@@seaoggo9574 Industrial Society and Its Future By Theodore John Kaczynski Introduction The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race. They have greatly increased the life-expectancy of those of us who live in “advanced” countries, but they have destabilized society, have made life unfulfilling, have subjected human beings to indignities, have led to widespread psychological suffering (in the Third World to physical suffering as well) and have inflicted severe damage on the natural world. The continued development of technology will worsen the situation. It will certainly subject human beings to greater indignities and inflict greater damage on the natural world, it will probably lead to greater social disruption and psychological suffering, and it may lead to increased physical suffering even in “advanced” countries.

@@farrider3339 It sounds to me as if maybe you've over-freighted idea/thought with a negative status? Thought and idea TEND towards suffering, sure, in that our "default" relationship to them is sub-optimal (separating thought from thinker, considering thought on its own to be a "window" to truth, etc.), but thought as such is not a source of suffering, nor is anything as such arguably. If by ideology you mean that sub-optimal, clinging, relationship TO thought/idea, then I think I would agree with you. But you can't just baldly lump compassion in with that, particularly since compassion- righty considered- is THE premier action of man which is exactly NOT fueled by fear. It would be more accurate to say that a man who is "freed from" fear, acts compassionately by definition.

IS hell a horrible place? I think in theory, if the human mind and its capacities were not qualitatively altered in one's transport to hell, then in fact NO place or situation is horrible *as such*. It might be unpleasant, for a time, but not unbearably so, and with eternity factored into the equation at a specific point Heaven, Hell, and Earth would be indistinguishable from one another with all advantages of time. Because the mind (in theory) has the capacity to radically alter one's relationship with pain/pleasure, using the power of attention, and various time-tested techniques described in mystical/eastern wisdom traditions.

"If the human mind and its capacities were not qualitatively altered" I've always thought that heaven and hell were not just alterations of a person's environment, but of a person's capacity for feeling. Of course, this is based on nothing and I have no way to prove it, but it makes sense to me.
I mean it makes sense. Maybe for alot of humans the only way to make them feel happy is that they were chosen. Everyone gets a good afterlife but for some that requires knowledge that they are better and those who truly see through ideology put on a show for them in order to feel better.
