I think the golden strawberries represent the true fear of claiming the mountain. We might be able to respawn over and over but in real life Madeline only has one life and by completing these golden strawberries you can truly feel the anxiety Madeline is feeling as she climbs this mountain becouse one small slip up could mean the end for her.

I just don't like that they count deaths on a level you've already beaten & don't at least make it a separate counter. It's really not rewarding when you try an optional challenge only to eventually quit for your own sanity because the challenge sucks but your death timer is permanently several hundred deaths higher on that level now, with nothing to show for it.

The Golden Strawberriest feel like they go completely against the spirit of the game... until you realize that the game is about knowing your limits. And I don't mean "can I do this" limits.
I mean "SHOULD I do this" limits. Knowing your emotional limits as well as you might know your physical limits.
You're right - nobody probably should do the Golden Strawberry challenge. It's a hard and thankless task with a superficial reward that you're only taking on out of some misguided sense of pride or obligation. So why include it?
Because if they didn't, it wouldn't be a *choice.*
What value is there in a choice that someone else makes for you? What limits are you forcing yourself to stop and check, what restraint are you showing, if there's no bad-but-tempting choice to restrain yourself from?
If something like the Golden Strawberry wasn't there to tempt you into throwing all those lessons away... does the game have any proof you value those lessons at all?

I think you've missed part of the lesson of the game if you think it's thrown out its core message with the golden strawberries. It isn't just teaching you patience or pushing through anxiety, it's teaching about coming to terms with that voice of anxiety and accepting it as a true part of yourself that is valuable. It's about learning to let go of goals that are too lofty and to be okay with, in fact, to expect a level of failure. Madeline doesn't overcome or destroy her shadow self in the third act, she integrates with it and realizes that she's able to make more progress when she accepts the idea of, the possibility of, and possibly even the inevitability of failure. That's what Celeste is about, and it would fail in teaching an even more important lesson than simple "patience" if it allowed the majority of completionist types to actually complete it. The point of the game is to teach you how to be okay with and satisfied with giving up at some point short of 100% completion. The game asks you to have an honest dialogue with the part of yourself that thinks you're utterly invincible and to accept that you have limits. THAT's a deep lesson; and it's an especially important one for the types of people who are drawn to this sort of challenging game.

Your experience with the Golden Strawberries almost reminds me of "perfectionism". Perhaps, in game, it's do-able, but at what cost? Perhaps knowing that progress will most likely be "flawed", learning to accept one's "failures", and maybe even embracing them as learning opportunities along the way, is ultimately more rewarding and genuinely fulfilling in the end.

Man, it's been a while since I played Celeste and I almost forgot how much I loved it. Until the first notes of the soundtrack started playing in this video ❤ Took me right back. Such a special game.
Edit: While I totally get your frustration about the golden strawberries (I don't think I'm even going to ever seriously attempt them, I haven't even unlocked the C-Sides yet), you gotta keep in mind that you're pretty much the only person in the world who is literally forced to complete games 100% ;) I think that sometimes gets a little lost in your reviews. For normal people, the golden strawberries are just a really difficult, optional challenge for the most hardcore of gamers. So I don't think it's a big deal if they somewhat go against the game's design philosophy. The game's story is long over at this point and it's really just the most difficult thing that you could put in the game, so they did it.

I love Celeste and I'm grateful for the lessons it has taught me about other people's mental health (mainly cause I haven't had much trouble with it till recently) and I see myself alot in Theo's role, a person to lend a hand and comfort someone. But as I see it I'm like a cozy campfire that smoulders in the dark offering relaxation to friends and family. Though one friend thought I would be able to solve all his problems so like he was dumping water on the campfire he kept pouring his problems on me and suffocating me in his mental health using my good nature as ammo if I raised concerns... (Mind you I was thirteen and all I could do was play games, encourage him, and offer advice. But I was no therapist) It eventually it got to the point where to escape I had to burn the tie of our friendship and because of this I'm now dealing with a new problem. My own mental health as I feel that my own family/friends are going to use and/or manipulate me to doing what they want. If you think your friends can be the people that you can dump your mental health onto. stop seek therapy please.

Here’s something I was taught when dealing with my Anxiety and Depression. Everyone has it.
Those with Anxiety and Depression disorders simply don’t have the tools (whether through chemical imbalances in the brain, or a lack of yet-to-be-learned coping mechanisms) to deal with those perfectly human experiences.
The acknowledging of these problems as UNIVERSAL does not diminish or take away from the severity to which they can be experienced as an individual.
But it IS supposed to let you know you are not alone.
If your mind is telling you that you are alone and hopeless, that is Satan. Whether you believe that’s Satan figuratively or literally (let’s just think of it as a force for evil). It’s not good. Fight it.
Fighting is hard, but it’s an enemy worth having. Beat that bastard.

I think he means as in the gameplay helping you experience the story as in, you failing to complete a level failing to convey a story, but i still disagree with him, one example i really like is "what remains of edith finch"
BTW: i wasn't saying the previously given examples don't fit, i know very little about okami and bioshock has always felt more separated between gameplay and story even with the moral choices and all
EDIT 2: he also says the story wouldn't work without the gameplay, and he's right, the story is pretty plain at surface value and wouldn't work that greatly on a book or film, its the kind of story that's meant to be a game, whereas, while bioshock's gameplay enhances the story, the story could probably be told in a myriad of other mediums

But like you have said, it is best to have a network of friends to help support you along with places you could use to support the need to talk to someone. When my wife had lost contact with the last of her family, she was withdrawn into herself which has taken its toll on her. The good thing is that with my family, she is slowly breaking away from the negativity that she always had growing up. It will be a long journey for us but this video made me appreciate her all the more and what she is going through. So, thank you Jirard.

    • @Ruminations09
      @Ruminations09 3 роки тому +7

Wavedashing isn't a new mechanic, just like how wall bouncing in 7B and hyperdashing in 8C weren't new mechanics either.
There are only three mechanics in the game - jumping, dashing, and climbing. The new tricks you're taught later - including wavedashing - are just about learning how to combine these mechanics in new ways.
Fundamentally, a wavedash is not a new mechanic. It's the natural result of dashing into the ground and then immediately jumping. You, as the player, just never thought to use those mechanics you already knew in that specific way.

Fun fact: the song that starts at 7:34 has three instruments playing in it that all represent characters in the game.
    Guitar: Theo
    Piano: Madeline
    Synth: "Badeline"
