throttle - it’s true but you get used to it quite fast.

    I don't know about anyone else but I was getting three distinct impressions from the styling. From the left hand side it looks like a Triumph. From the front, like a retro Honda and from the right hand side the almost Hypastrada exhaust style is pure Ducati

      +fivefootsixtriumph .....a realistic question as it happens ;0) - I would go for the Trumpet as it (to me at least) just feels more authentic, looks properly retro, is more characterful and is a Triumph! Bizarrely the Duke is a little too quick for my tastes, these sort of bikes are for lazily enjoying the scenery. I test rode one today. Fantastic performance and handling on a nice smooth road. However, ruined for me by a really snatchy throttle, harsh ride and uncomfortable seat. Plus it feels a bit - toy like. I wanted to get off of it pretty quick. Also it cut out on me for no apparent reason when filtering through traffic. After returning it I had a second test ride on a Triumph Scrambler to confirm my choice (the bike in my pic) and bought one in black with an Arrow system to be fitted at the 500 mile service. Happy days :D

    Hey TMF, did you ask what the servicing costs were on the Scrambler? I was looking around the Ducati showroom a few months ago and was rather shocked at the servicing costs of the Multistrada.
    That's one of the reasons I like the GS so much, the boxer engine makes maintenance so easy, even the valve checks/adjustments are a doddle......
    Cheers DM

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  8 років тому +1

      +DervMan .....no I didn't ask, as I was fairly quick to make my mind up that the bike wasn't for me so I wasn't as thorough as I otherwise would have been! Can't say I've noticed my BMW dealer being that cheap on the service front yet for my GS - one more to go and then I'm off to my trusted independent spanner man for half price servicing.....

    • @TheDervMan
      @TheDervMan 8 років тому

      +TheMissendenFlyer I was in my local Ducati dealer back in the summer (Riders Brislington) and the sales guy was saying a two year 'major' service was around £700! That's the beauty of the boxer, I was able to check/adjust the valve clearances in around an hour. I have no idea what the servicing costs are from a BMW main dealer but I'd hope it's half the Ducati cost given it's so much easier to access everything.... Perhaps I'm being naive ;-)
      I even had the dreaded ABS motor failure on mine, BMW charge £1,200 for the motor alone. A bit of research on the GS forums and half a day of my time and it was fixed for 'free'.
      All you need is a GS-911 and some thing to balance the throttle bodies (I use a Twinmax) and you can easily do all the servicing yourself. The GS is such a simple bike to work on. :-)

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  8 років тому +1

      +DervMan Good news for us all then.....my first annual service on the GS at my local dealer cost over £800 (but that did include the supply/fit of the aux driving lights).....might have to pop up to yours next time with my toolbox :0)

    • @TheDervMan
      @TheDervMan 8 років тому

      +TheMissendenFlyer I expect the lights were £450 inc fitting...... I fitted a set of BMW spots on mine today, I have a HID bulb in the headlight so the spots are more about 'being seen'. I have the original GS-911 which won't work with the LC!

      @TheMissendenFlyer  8 років тому

    The concept of 'retro' is a stylistic fabrication, like relic-ed guitars. The Scrambler makes a slight nod to the original Scrambler singles, but it's entirely a modern interpretation of what a bike can be. As you stated, "It goes like stink and can't be faulted" so why the need to defend the Triumph in comparison? I also disagree the Scrambler is a small bike. It's heavier than my old Ducati 750 GT and similar dimensions to a 60s Bonneville - neither of which were considered small. The gearing is a compromise of dirt tractability and road ease, so yes, it's a bit short but a few fewer teeth on the rear sprocket seems to smooth out the snatchiness at slow speeds. This is a bike built to enjoy riding and it delivers on that amply.

    Hi, regarding whether the Ducati Scrambler is a retro or modern bike, Ducati never called this bike a retro bike. The way Ducati put it from the very beginning was ... if we (Ducati) had never stopped producing scramblers in the 70s, this is what our scramblers would look like ... I read this in a newspaper article 2 years ago. So, it is a modern bike. It was never Ducati's intention to produce a retro bike.

    I personally like the new-look and retro blending a lot - exept for that horrible digital speedo-meter of course! Right now, I am between buying this one, the MotoGuzzi V7ii and the Yamaha MT-07, which is no retro at all but similarly fun to ride, well set up too, and a lot cheaper. But the pillion will probably be suffering on the Yamaha, and I think that its build quality is nowhere near the Ducati.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  8 років тому

      +kaveiros75 ...actually my experience of Yamaha's are that they are excellent quality machines - I take it you've ridden each??

    • @kaveiros75
      @kaveiros75 8 років тому

      TheMissendenFlyer Yes, I have. For about half an hour each, but I tried to simulate every possible condition. Ducati and Yamaha where extremely fun to ride and very rigid. MotoGuzzi was very enjoyable too, but in a different way. The engine makes you feel great, it accelerates as hell, but when leaning over, it didn 't give so much confidence. Don 't know though if it were the worn out tyres of the demo bike or rear shock weakness.
      On the MT-07 test ride bike, the plastics had gone somehow loose, with a lot less than 10.000 kms on. Of course... it was a demo bike too, so who knows?
      My personal experience also shows me that usually (ok... not always) European bikes tend to look in better shape than the Japanese ones after some years of regular use.
      I would like someone else (with long term experience) to comment on the MT-07 built quality though!

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  8 років тому +1

      TheMissendenFlyer Aha! I want a bike that feels great on a relaxed (short or longer) ride, solo or with a passenger... but also can give me good confidence and feedback when I feel like pushing things a bit harder. ;)
      I do no track days, and my highway rides/travels have been decreased dramatically over the last few years. Since we are spoiled for choices nowadays... why not put my hard earned cash on a bike that will (certainly transport me but also) make me smile every time I ride it? :D

    nice little thing but here in the US it wouldn't really make sense. Buell did that kind of thing here for a long time, we got sweet Buells of all kinds still out there for a fraction of that price with super torquey 1000s and 1200cc motors that are cheap and easy to work on. When you think about it, what does this offer that a M2, X1 or XB does not offer in spades, besides being Italian and being a Ducati? A 2000 dollar X1 will blow this thing out of the water...
