These were great cars, reliable and stylish. Rovers were such excellent cars. I live in Thailand and still see Rover 800's driving around in Bangkok today. Here in Bangkok we have the busiest roads in the world and they manage the traffic and heat perfectly. We love your channel here! 👍👍

I see the owner fitted the Mk2 Vitesse alloy wheels (I had a Mk2 '94 Vitesse Fastback 2.0 turbo) - they are such a nice clean design. British car industry, esp. BL was destroyed by management incompetence, lack of vision, and above all, disinterested employees that would strike if the hot pie machine was broken. Unions became too powerful and uncontrolled unfortunately. They didn't accept concepts such as 'striking a happy medium' between the workers and the companies! :-)

    • @idriveaclassic

The collapse of BL shouldn’t have happened. Great cars - poorly managed.

I m not defending the too numerous strikes of the seventies, but by the late eighties manufacturing strikes were vary rare I worked in manufacturing from 1985 till 2007 and stopped paying union fees as they were a waste of time.Rover lasted into the 90's and by then there assembly staff were bending over backwards to keep there company going.Remember "Roverisation " anyone.Other companies UK plants usually closed because it became cheaper to make uk staff redundant than there european counterparts.wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

I always liked the 800 series Rovers. Understated and once the early production gremlins were sorted, decently built and specified cars. The V6 engined cars were not lacking refinement and had a decent turn of speed. The boot on the hatchback models was enormous. And they were very comfortable for long journeys. What's not to love?
Also, the Triumph Acclaim was a seriously underrated car!

Old man had a British Racing metallic green 827 manual Vittesse on a G plate. It was a lovely well appointed car, the engine was whisper quite but could shift if wellied. The interior was very nice, it was not too bad on fuel on a long distance run either. It was reliable and well liked, the 75 was too retro.

This car is so cool. The beauty of cars like these is that you get all the mod-con you need on a modest budget. I don't know much about Rover, but it seems like they and Honda were shaking hands at the time, and what you got in these was a very comfortable, smart-looking vehicle that fit a middle class budget without being strip-down. The Sterlings seemed ahead of their time back in the late 1980's. Definitely executive range, and much like the Acura we knew here in the States at the time. Another wonderful video, Steph!

Austin Rover made some great car's but never provided the car's quality tested and developed, as such warranty claims were ridiculous, re the 827...great car and true story. I worked at a rover agent in Blackburn and we had a customer who bought a 825 and complained he was getting passed on the autobahn's by German car's, he asked if we could make it faster lol... He got an 827 eventually and said no longer getting passed on the autobahn's lol😉

Nice video, a few misconceptions, there are more than 150 left and the US cars weren't built in Japan, Honda did build around 4000 800's in Japan mainly for the Australasian market. In a recipricol arrangement Rover built around 2500 Legends for the UK Market at Cowley. Tony Ponds car wasn't really a standard production car, it was modified, only a fool would try to throw a standard 800 around the Isle of Man at those speeds and expect to survive. Tony was a brilliant racing driver but he was no fool. Enjoyed the video and your upbeat message

Nice review Steph 😉 I have always liked these, and all rovers, as a kid I had (still have it) a metallic maroon Rover Sterling in my matchbox collection, I was one of my favourite cars out of a collection of about 400 little cars, since then I’ve always liked them, one features near the beginning of the living daylights Bond film and look so sophisticated and a great 80’s looker. Personally I own a V8 P6 Auto as I just love 70’s cars more in general, it’s like having a time machine, oh the smell of the leather, the sound, just great.

    I have a May 1988 Autocar magazine: a Rover 827Si cost £16550. Equivalent cars maybe were :
    A Ford Granada 2.4i Ghia cost £15280. An Audi 100 2.2E cost £15999
    The jag xj6 2.9 £18000 and the senator 2.5i was £15275.
The 827 was then very expensive.
By contrast, the Carlton 1.8Li was £10500 Ford Granada 2.0L was £11400 and a Golf GTI from £10400.
The basic Range Rover was £19160. This Rover then should have been good at £16500.
The Rover Sterling was £21380 ........ ouch.

These cars were sold under the Sterling name in the United States for a few years.
Our neighbors , who were British ex pats, had one similar to this one and a Jaguar XJ6.
I always thought they were much better looking than my parents Mercedes 123 sedan and W124 wagon.
They may have been beautiful but they were both HORRENDOUSLY unreliable!
I lost count of how many times my mother had to give Mrs White a ride to the grocery store or the children to school.
The dash in the Sterling warped and the interior plastics turned green after its first summer in the sun.

This video was a trip down memory lane for me; a colleague of mine had one from new in the late 80's and I was impressed with the quiet and smooth power delivery although it could have done with an extra ratio if you wanted to drive it hard. The interior was a major leap up for Rover with deep velour and quite nice switchgear for those days. I must say though it felt like Rover was leaning quite heavily on the Honda parts bin quite heavily to up their game. The only thing I was unimpressed about on this car was a fairly raw edge on the hard plastic around the bottom of the seat so that in itself tells you how much of an improvement this car was that I had only one criticism.

The US version of the Acura Legend was made in Japan, but the Sterling branded ones were made in the UK. The leather certainly smelled nicer in the Sterling, but why didn't it have an airbag? The Acura did. I only knew a couple of early models which were a letdown with their Lucas electrics relative to Honda's NipponDenso setup.

I would have liked an engine startup from behind, finding that it was a v6. Swedish as I am I do have a crush on Rover cars. I also hope that you stumble over a Volvo 940SE in the future. My -94 is a sturdy and low cost car, but it’s a bit shabby chic on the colour coating. No rust though. It’s called “The latest real Volvo” by the mechanics. But it’s a bit far from Yorkshire to Östersund. 😉

Most UK Police forces actually used the Vauxhall Senator which to be honest was a considerably quicker (in 24V form) and better built car. The Rover 827 was used extensively by the Met as the politicians wanted to see Rovers in London. That look likes a truly exceptional example many police cars had visible rust before they got to 3 years old. They were a nice looking car but let down by fragility, poor build quality, rust and Lucas Prince of Darkness electronics. The Americans actually liked the car (in its Sterling guise) but couldn't understand how Austin Rover had managed to turn a perfectly reliable Honda Legend into such a complete and utter dog. Many of the US Sterling models died early being broken for spare parts to fix Honda Legends.

Rover 800's for sale = zero
    Ford Cortina's for sale = 20+
You can thank your car scrappage schemes for the alarmingly low quantity of late 1980s/1990s cars. There will now be certain models of cars that are rarer than certain cars that are triple the age of a car from this era, sadly. A lot of good stuff got killed for bugger all reason whatsoever apart from the fact the owner got a tasty tasty discount on a Kia Miserybox.

US spec cars were all Sterlings, and much more deluxe inside. Unfortunately they bombed in the marketplace despite being essentially a Legend, though our engine got stuck and was never upgraded beyond the 2.7. Dead last in build quality and if the 3500 hadn't driven the nail in Rover's US coffin (which it should have done) this did. What a shame, it had a beautiful interior and was even sold as a manual.

US market cars (Sterling branded) were Cowley built. I am still using my 1989 827 Sli on a regular basis. It is starting to show some minor interest from the tinworm but still tows my Jetskis to the Hudson River every summer weekend. Most people in New York don't know what it is but get taken by surprise when it leaves them standing at the lights. Was it your hair sticking to the roof or the headlining falling? The saggy headlining is probably the most obvious sign of my cars old age.

Several times here in Colorado, USA at our local library I’ve seen a mint condition Sterling, the North American marque for these. The driver has been a woman who appears to be in her eighties, so I’m guessing she may be the original owner. I need to get up the nerve to ask her about the Sterling. It seems that the owners of quirky autos enjoy answering questions about their vehicles.

Random fact, if someone hasn't already posted it - the 800 had a separate ECU for the Windows. And it used to go wrong lol. Windows had a mind of their own, would go down but not go up etc. Replace the ECU and they would work again, until that ECU failed. Every day was an event :D.

Still a shame the Rover we know is gone and with it a lot of these era models. My childhood revolved around my dads Rover obsession!. Always remember the Mk100, remains a quality car for me, his unfortunately rusted out despite constant maintenance and battle to try and put right. Always said if I were to get a classic car I’d get a Rover ;)

Beautiful car. The US got the 8 series badged as a Sterling, I am guessing Mark I. When the Acura (Honda) Legend first hit the market, sedans (saloons) had an engine in a different state of tune to the coupés. The Sterling got the Coupé engine, which had more power. Unfortunately, it also had more issues with durability. The Aisan automatic gear box was also prone to running hot. Smart owners always fitted an auxiliary transmission cooler and changed the fluid every 24,000 miles without fail. What killed both the Legend and the Sterling was rot. Both suffered badly from structural rust the ate the cars from the inside out. By the time they looked poorly, they were structurally unsafe. Sad, because the were lovely to drive. Transmission fluid is easy to get here. It should be Dexron II/Mercon. If not, the Honda gear oil can be found at any parts store here in Canada.
Love the video and the channel. Superb.

    • @michaeltutty1540
      @michaeltutty1540 3 роки тому

Steph, rewatching this a rear on. In the mean time I have learned a few things. You were mentioning that the service parts for the transmission are not available. My best guess is that it is the same 4 speed automatic made by Aisan-Warner that was used in the Honda/Acura Legend as well as the 6 cylinder North American Honda Accord, and more than likely the Honda Odyssey minivan. Service parts should be plentiful when looking up parts for one of them. A quick glance through Hollander's should give a definitive answer about what parts interchange with what Honda models.

Interesting car, I live in the United States, I just passed on a Sterling 827 that was stored indoors since new but had not been run since 1991. I now regret passing on that car now but at the time was doing a similar project on a Peugeot 405mi16. It was interesting how Sterling was marketed in the US, they promoted it as a British luxury car on par with Jaguar, their ad was if you could find a better car for less money they would give you an estate in England.
