Celeste combines artistic storytelling with fluid controls, mixed with well designed levels for challenges to create, an absolute gem of a game. If the charm in the look and the platforming difficulty wasn't enough, the Celeste game tackles issues of anxiety and mental health. Madeline goes through so much on her journey and we grow with her, learning along the way to deal and overcome. There's going to be a lot to complete, such as the Celeste B Side, C side, strawberries, and then the golden strawberries. But like Madeline, it can be done with one step at a time.

I loved this but gotta say I understand you are the completionist but that's the thing it says they are for fun and if it's ever too much u can just not do it. A challenge is fun but just enjoy it and let it help not frustrate you

Wow! I felt incredibly proud that I completed the story without assists. No chance I could do B-sides, C-sides and all the strawberries!
@@matheuscabral9618 I know it may seem that way, but I remember when I first started out, every level was an ordeal, taking me hours to complete each one. Now that I’ve finished Chapter 8 and started the B-Sides, the A-Sides seem super easy and I can finish some of them in 15 minutes.
But it wasn’t always that way. They used to be hard. But I’ve gotten better at the game.
@@matheuscabral9618 *pats on the head* yes you’re a cool, big gamer boy. Now go away
What a great video. Perfect balance of humor and intelligent discussion of the game with thoughtful tangents on a sensitive subject. Nicely done!

Oh THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS GAME. I love this game, the message, the gameplay, the design, everything. Thank you sooooo much!
Man you are a great human being im happy to get to watch you every video
fun fact: the devs dont even have all the golden strawberries, and even actively discourages people from getting all of them
This is one of those channel where I watch every time one of your videos pops into my recommendations even if it’s one I’ve watched like 5 times already like this one. It has this quality where I don’t remember them all quite well enough to feel like there’s no need to watch it again, but I do remember just well enough to know it’s a great video that I should watch again.
Wow, why the updated thumbnail? (I do love it though)
i partially agree that before the dlc came out that the golden stawberries are a massive jump in difficulty, but with chapter 9 and its own extra strawberries, like the moon berries, and the extra no dash one for chapter 1 balances it out and decreases the difficulty gap drastically.
I think this might be my favorite episode yet. You’re amazing and this video is so important. Thank you.
I am so excited you did Celeste. I'd been waiting for this game. It's such a strong game in both design and theme.
I hope indieland goes well :)
The music for this game is also wonderful.
Such insightful commentary at the end. Thanks for providing great content! We all have our own mountain, eh?
The golden strawberries are the ultimate representation of the games ethos. As much as they could be in a medium such as video games which cant just turn themselves off and self delete. Imagin being in that scenario where one slip up and you die. Thats terrifying. Life is not hard in just the right ways, it sucks, but we can always push forward if we have the people by our side.
Also the game does tell you that the golden strawberries a step above and beyond the other extra challenges so theres that to take in too
"Asking players to do long levels like summit is too much to ask"
*player 9 has joined the server*
Been watching a TV show so I've been putting off this episode....Worth the wait, great episode. Great choice of game, not just for the game but the message in the game too and you guys handled tackling that message really well.
I think the best part of Celeste is that the game is only as hard as you allow it to be. If you allow yourself to face a difficult challenge then there's something waiting for you.
I was only able to get though the B-Sides and half of Chapter 9 before I used assist. And even though it felt like I was taking the easy route, I'm happy I was able to at least get as far as I could.
Honestly, its amazing how this game makes you overcome yourself.

Jerard, thank you so much for reviewing this game. It’s one of my favorite games of all time, and I ironically enough, I found this video by searching for Celeste video and saw this not long after it was uploaded. Big fan of your stuff dude. Keep up the good work.

The golden strawberries gave me a few mental breakdowns. But getting them all in the end made me feel incredible accomplished.
You know, they're making a free dlc to this game in the near future... right?

@@ihavenocluehowtochangethen2987 FAREWELL TO SANITY
Thanks, truly. I will climb my mountain, and I will try to complete as much as I can a long the way. Thanks.
I love the new thumbnail! It’s great you guys still care about your older videos.
I’m currently doing the B-sides, after getting all the strawberries and crystal hearts from the first levels. Hearing about the golden strawberries is insane, but honestly, I can’t think of any other game I want to jam out on to perfection. Thanks for this video, this is my all-time favorite game :)
I've been rooting for you to play Celeste for over a year now and I am incredibly glad you did because it's such a fantastic peice of art for so many reasons. I am kind of sad you didn't waist just a month longer because Celeste is getting it's final content patch in the coming weeks and it promises to be both wonderful thoughtful and challenging
Huh...pretty odd timing considering the devs just need to finish porting the DLC to release it. Great video none the less :D
After seeing his death count, I can't help but be impressed with him. I love this game, and this is the first game I've seriously attempted to complete. I'm nowhere near as good at games at him, but hey, that's how it is. Right now, I'm at hotel C side (that first screen is terrifying), 142 strawberried, 38 hours, and 7425 deaths. I don't think I'll go too hard for the golden strawberries, but the c sides and the rest of the regular ones, eventually.
I'm so sorry to hear about your mother , stay strong
I very, very strongly disagree with your assessment of the Golden Strawberries, and honestly feel like you completely missed part of the game's ethos in your dogged pursuit of them.
In this video, you said that the main message of the game is to work toward your goal through 'trial and error' and than the Golden Strawberries are 'the peak of the mountain that is Celeste'. I think both of these statements are *close* to correct, but miss the mark slightly.
-
The actual 'peak of the mountain' is... well... the peak of the mountain. Chapter 7. "Summit".
The actual main message of the game is that you should work toward your goal and recognize that things you thought were impossible are actually within your reach (hence Chapter 7's main theme)... but also that you need to be able to recognize your limits and stop when it's too much for you and accept that part of yourself (hence Chapter 5's main theme). The coalescence and synthesis of these two - seemingly contradictory - messages is what Chapter 6 is all about. If what you took away from the game was just that you should always continue working toward your goal, then you only got half the message, and I can understand why you would find the Golden Strawberries to run in tension with that message.
-
But in reality, the Golden Strawberries (as well as all the regular strawberries) exist to reinforce the *other half* of the theme - that you need to know and decide for yourself when it's time to stop.
This is why the game has so many "endpoints".
Some people will decide they've had enough after beating Chapter 7.
Other people will decide to call it enough after Chapter 8.
Still others will go for all the red strawberries.
Some will stop after the B-Sides, and others will stop at the C-Sides.
A minority of players will decide they can still keep going all the way to 100% completion (in the context of Celeste, "100%" means all red strawberries and all Crystal Hearts - Golden's don't count toward 100% completion)
After 100% completion, if you *still* feel like you want to do more, then that's what Chapter 9 is for.
And after that, the moon berry exists.
All of these challenges exist for you to have satisfying endpoint to stop the game whenever you feel comfortable doing so. The Golden Strawberries only exist for if you *STILL* want to keep going after that. There's a reason that getting every Golden Strawberry is called "114% completion". It goes even beyond 100% completion. You've already completed the game before going for even the first Golden. By that point in the game, the game expects and trusts you to decide for yourself when you've had enough. If - after everything that came before that - you tortured yourself for the Golden Strawberries just to "complete" the game, then you missed a major part of the game's theme.
-
This part of the theme is exemplified by one of Granny's lines you showed in this video here:
At 20:35 in this video, right after you've completed the Chapter 7 C-Side, she says to you "Funny how we get attached to the struggle. Promise me that you'll take care of yourself, okay?"
She isn't talking to Madeline here. She's talking to you, the player.
No one tell him they added a moon level with a moon berry.
I love Celeste so much. Badeline is an actual title, though not said directly. I want to see more from this game. I recommend this game to basically everyone, even if they just play the story. I haven't gotten every Gold Strawberry, or the Gold Winged nightmare, but I believe I have overcome a huge barrier in doing everything but. And I'm fine with that.
14:20
"So they provide short little burst of intense frustration"
Hehehe HAHAHAH AAAAHHHHHHHHH
*Screaming after 10 hours of c side chapter 7*
I am very sorry for your loss. Be strong man.
I agree with 99% of what you said. The only thing I would say is up for discussion is the golden strawberries. I see the game as a growth process for her. She learns to deal with it in the first playthrough but grows and is able to deal with harder times in the b and c tracks. To me, the golden strawberries represent the pinnacle of life challenges. You only get that one shot to deal with it. Think of a death of family member or loved one. You only get that one chance but you have to grow to deal with it before that happens. Otherwise you live life after that frustrated and with regret, similar to the golden strawberries. Yes they are super frustrsting, but given the purpose of the rest of the story, I think thats the point.
I honestly appreciate indie games after a played A Hat In Time, they had a 5+ development cycle with a small team, then was in the shadow of Super Mario Odyssey
While I know your whole thing is 100% completion, it's worth noting that there are no steam achievements for golden strawberries, which I appreciate greatly. I've completed all of the game (A, B, C sides, Farewell & Moon Berry) multiple times, but I have no intention of getting more than a few golden strawberries. Those are only intended to be a way for people to show that they achieved something incredible - not for the standard player. And I really appreciate that they let me 100% the game without raking my knuckles along sandpaper.
I bought this on a ps4 sale two days ago and beat it in one sitting. It legitimately made me cry. I love it so much.
Did Pantheon of Hallownest in Hollow Knight with all bindings: "ye it was pretty challenging" but the gold strawberries almost broke Jirard. I guess every gamer is different as well
I'm so sorry your mother died from dementia I hope you raised enough money to help others that are going through dementia. Bless what you have been doing through the years
Thx
If I’m linking game design and mental health, then the golden strawbs represent the good parts of “bad” emotions.
Like, the entire game is about understanding fear, anxiety, hopelessness. You are interacting with the gold strawbs at the end, after all of the other challenges. You’ve essentially mastered the game. So the final challenge represents the other side.
The fear of an overwhelming challenge. The anticipation of a difficult section and knowing that, after all the other challenges, you look forward to that nervewrakingly anxiety of making that perfect cornerboost. Now, you are aiming for zero deaths, which would be nearly impossible at the beginning of your journey with this game, but now is an achievable goal. Something you can accomplish far beyond what you could have expected when you first booted up Celeste.
But, almost all of the challenge goals like core b side and the c sides are unnecessary to feel satisfied with the experience. You aren’t going to get directly given the story or motivations from the game. You won, you understood the lesson. But there is that table behind the game with a series of extra credit challenges. Things that refine your play, that pushes you beyond what the main game offered.
Often, in mental health services, eventually a person leaves the hospital, or stops seeing the therapist, someone finds their mental health in good shape and now get to live their lives. Now what? Well… you refine those skills you learned. You build up your resiliency more and more. You continue to grow down the path of mental health and personal betterment. To me, that’s what the gold strawbs are
Just beat this one! Sooooo good! And much props to the delicate and accurate way the game approached the complex and often misunderstood topic of mental health
As far as the Golden Strawberries go, I wouldn't write them off as impossible so quickly. I can't imagine getting all of them, but the earliest ones can't be that bad. I completely dismissed the idea of getting them when my friend first told me they existed, but then he suggested that I could at least get Chapter 1, and I should try it, I might be surprised. I died 5 times. Then I died once. Then I completed it with no deaths after only 3 attempts. I didn't get a golden strawberry. Because I did this before attempting 3B (it might've been after. It was somewhere around Chapter 3 or 4). It's not to say that I'm amazing at the game or anything. I've collected everything in the first 6 A sides, and completed the first 5 B sides. And I've died more times than Jirard did in his entire playthrough. It is to say that I've improved a ton in the week and a half I've had the game. I don't think anyone should force themselves to get the golden strawberries. I think everyone should replay a level from time to time, see how many deaths they end up with. You might be surprised how close you can get.
Badiline is madiline’s shadow and the acceptance is like persona 4
I’ve got just over 120 in Celeste and I still don’t have all the Golden strawberries. Chapter 3’s A side has been driving me up the wall and I fear Chapter 6’s B side golden. Huge props to you for completing it!
This game is one of the reasons why I think that in this series there should be seperate ratings for completion and 100%. Since achievements and golden strawberries for example are beyond 100% completion, simply from a 100% perspective this game totally deserves to be "completed".
“It’s hard to believe that it’s over, isn’t it? Funny how we get attached to the struggle. Promise me you’ll take care of yourself, okay?”
Anyone who’s 100%’ed the game knows that this is what Granny says in 7C, but it didn’t resonate with me until I goldened Farewell. After that 3-month-long grind this quote wrecked me and brought me to tears.
Mad props for getting the golden strawberries, man. I got through all C-sides, but the golden strawberries just go too far.
This video is so great, it makes me wanna go back and finish my playthrough of it with my broken controler lol! Keep up the good work guys!
U the man! Always look forward to your videos.
I love you for making this video also I respect you for getting all the berries so fast really impressive!
I’m going to watch the rest of the video once I’ve played through the game- I don’t want any more “spoilers”
Great video love this channel
did you beat it yet
This game is an all time great for doing my favorite 2 things in games: solid 2d platforming and a touching story.
This game is hard to play…sometimes it’s the story being painfully understandable, sometimes it’s the gameplay being too hard, but it always makes me understand the journey of perseverance and it pushes me to keep climbing.
It’s an all time great, for sure
Dementia really sucks man, I'm really sorry about your loss.
Madeline is officially trans now and that's amazing.
“It allows you to slow down time”
ZA WARUDO
The name Badeline is actually official, it's her internal name in the gamefiles! :D
Ain't no mountain high enough.
Ain't no valley low.
chapter 7 b side golden strawberry is one of the hardest things i have ever tried to beat in a video game.
I really don't see golden strawberries as a flaw. Unlike most other parts of the game, they feel like an extra bit of challenge if you wanna keep playing, but not a part of 100% completing the game. Especially because they're added on top of the 175, so I have 191/175, 16 extra, instead of 191/202, lacking 11.
Totally late to the party on viewing this, but thank you, Jirard. This was a game that meant a lot to me as I played through it, and on a day like today where the struggles felt numerous, it's nice to be reminded of something that brought me great accomplishment upon finishing with enough (for me) berries. If you ever need a simpler game that helps emphasizes teamwork and celebrating everyone's talents and contributions, may I suggest Thomas Was Alone.
Even though I’ve played this game for many hours, completed all B and C-Sides, and did multiple speedruns, I have *NEVER* got all golden strawberries yet. Let that speak for how difficult they really are. I dread to think about getting all of them. (Even though I plan to do it one day for full completion. The game’s just that good!)
I was doing the summit and just stopped having fun about half way up. I was getting really tired of dieing over and over again and the stress started to get to me. So what did I do? Screen shared my game and got in a voice call with some friends. We finished that game. Together
I wish there were more support options online for anxiety too
tbh they should add a "platinum berry," which you only get after completing the core C side or Farewell, whichever you finish last, without dying once
i have ben waiting so fucking long for this and my mom is right behind me as i right this
I see Celeste and Hollow Knight are two incredible games with one significant, but not critical, flaw between them that only seekers of great challenges will bump up against.
I like doing the Pantheon of Hallownest every so often. I have never beaten it.
Godamn your lucky you completed this before CH9 came out
I know this video is a year old but RIP to your mom, Jirard
This game seems well worth the wait for my physical copy
I wonder if Jirard knows that Celete's DLC is coming with 100+ levels
That was absolutely beautiful, especially the ending :')
I ordered a physical copy of Celeste from Limited Run games several months ago, still waiting for it to be shipped so I can play it....
All that and you haven't even gone over the sound track and the hidden lyrics in the mirror level. Love celeste its changed my life.
Celeste is one of those games that are more like an experience, like Mother 3
This actually made me well up. Well done, Jirard. Well done.
Should have given it a ''Finaplete it'' - Just pretend the golden strawberries aren't there and complete everything else.
Hello The Completionist Team! Just wanted to say that I love you and I respect you Jirard, for the fact that you seem to be a very modest guy (I really hope you are one), and that you have a wonderful team behined you. I enjoy your content so much, whoever does your monologue is a briliant person, props to him (can't say "her" since I'm not aware of a girl in your team, but if that's the case then HER). I thought I completed the game, but I didn't know there were *golden* strawberries.
Hopefully Limited Run Games will sent me my copy within the next 20 years.
kinda strange you didn't mention the music considering how fantastic it is

I think the golden strawberries represent the true fear of claiming the mountain. We might be able to respawn over and over but in real life Madeline only has one life and by completing these golden strawberries you can truly feel the anxiety Madeline is feeling as she climbs this mountain becouse one small slip up could mean the end for her.
I really like this take on them.
I think on top of that there is also something to be said about how truly hard life can be until you are willing to accept help from others.
Yeah that’s probably what it is but it’s still not very fun
Inb4 pllatinum strawberry reach celeste summit in one life from start to finish.
