Former CEO of volvo had the first 780 and you could see it around here in gothenburg . It was red and were equipped with a twin turbo , it was a special equipment . The last ones came with a four turbo gas powered and sixcylinder diesel . It was concidered to slow and were cut from production unfortunately . They were also very expensive to produce but very beautiful ! Definately my volvo favorite !
Dude you are such a stud! Truly inspiring. From mtw in L.A./Del Rey 90230. -With the 1993 Triple Black 240. We have named it Ozzy. Still struggling a bit with it. Has 158k mi. Thinking of selling for about $5,000. Cheers!
When David was checking out the 780, noting the details, feeling the leather and other materials, I expected him to say, at any moment, "I'll buy it, how much is it?" LOL It is a beautiful car I agree. The tan leather seats are to die for. The back seats were "cosy", as you would expect when the interior is shoehorned into an Italian designed body. Thanks for the review David.
David, a couple of observations, if I may. The white 780 is equipped with the PRV (Peugeot-Renault-Volvo) V6. It being a 90-degree V6 rather than the more common 60-degree, it was prone to failure because of its odd angle and firing order (it was really a cut-down V8, where 90-degrees is the accepted architecture). In 1989, the 780 became available with the Volvo B230FT turbo 4-cylinder, a more robust and powerful engine. And second, a minor point, but since Mom was Italian, one I have to address: "Bertone" is pronounced as if the last syllable rhymes with "phone." If it were pronounced "Bertonee," as you say it, the Italian spelling would be "Bertoni" (rhymes with "spumoni"). Thanks for the vid. I've had six Volvos, still pining for a 1990 780.
See, that's where things get complicated when people start 'observing'... the V6 in this 780 ist the B280f which is a highly revised version of the PRV engine, deemed 'unreliable' by people in the 'know' - the crank offset was changed to compensate for the 90 degree structure. Actually these engines are pretty bulletproof if you adjust valve clearance, change the oil to 15w-40 and replace the water pump as prescribed by Volvo. The old B28 engines weren't prone to failure due to their 90 degree architecture, but due to oil sludge in the oiling galleys in the heads. The version employed by Renault and Peugeot also liked to catch fire, because they used carburetors that let the gasoline get too hot and ignite before the combustion chambers.
Hey David, you make great vids! Get in touch & I’ll hook u up with the heritage guys at Volvo here in Gothenburg when/if you have the opportunity. // Per

@@DavidBello That was a quick reply David. Are you sure you're getting enough sleep? What time is it where you are?
Another cool video David. So nice as always 👍👌
The sail boat shot of you was awesome.
I had an 88 V6, couldn't kill that thing...
Glad you got the green SM but would have been nice to also see the red 404 cabrio.
