    Solar Surge will teach you all about being energy independent and how to set up your home to run off-the-grid during an emergency. We empower families to take control of their energy generation and storage so that they will never be left in the dark without electricity.
    In this video, Joe unveils the new Sol-Ark 5k 1P (single phase) hybrid inverter unit. He does the unboxing, installation, and generator test run.

    Thanks Joe! Can you expand on how the loads i.e., 240VAC vs. 120VAC are separated in the panel? Been a subscriber for 1+ years

      In a typical electrical panel, normally every other 120V breaker is on a separate phase. They are 180 degrees out of phase electrically, so that gets you 240V across two adjacent breakers (normally). But in this installation, he's shorting both phases together (red and black wires joined at the SolArk). Doing this provides 120V to all the 120V circuits, but the 240V circuits see 0V (and aren't usable when on backup). Of course, as Joe mentions, this only works if the main breaker to the grid is turned off.
      What he's showing is often done, but it isn't compliant to any electrical code. There is no physical interlock preventing simultaneous grid connection and inverter backfeed (and also in this case, phase shorting). A mechanical lever is normally used to physically prevent the mains breaker from ever being engaged while backfeeding power (from a generator or inverter).

    I watch your channel and consider you an expert. That said, I’m curious as to why you installed such a small single phase system?

    Seen a few of the 5k 1P videos, but none on the actual install and or 'live setup'. Much appreciated. Cost wise, its a great choice. It'll get interesting between one or two of these versus one or two of the EG4 units. Sol-Ark has better support, better R&D, and less settings (which is a HUGE plus for most people that should NOT be over-tinkering). My only concern would be the the 'process' for failing over being manual. Usually not a big deal unless no one is home, OR may be a pain for the 1-3 hour brown outs. Depends on the stability of your area, and being new construction, that has yet to be flushed out. Cool thing is having the equipment gives you options that allow for wiring reconfiguration down the road. Thanks for the video!

      $4500 for the unit is a great choice cost wise, and for 120V only? Versus what specifically?

      @@billjohnson3344 just meant compared to Victron, Schneider, larger Sol-Arks, "black box setups ala Tesla or Enphase', etc. You pay for the name and support. The EG4 is 1/4 the cost but there are trade-offs which may or may not matter.

    WARNING: NEVER parallel a single ungrounded (hot) conductor to BOTH distribution panel busbars, as was done in this demonstration. If there are any multi-wire branch circuits present, or if they are added later, you are risking an electrical fire from an overloaded grounded (neutral) conductor. NEC code requirements (grounded conductor sizing, multiwire branch circuit allowances & etc.) are based on the assumption that balanced loads will eliminate partial loading on the grounded conductors(s). By paralleling both buses, you are forcing all grounded conductors to carry 100% unbalanced loading. This can result in a fire.

    Didn’t know you could sell power back on 120v. I’m not sure there is another grid inverter that exports like that.

    Nice system but seems solar doesn't contribute to consumption and storage when the generator is running? Could be OK at night but a gas waster in the daytime? Can solar and the generator work simultaneously?

    I'm surprised that it is not part of Myrtle Beach electric code to have a "rain proof while in use" cover for the generator cord input connection.
    I like the Sol-Ark being used with a small generator, but I don't like the single phase aspect of this model.
    I don't have a house that makes solar panels a valid option, but I do like having a whole house battery backup setup that I could charge using a small generator. This would allow for me to only run the generator when the batteries are low and make for a far more efficient use for the generator output. It is a huge waste of gas and generator run time when the vast majority (season dependent) of the time a house is not using 1kw of power.

      For the gas generator, I like to let the generator warm up prior to connecting any load.

      Great Video @SolarSurge! I think I will purchase on of these units base on what you demonstrated. Yes, @edwardbyrd7667, in my case, I follow the same practice to properly ground my genset. I connect my Floating Neutral configured genset to the Transfer Switch before starting engine for warmup. Of course, before doing so, with all loads disconnected from genset itself and the transfer switch still set to LINE. I do this just in case a ground fault condition has already occured (but I don't know it yet) at my PORTABLE genset. Who knows, moving the genset or portable tools I plug in could have knocked something loose. The genset ground fault should then "mostly" utilize a least resistant electrical path, via the cable, going to the GROUND/NEUTRAL bonding screw in the main panel , in turn, causing a breaker on the genset to trip. Trying to avoid a potential, at the frame of the generator, as much as possible.

      @@SolarSurge There shouldn't be a load on the input line when you connect it in any case. Please tell me there is a disconnect between your generator input and the panel you are powering.
      Your credibility is taking a nosedive here.

    I think the MPP's, Gro Watts and the EG4's of the world are causing some serious competition and Sol-Ark has responded quite nicely. BTW is that generator clean power that you are backfeeding with or is it a modified sine wave?

    • @billjohnson3344
      @billjohnson3344 Рік тому +1

      Didn't hear a mention of the Sol-Ark 5K price, which is $4500 (not sure if Joe got for free though for promoting). That's a lot more than even name brand competition, let alone the China stuff. Schneider SW4048 can do split phase 120/240, and is only $1850 without solar (price of inverter and Insight Home). The workhorse XW is not that much more for lots of surge power. Add charge controller(s) based on solar. Sol-Ark still overpriced, and this unit limited with 120V only support. And Joe's install method would not be code approved - with no mains interlock and shorting phases.

    Hey Joe this me again from Puerto Rico and my question this time around is can I use this inverter with the POWER OPTIMAZER from solarEdge the reason why I ask is I had a SOLAR GRID of 5.7kw with (24) REC panel w/ optimisers and a solar edge 7.6 kw and (2) Powerwall Gen.1 one went bad during (FIONA) and the other one got me by but giving error code into the inverter, lone story short took the hall system down and now I want to build the way I mention before a SolArc w/ optimisers and a TESLA Powerwall2 hoping that ELON trade the (2) Powerwall gen 1 for a one Gen2 Powerwall. Can I go (24) poweroptimazers , SolArc, Powerwall 2 battery ? thanks for the answer.

    One thing you mentioned in your video prompts me to ask. Why are sol-ark not offered by grid tied solar installers?

    • @SolarSurge
      @SolarSurge  Рік тому +1

      The Sol-Ark is a more complex install and the system does require a bit more maintenance than a Grid-tie only system. Most installers that handle Off Grid systems will handle Sol-Ark with no problem.

    Lead acid!? What depth of discharge will u use? That will significantly cut into the 9.6kWh capacity…Or sacrifice lifespan if you discharge below 50%. Maybe, by the time those batteries fail, prices will be down or the tech will be much better for lithium. I’m not impressed with your chemistry choice.
