My daughter gave me a vintage 8R for Christmas. (She knows I love old stoves) It has good company with my Svea 123, Optimus 111, Optimus 80 and Primus 71L. It's easy to get carried away with the old stoves!

I bought one of these when I was 16 years old which was 52 years ago. And I paid 19 dollars for it.
I also mounted a lantern striker on it to light it with. I also have the pump and pump cap for it.

So here it is four years later and I picked up one of these today! Funny thing about your videos. They are four times as long as some of the others but they are 10 times more enjoyable and informative. I was really happy when I looked up the Optimus 8R and you had a video for it. The one I purchased today is a little earlier model with the Bakelite knob. Great video and thanks again!

Very well done , over the passed 55-56 years it's been one of my favorite mtn stoves , mine has never failed not one time to work ..Wind , rain , snow cold it does take a little longer to preheat ..
Just a great stove and it changed my adventures into the mtns in the late 1950's and 1960's ..
First off i thought there had to be a better way than building a fire for all my needs which was difficult in the Alpine country (packing firewood ) so i looked into the idea of a mtn stove and my first was the famous Svea 123 and several months later the Optimus 8R.. thanks great to see that once again..

Great little stoves. I inherited my Dad's years ago and just bought another on ebay for under $50...a little rough but I'm cleaning it up. I used Dad's several years ago to make a hot meal on the tailgate after a dear hunt. Worked great.

Great video! I backpacked with an 8R throughout my teen years in the 70s and loved it, but in my foolish youth I let it go. Recently I found a 123R, which is also great but has always seemed a little more fussy than the 8R. I mentioned to my husband that I regretted letting the 8R go and this Christmas there was a refurbished 8R under the tree! Your video was a great refresher and that roar always takes me back. Thank you!

This is one of my very best stoves too that i bought many years ago. I used it for motorcycle camping at the Isle of Man TT races. The beauty is I disconnect the fuel pipe from the motorcycle to fill the stove up so no need to carry a separate fuel bottle. The thing I like most about it is the roar it makes. Thanks for sharing

I mean...these antique stoves ..were not used much... All the time on a shelf... But i used 4 burners in about 20 years...49 days off a year, and then a lot of weekends...

Nice job. Great little classic stove. Durable, dependable, simple, and wonderfully engineered. Lots of ways to operate these things. Right on the money with opening the cap. You can skip the straw several ways. I like using a little nasal spray bottle of alcohol for priming to keep it clean. But if you use the stove fuel, open and close the cap, if it's hot out, the the sun alone will get the fuel flowing in just seconds. You can press your warm hands on the tank or simply tilt it if it's full with the cap loose and with the burner slightly lower the the fuel level and open the valve to fill the priming cup. I like to raise the heat shield during priming and initial running to heat the tank up to get it to full blast significantly quicker. In severe cold, I slosh a bit of fuel out of the tank and light it. BE CAREFUL. Don't do this if you aren't absolutely certain you didn't get any fuel on your gloves or hands etc. The make a couple of tiny plunger pumps and a mating fuel cap to accept the pump to pressurize the tank and get things moving quicker. I can't say enough good things about these or the Svea 123, Primus71 Optimus 80, and 88 as well as the bigger 111 series.

I love these stoves so much that own 5 of these, and I have restored 5 of these, but it sounds to me that it is not roaring correctly, you should be getting a nice all round blue flame, then again the camera is quite a bit away from the stove, so it maybe that the sound is not picking it up, now i can hear it better now you bought the camera nearer.

    • @charlietango1635

The correct way is, fill the little primer bowl with meths, with the stove turned OFF, light the meths, then wait for the meths to burn away, repeat again, when this is about to go out just crack open the throttle valve a little bit and it should fire up, after a minute or two, open up the throttle a bit more, and it should roar.

How can you have a "cool" stove? 😂
I've owned one for many years, as these gasoline stoves are great at higher altitudes, such as on a mountain where propane stoves can be fairly useless. And, although they're relatively heavy to carry, they're better than propane stoves as you know exactly how much fuel you have remaining. They also work well in freezing temperatures.

My late Step Father had one lying about his garage for years and asked me if I wanted it ? I knew nothing about them but soon found a lot of info on the net and found out that they where very sought after.
As it hadnt been used for over twenty years I set about giving it a overhaul although it was in excellent condition , I found this article excellent ( classiccampstoves.com/threads/optimus-no-8r-first-steps-filler-cap-wick.92/ ) Like has already been said , yours doesn't sound like it is burning properly, it should have a real roar to it like a jet boil. I have only ever used unleaded fuel in mine, but when I was in France a few years ago , I found it a pig to get going on their fuel, as did a mate of mine on his MSR. An excellent camping stove and the Russian copies are also excellent, I also see that you can buy them again and they are pretty expensive to say the least, around £250 here in the UK.
