      @@CandiOsaka Common dress always has some measure of practicality in mind. More ostentatious styles of kimono, like for oiran and nobility, were designed with the necessity of help in mind; however, in a time when most people (i.e.: lower classes) did not have servants or necessarily anyone else capable of or willing to lend a hand, a strict two-person system doesn't work.

    I think just the sheer task of putting on a kimono each morning preps a person for productivity. If I put all that work into putting on my clothes every day I would be so diligent and productive throughout the rest of the day!

    Very cool! I would love to see also what you call each piece you put on, and how you care for these elegant pieces, like how you clean them. Thank you for your videos, I really enjoy them! Sutan is so cute! What age can she wear Kimono?

    • @bluecupcake7401
      @bluecupcake7401 4 роки тому +24

      I don't know what's the earliest age babies can wear a kimono, but Japanese people have a tradition called 'shichigosan' where they dress up children in traditional clothes at the age of 3, 5 and 7.

    • @Satopi3104
      @Satopi3104 4 роки тому +36

      Nowadays most people get their kimono professionally cleaned by a kimono specialized cleaner. The traditional way is to undo all the seams in a kimono and return the kimono into its horizontal pieces of silk and wash those and resow it but you can also do an abbreviated wash where the kimono is not taken apart. If it’s a cotton or wool kimono you an easily wash at home but silk shrinks/stains when it gets wet so it needs to be handled more carefully. Obi are not washed. Hope that answers your question.

    • @bobo32591
      @bobo32591 3 роки тому +2

      Yes, I would also like to know the Japanese and English name for each piece too.
      For the caring, I think they will need to send out the cloths to dry cleaning store. It would be great to know more!

    • @annamelendez8276
      @annamelendez8276 3 роки тому +8

      This comment was almost a year ago but in case someone still wonders about the names of each piece:
      [disclaimer I am just an enthusiast so I might be wrong. Also, many pieces can have more than one name!]
      The underkimono is called nagajuban. The kimono itself is called Kimono and in this case it's an Iromuji (solid color). The ties that are used to close the kimono are called koshihimo (the one that ties at the waist/hips) and munahimo (the one that ties under the chest). I am not sure what the name of the tie with the square cloth at the back is but it might be a special type of Datejime. The wide pink piece that covers the chest is called obita. The kimono belt is called obi and in this case it's a type of Nagoya obi. The cord that holds the obi is called obijime. The "pillowy-thingie" used to shape the knot is called obimakura. The scarf that covers the obimakura is called obiage. Also, the type of knot she did is called Taiko musubi. I think that's all!
      As for cleaning: It highly depends on the type of kimono. Cotton or Polyester modern kimonos you can throw in the wash and they will be fine but silk kimonos need to be send to a professional. Also, have in mind that kimono is not worn directly over the skin and therefore doesn't need to be wash regularly . Instead, after wearing it just needs to be hanged in a well ventilated area overnight (or for a week if you are as lazy as I am). For more info on this topic in particular, I highly recommend watching Billy Matsunaga's video here in youtube called "The kimono cleaning guide".

      @@naritruwireve1381 yes it’s super hot in a Kimono in the summer which is why there is a Yukata which is similar shape but much thinner material. Even though not many women wear Kimonos anymore there are many women that wear A Yukata in the summer for festivals and fireworks shows
      It’s been so modernized that you can get a pretty cheap Yukata kit. It comes with everything you need, some even come with wooden sandals as well. I have a couple, I was born in Japan and raised from 5 years old in the States by my Japanese parents and I own 3 sets. They all have the obi (belt like material around the waist and a bow that has a metal piece so you can just tuck that piece in the back of the obi so you don’t have to do all that work Moe did in her video to make the back part beautiful ☺️

    This is so amazing and educational! I’m Japanese born in Japan but raised in the US from 5 years old. My mom is from Kyoto. She can put on her own Kimono but I have only wore a Kimono 2 times in my life. Even Japanese that are born and raised in Japan don’t have the knowledge and skill to put on their own Kimono these days. Many will hire someone like Moe to put it on them plus Kimonos are so expensive which is why In her moving video they were being very very gentle with it. Again most will rent a Kimono for an occasion. It is very hot in the summer so we wear a Yukata which is similar shape but much thinner. It’s easier to wear a Yukata since there is only 1 layer and these days they sell Yukata Kits that come with everything you need and some include wooden sandals too. Most of the cheap kits come with a faux obi (waist band) with a faux bow that is a fake bow that looks like it was made with the obi but it will have a metal piece on it so you can just stick it in your waist band in the back to make it look like you spent the time to put it on and tied it. Younger girls may have never worn a Kimono but Yukata is worn at summer festivals and firework shows.
    Moe does a beautiful job! I used to love seeing my mom’s Kimonos when I was growing up.

    Moe, thank you so much for all your hard work. All your kimonos are always so beautiful. You have such a kind heart and beautiful soul.
    I would love for you to make a video about your time as a Geisha. Things like how you became interested in it, the training process, and just all round Geisha history. It would be very interesting! 💜

    This is so great! I would love to see makeup and facial items you use. I've loved the culture of Japan since I was a teen. I hope to go there soon!! And the kimono is beautiful. I would be worried that i would mess it up!!!
