Watching your amazing review took me back in time as my dad had a 5 door version of that Cherry on an A plate in white and agree such a lovely car thank you for brringing back the memories and will follow your channel for sure 😊
This is absolutely brilliant and looks to be in showroom condition!! What a fantastic 'survivor' and I hope it continues! Big compliments to the owner! Fun fact - Here in Australia, the N12 Nissan Cherry was sold as the Nissan Pulsar and was also shared with GM-Holden (Vauxhall/Opel) and so was also sold in Australia as the LB Holden Astra! While the Nissan Pulsar was sold as a 4dr sedan, 5dr hatch and 2dr Coupe (N12 Nissan Pulsar EXA) the Holden Astra version was sold only as a 5dr hatch. The N12 Nissan Pulsar and LB Holden Astra were also built in Australia. The 3dr hatch was never sold in our market. Really enjoying your channel Steph, keep up the great work! Two thumbs from Australia!
I think you should do the gearbox walk through in all videos, Steph, because when I was growing up most of these cars didn't run well at all. It's great to see them looking this good for once!
i just discover your channel while looking for wallpaper on google images, i am completely in love with your channel from this first video, ill be binging all your videos all night now, thanks for these awesome reviews, you choose the best cars to review.
My mum had a C reg Cherry (also gold) and was the car I learned to drive and pass my test in back in the 90s. Seeing that interior again gave me major flashbacks to those simpler times. Lovely to see such a glowing review of a modern classic :)
You like a bit a comfort now You're getting old? Girl, I laughed so hard I nearly fell off my Zimmer frame ;-) Great review as always! What a great little car.
In Oz, they were the 5 door Datsun or Nissan Pulsar. Bought one new in 1984. Never let me down but I never fell in love with it. Perhaps the problem with Japanese things is that they are just so well designed that everything falls to hand, everything just works, it's all balanced. Overall, the ease of ownership makes what should be perfection, tends to feel boring. Bertrand Russell wrote about a comfortable level of wrong. He was right.
My dad had a Bluebird a few years ago, and the daughter of a friend had a Cherry, very similar to the one you drove! I was pleased with the comfort and quietness of both cars! My dad preferred the armchair-like front seats of my Renault 20! Lovely video, and I'm glad you enjoyed your drive! :-)
Introduced late 83 (A reg) I think and lasted on the UK market until 1986 (D reg). You could have 3 levels of trim, the L, GS and SGL. Both 3 and 5 door bodies were offered. In 1985 there were special edition Maxima models and there were run-out added value Spirit versions, too. I liked the streamlined look of these Cherries and once again loved your review of this sadly now very rare cars. They all rusted away...
Another great review, thank you Steph. Jamie has a lovely car there. I didn't realise that there was a connection between Herbert Ausin and Nissan! ( A Nissan 'Ruby'.) What a thought! Thanks again.
I learned to drive in a 1979 Datsun Sunny 120Y. It had nearly half a million miles on the clock. The paint had no gloss. The bodywork was like a lace curtain. And yet the original engine and gearbox were still perfect. The engine couldn't be heard on tickover. I was amazed by it. I think Nissan/Datsun cars of the period are very quiet as a breed and amongst the easiest cars to drive.
My dad bought me one of these for my 21st back in 94,it was sky blue and i hated it when i first saw it,not cool enough for a young lad,but when i drove it i loved it!!very nippy car and lovely to drive, very light clutch and gearbox, and loved the raspy exhaust note!embarrassed many boy racers in their xr3i's!!
This brings me back, it reminds me of the 1988 Nissan Sonny RZ-1 coupe my Mum had back then, I loved it as it was sporty and cool, those were the days!
I had an '83 Nissan Sunny once. It basically shared its underpinnings, engine and gearbox with the Cherry. It's incredible how a mechanically simple car can feel so refined.
Nice to see one of these in such good condition. My first car was a Nissan Cherry Europe, probably one of the last left in the country, but it definitely wasn't in as good nick as this. Loved the Alfa engine, but it wasn't the most reliable after 22 years. I finally managed to crash it and couldn't get the spare parts, so donated the carcass to the local fire dept. Was pretty gutted as it would probably be a rare collectible now.
I love and adore this car. I have an nissan cherry n12 from 1985 1.5 N/A 8V automatic. Tuned the engine with period correct engine modifications from that time, Stage 2 camshaft, double webber carburetor setup, exhaust manifold, inlet manifold, worked head, different pistons, higher compression, custom exhaust. R32 GT-R brakes, rear conversion to disc brakes 75HP stock, 145HP now. I own it now for 15 years and never gonna sell it. yeah parts are very hard to come by, i use mostly second hand parts to keep it going, engine parts are relatively easy, but bodyparts like trim mirrors fender, interior parts are also very hard to get. keep that in mind while buying one its not easy
I'm restoring a later Nissan N13 Pulsar here in Australia. The "Cherry" was callled a "Nissan Pulsar" in many markets including Australia. It's quite an easy car to work on for a non-qualified mechanic like me. Thanks for putting this video up here!
I have a cherry turbo in black on an 84 or b reg and I love it it was my dads but he passed it down to me. I love it it’s just a great car it’s a phase 1 with phase 2 interior turbo steering wheel clear corners etc. we have owned the car around 13 years
I had a Gold Datsun Cherry. It was the coupe model with a contrasting brown roof. I loved its sporty looks. The intermittent wipers had an adjustable timing knob.
Ive owned Minis, beetles, mgs, jaguars and the car I miss most was my old Datsun Cherry. Bought for £50. Was so simple to work on and just went on and on. Great cars.
What a cracking example - looks very tidy indeed. Back in the early '90s my then partner bought a Nissan Pulsar of the same vintage, with a 3-speed auto - 'twas as slow as a wet week, as I recall.
Laurel, Cedric, Silvia, Bluebird, Sunny, Cherry 🍒. Datsun/Nissan had some great names for their cars! This fabulous N12 Cherry is like the 'great grandparent' to my 2003 Almera, which is N16.
Great choice of car for a review Steph! I owned a 1981 Cherry back in the 1984 - 87 period, so it was the previous version to this one. Mine also had the built in radio which was a little unusual back then. It drove smoothly, with light controls and was quite nippy too. Needless to say, it never let me down. I loved it!
My sister had one as her first car. It was white and the interior was totally red. Red seats, dashboard and steering wheel. I remember it was very comfortable.
My Dad had a 1.3 GL Y reg 5 door. Had these little sliders just behind the handbrake centre console which operated the rear door locks (this was before remote central locking) . We took in foreign families who were learning English during summers for a while, one family from Munich, the Dad was in quality control at the BMW factory, was taking mental notes of the car to see how well built it was. A year later we went across Europe in this Cherry and stayed with the same German family and got a personal tour of the BMW factory (on a weekend mind). Topped by the journey there in a 7 series which merely floated along their autobahn at speed I'd never experienced before then (obviously we're only allowed 70mph in UK 😉 fur cough cough)
Love your research Steph. That gearbox pattern is perfect for a reverse turn. Empty clear car park etc. Get a 'scrap' car. Go flat out backwards, spin the steering wheel to the right. As the car is spinning gives you time to change from reverse to second. Floor it when it straightens and 99% of the people will think you are better than James Bond.....or later films that I've not seen. Honestly, this will boost your cred 1000%
Oh. Also Steph, just for your research bio. When Datsuns were first imported, they rotted worse than an BL or Ford. I saw one, not 3 years old, with rust holes in the ROOF. True story.
That would make sense the car being assembled in Japan with its indicators being mounted on the RHS of the steering wheel. I would like to add one more thought to the Nissan-Datsun conundrum, I own a 2002 Nissan-Datsun ute that was imported from Japan to NZ. With that in mind I think Nissan used the Datsun name as a model identifier for commercial vehicles assembled in Japan at that time. Love the video, love the car, great watch 😀
I absolutely love that car! My mum had a Sunny 2-door saloon in the same colour on an A-reg, and it was simply a gorgeous wee car (until some idiot slammed into the back of it and wrote it off!), One of those cars that I would love to have a shot at driving, and to be honest if I could afford it, owning!
The 1980s cherry is miles apart from the 1970s version in the other video. I can’t remember ever being in a 1980s one. Not sure how this relates to the sunny..which one is bigger.
I had to laugh at the ridiculous i3 thing stopped by the cops at 17:13 😂 I hate them as they represent everything thats gone tragic about modern cars. Buggery ugly too yet people buy them simply for the badge nailed on 🤦♂️
Nice review so rare to see these early Nissan’s the N12 was sold as a Nissan pulsar here in Australia there was even A Nissan Pulsar ET turbo version we never got the three door body only the 5 door Hatchback or 4 door sedan plus with partnership with Holden or GMH with model sharing due to the political climate in Australia at the time it was sold as a Holden Astra not to be confused with the European Astra we didn’t get many European GM products back in the 80’s
Late comment as I'm only just catching up on your back catalogue! Many many years ago I had a bright yellow 1985 Cherry ZX Turbo. Sorry to say I ruined it (youth and stupidity) but it's definitely the one car I truly miss owning, especially as they're so so rare now! Great fun to drive, I'd urge you to do a review if you ever get the chance to drive a Turbo.
I had the previous version of this, a 1981 blue Datsun Cherry 3 door. It had plenty of room and was extremely reliable. I remember the Alfa version of this car - very rare then and even more so now I also saw a Triumph Dolomite last night as reviewed in a previous presentation
I learned to drive in one of these back in 84,really nice to drive. A couple of weeks before my test my instructor traded it in for a new Fiat Uno which was a terrible load of junk! Still passed first time though much to his amazement. I wonder if you could test an early eighties Nissan Laurel, lovely old cruiser!
I had a brand new Cherry in 1982 it had only one mayor fault, the clutch failed and was slipping badly after 4 months, I was told this was a common fault, and a new one was fitted under warranty. I found the car to be a bit rough and noisy but, otherwise reliable compared to some others that I have purchased.
The Cherry Europe was sold in Nissan dealers and the Alfa Arna was sold in the Alfa dealer . Also the n12 has a Nissan engine the Europe and arna had the flat 4 Alfa engine.
I think Japanese cars, brought modernity to cars ,forced western manufacturers to raise their game in terms of reliability & equipment .... We should all be grateful 👌
My Granddad had one of these. It was the first brand new car he ever bought, it was an A reg in red. The week he had it he parked up at work and some one had keyed the paintwork on the side of the car. Unfortunately as well, he was driving with my Mom and Dad in the car talking about their wedding cake in 1989, he went over the lights on green but someone came over on red and crashed into them, wrote the car off. Being a very superstitious kind of man, he swore he'd never buy a red car again because, of the bad luck he had since owning it. I believe after that he bought a second hand Austin Princess.
You can tell where the car was manufactured by the VIN. If it begins with a J it was built in Japan, if it begins with SA through to SM, it was built in the UK.
Hi Steph Ive just subscribed. The Austin metro & the Nissan cherry where my 1st 2 cars. Totally brilliant thank you so much for reviewing these. My daily driver is a ford kuga I’m now looking for an Austin or rover metro. I’ve had Morris minors and triumph 1300. Due to personal issues I had to let them go. Would love to chat cars with you Kind regards paul ramsgate
I love the Datsun sunny bluebird micra and cherry as my mum and dad had the sunny and my uncle had the bluebird and my aunt had the cherry and the old 1980 sunny mark 1 I would love to drive these vehicles as I am autistic. I have a new 20 plate Micra at the moment.
Ah ,I bought a 1985 cherry back in the nineties for the princely sum of 200 quid, never missed a beat, nothing spent on it,ultra reliable, alas in ended it's days in a desolate bog...rip old pal.
Did you ever have a chance to make a review on a Subaru? I used to own few of their models (1970's until 1990's) in the past. I don't know if they ever made it to the UK.
My dad’s bluebird being an 1985 had Japanese labels under the bonnet, I think it was the 86 through 90 bluebird’s that were built in Sunderland. The first micra was Datsun badged but said Datsun by Nissan on a small badge at the rear. I used to like the look of the Stanza, was a little more curvy than the Cherry Europe.
I learned to drive in one of these - boring but very sound car. The Cherry Europe/ARNA mashup was different from this and didn't sell much. This gold example is pure Nissan.
Fabulous! These were as common in the 80's and 90's as the Qashqai is now
I had 5 of these, absolutely loved them.
Best car I have ever owned.
This car in your review is stunning.
Watching your amazing review took me back in time as my dad had a 5 door version of that Cherry on an A plate in white and agree such a lovely car thank you for brringing back the memories and will follow your channel for sure 😊
I actually had a cherry turbo many years ago, absolutely loved it
I didn't it existed in turbo ☺

I agree with you that 80s Nissans were damn well built and so very pleasant to drive and own, despite not being very exciting to look ar.
Omg childhood memorys. I remember the climate controls, i used to Play with IT. I also remember the handle for the Seat to climb in the back.❤
My first car was a 1983 Nissan Sunny. I sold it when it had done 200,000 KM. Nothing was wrong with it when I sold it. The car was a gem to own.
Perfect descriptive analysis

You can tell where the car was manufactured by the VIN. If it begins with a J it was built in Japan, if it begins with SA through to SM, it was built in the UK.
I think SA would be South Africa and SM
South 'Merica.
Andy Field South Africa is “A” and South America is the number 8 or 9
Oohhhh I love facts like this cheers lovely
Mum had a red c reg one, what a classic
Hi Steph
Ive just subscribed. Would love to chat cars with you
Kind regards paul ramsgate
I love the Datsun sunny bluebird micra and cherry as my mum and dad had the sunny and my uncle had the bluebird and my aunt had the cherry and the old 1980 sunny mark 1 I would love to drive these vehicles as I am autistic. I have a new 20 plate Micra at the moment.
How the driving experience? Is it good?
It drives fantastic. For a 35 year old car, it can keep up with modern traffic no probs. I love it 🍒
Ah ,I bought a 1985 cherry back in the nineties for the princely sum of 200 quid, never missed a beat, nothing spent on it,ultra reliable, alas in ended it's days in a desolate bog...rip old pal.
Did you ever have a chance to make a review on a Subaru? I used to own few of their models (1970's until 1990's) in the past. I don't know if they ever made it to the UK.
Beautiful nissan
My dad’s bluebird being an 1985 had Japanese labels under the bonnet, I think it was the 86 through 90 bluebird’s that were built in Sunderland. The first micra was Datsun badged but said Datsun by Nissan on a small badge at the rear. I used to like the look of the Stanza, was a little more curvy than the Cherry Europe.
This car was just unreal. A true timearp.
I learned to drive in one of these - boring but very sound car. The Cherry Europe/ARNA mashup was different from this and didn't sell much. This gold example is pure Nissan.
BEAUTIFUL CHERRY
NISSAN #1 ❤️
Nice car once a common sight on the roads nothing special just a good work horse a worthy surviver 👀👍
Definitely 🙌🙌🙌🙌
You have been spotted girl! You were driving through a village called Flockton in West Yorkshire last Sunday x
That’s very near my house 😂
all 1980's cherrys, sunnys and micras were built in japan, we built the bluebird in the uk from 1986 :-)
