    First day in Japan and I went to Asakusa in Tokyo! There was a shop renting really cheap kimonos and I went to try it out! The lady was very fast to help me put it on, and styled my hair beautifully too. The steps she used was the same as this video! If possible, I would definitely recommend trying out kimonons in Asakusa or Kyoto, but make sure to make reservations in advance!

    This really blew my mind. I've been eyeing a specific kimono I fell in love with & wondered what else I would need to wear it properly- wow. I honestly lost track of how many things were tied around the underwire/waist. Getting dressed in America is generally a very simple, lazy endeavor so this was very interesting to watch. Absolutely perfect Kitsuke. Not many people know that you can put a Nagajuban on top of a sosoyoke and hada juban in winter if it is particularly cold. Sure this is not going to be convenient to walk with it but you will be warm. And second, if you live in a rainy or snowy area you indeed raise the hem of the Kimono higher than usually to protect the kimono from dirt and to prevent it from getting wet and you wear a yukimichi over it to protect it.
    That's a really smart december Kitsuke.

    Just last week I bought two Kimono, two Obi and other stuff for it on a small market at Hanazono Shrine in Shinjuku. The Kimono were only ¥3.000 each and the Obi ¥1.000 each and everything in good condition, so I think (or hope) it was a good deal, regarding the prices in Kimono Stores. Sadly they are both Kurotomesode, so they are not really made for me (a teenager) and I will probably not be able to wear them in Japan or around people with Kimono knowledge, but I just had to buy them and I love black Kimono and am still very happy about them!

    • @PaprikaGirl_JP
      @PaprikaGirl_JP  3 роки тому

      There are many kinds of obi to choose from, but the breadth of your thumb to the tip of your pinky when your hand is stretched out is the best way to gage what suits you. You can choose thinner or thicker breadth based on your personal choice.
      Some obi (especially older ones) are shorter than others. While a good length to start with is about 3 meters, most of mine are 4 meters in length. You can choose the style of tying your obi to match the length, too.

    • @PaprikaGirl_JP

      Kimono are not meant to be bought and discarded the way that pret-a-porte clothes are today - they are meant to be used over a couple generations, so the size of the wearer would vary from person to person. For this reason, the fabric (tanmono) isn't cut to size, but instead folded inwards and upwards. To have excess fabric was considered a slight bit luxurious, too. Only dancers and non-laborers would have such extended pieces way back in the day (150 year ago or more), so often average kimonos were too short to have the extra folds and fabric once they had been passed on to the next generation, which would've gotten bigger.
      Tanmono in general have a very specific width, although this has gotten wider as the generations have grown larger. But from a western perspective, even the tanmono are too narrow to accommodate most of us - they are made for petit ladies even today.

    Hello, I got a question! It would be really nice if someone would answer me. Is it disrespectful to wear „heavy“ makeup? Like thick eyeliner and lashes, would that be considered as disrespectful to the culture and it’s more required to wear a natural look?

    • @sparrow8072
      @sparrow8072 3 роки тому +1

      Heavy makeup is pretty common with kimono for ageha (gyaru) style, though some girls wear heavier makeup with furisode in general. If you search for “sweet angel 振袖” you can see what I mean by ageha style.

    • @PaprikaGirl_JP
      @PaprikaGirl_JP  3 роки тому +1

      No, not at all. TPO is important (so, heavy makeup is not good for tea ceremony, for example), but everday kimono-wearers can wear whatever makeup and accessories they want. Enjoy it the way you want to! Kimono are not ceremonial garments - they are meant for daily wear. There is no disrespect to worry about.

      It's rare to find a whole set. Just like a person would buy jeans, T-shirts, underwear, bras, socks and jacket separately, Japanese clothing items are sold separately, too.
      When you're in Japan, go to a kimono shop, or to a second-hand kimono shop in places like Asakusa.
      That said, these days you can buy yukata sets online for pretty cheap. Yukata are summer festival wear, much easier to put on, since they're what used to be pajamas! Use a page translator to brows sites like Amazon Japan and Rakuten to find sets you like.

      @@GameFuMaster In this day and age, it's acceptable to run around in tank tops, flip flops and shorts. But at the time this was the main type of garment, tank tops and shorts would have been considered underwear, even in the west. It has only been since the proliferation of cheap pret-a-porte fashion that people take no care to their appearance, and choose the casual and quick over the well-kempt.
      But isn't it nice when you see a lady dressed up in a beautiful outfit, with her makeup and hair done? Isn't it inspiring to see a man dressed well, looking like a million dollars, clean and cool? It takes time to look nice.
      It makes the environment around that good-looking person look even classier and better, just to have him be there.
      So the question is ultimately this - a person can choose the quick and the sloppy, or they can choose the time-taking but classy.
      Both are acceptable, but how they make both the wearer and the atmosphere change makes all the difference.
