I discovered this channel last night and I was blown away! Congratulations because this is without a doubt the best e-drums channel I've watched in UA-cam by far! That being said, could you or the rest of the users help me, please? :D This year is my 10th anniversary as an e-drummer and I feel that my Yamaha DTXplorer has served me fantastically but it's time to get a new and better kit. I was between these two options until I watched this amazing TD17KV review and I would like to know your opinion: -Alesis Crimson II Mesh Kit (It's the cheapest, but as far as I know, the pads break easily and It's not very durable). -Roland TD 07 KV (Roland is known to be the best brand for e-drums and I think this could be a good option). What I'm looking for in my future new kit is basically mesh but durable pads (no more rubber, please!), good material and sounding quality and dual (or triple) zone in the pads. I am willing to expend "AROUND" 1000€: If you could recommend me a good option for less, so much the better ! But if 200€ extra make a REAL difference, I'm willing to expend more: E-drums are so expensive that you need the guarantee that you are using your money wisely! And finally, is it worth to consider this TD 17 KV over the other two I mentioned considering my priorities? I've fallen in love with TD 17... But it's a little pricey for me. Sorry for the long post and my possible gramatical mistakes (English is not my first language!) And thank you so much for the responses and the existencia of this channel. Keep rocking!
Freddie Shields how are you finding the vh10 hi hat? I can’t seem to reliable get a choke out of it, if I do a syncopated dance beat with an open and close hi hat, it doesn’t always choke accurately , I’ve played around with all collaboration settings
@@drumsonly44 did you manage to calibrate it to play accurately? For me, im deciding between kv vs kvx I currently have a moving hi hat on a stand on my Yamaha kit and I hate it. It misses notes and it doesn't play accurately.
J T I got a decent hi hat stand which helped, it’s not perfect but plays ok. I started using the software ezdrummer and plugging my module into the computer and playing through that. It has a built in compatibility with Roland modules and has a ‘closed’ setting for the hi hat which makes it a lot better.
The best thing about this kit is the cymbal sounds I think. Not 100% convinced on the actual drum sounds yet. Still machine gunning toms and although the snare sounds good... doesn't sound like a real sample of a drum. Great kit for the money though.
having owned the dm10mkII pro briefly I would take the TD17KV any day of the week and twice on sundays. I'm not even a huge fan of the TD17 but the DM10mkII pro was a fail.
Great video. I wish you can go into the layering and importing sounds further next. For me the comparison is against the Alesis Strike Pro (price is no issue as I would be one drum set for life) and if you compare the two later that would be awesome too.
the only thing I don't like about the module itself is it only has a stereo output. if it had at least two more outputs so you could separate out the kit in a live situation say Channel 1 kick, Channel 2 snare, channel 3 toms, Channel 4 cymbals. Other than that, I like the kit. I think the sounds are really really good
This is definitely the best drumset at the price point. All depends what features people are after though. To me this is more interesting than the 25 for sure
I bought the Alesis DM10 MK2 Pro w/ mesh heads last week and I don't think I will trade it in for a TD17kv/x. What I do like about Roland is a I don't need to adjust the trigger settings like I did with Alesis, which took about 45 minutes to get it right for me. The extra Tom and much bigger size of the Alesis kit make it hard to look back at the Roland, even though I know the Roland sounds better. I did get a 3 year warranty on the kit though, so we will see if I will ever need to use it.
Hey, how is the Alesis working so far? I am about to decide Roland TD-17KV or Alesis DM10 MKII PRO. These are same price in my country, but I found a lot of complains about Alesis on the internet. Would you still recommend them. Note: I am a bit heavy hitter... :D
thank you so much man for this video! now I know what to get. I would've never thought the size of the snare...but yeah that would for sure make a difference. time to save up some money lol
Been watching a lot of your videos. Thanks for the time you put into them. I recently bought a Roland TD-1MK set and tried like hell to make it work with Superior Drummer 3, but finally gave up. I'm somewhat tech savvy but was completely overwhelmed by SD3. I've ordered a TD-17 module (I realize I should've bought the TD-17 set instead, almost same price after spec'd out) but I wanted to ask about the bizarre world of MIDI, samples, DAW's, VST's, etc. All I want to do is play along with various artists on drum presets that sound like the artists in the video, or close to it. I don't think I'll ever get into recording/mixing, etc. What is the simplest and cheapest way to create drum presets for playing along with videos?
Congratulations, Is it possible to play the td17kv with the brushes? Or is there a sound already programmed in the control unit that allows you to get the sound of the brushes playing with the sticks? Thank you
Not sure if you are still looking for an answer, but if you play an electronic drum kit with brushes, it will probably give your hits a lower velocity, so all the sounds will be quieter, but you probably won't hear the characteristic brush sound unless you have a sound programmed for that. I don't know if this kit includes that. According to the video, there is a way to put your own sounds on the module.
My reason to get this set would be the sound and playability - i don't need any extra beyond this. Just one question cos i still wish it was more portable. Since the KV does not come standard with a rack, can the KV be set up on the MDS-TDKP1 rack? That to me would be - affordability, portability and incredibility combined!
Meanwhile am still tossing between this and the Alesis Crimson (not the II, I don't like the "red lights" vs the blue on version I and don't need the extra crash cymbal), If I can't get the KV anymore portable (see above). Would appreciate feedback, granted that sound is a subjective thing.
Great video with excellent tips, once again, thanks! The only issue I have with the drum module is with recording. I havent been able to find a kick level so that there is no distortion. It spoils the overall effect of my recordings. Have you found this is an issue?
Since Roland, Alesis and other brands in the Electronic Drum industry are releasing new drumsets, I think right now is the time for Yamaha to release a new line of drumsets with new and advanced technology and new and better sounds. Maybe you should make a video about what Yamaha's next move might be. Btw, nice video as always Justin
John Falcone I sold my TD11K for it, mainly because of the all mesh configuration and pad sizes for the Alesis, which, certainly delivered. For me though, what moved me to sell it was the sounds and module.
There were some good sounds in there but IMO you really have to dig and take your time to configure good all around sounding kits. With Roland, it was simply plug and play and the kits/sounds...at least for me, were outstanding with my TD11. I can't wait to get the all mesh TD17. I took a risk with the Alesis, just didn't deliver for me.
I agree with the setup and digging, Roland works great out of the box. Took me a while to get the triggers and sets the way I like. Good luck with the KVX. I'm still on the fence, I don't think I'm returning the DM10 yet.
What about the most important aspect - machine gunning ? My impression so far is that on one hand it seems to have improved over any previous Roland module, on the other hand it still seems to be noticable. What's your take on that ?
Great video and channel! I just got a new pdx-12 snare pad as an upgrade from my pdx-8 and I noticed that I have to hit the 12 much harder than the 8 to get the same sound. My kid thinks it sounds different too. We went back and forth a few times to confirm. Do you think I got a defective 12 or it’s just the way it is. I have no problem whacking the snare as I hit heavy but just want to be sure the 12 is not defective. This is with the td-1dmk kit which came with the 8 as the snare. Thanks!
I will go for kvx version. I was waiting for a replacement of td-11 from roland and finally they did it. I didn't want to buy Alesis, i don't trust it, yamaha is as expensive as roland. I didn't have enough cash for td-25 kv and i didn't like td-11 kv because of its tiny tom pads. Finally Roland filled the gap. This set sits in a good point in terms of price and quality.
funny enough, for me it was between the alesis command mesh and the roland TD17KV. but after watching this video i realized those drum sets are not in the same price range. I just want my next kit to be all mesh. but after watching this video and hearing you say the 17KV is better than the DM10 (your opinion) im pretty sure im gonna go with this drumset! im a very picky guy and i care alot about quality. and after watching pretty much every video you made of any alesis kits and most of the roland kit videos. i think i should get a Roland. im not in a band but i play a ton of drums! and im one of the guys that doesnt wanna buy another drumset for a long time. ive owned the same yamaha dtx 450 for 10 years. my 1st electric kit haha i think its time for an upgrade. but im in canada so the td17kv is $1700
65 I just want a solid electronic set for recording pop rock records only. I’m deciding between Rolland td17kvxs or tdk25kv or Alesis strike pro kit. I’m leaning towards Alesis. Can you please advise? I want to use trigger 2 samples though for the most part instead of module sounds. Thank you.
Excellent review and demo Justin, but does someone kill a puppy every time you mention Yamaha? The DTX 582K is an option for roughly the same cost, despite the lack of bluetooth connectivity. How does it stack up against the Roland? There is no way I'd touch Alesis.. I teach someone who owns an entry level model and it was awful even before the module failed permanently...
Hi Justin, iam one of your viewer from indonesia. Thanks for all of your video especially for TD17 series. Awesome! And finally i decided to buy TD17KV. But unfortunately this version came as TD17KVL (w/o bluetooth) with the same price (1200$) is it still worth to buy? Hopefully you can reply my question.
In your reviews of the TD-17 and more specifically the PDX-12 Snare pad, you mention what a great pad it is. Maybe I've missed it in your videos, or maybe it hasn't been mentioned yet. but how was it's cross sticking/rimshotting characteristics? Being a side mounted trigger, does that have an affect on the aforementioned techniques? Additionally, I've mentioned wanting to possibly use the TD-17 Module as an basis to build an upgrade pack around. That being said, being as the TD-17 uses the snake instead of 1/4" instrument cables, how would one go about that? I there some way to adapt to the 1/4" cables? Justin, I need your help bro!!!
One thing I'm not sure about, and maybe you can help me, I know you can hook up a computer or use an SD card to bring your samples to the module, but if I have samples on my phone, could I use the Bluetooth connectivity to upload them?
YES. You can stream audio to the module via Bluetooth and record it directly in the TD-17 by pressing record. You can even play along and record your playing at the same time! You then export onto SD Card as WAV files and then import into user memory for triggering or playing from the song player. So yes you effectively can without a laptop!
I have a chance to get a PD-125BK at a super price and wanted to know if that pad is that much better than the PDX-12 these kits come with. I have the kit on order from Sweetwater and am already itching to upgrade some stuff but not if it's a sideways move. I did order the 13R for the ride already - stupid Roland.
I got the TD-17KVX Electronics all factory sealed in box on auction for $523.00, then bought upgrade stands on eBay for another $180.00 all said and done got a new set for a little over $700.00 I am not so much of an electronic set fan myself but I think it was hard to pass even this middle of the line set for those prices! the upgraded stand I picked is the MDS-STD which is for the TD-25, instead of the narrow one for this set, which I consider really ugly and awkward with those straight cymbals stands; now I am shopping for a monitor but everything out there seems too pricy and deceiving as far as wattage is concerned. I never really cared about Roland up until now because of the attractive price on this set new in box; I could have used my gibraltar hardware to mount it but the gap in the middle bar would not make it look very nice me thinks, so...that is that!
I got a Td25kv recently and they gave me the Td17 drum rack with it. Everything mounted fine but am I taking a loss as far as length or anything? Any input is appreciated!
Hey Justin!i have a Yamaha DTX 430 k I was 1.wondering how to update your module to use the app. And 2. If you are able to upgrade things like cymbals. It would really help if you could tell me of show me where to find out.
Hello justin. I just purchased my td17kv and i want to record it to my computer. Could you suggest an easier way to record it directly to my computer ? There is an existing port for recording and i think there are latency issues there. Thanks
I was looking at the TD-17 KVX for maybe a new kit. I’m not sure where to go. I have a TD-6V kit with all mesh pads. The module has 1024 sounds. Not sure if that’s overkill. Would buying the TD-17KVX be a downgrade technically? Should I just look at saving for a TD-30 kit? Or keep the 6V and maybe upgrade the kick and hi-hat? I’m not sure what the best next step is.

Thats basically what I was planning on doing. He says the kit was 1600 with the highhat stand in his impressions of the kvx. But its 1700 and with no high hat stand... I'm a begginer so I'm planning on getting the kv and buy the 3 zone cymbal on the side as well. How much did you end up spending on all of it? Guitar Center reps keep saying itll make more sense to go with kvx over kv so you don't have to upgrade later.
I discovered this channel last night and I was blown away! Congratulations because this is without a doubt the best e-drums channel I've watched in UA-cam by far!
That being said, could you or the rest of the users help me, please? :D
This year is my 10th anniversary as an e-drummer and I feel that my Yamaha DTXplorer has served me fantastically but it's time to get a new and better kit. I was between these two options until I watched this amazing TD17KV review and I would like to know your opinion:
-Alesis Crimson II Mesh Kit (It's the cheapest, but as far as I know, the pads break easily and It's not very durable).
I got a great deal on all of those backup items. I bought them here and there, whenever I seen a Great Deal.
I just bought one yesterday! Need to find time to assemble it now! Great videos Justin!
@@drumsonly44 thanks for commenting and sharing. Glad it is working better for you. I may use one of those softwares in the future.
Paused the video at 1:20 because someone talked to me... Somebody should make a meme out of this screenshot 😂
😂😂😂
65 Drums P.S. Excellent video, as always 👍
The best thing about this kit is the cymbal sounds I think. Not 100% convinced on the actual drum sounds yet. Still machine gunning toms and although the snare sounds good... doesn't sound like a real sample of a drum. Great kit for the money though.
This was great. I’m a guitarist looking to get into drumming. Thanks Mate
Another awesome review. Pretty sure I've watched the entire catalogue at this point lol.
another great first impressions, Justin
Thanks John!
4:47 I really love non hotspot pads
Great review as always Justin. You really go deep about it.Thank You !
Thanks Mickey! I wanted to go though everything :)
i was sold on the td-17kvx, problem is its 1800$(not 1599.99) everywhere i look and no boom stands, what happened?
having owned the dm10mkII pro briefly I would take the TD17KV any day of the week and twice on sundays. I'm not even a huge fan of the TD17 but the DM10mkII pro was a fail.
Really? What happened with the DM10-MKII?
Great review. Thank you for posting this.
I'd buy the Roland. The pads won't break overnight.
And it sounds better than the DM10 II
Great video. I wish you can go into the layering and importing sounds further next. For me the comparison is against the Alesis Strike Pro (price is no issue as I would be one drum set for life) and if you compare the two later that would be awesome too.
Great job on the analysis dude!
I m excited for td17kvx first impression
That third kit sounded like someone sampled the Metallica St Anger kit... Not sure why anyone would do that.
thunderfoot11 Nah man st anger ls a metal pan with 10 pieces of paper over lt kinda sound
the only thing I don't like about the module itself is it only has a stereo output. if it had at least two more outputs so you could separate out the kit in a live situation say Channel 1 kick, Channel 2 snare, channel 3 toms, Channel 4 cymbals. Other than that, I like the kit. I think the sounds are really really good
This is definitely the best drumset at the price point. All depends what features people are after though. To me this is more interesting than the 25 for sure
Nope it's not
I bought the Alesis DM10 MK2 Pro w/ mesh heads last week and I don't think I will trade it in for a TD17kv/x.
Im also looking at the DM10 MKII Pro and td-17 KVS
thank you so much man for this video! now I know what to get. I would've never thought the size of the snare...but yeah that would for sure make a difference. time to save up some money lol
Honestly, is there a real difference between the td-17KL and the td-17KV ? Which one would you buy ? Does the TD-17KV deserve the 200 extra bucks ?
That Cy5 is also on the mid-range version of the TD-9 from awhile back.
Congratulations,
Is it possible to play the td17kv with the brushes?
Or is there a sound already programmed in the control unit that allows you to get the sound of the brushes playing with the sticks?
Thank you
Not sure if you are still looking for an answer, but if you play an electronic drum kit with brushes, it will probably give your hits a lower velocity, so all the sounds will be quieter, but you probably won't hear the characteristic brush sound unless you have a sound programmed for that. I don't know if this kit includes that. According to the video, there is a way to put your own sounds on the module.
Grazie
Oh man... that lovely snare pad!
Does td 17kv have cowbell?
Now that's a good starter kit.
I really agree, I'd love to see some new yamaha drumsets!
+65 Drums (Justin Greenawalt) Imma work on some concept art
Really glad I sold my Alesis DM10 MK11 Pro, this will be my next kit.
What didn't you like about it?
John Falcone Cool man, take care 🤘
I want to know only one thing: can the bass pad accommodate 2 beaters.
Yup
65 Drums hooray!!
Looking at this as my 1st e-kit. Looks like a winner but a question... Can it be set up comfortable for a lefty or even open handed setup?
This is going to be my birthday present to myself this a September
That's a sweet birthday present
just picked one up with a Tama iron cobra double kick , keen as to try it out
Are you able to buy and use a cymbal pad that's got the 3 zones for a bell on this?
Yes. The Roland CY-13R has 3 zones and will work with this kit if I'm not mistaken.
So what’s the big difference the Td17kv and kvx?
Is it easy to ADD the CY-13R ride cymbal? without sacrificing the CY-8?
Can you cross stick on the snare for reggae? Can you record yourself drumming to your songs on your mp3 and upload it back to mp3 or computer?
Hey from France here !
Can we use a double pedal on this model ?
Thanks for the video !
Thanks
Why doesn’t mine come with the hi hat metal piece on top...? Instead they gave me that plastic screw on thing...?
What's the difference between the TD-17KV and the TD-17KV-S ?
Roland probably cause it's a beautiful peace of drum kit
Should I buy the Roland td-17KVX or the Alesis Strike (Not the pro just the regular $1700 one)?
Sorry you can’t load in samples that way :/
How do you record the drum kit as your playing because you can’t use a loud speaker cause there’s other people in their????
If I wanted to add the CY-13r and another PDX8 as a 4th tom, do I just plug them into Crash 2 and Aux in the back of the drum module?
What kind of speaker/amp do you use on these.
It would really help if you could tell me of show me where to find out.
how does this selection of sounds overlap with the other Roland modules?
Hello justin. I just purchased my td17kv and i want to record it to my computer. Could you suggest an easier way to record it directly to my computer ? There is an existing port for recording and i think there are latency issues there. Thanks
Any thoughts on swapping out the TD-25KV snare Pdx-100 for the PDX-12? Not sure how they compare in feel and playability
i could put a extra cy13r in the module?
Hi Justin... one question maybe you will know the answer. Hi-Hat VH 10 work on TD11 Roland module???
yes.
Is it possible to buy this and then add more components to make it the 17KVX?
Is it worth it to buy a three trigger roland ride for it? To make up for it
How portable? Kind of thing you could take to practice once or twice a week?
I was looking at the TD-17 KVX for maybe a new kit. I’m not sure where to go. I have a TD-6V kit with all mesh pads. The module has 1024 sounds. Not sure if that’s overkill. Would buying the TD-17KVX be a downgrade technically? Should I just look at saving for a TD-30 kit? Or keep the 6V and maybe upgrade the kick and hi-hat? I’m not sure what the best next step is.
