CHEVY MALIBU INTERMITTENT NO CRANK NO START P0615 DIAGNOSIS & FIX

  • In today's video we take a look at a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu with a 2.4l 4 cylinder engine. The customer complaint is that the car intermittently does not crank or start. After the owner lets the car cool down, she can restart it. Using a scan tool we find the trouble code P0615 stored in the ECM. This code is described as a starter relay control circuit failure code. The symptoms this car has and the trouble code remind me of a car I worked on previously with the same symptoms. That car turned out to have a faulty fuse box. Could this car have the same problem? Follow along as I show you how to diagnose and test this condition!

This is amazing. Back in the 90s I used to own Ford Tempo that had similar issue. After engine heated up it shut down. It was intermittent issue. Mechanics couldn’t figure out what the issue was. It became process of blind part replacement that costed money. Now, that I see this video it was eye opening how it is truly easy to misdiagnose the issue. Thank you Eric for sharing all these valuable information. 👍

impressed that you found time to not only read but also answer my comment . I didn't think of the wire under the relay pin because i'd be worried about over flexing the female connector in the fuse box but if you were going to replace the fuse box or for a road side emergency I could see it.But it would suck if decided to solder it and it didn't work right because of a lose pin fitment problem. Great work I regularly watch south main auto and fordtechmakuloc because of their knowledge and thought processand I'm going to add you to that list. THUMBS UP EMOJI

You SMA and Ivan are the ones who "fix" the problem. Great tech tip with the heat gun! I've used mine in the past to locate a problem. Another way to temporarily repair it would be to run an external wire from the relay socket to the wire going to ground. Not the best way to repair it, but better than having an intermittent problem until a new box is available.

I would heat up the capacitors and the display did not work and when I hot it with the freeze spray the display would work again. I’m so glad I came across this video after the car was in the shop for about a week and a half and they could not figure out what was wrong with it. My sons car is a 2012 Chevy Malibu and the mechanics could not figure out what was wrong with it. It was the same issue. No crank no start but you could jump it to get it to start. We ended up purchasing a new fuse box, direct from the Chevy parts dealer in town. When we took it in for service to Chevy, they did find the exact same code, but they said that the fuse box was on national back order. We were able to go directly to the parts department and pick it up the next day. The parts guy had it brought in from Arizona within the day we picked it up and took it to the service writer. He was stunned that we were even able to get this part. I guess service dept and parts dept do not talk to each other at that location. So if you take your car in and the service writer tells you a part is on national back order. Just call the parts department on your own and do your own research. The part was almost $500 and it was just around $200 for them to install it. We took the old fuse box apart and found the fractured copper wiring. Thank you so much for this video.

Eric, I've learned so much from you, Eric O of South Main Auto & other channels. I had an intro to circuits back in H.S. physics class, but that's all. You are probably the best instructor on YT, if not one of the best...
QUESTION: is there an auto tech book, reference manual, or a series of text books that you used in tech school that you would recommend I read & teach myself the fundamentals? (have a career & small kids, just want to step up my diy game) your explanation of bias voltage as the car's way of testing a circuit is the knowledge I'm looking for....

  • @deankay4434
    @deankay4434 Рік тому +1

As an ASE master tech since 1978, working on everything especially electrical. I used 4 home made jumper wires to connect the relay to the fuse / relay center. At this point, I can check voltage drop across 30 & 87. I can check the coil side to ground to see ground or ground plus drop across the coils internal resistance.
You are correct in the way the computer spends 4-5 minutes checking each circuit. But if good when cold, it passes the test and moves on to next.
TBS are generated by a high fail rate, parts sent in and engineering looks to find the root cause. It they have 40-60 dealer techs per day calling with a similar problem, they will give then 2,3,4 items to check. Once again, if a tech finds this issue, then they are sent a replacement and shipping label to get the fuse / relay center assembly sent back. If the get a number, then it is re-designed, new part number for the part and included into the “TSB”.
You can use a jumper wire to bridge the break as that would stand the expansion & contraction.
But call the dealer, ask for the service manager and be honest about having video, VIN numbers and ask if the regional service manager can call you or speak to the technical hot line. Now, there are more than one dealer out there, just like customer service at any company from Ford to Summit, sometimes you get a person that is good and will to help, sometimes they act like you are bothering them, and get no where fast. Also, the back of the owners manual has a GM customer service number and they maybe able to get you to the right folks.
I worked on contract labor for Raytheon but was in the field as an ACDelco service rep. We had the power to make phone calls, send photos or video into the department that handles fuse/relay boxes.
Locally, you will have a warehouse distributor that sells Delco parts to the dealer as well. They to know how to get an ACDelco service person who may take interest in your finds. I know it’s a lot of work on your behalf and no one at GM is going to send you a new Corvette for finding this issue but don’t give up!!!
ACDelco ex-Market Area Service Manager, but one of 56 nation wide who did hands on classes and held technical seminars for shops the warehouse distributors invited to attend. Yes, some of us were ASE Master Techs and had L1, P2 as well and owned a tool box and made our living once fixing cars, but not all are the same. It is hard to find someone to spend 243 days per year in a hotel holding seminars, teaching and dealing with returns. Plus, they have cut most of those jobs!
Great video and just remember that using a headlamp bulb that draws 4amps May heat that circuit better than a heat gun.
I will tell you, Thanks for your efforts!!! Parts on national back order as it is being redesigned and beefed up perhaps. So the 2013-2016 did not have this problem!

Great diagnosis as usual and it almost seems like the solder fix is at least as good as a new printed circuit fuse box which will fail if nothing has been done to compensate for the different expansion rates of copper and plastic. Hokey, but how about a hard wire fix to ground where the relay plugs in as a hack until the part is available and maybe permanent fix if there hasn’t been a product improvement done on the fuse box. Bless you for sharing all your knowledge with those that can’t afford shops that specialize in parts changing until the problem is finally solved.

This is probably the best video I've seen on UA-cam..I've watched 1000s of them and this is the 1st time I ever left a comment..matter of fact I didn't even know how to leave comments..you explained it so well and didn't fool around with the neighbors dog or here comes my wife Jane etc.etc..I don't even know why I watched this video because my problem is with a 2015 buick lacrosse with a no start that is making me crazy..but anyway thanks again and keep up the good work!!

Talk about finding a needle in a haystack.
Hopefully a talented electronics person sees your video(s) and decides to design and sell an improved replacement fuse box circuit board for this common problem.
Thanks for the nicely detailed video!

Glad you got your account back in order. This stuff is happening to a lot of channels where they get hijacked and then stream something and put scam links.
