This was my first time surfing Chicama, and jeez, was it a fun time. The wave is super long, the water isn't (that) cold, the crowds are minimum, and I hope this video inspires you to come here one day too! Hope you enjoy the video, and please like and subscribe!! More videos coming soon...
hey mate what's the main surf seasion / month there?
Wow, with your digging lefts and travelability I'd be on my way to Skeleton Bay
Hi Dan, loving your videos, just to let you know the reason why homes are half finished in Peru buddy, it’s a tax thing, until a builder is fully completed, they don’t have to pay tax.
Stop being a groveler and get to surf when there's proper surf.
I have seen you surfing in chile, madeira and now chicama....and you never get a proper swell! As much as you research the place you are going to , please try sometimes to get there with a forecasted ground swell so you can show what the wave is like.
Eating burritos and tacos in peru....what about cheviche and causa,or tacu tacu and some chicha morada.
Nah,I am done with you
One last thing: what you went out surfing that first morning you got there is called the cape, and that is NOT the wave.
It is like surf info for beginners, you ve been arond the world, should try to do a better job by now 😢
Out of here,adios
I also stayed in the same exact room at La Ola Azul! I recognized that completely blue room immediately. Haha. Great video. The waves of dreams. Glad you got the chance to enjoy it.
I'm just finding these videos and I love the honest takes on all the places you travel. So many other videos try to hide any negatives, whether to try and sell you something or to attempt to be an influencer with a perfect life. I will definitely subscribe!
Hey Alex! Thanks so much and yes, that's my goal for all of these videos is to give a realistic view of the spots, positive and negative!!
I have been there 3 times, I'm from Spain and my wife is Peruvian. Two first times I scored hard, swell with 8 feet, and the wave was barreling in some sections, Mostly in front of Hotel El Hombre. I got to the pier a few times, and the ride was 1:30 or nearly 2 minutes. Then back walking 15 minutes (second time I paid some soles to a motocarro or tuc tuc, and the return was only 3 or 4 minutes).
I hated to walk so much, ended up with cramps in the legs.
Current very strong in the same direction you go riding the wave. It was so stronga that within 2 minutes you week 50 meters away from were you jumped to the water, so it is better to catch a wave soon or you'll be displaced.
The summary of rubbish everywhere , semi dessert and unfinished houses is 100% true.
Very nice and kind people and also kind of dangerous if you get to the wrong neighborhood or get on with the wrong people.
Wow! It must be so sick when it's 6-8ft! Would love to surf it like that... Yeah, getting to the pier is crazy longgg. But yes good shout on getting the lifts back around the point, I was defiantly tired and sore after 2 or 3 run-around laps, hahaha!
Interesting point about wrong neighbourhoods etc. It’s such a small place anyway. I walked around most places during the day and at night. Maybe I was just lucky.
would I be okay traveling and surfing Chicama by myself?
@@deannagould6208hi! Yes you would be ok, it just depends on what kind of accomodation you are staying, the locals would tell you what neighboors to stay away and public places people are kind and respectful
Is their weed available?
We just spend 5 nights at Puerto Malabrigo and had a similar sized swell hit during the last 2 days. Camped in our van for free right below the El Hombre Hostel. No one bothered us the entire time. Used the showers in town for 2 soles. It was totally worth it for me to hire a boat. It is now 75 soles or 20 USD for 3 hours. I actually really liked the chill and quiet vibes of the town. Definitely need cash before you get there as there are no ATMs for miles. You got some great looking rides. We also surfed Pacasmayo just before here. You passed it on your way down from Chiclayo. More powerful wave and the shape is almost as good with super long rides as well.
Great video Dan. And thanks! Surfing Chicama in January. Old surfer guy bringing his long board after not surfing for years. 😎
Thank you for this wonderful report, Dan!!! Chicama is very hard to get to. I was a teen in Lima when I first saw an 8mm film from there in '69. It was already legendary. The crew took turns driving the car back up the beach. Banditos were an issue back then... Gray skies, lefts and unfinished cinder block buildings were/are to be expected in Peru. "Hollow" is very rare in Peru❤
Wow! Sounds like it was wild back in the day! And I imagine pretty scary to visit... But yes awesome place, and really enjoying my time here in Peru!
@@DanHarmon123 pues
‘69. ? I thought I was old. ‘75 high school grad started surfing that summer SD.
to answer you question half built homes everywhere, people dont have to pay property tax when home is still under construction, so they act like they are still building in progress
Fck that’s awesome
The tax effect is only part of the reason. Also, the real estate market in some parts of Peru is not developed, so people in what we call "autoconstrucción", which means self construction. Since income is low, families usually don't have enough money to build their house in one stage, so they save enough to build one space, then they save some more and build another space. Many of these constructions do not have a roof yet because it is the most expensive part. Obviously, no architects involved.
I meant "people engage in autoconstrcción".
Yup it’s same in Colombia
I was there in the 80's surfing for 2 months, Good food at the Hombre hostal with his small rooms painting with chicama waves and very colorful, great food , very hot in summer but great surfing. Enjoy Peru has a lot of great waves to surfs . Go down south and you will find waves from 12' to 20' . Enjoy
Absolutely BOMBING!!! Keep these videos coming...it so awesome!!!!
Kia Ora, from New Zealand. Thanks for the informative video. Chicama is now in my bucket list! I’ll check your blog and may get in touch if you don’t mind. Cheers
Sounds good mate! Look forward to hearing from you!!
I'm checking your channel for several surf trips and decided to check Floripa since it's my home town. Everything is spot on. I would only be a bit more pessimistic about the crowd. I appreciate a lot how you only reveal info about the major spots! We need to deserve the discovering even if it means less information when we travel
Really enjoyed this vid. Been looking at this place for years in mags and online, I think your video here is the best breakdown of how it actually is there that I’ve seen. Good job😊🤙
Thanks so much!! Really hope it helps make your trip happen! Yew!
Surfed here a few times before the popularity hit ( Peruvian born and now living in OZ). Such a fun wave on the right board like a mid length or fish Unfortunately when there is a swell now the crowds of learners on boats are too much with a lot of disrespect. It would be great if the locals and tourists could agree on a better way of doing this service and not tear the wave apart with wake. To answer the question about the unfinished buildings, I believe its to do with tax. In Peru when you finish a construction you must pay tax to the government so therefore in rural areas no one completes buildings as to say its not finished yet.
Hey mate! Thanks for the info about the houses and yes, I think that was the only downside surfing here. So many waves got to waste by having boat wake through it!! Maybe a marker buoy for how far out boats need to go hahah?
Thanks!
Hey Tim!! Thank you so much for your contribution! That means so much to me and look forward to putting it toward more surf travel content! Yewww!
Great video. Thank you! Chicama has been on my short list for a long time. Got to pull the trigger!
Yeah pull the trigger for sure! Guaranteed leg burners!!
Nice vid! And great backgrounding info.
The building style you mentioned is very common in developing countries where local cash currency doesn’t always hold its value due to inflation pressure, and where storing your money in a bank is not a convenient or secure option (due to banks going bankrupt, lack of branches, undeclared cash earnings, legislative risks, government corruption etc). So “storing” your wealth in building materials is a safer way for it to hold value. When the building materials are stuck to the ground they are harder to steal and are a bit more weather protected. So you get these shell houses and a piece-meal architecture that gives you flexible building timeframes to add bits as soon as you have enough cash. A simple solution to a complex problem.
Hey Sam!! Ahhh ok, thanks for the info!! But yes, that makes perfect sense now! Never knew there was that much reason behind it! Thanks :)
Como un lugar que conocí en el Reino Unido: Grimsby. Dios mío……
Keep pumping these video's and believe.
Thank You, Jonathan! I will certainly keep making as many as I can!
Thanks
Hey Andrew! Thank you so much! Stoked you found the video helpful :)
Thanks very much for taking the time to make this, super helpful mate!
No problem! Hope you score the place!!
Cool vid. Appreciate the detailed look at the setup: the town, the long trip to get there, the remoteness of (and long walk to) the point. No wonder there's no crowd; not a place you just rock up to in your rental.
I mind-surfed the hell out of those waves. Lovely stuff. Great videos.
Thanks mate!! Hope ya can get there one day :)
Lucky! Thanks for the video; it's really enjoyable to watch.🙂
Thanks a lot Dan! Good ripping!🤙🏼 Heading there in 2 weeks stoked to see how 'raw' the place is (apart from the rubbish)
Thanks, guys!! Epic, you'll have a wicked time!! Yep, not a beautiful spot but you might ride the longest wave of ya life!!
@@DanHarmon123 Hey Dan! Man o Man Chicama was a surreal wave we got lucky with a reasonable swell I didn't manage to ride a single wave for as long as you but man what a spot. I've never seen such clear lines like that. Insane spot. Im editing the video now hopefully you get a chance to check it out. Thanks anyways for your tips in your initial video 🤙🏼
such a sick video man keep up the vids they are amazing
Thanks so much!! Can't wait to keep making more :)
Ouiii super vidéo merci beaucoup pour tes commentaires
Wow. Thanks for this. Two thoughts: (1) The Walk Back sounds like a paycheck to me. Time to walk with and subsume the (2) profound experience of getting rides like that. I’ve had 10 second rides. The Footage: to be on the wave and watch it forming and reforming as well as your increasingly bobbing head toward the end at 1:13 was a Spiritual Experience. I’m grateful to have seen it. Muchas Gracias, Hermano.
About the unfinished buildings, it happens by 2 factors:
1) the main one is money, people usually don't spend full money to finish their houses. At least they don't worry about the small details, like painting what is not necessary. If you can 'live' there, that's enough and they won't invest more money in it. You can see the difference in what is considered 'liveable' in different countries. But that gives you perspective though, I bet when you were there, you saw people happy, with a smile on their faces, put you to think that even with that living conditions, people are able to be happy, makes you forget about the classic "first world problems".
2) About the rooftops, the average family builds their houses with the expectation that they will build more levels in the future, mainly to rent, sell, or leave space for their sons or daughters. That's why you will see unfinished rooftops.
This is actually a kinda cultural linked to economical factors. For years families lived in deprived conditions and young people still don't earn enough money to live independently, so they live with their parents and even construct their houses on top of their parent's houses.
In Peru there are 2 worlds, you won't see this in the most developed parts of the capital city and some other cities, but in the rest of the country, this is the rule, especially in small poor towns.
Cheers from a Peruvian!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Been dying to know what it was like to get there and what it's like to live there. We've all seen the waves in video but this was by far the best video on the spot. #bucketlist
Thank you!! Hope you get to surf it one day :)
best surf video ever...
I love to see this less crowded spots...
Great video🤙
Yes!! It's one of the few famous spots in the world that isn't too crowded!
@@DanHarmon123 Dreary, cold, and not much to do on land, so yeah....plus, I don't think I've ever seen a photo of Chicama with the sun out. I'll have to search for that. Thanks for the video, safe travels.
I was lucky and got there with a great swell hitting. Rides till your legs would give in. Enjoy the current try to get around old man and get a bike to get back to the point. Once in a lifetime experience.
Thank you Dan, very helpful. Just got back from lima but never got to make it to chicama.
Glad you found it helpful!! Hope you got some waves down in Lima!!
Was at Chicama a couple of weeks ago. The wave is beautiful and the desert backdrop is amazing. The thing about cash is true across Peru. At Puerto Malabrigo there are no cash points. There’s a bus from Puerto Malabrigo to Paijan. It costs 2 soles but when I went to Paijan to get cash the ATM there was not working either. It was a big problem.
Oh I know! The cash point situation is super annoying! I was too lazy to go to Paijan so only went to places that accepted card for two weeks haha!!
Sick video man, would love to see more surf travel vlogs from you, you rip 🤙
Thank you!! Gonna try my best to make as many as possible as I travel! Watch this space hahah!
I really enjoyed your video, hello from Spain😁
Hey Alexandre!! Stoked you enjoyed it :)
you were lucky, because chicama can sometimes be frustrating, you can get there and see no waves for days or even weeks (quality waves) and when there is a really big swell with a good direction for chicama there is a lot of people in the line up, you have to be lucky to get a really good wave, but at the end its a great place, very chill and you can get a wave or a ride that you will never forget
Hey Manuel! Yes I can see how it could be frustrating so must have been super lucky :)!
Thank you for this insight view of Chicama Dan! At what time of the year have you been there? - please keep on doing these videos, much love 🫶🏻
Loved your vlog. Very informative and thanks for sharing the stoke
Glad you enjoyed it! Yew!
Awesome Vid Dan! looking forward to more
Thanks Sean! Can't wait to keep creating surf/travel content!
@@DanHarmon123 When will you arrive in Brazil or Argentina? Good waves there
Hey Dan! Great video! Of course the shots of the wave are awesome! Can't wait to surf that wave! Thanks for the travel tips and insight. Also, dig the shots of the towns, houses and scenery. Do you happen to have a video of what Northern Peru is like? Just wondering how that area looks, as well. Thanks again for the videos. Keep Living The Dream! 🤙
Hello! Yeah, it's such a fun, easy-to-surf wave; I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! I don't have too much footage of northern Peru... but I'm going to release some B-sides (extra footage) of me traveling around Peru soon, which might provide some insight into what it's like. (Should be uploading in next couple of weeks). YEW!!
I really enjoyed Chicama..i stayed at Cosimals place,on the beach ,near the jetty.Great food and rooms.I rented a board and wettie from Jesus,he was a nice bloke and he had a good selection of boards.I love 🇵🇪 Peru.I first surfed Uluwatu at 16 and now at 65 first surf at Chicama..😊
Ahhh yeah sick!! Haven't heard of that place but yeah Peru has so much to offer, not just waves but some other sick stuff to do as well! Sick, ticking off the famous waves of the world!!
Did that same exact bus ride dope vid man keep it up bruv
Thanks mate! Yeah its definitely a journey hahha!!
You should do Pavones CR next. Great Video!
Yes!! Pavones is on the list for sure. Thanks, and glad you enjoyed it :)
I was in Peru not too long ago and a local told me that they don't have to pay property tax if the building is still "in construction" so a lot of the buildings are left as if another level is going to be built above. Not sure how true this is. I didn't make it to Chicama but I loved the surf around Lima.
Hey mate!! Yeah I've since learned this also. I went to Bolivia shortly afterward and they had the same thing there hahah! Sick, did you surf those rock jetties in Miraflores??
Reminds me of that Endless Summer movie. Forgot where spot was at. But using long board wave was so long, he had to stop cause he was so tired of the ride, - wow.
Hey Max, yeah I definitely had a few of those rides out here haha...
I like the wave timer, cool
nice video, thx for all the travel tips!
My pleasure! Glad you enjoyed :)
Thanks for the details, very helpful for planning a trip there. By the way, I think the incomplete building has to do with incoming funds. I know my own relatives in Brazil, sometimes it takes years to complete building parts of their house because they are slowly saving to complete certain part of their project.
Thanks for the info! Super helpful! Hope you enjoy your trip there!!
When I visited Peru the locals told me it has to do with taxation. If the building isn't finished the government can't tax the dwelling. Not sure if thats true though.
That is the reason: low imcomes. People build their homes in stages. It is called "autoconstrucción". Roofs are the most expensive part, so they have to save more to finish the home properly.
brilliant Dan
Trew Gear Nuyarn Pocket T! Stellar outfit.
Nice video hopefully taking a trip there in the future👏👏👏
Have fun! Would highly recommend :)
Great vid Dan! Liked and subscribed! 🤙🏻
Awesome thank you!

¡Gracias, Carlita! Definitivamente volveré algún día :)
Mate did you surf Mancora up North? Surfed there in 2010, warm and boardshorts all year round, loved that place 🤙🏄🌊🌅🐬🌴
Yeah I did but Mancora was flat unfortunately... So I bombed it down to Lobitos, that was sick though!!
Oh yeah sweet, yeah I heard it cranks down there at Lobitos! 🤙
Awesome Dan!!
Chicama.
hell yeah !

epic wave bro great video
Glad you enjoyed!! Thank you :)
Was sick man congrats
damn looks amazing... Always wondered how good it really was... Rad you just went solo!
Love travelling solo!!
Chicama
Hell yeah!
Congratulations mister surf forever.
Thanks for this!
My pleasure!
Chicama is incredible but Pacasmayo El Faro is more constant and twice the size, and the wave is very, very long.
My longest ride ever was 1min and 42 sec but that was at a secret spot somewhere in the south Pacific
one wave and then, "ok this was fun, now lets get the fuck out of here "
great video. Nice Job!
I’ve never been but have surfed some insanely long lefts in chile
Sick! I'm actually in Chile now and yes, there's certainly some long lefts down here too, but a whole lot colder thats for sure hahah!
@@DanHarmon123 going to pichilemu?
Just a guess but perhaps they get taxed on a building when it is completed SO they give the impression there is work left to be done so they don't ever have to pay?
Yeah ok, that makes sense and i have heard that happens in Bolivia! Sam gave a great answer as to why above!!
As far as i know, In Peru If the building is unfinished, you don't have to pay the tax.
Thanks Dan! You’re vlog was the most informative and useful regarding traveling and surfing( The Title kinda makes me think its only about surfing so I didn’t check this out til later)…Is your board an RNF 96?
Thanks mate!! That's wicked to hear you found it so helpful! And i was riding a Mayhem Sub-driver in this video!!
nice one, you didnt mention the period you were there ? could you tell us please ? thx and enjoy the waves, cheers
Hi mate! Yes, this was in August!!
What a Wave.
Aloha, what month are you there? What are the best months to serve in Peru? Thanks bro.
I want to be there for that same majicseaweed forcast, thanks, super part of the vid
brilliant dan😀
Excellent video ... did you hear from any of the locals what Chicama was like when the Code Red 2 swell hit starting around July 18th?
No I didn't but I can have a pretty good guess that it was absolutely firing, breaking all the way to the pier!!
Hey Dan @DanHarmon123! I am from Peru and already subscribed to your channel. I have surfed many times Chicama throughout my life (45 years surfing!) and once there was a solid 8 ft swell hitting Chicama and I managed to pass from "The Cape" (further away point) to "The Point" (the one you can see from town) and finished at "El Hombre" section. Legs destroyed. In normal conditions, you cannot connect with a single wave from Cape to Point. One thing I noticed in your video is that it was quite sky was every day greyish... you had bad luck. Chicama normally has sunshine every day, the water turns greenish blue, and stronger side-offshore wind shapes the wave even better holding the lip from braking, which means more time to play with maneuvers.
Hi! Did you rent that little boat for your surf sessions? Or you just paddled your way in
I didn't! I just paddled/did run arounds but there was plenty of people getting boats!
Bro thank you for being honest... I'm looking for place to stay 6 month, must be very cheap and secure where I can start surfing... May I ask you to share some good places with me...
The main reason buildings are half finished is that you pay taxes on it ONLY WHEN THE HOUSE IS FINSHED! that is why they build one extra story to the house knowing they will never put a roof on in, tax loophole that every one uses
I've surfed it twice for 3 months each time, it is the same offshore wind always, strongest middle of the day. I've never seen it unsurfable the wave is exactly the same everyday...might be knee high or double overhead but always breaking!
go to Trujillo & hunchaco for other good waves & party vides in summer. food is amazing, people are friendly & everything is super cheap, well worth it. can't wait to go back.
Sick! Thanks for the info... But yeah I found it was the same wave no matter what size hahah... so much fun! Yeah I skipped those places but will check them out next time for sure!
The lack of finishing is because of the building taxes. A completed building (with a roof) is subject to building tax. People can't even afford nutrient-dense food or have running water, let alone afford to pay taxes.
Cool..
Yew! Thanks!
Dan, you cant be too careful, but did anyone offer you “Periko” its a special white powder of some sort. Never tried it myself. Just wondering………….
Looks like heaven! What month/time of year was this? Also do they rent out wetsuits in the town?
Hi Lauren! Yes, this was during August (2022) and yes there are some surf schools and camps with equipment so i'm sure you can!!
Amazing 🤩
Where is the link to the music? Great remix of Feel It Still by Portugal the Man
thank for you information and real place chicama long wave is really or not...
Glad you enjoyed it!! And yes, superrrrr longgggg!!
Ok. My question is many gopro surfers should once and awhile show other surfers from the beach perspective. I don’t want to see your perspective constantly. Anyhow that’s what I would do. IMHO.
Hey Bobby! Yep, you're right, I don't want to constantly see POV footage of myself either hahah. However I travel full time on a budget alone, so hiring a videographer isn't an option for me just yet, otherwise definitely!! Hopefully in the future....
Where’s your video of your Andes trip?
the impossible current seems to go hand in hand with these extended point breaks. Immousuane in Morocco is like that.
Awesome videos! How long did you stay?
Hey Rudy! Yeah I stayed for around 2 weeks i think! I extended because a good swell came when I was about to leave!!
What’s the problem with a bleak landscape. Looks so beautiful
Hahah, yeah it's unique that's for sure!!
If the building is fully done, they willhave to pay taxes, thats what those are almost done. In most rural places in Perú buildings are painted on the front side only
Ahhh ok!! Yeah a few people have said this now actually! Thanks for the info :))
Awesome
..not finishing a building is for tax purposes..if it looks like your are "constructing" (ie another floor going up - rebar sticking up) then you avoid taxes and fees on the new construction. Something like that. Cool video. What was the water temp?
Yes makes sense now!! I'm in Bolivia now and it's the same thing here. Water temp was around 17 degrees celsius i think, so was ok in a 3/2mm!!
@@DanHarmon123 I see it in Mexico (tip of Baja), too. Appreciate your reply.. Enjoy!
Thank you so much for your clip :-) I allways dream about the longest wave in world..chicama. Unfortanatly its seem not so easy to come there.. Whats about rent a car?
Much greetings from Annette/ Berlin Germany
Hello! Yes, renting a car would be a great option as well, from Trujillo! I was on more of a budget so I used the bus haha!
Hi Dan the man, what time of year were you there? 2 months a go so August?
Yes Adam! Mid August I was there, waves everyday!
Magnificent
Bravo for your video, you clearly came with your board, but I was wondering if it was possible to rent surfboards in town or if it is essential to come equipped. Thanks in advance for your answer
Yes you can!! There's a couple places to rent boards along the main road infront of the beach :)
I don't know if it's true, but when I went to Peru a taxi driver told me that people didn't finish construction because there was some tax discount if their house was under construction. (Something like that. But I don't know if it's true)
But I believed it, because really 90% of the country seems to be under construction!
