  • Every year in fall, my AC smells like a stinky sock when we turn the AC on between the heating cycles. Every year I open it up and it’s nice and clean but I run some hydrogen peroxide over everything and it seems to take care of the smell. Anybody have an idea what’s going on?

sir great video but dirty side of the coil is actually on the inside behind this galvanised triangle plate, almost impossible to clean. get non rinse nu calgon coil cleaner and use it spraying two cans on the coil next time. this way you will reach a lot more surface area of the coil

i def would invest in nice filter cabinet with 5 inch air filter merv 13-16 carbon, your 1" filter setup has atleats 5% air bypass around the filter, all thiss air bypass stays on the coil and when gets wet smells.

Why hydrogen peroxide and not vinegar?

Did you ever find a solution? I work for a large hvac company in san diego as a HVAC service technician..
Have you tried changing fan speeds?

Not yet. I’m actually wondering if I’m pulling in a type of dust or polin from outside. When I mowed up some leaves I smelt the exact same smell. This also might lift up with why I only get it during one time of year as well. Still trying to figure it out. I’ll keep fan speed in mind though thanks.

Look into extending fan run time in your thermostat after condenser stops running to allow coil to dry off condensation in the evaporator coil. Also install an IAQ device in the supply plenum. Also check to make sure pan drains completely with no water standing in it during AC off times and make sure primary drain line is cleared out. Annual Maintenance by a qualified ac service tech is recommended as well.

Use uv light up of the coil also try to buy an ionizer i wave r 4900 a bit expensive but it does great job 👍

1---First thing you do wear protective gloves and de-energize the furnace power for your safety and the furnace safety
check the coil if its dirty rinse it with 5 liter water and white vinegar 1liter or best thing clean it with spicial fluid that called sani c_n_d
Never use bleach this will mess up the coil
      2---Rinse the coil with water
Check the blower fan try to vacuum it to remove any dust and derbis
3---Check the drain pipe and flush it out check if its free no clogs or blockage put 1 litter of white vinegar on drain pipe to kill odors and bacteria
Last thing energize the furnace and set it to fan mode only from your thermostat
Make sure your air filter is new at least merv 8 or 10
My furnace air filter is permanent life time merv 10 so I always clean it outside the brand name k&n air filters they made a great filters
This steps will improve your air quality

IV light will not get rid of the smell. You need an Air Scrubber that ionizes the air. There are also ozone free air scrubbers that are good for those who have sensitive allergies because continuous ozone will make the allergies worse.

Quick fix is buy what’s called Dirty Socks spray cleaner for your evaporator coil. There are better options that will eventually fix the issue but I’d say call a professional. As a hvac service tech I see to many people try and fix stuff themselves but eventually they call us in the long run. If you’re not a qualified technician any damage you do to the equipment voids any warranty. Better off just getting a professional to maintenance the system.
