I think Aimi's fatal flaw, mostly just in this competition, is that when she makes a mistake she seems to get a bit flustered and tends to rush afterwards which in turn creates more mistakes if she can't keep up with the tempo.
I've noticed that a lot as well almost one mistake leads to bad pedal or tempo but she is much better than me so I can't really say much 😭
If an amateur pop musician uploads a song to UA-cam, they get some nice comments.
If a skilled classical pianist plays a difficult piece with some flaws, UA-cam explodes in anger.
Everyone try to sound like they are experts. It's actually a difficult piece to play well. I will never get to this level, and I doubt anyone who waste their time criticizing other pianists on UA-cam will either.
Cause this is an international though competition where no mistakes are the most important win condition
ralsei 21 true, but if someone were to play it to perfectly it wouldn’t matter if that person didn’t have any musicality and played like a robot. She makes a lot of mistakes but it’s still better than a whole lot of people.
To a fixed extent I agree. But we're comparing her to her peers. She clearly didn't play well. Others played it much better.

Dearest Aimi, I know you are experiencing great fatigue and working relentlessly. You have still given the piece its impact and its meaning. Well done !
No other pianist impresses me more then Aimi for the way in wich she is so able with such small hands.

A lot of people asking "how was she able to advance to the next stage after this?" The answer is quite simple: the judges know better than the UA-cam crowd what to look for. The judges look for musicianship and potential, not a blunder scorecard. This isn't the Olympics balance beam where you win by doing super-hard feats without deductions. The judges' job is to identify the pianist people will want to hear in 5 or 20 years, whether or not op.53 is the piece she'll be playing then. If they think she'll be playing phenomenal scherzos, mazurkas and nocturnes, but maybe not op. 44 or 53, then she's what they want.
Her playing is beautiful. I hope that as she matures, it will become a bit more introspective; I hope she will put intimacy in the place of velocity . Nonetheless, I think she plays this piece beautifully.

This is one of my favorite pieces and I have listened to it more times than I can count. I am not a musician or anything...but this rendition appears "rushed" and devoid of "feeling".
Seong-Jin Cho's performance of this same piece at the same competition made choke up and cry.

I play this piece and I l recommend Yundi Li's play, but they have the some style of play. She is tiny but has large amount of power. So amazing.
자세히 들어보면, 상당히 긴장했음과 동시에 흥분상태가 이어져 빠른템포가 이어지다가 결국은 연속된 미스를 내며 연주 완성도가 크게 떨어지게 되는... 어떤 면에서는 인간적이네요.

Sabrina i agree, the 64th notes in the middle of the piece in the version I originally heard are not aspost to be that fast it should be moderato.

Her greed completely spoiled the play. I could not finish listening to this performance. I clearly remember that unhappy look she was throwing all the way throughout the awarding ceremony while the others were celebrating and congratulating on the winners' achievements. Aimi, I like you so this is a piece of advice that is coming from the bottom of my heart and I think you should cultivate your inner beauty first.

She indeed seemed very pissed when the others were given their awards but as i think for no reason because 8th place is more than enough for her ability!!!!!!
Don't get me wrong she can play some wonderful music but when it comes to the very difficult pieces she clearly has not the skill at its full peak yet! I do not doubt that she will become a great pianist some day! When compared to Seong or Kate Liu (who was my favourite) she is not mature enough!
You assume. Even if you are correct, criticism is not our place. That is her business and her parents. I love her, praise her and thank her for the joy her hard work has brought my way.

No offence, but it appears clear that she was very nervous from those fatal mistakes that she've made. Messy piece, I have no idea how she made it past this stage. She played better in other stages, but she messed up her concerto and etude as well ...
Świetna interpretacja. Niestety trema chyba znaczna? 0:55 fatalna skucha. 5:34 kolejna skucha i jeszcze dwie 3:13 i 5:53, ale mimo to miło słuchać muzyki brata mojej prababki Ludwiki.

미스 터치는 그렇다 쳐도
폴로네이즈는 본디 장엄,웅장,무거움이 본질인 곡인데 이 연주는 너무 가벼움
그리고 저 자리는 본인 리사이틀이 아닌 콩쿨이었다는 것
실력이 뛰어난 연주자인데 폴로네이즈 6번 연주는 많이 아쉬움이 남는 연주였네요
Very powerful performance, just a few silly mistakes and some rushed parts with the left hand maybe a bit too loud but great performance!

Chang-yong Lee I agree, he gives one of the best interpretations of this piece.
She has enormous talent but I think some Chopin works just require a certain amount of sheer physical mass and muscle to pull off without strain. Then you can get much of the force from gravity and the back and shoulders, leaning into the keyboard. Then you can focus more exertion on fine motor execution, without exhaustion. But let's face it, there is a big "power lifting" aspect to this, and you need enough sheer brawn that this aspect doesn't challenge you. Barcarolle might be a better repertoire choice for her physical make-up at this stage. That said, musically she's definitely up to any Chopin, at the highest level. But a few of the big muscle pieces may not be apt.

조성진이 크리스탈 클리어라면, 미안하지만 에이미는 삑사리가 좀 있네요... touch만 보자면.. 그리고 약간 부웅 떠 있는 느낌이 드네요.. 차분하고 장중한 조성진의 연주에 비하면 가볍고도 떠 있는 분위기..

Heroic performance despite ONE bad note. Also, very instructive and effective use of
thumb-over in the big scales and arpeggios that can be seen and analyzed most effectively going frame-by-frame.

+Carl Hopkinson Well, I just read on a piano blog that she and most the expected favorite pianists have advanced to the 3rd round. This performance of the Heroic Polonaise might have done it for her. She was very nervous when she started the 2nd stage. She can breath a sigh of relief before she starts the 3rd stage. The judges pretty much put the pianists who were the most popular or had the biggest applause and put them in there. So I was able to guess who the 20 pianist were.
+Vette gaddia I do not agree with your suggestion of placing greater applauded pianists in 3rd stage.... The fact they are applauded more is simply because they are worthy of applause in regards to their Ability. You should see the credentials of the Jury .... It is outstanding! I do not support such a theory, and if you were able to determine who the 20 were, then you should be a fortune teller... and I invite you to the horse races with me... we will make a ton of money.... lol
+Richard Deschenes You completely misunderstood what I meant to say. I meant that it APPEARS the jurors chose the most popular pianists with the most applause. Of course I think talent and poise is more important. But I can see this jury is being at least slightly swayed by the audience, hence I made a striking guess on who will be on it. But you have to admit, most of the pianists who advance to the 3rd round deserved it.

I know very good these composition and i can to say : for me all ok.
She is a fine pianist- there's no doubt about that but the problem is there are literally hundreds of pianists like her, at her level.
I'm afraid based on this particular performance and on her performance throughout the competition, her technique, her musical understanding, including her grasp of the musical structure of the pieces she played are way below those of Seung-Jin Cho and others at the very pinnacle of world pianism.
At this level, you simply can't make so many glaring technical mistakes. Also, she doesn't seem to see the 'whole' picture- she is like a bull charging at a target, without paying any attention to its surroundings. The phrasing, the nuances, the ebb and flow of the tempo, dynamism, mood and musical ideas are simply non-existent.
I'm surprised that she even made it to the final round- I can only say that the massive Japanese financial and corporate 'support' of the Chopin Competition (just look at the number of official Japanese sponsors of the competition) forced the judges to award her extremely generous marks.
As they say, money talks.
However, without real talent, there is only so far one can go.

I truly feel sorry for the young pianist. She was definitely in a rush and made a considerable amount of critical mistakes. But I feel more sorry for the detestable Korean nationalistic comments comparing her play with Cho's. Be grown ups, lads.

演奏のとき、のめり込んでる時の口の形がのだめカンタービレの、のだめに似てる。1:44この口とか似てる。
This is definitely not Aimi’s best. I loved her Etude op. 10. No. 4 and Ballade No. 1, but this sounds rushed.

actually no...she missed a few beats of clarity early on....having watched SJC's Extremely clear and perfect performance, this one went down the drain....sorry, Aimi....keep trying next time. Maybe next time. SJC killed everyone else's performances....too muddy on some phrases....I can hear literally EVERY note/phrase from SJC's performance....and rushed ALL of the transitional chords....whereas he smoothly built on them....

비전공자들은 에이미 연주 좋다고 하던 뭐라고 하던 짜피 가볍게 클래식 듣고 하는 사람들이니까 빠르고 파워 좋으면 그만일지는 모르겠지만, 전공으로 좀 깊게 파고들어간 사람들이면 이 연주가 전체적으로 어떻게 되었는지 객관적으로 판단할 귀는 있을거임. 오히려 전공하는 사람들은 ‘연주자’ 끼리 실력 비교를 안하지ㅋㅋㅋ 그게 예의에 어긋나고 실례거든... 어짜피 이 정도 클래스의 콩쿨 나올 정도면 세계에서 내로라 하는 사람들 다 모였는데 실력 비교를 할 짬이 아니라는건 음악전공이면 다 알거임ㅋㅋㅋㅋ 진짜 피아노 안치는 인간들이 연주자 끼리 비교질 하는게 더함..,,...

Interesting, in older videos she isn't as "polished" as she is here but she plays with more feeling and better dynamic. Here, it's like she's got it down perfect note-for-note but some of that feeling is gone, sounds a bit rushed.

She really killed the Maestoso dynamic and tempo marking by playing it this fast, I have no idea how she made it to the finals I don't think I'm a fan of any of her performances, all the other finalists were light years beyond her in my opinion.
