Perch are a great fish to introduce people to the sport of ice fishing. They are so much fun to catch.
But if you haven't spent the time (just like anything else) to figure out the setup it can actually be a real setup for failure, or a the very least a frustrating time on the ice. Which is no fun for anyone.
Roger and Lydia take us through the process they use to target perch with a tip-up. Not just the little guys, but the big slobs too!
Everything from, Line, Sinkers, Depth, Hook setting, and more!
Links to what we use in these setups are below.
Thank you for watching!

haha, your daughter had me rolling while you were explaining things in the beginning. Great tips, brother. Love seeing your kids with you in your videos.
Thanks 👍 yep Lydia is a goofball
Great stuff! I've seen you set tipups many times but didn't really know exactly how, haha.
Glad you liked it! more to come
Roger, you must have read my mind. Tutorials on how you get it done are what I need. Most importantly is finding the fish though, that’s my biggest trouble. Do you use electronics to find them, or a large tip up spread to zone in? On the lake I fish, it’s mostly mud flats between 25 and 30 feet that I find them, but it’s mostly luck and I don’t find them often. But I haven’t explored the different terrain like weed beds, or figured out where they are at different times of the season. I consider myself still very green in my perch knowledge. Thanks for all your help!
Great questions!!!!! I will make a how to locate perch!! maybe i'll record it tomorow
Right On, Yellow Perch is the deal🤠🐟
Yes! its my favorite fish! thanks for watching.
Hahaha ! Oh man Roger, sorry I missed the premier. The last 2 Missouri videos are already scheduled in UA-cam and will post each of the next couple of Mondays @ 5:00 AM. Great tips on tip ups. I will be anxiously waiting for my invitation once you’ve got good ice .
All right Can't wait! I'll be sure to call as soon as we get some action.
Yeah buddy…. Can’t wait.
thanks Don! we have some ice!!!!! i may go out on a pond next week! But you are not invited anywhere, until you have posted the rest of the Missouri trip...THe suspense is killing me!!
Looks fun! Glad to see the kiddos are included with your adventures.. memories for life! We're still waiting for ice here in Montana.. set record warm days in November and now December..kinda scary..I'm itching to get on the hard water..been watching Canadian boys to ease my fix..u shud make a video on them hog Brookies you guys got..man those things are massive..can you use live minnows on them?
we had a Hot November too, but the last week has been in the teens, so we have some ice on the smaller waters. not really safe yet, but there is hope! most of our brooktrout waters are closed to ice fishing and minnows are prohibited. but there are a few ponds when we can fish 'em. and they bite pretty easy through the ice. even with artificial baits. micro plastic jigs and small Swedish pimples.
Lotta good info in here... Is this new ice? Or last years?
its last year's ice, but we got some ice on small ponds already!
@@RogersRigs Coolio! Awaiting new vids!
yep we are starting up production again. i think we will go weekly till spring from here on in
@@RogersRigs Cool! Do that depth/fish finder explainer!🐟🦅
oh yeas i gotta do that! just pulled out my vexilar and it needs a tune up before it can go on youtube agian. i may just whack it real hard and see if that does it
Makes me excited for some ice fishing! Actually had some Lake George perch from last year for dinner... Going to need to restock soon. 😀 Great job on the video!
yep, we ran out of perch a few weeks ago. gonna go out on the row boat next week. and maybe on a small pond. have you considered perch for your bass/sunfish pond?
@@RogersRigs actually I would love to stock it with perch. Any ideas where I could purchas them?
there is a private hatchery out by Binghamton. they specialize in Walleye. it really depends on how dominant the bass are. they may eat all newcomers
Got a deer roger, finally.
Oh boy! that is great! e mail me pics! i just got done with a 2 day butcher fest. we went out to my wife's parents farm Near Buffalo NY. the deer breed like rabbits out there!
@@RogersRigs and they’re big out there! I missed one in Rochester that would have been a beast for even Ohio’s standards.
yep justin, they eat a lot of corn and soybeans out in WNY. in the ADKS its acorns and pine needles.
Roger, what size tungsten beads are you using and what are you pegging them with? seems like a piece of silicon .
i think these were 5mm beads. there is a link to 'em in the vid. and i used a sheers to cut strips of inertube rubber to use as a peg. but there are lots of options there.
From Minnesota, I love your videos
THANK YOU MARK! do you have good ice yer in Minnesota? we are just getting some here. i may go out this week on a small safe pond.
Roger is the man!
thanks for watching!
Ice already?! Still in deer mode here in the Finger Lakes. Usually in the boat after deer season for at least a few weeks. When I was a younger buck, the Lund ran Seneca all winter long. Some awesome days; lots of big perch and the best part, no jet skis! Thanks for your videos, my friend. You and your outdoor family are an inspiration.
we gush finished up with the deer season. it was a slow start. but we filled 4 tags in 3 days last week. today i am grinding up 100 lbs of burger. everything else is packed and in the freezer. next week we are going out in the rowboat. Did you catch those Monster elephant perch of Seneca? I lover winter boating. it is so quiet and the fishing is usualy good, as long as there is no wind. Thanks for watching!!
Yes sir. Seneca and Keuka provide some of the biggest perch you'll ever see. Seneca has slipped a bit in the past few years but the diehards still find them. Keuka is my personal favorite. Look forward to your videos. Always something special. Oh! And congratulations on a successful deer season!
@@mtmarcy4495 a few years ago when Seneca froze well. a guy told be he was sight fishing for 18" perch through the ice in March.. said he snapped off on some near 20" is that a possible thing?
@@RogersRigs Roger, I've seen some real tanks at derby weigh-ins. 20 is a stretch but possible I suppose. My PB was a speck over 17". That fish actually came out of Keuka. Honestly, these days, those girls get a pass. I feel better keeping males and smaller females. A 2 1/2 lb. stripe probably has a pound of eggs. That's a lot of future fillets!
@@mtmarcy4495 I AGREE! targeting the big ones for food is silly. the smaller males fry up even more crispy and it lets the genetics of those ole hens keep going. i aged a 14" perch at 13 years old. that takes a while!!!
