Woodturning - Cracktastic Russian Olive Bowl
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 жов 2024
- I turned this spherical bowl from a piece of green Russian Olive wood. A friend gave me several pieces and I sealed most of them and set them aside to dry for a few years, but I was impatient to try one out, so I rough-turned this bowl leaving 1” walls and put it into an oven for 24 hours. As I expected, it cracked…and not in a pretty way.
Still, I like the grain of the wood and it made an interesting piece.

Very beautiful art work 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Great looking piece
Very pretty. It’s like a sun burst
Thanks!
@Joseph Craft - That's exactly what I was thinking. 🙂
We share similar flora and fauna over here in Idaho, and tho russian olives do provide another striking color range of the natural palette, they are mostly seen a one of those natives that are a trash tree. I have seen some folks do some very imaginative and judicious pruning to make them more attractive in their landscapes. I never would have thought the finished results of turning the wood to be so fantastic. Thanx.
You’re welcome!
Very nice. Lathe work is most relaxing to me. I truly liked watching the progress. Thanks.
Nice work👍
Nice work, looks a little like oak, great shape, stay safe, John. (Watch out for the BOTS below.)
Thanks 👍
Nice job. Olive is a great wood to turn.
I think so too!
I thought you were crazy starting off the way you did… I was wrong, can’t argue with the result. Nice turning
Very cool. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Very nice!!!
Thanks!!
that looks freaking amazing would have been nice if it got some more contrast in the heart wood but still looks good
Yeah I agree. thanks!
Nice, very nice.
Thank you! Cheers!
Very nice thanks for sharing. What sanding unit are you using. Thanks!
Very nice, It's seems that your CA glue is black. Is it a special one?
I am a beginner and sanding is some time very long. You used a turning machin, which kind of drill do you use?
Thanks a lot
David from France
Starbond makes a black CA glue which is very useful to have. I have a couple of drills. One Ryobi and one Mikita, but I usually just let the spinning action of the lathe do the work.
Crack-tastic was an appropriate name but the piece looks good anyway.
thanks
What did you spray on the bowl before the CA glue? I assume it was to prevent staining???
Yep. it was just some lacquer.
maybe a little more gloss ?
👏👏👏👏👏👏👍🤗
thank you!
Or nuts.
yup!
