In this video I react to 2 songs by former Iron Maiden frontman, Paul Di'Anno.
This is my very first time discovering him and I was not disappointed. This guy is good. I really enjoyed the over all feel I got from listening to Older Maiden. There was a certain element in this area that I did not get from Bruce Dickenson's Maiden.

Remember Tomorrow is one of my all-time favourites. Paul was one hell of a singer, it's a shame drugs and health problems took a big toll on him and he never realized his full potential.

You should listen paul dianno battlezone albums also for begin that after maiden his vocal skill increased a lot compared to maiden.
Also he took the other route while developping many facetts = while maiden began operatic clean vocals and dilued harmonies Paul was heavier and heavier

Dude. "Running Free" and "Killers". Paul is criminally underated. Bruce is still the king, but that dirty punk like sound of those first 2 Maiden albums with Paul's voice tieing it together, they need more credit.

There were a lot great NWOBH bands at that time and I believe what made Maiden to stand out from the crowd was their raw in-your-face sound for which they needed Paul for the first two albums.
I think in 1980-82 Bruce's "Ian Gillan" style was not fresh enough to break through with Samson while Paul's raw and still melodic style was unique and brought attention to Maiden. And I think the same if we compare Clive and Niko :)

You nailed it! Paul Di'anno is soul. He's real emotion. Bruce is great, too. But Bruce is more of a performer. Paul Di'anno is the real deal. I love your point on Bruce teaching history, and you didn't learn shit from Paul... but you felt it. Paul Di'anno is something you live by. Bruce is something you learn by.... you can't beat feel. Paul and Dennis Stratton are two big reasons why the first two albums are so amazing and unique. Dennis was the "guitar boss" on those albums, he played on the first and did all pre-production on the second, which Adrian had to play like him. Without Dennis (and Paul), those albums could never be recreated...and they haven't come close. Maiden has created some awesome, amazing songs since the first two albums, but the first two albums are very special.

As much as I love Bruce Dickinson, I was blown away when I bought 'Killers' at the record store, mostly because of the cover, took it home and listened to it. There's no doubt that Bruce Dickinson (formerly of a band called 'Sampson') is a more polished showman and arguably has a technically better voice, but DiAnno has raw aggression and atmosphere. To me, it was a disappointment we didn't get another album from him. I'll always prefer, slightly, the Dianno years of Maiden

First of all, the new camera and mic are incredible! Love it!
Now, these songs feature Steve Harris and Dave Murray, the only two that have been there from the first. Dennis Straton was on guitar and Clive Burr on drums. This is the seminal Maiden. If you listen to songs like "Running Free" or "Murders in the Rue Morgue," you'll hear the punkiness in Paul's voice. While always rather progressive, the narrative seems to be that Harris wanted to continue in a straightforward metal vein. However, when Di'Anno was fired for drug use, Bruce Dickenson came on board, and his creative bent led them in a more theatrical direction. (Steve tried to strip back down to basics with "No Prayer for the Dying" after "Seventh Son," but it met with very mixed results. Among my own contemporaries, "No Prayer" was a bomb.)
I strongly suggest a few tracks from "Killers." In fact, "Killer" is a good song for that. You can feel how the addition of Adrian Smith evolved the band, and you can start to bridge the gap into "Number of the Beast."
You can also see some latter-day Paul Di'Anno stuff in a couple of his bands, "Battlezone" and "Praying Mantis." He has also released solo albums. (Can't tell you if they're good or bad; I was never interested.)

There's not a bad tune on either of the first two albums, just react to all of them,Lol.I love that people still love this music, and thanks a million for taking time and giving it some air.im just a bedroom guitarist, but clive burr(rip) in my opinion cannot be topped, there may be faster ,and more technical players, but no one can do what he did,the way he did it! Just my opinion.btw ,love the reactions, you rock🤘🤘

Remember Tomorrow was a rare example of Maiden actually miming to the studio version. This was just the outro to the broadcast, hence the messing about with small edits to make it fit and the early fade out. The full version's on the debut album. I would strongly recommend Phantom of the Opera as evidence that from the outset Steve Harris knew exactly what he wanted Maiden to sound like. It encapsulates everything that made early Maiden stand out from every other up and coming metal act at that time.

I think lunar eclipse got it right when he stated that Paul DiAnno was the kind of british punk band sound Maiden was shooting for in 1975-80, but by the early 80's they needed a singer that could catapult them to a worldwide audience. So when they opened up for a band called Sampson, they heard Bruce singing for them, & his operatic range. Well the rest is history.

Because of Bruce, Maiden were able to grow, creating different styles, lyrics, technics...different sounds and tempo...and still sounds typical Maiden like...all those years...you hear it and say..yeah, thats Maiden....because of the genious lyrics and sound of Mr.Steve Harris....and the colour of Bruce's amazing voice..

This was a privilege to watch brother. You can't imagine how much this mirrors my experience of Iron Maiden. The Paul DiAnno version of this band was largely a back catalogue experience for me. With the exception of a few tunes someone else's mix tape, it was all new to me pre-Number of the Beast. Don't get me wrong, I love Judas Priest but most bands were not given the time to evolve like they did. Maiden? Right out of the bloody box \m/

This song has an almost 70s Prog vibe to it. Paul DiAnno had some substance issues, which contributed to his leaving, and you can def see/hear it in his lyrics. I'm glad that he didn't end up like so many other folks with similar problems.

The drummer on the first 3 albums is Clive Burr, Number of the Beast was his last album before he had to quit because of MS. Then Nikko came in, Paul was on the First two albums before they stole Bruce Dickenson away from Samson. (Children of the Damned was his audition song) You know Steve already and the guitars are Dave Murray and Adrian Smith. Adrian left just before Bruce left and Adrian's replacement was Janik Gers. Bruce was replaced with Blaze Bailey. The 3'rd best singer of the 3. Then when they reunited we now have 3 quitarist. Killers was the best Iron maiden album for baselines. The first song I learned on bass was Wrathchild. The first song I taught myself to play was Murders in the Rue Morgue.

Paul Dianno was Awesome. the perfect singer for the first two albums, but I'd always go Bruce over Paul.
When bruce left Maiden he did two phenomenal Solo albums, Accident of birth and the majestic, and I mean epic "The Chemical wedding" Bruce's Solo albums blew Maidens Blaze era albums out of the water. Was so glad bruce rejoined MAIDEN. On a side note, Paul Dianno has had a hard knock life, great singers definitely a character.

In case it hasn’t been said in the comments yet... Dave Murray is the guitarist on the left. Adrian Smith is the guitarist on the right. Murray has been on all albums. Smith came in right after the debut was released and left in 1990 and was replaced by Janick Gers. Smith rejoined with Dickinson in 1999 and since then they’ve had 3 guitarists. The drummer on this video was Clive Burr. He was on the first 3 albums and left after The Number of the Beast. He was replaced by Nicko McBrain who has been the drummer ever since. I hope that helps.

This post is from memory. If I have a facts wrong please respectfully correct.
    Love the reaction.
Recommendation should have started with Prowler then either Remember Tomorrow or Strange World. But you definitely heard two great songs that are a different sound for Maiden. Prowler was their first song on their debut LP. You can even look up The Soundhouse Tapes which was their demo. Steve Harris handed a copy to Neal Kay of the Sound House and Band Wagon. Steve said something like, "Here mate. Give it a listen. If you like what you hear then give us a call. If not then no harm done." Neal put it in a pile thinking, "Yeah right." He did listen to it and immediately called Steve. When he played it the kids went bucking fonkers for it.
    1. Iron Maiden
    2. Invasion
    3. Prowler
Paul Di'Anno had a great voice, but he had substance abuse and personal problems. This led to the decision to replace him. Steve Harris and Rod Smallwood (Manager and the Sheriff of Huddersfield) met with Bruce Dickinson (at the time with Samson) and asked if he would be new lead singer. Bruce agreed, but they kept Paul on for a bit and then made the change. Bruce was under contract to Samson but allowed to leave and join Maiden. He wrote some songs but not allowed to get credit.
I go back to 1982 and first song I heard was Prowler. I bought Iron Maiden and Killers. Number of the Beast was out, so I bought it too. Listened to the first two and then I got a slap in the face. No Di'Anno. Instead there was this interloper who had replaced Paul. I'm like, "Who the bloody 'ell is this bloke? Where the heck is Paul. I like Paul. Oh, well. Let's give it a listen. I could understand the change as Bruce gave more mainstream appeal to the vocals. With Paul there has always been a bit of the roughness and a certain charm to the first two albums. No matter, you cannot go wrong with any Iron Maiden songs.
Speaking of Sheriff of Huddersfield, here is a link to this song about Rod Smallwood written by the band after Rod moved to California. This was never on an albums. It was a b-side to the single Wasted Years. ua-cam.com/video/TO5sCTn3bR4/v-deo.html
Rod was a huge influence and a major part of the band's success. Combination of Rod and Steve gave Maiden the guiding hand and unstoppable force that became one of the best bands ever. Well, they have been my favorite band since hearing Prowler for the first time.

Charlotte the Harlot was an example of a more rocking Maiden track from Iron Maiden's debut album. If you are familiar with the Maiden song 22 Acacia Avenue, that was kinda the spiritual successor to it with Bruce. Another 2 songs I recommend featuring Paul on Maiden's second album were 2 back to back songs are Killers and Prodigal Son.

The first album is underrated even by Steve Harris.
In an interview he said he hates it's sound / mix of it but in contrast with their last album on the first album all the instruments are audible clearly.
Paul also has some great songs with his next band "Battlezone". Generally he made heavier music than Maiden but had some more lyrical slow songs too.
