Driving with Gopro Inside My Intake Manifold (Toyota Supra Turbo)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 вер 2020
- I mount a GoPro camera inside of my intake manifold on my Toyota Supra Turbo and drive around like I normally do as well as a few Wide Open Throttle runs under boost to see what is going on inside the intake manifold of the Supra and your engine while you drive your car.
With all the air pressure differences, turbulence and Flow, I have always wondered what was going on inside the intake manifold when I was driving around especially on a turbocharged car where you have boost pressure, the sound of the engine running from inside the manifold was surreal.
I will be rigging and mounting cameras in all sorts of unusual places to give us a unique perspective and understanding of how things work, so don't forget to subscribe and hit that Bell!.

Love how the sound vanishes when the throttle's released and turbo goes to vacuum - no air to carry the sound! Plus the water vapour condensing out of the air because of that sudden low pressure. Awesome physics demonstration.
Check out RooST 200cc Dyno run posted by Scooter Tube, you can clearly see the water vapour at full throttle
Don't quote me but sound waves (mechanical waves) require a medium to travel, but isn't the intake manifold and the camera a medium that can oscillate the sound?
@@notjayk8057 Yes. That's absolutely what it is. Dude seems to think the car going into vacuum creates a state of 100% vacuum inside the manifold but it doesn't go anywhere near that high. There's still sound. It's just quieter because he's letting off the throttle.
It's because the air is moving in the opposite direction so the soundwaves just kind of don't go anywhere
@@notjayk8057 Yes. Sound travels through the manifold itself and the camera. Even if there was a perfect vacuum inside the manifold, the camera would still be vibrating and the microphone would record it as sound. GoPros attached to astronauts on spacewalk also record sound for the same reason.

Wow. That really gives some insight into the difference in fuel consumption when you drive normally and when you put your foot down. The difference in fuel delivery was amazing. When you floored it those jets were spraying hardcore!
For those wondering, the “flash” you see between shifts is actually the water vapor/ humidity boiling off as it’s pulled into vacuum when the throttle plate closes.
Interesting, the more i know
thanks, i was wondering what it is
Wouldn't that be condensation?
@@louf7178 It's evaporating as the throttle body closes. It does condense once the intake repressurizes. When there is a loss of pressure, i.e. vacuum, the molecules of a fluid will expand in order to fill the volume of its container. This causes the water to vaporize and "boil off". Once air is reintroduced to the system, the pressure forces the water molecules to compact together and return to a liquid state.

I work in engine testing, and have done similar tests using high-speed cameras. That oil will be crank case ventilation and turbo seals
Most plausible answer I’ve seen so far..
looks like fuel was blown into the plenum
I was looking for this comment. I figured it was blow by due to DI.
Thanks, if you notice the oil is red, I traced the problem after I finished the video, it turned out to be the low pressure vacuum switch for the power steering pump, it's bypassing the oil from the power steering pump into the hose that goes to the intake manifold.
Turbo seals won’t blow oil into the intake, it’ll come out the exhaust and generally burn and turn into blue smoke.
YT subtitles: "music"
understandable, have a great day
2JZ is music to my ears🥴
Seriously one of the silliest-cool-for-science! things I have seen to date on youtube. Seeing the pressure change "flash" a tiny cloud that was then consumed was epic !
Sounds incredible from within.
That oil is from the turbo. Every single turbo leaks some oil. It's just how it is constructed. It can't be done in a different way.
Another source of oil in the intake is crankcase ventilation. Gasses from the crankcase contain oil mist. Again: is possible to use the oil separator, but there are no perfect oil separators for use in engines. The flow of gasses is simply to high to perfectly separate the oil.
Btw, that Supra is sweet.
You can vent the OCT to atmosphere or use a crankcase evacuation kit to vent it to the exhaust while keeping vacuum into the crankcase thank to venturi effect.

the oil maybe from crankcase ventilation system which is located in front of the turbo intake if you not installed oil catch can
yeah and piston ring clearance is probably set to be wide since it has such a big turbo
I'm gonna guess it's probably from the turbo compressor seal. It's actually pretty common for there to be bearing blow-by into the intake manifold when you have a decent amount of boost and you give a good bit of throttle. When just driving normally it usually dries most of it up and it not too noticable.
@@fila1445 this is the issue. Its a 1000hp car thats making 100hp putting around town. The rings are cold and they have a healthy gap. Nothing to worry about just keep an eye on the oil level.

Oil's from the PCV. 100% normal. That's why people install catch cans, to grab the oil out of the PCV flow. Keeps the intake system clean, as the oil eventually forms deposits on the manifold, valves, and pistons.
Yes, I saw the white aerosol and I figured it was from the vacuum system.
Is that the red liquid in the intake manifold?.
Ehhh it kinda looks like something isn't torqued or sealed properly when he starts the engine... 2:36
Yep, and exactly why some diesels carbon up so bad. EGR mixes with CCV vapor and creates primordial ooze sludge.
It's only really a problem on direct injection engines. If you have port injection the fuel being sprayed over your intake valves will clean them. In fact oil companies put additives in their fuels per federal law that help clean your intake system on a port or multi port injection system.

My man.
One thing that surprised me, but makes a lot of sense, the flashes of white every time the engine went from wide open throttle and high boost, to closed throttle.
It'll be the moisture being condensed (edit: possibly not condensed, some form of separation) out of the air by the sudden drop in pressure.
The near instantaneous speed at which dissipates is a testament to just how much air these engines draw under load
Wouldn't the drop in pressure be flash boiling the water, not condensing it?
Lower pressure equals lower temp. So I would have thought condensing is correct?
Nah its a property of water that as pressure decreases so does boiling temp. Pretty interesting stuff, if youd want to see more look up boiling point vs pressure curves
@@richardof8899 my point exactly. You can have spontaneous boiling at very low temps when you have low pressure
At 20 in hg roughly the vacuum the intake would see when the throttle is shut the boiling point of water is 71oC. So as we can't see steam we are seeing water vapour escaping. That's cool! Although I do question how the intake temp would be 71oC as the intercooler is designed to keep the compressed air temp lower than that to increase its density. I wonder if a naturally aspirated engine would react the same being as the air entering would be colder than it is on a turbo and the intake is always under a vacuum pretty much.
Nice video man. Good job!!!
