Driven the DSG one couple of months ago. I.m.h.o. I couldn't think of a better car for everyday use, than this car. Man it is so blistering fast, and light feeling, that I don't want anything else, than a VW Golf GTI 7. It's just the car that you really NEED. Not so much a car that does 1 thing really properly, it's just the whole package. Even with 4 people in it, it is so damn fast. It's like having a big strong dad that lifts you up on his neck as a little kid, and he's like owning everybody with coolness. It makes you feel like the king of the road.
Fucus ST doesnt do anything better than the GTI except top speed...and even then its only because the GTI is governed...remove the governor and that advantage is gone also
Always thought that the GTI had become a little too safe & predictable until I drove a new one yesterday. Honestly one of the most fun cars I've ever driven.
6.4 seconds is incredibly fast and it feels it when your in a car doing sub 7s to 60 but people sadly forget it thanks to these modern sub 4 second supercars
I was in the market for an R version of the Golf (to replace my beastly but impractical 16 Camaro SS) until a salesman that owned a MK7 GTI let take me a ride in his car. Little did I know he had a JB-1 installed in his car...but needless to say i was sold considering that the Golf GTI ( with a JB-1)could pace a stock R in everything but a "dig" race....and do it for about $6K less with lower insurance premiums and get better gas mileage. The MK7 GTI is the best all around car i have driven in my 25+ years of driving. Its the only car to have if you are going to own only 1 car at a time
elukok not available in the states. Also it's more focused on performance. Doesn't quite have that upscale luxury vibe of the VW. What makes the Mk7 so great is that it does everything equally well, whether it's commuting in heavy traffic or carving up twisty roads.
Sorry, I'll take the way better looking and performing Focus ST. The new 2015 looks even better than the 2013-2014 models... This is the most boring looking car, I've ever seen... I have a test drive in Orlando this December since that's when the performance edition comes to the states. I'm going to test drive this, ST, wrx, and new 2015 Mustang GT. Looking to spend 30-40K and I want exciting looking, feeling, and performing. I never trust magazine or Internet opinions so driving them is the only way to find out which one makes you SMILE the most!
LJ Balongue you won't be test driving a PP GTI in the states in December, it's looking like delivery will be in January sometime. As for the Ford looking better, I think you are out of your mind. Luckily we are all allowed to have our opinions and you can go buy the ford.
I must add, after having owned the MKVI GTI for 14 months now, there are moments when I'd like RWD or AWD, or a bit more grunt in 3rd and 4th on the straights, but then I find a twisty road and remember that honestly I'm beating or holding ground with S2000's, Evo's, WRX's, and BRZ's, all while hauling along my camera equipment and travel gear, at 32mpg. Like he said, maybe she doesn't score a 10/10 in any category (save the 'makes sense to buy one'), but solid 8's all around ladies & gents. I like her more every day ;-)
This is the first Evo review vid I’ve ever seen,.. nice 👍🏾 I own a 2020 MK 7.5 at 50 and love it’s practicality and fun factor,... just the right amount of sporty look not boy racer looking
I was looking at compact SUVs but the GTI can carry just about as much cargo, and you can take it to the track as well. It's like a sports car/track car/drag car/SUV in disguise.
Great review again. I have a mk5 GTi and its been one of the best cars I have owned - good performance and good practically - its all the car you with ever need. I know where most of this was filmed. Felmersham is very local to me and I know where that Waitrose is. Great roads around here….

John Ye The M235 starts at $46k, the GTI starts at around $25k. I think 32k for the GTI would be a top end one. I also wish they sold the M135i at a good price in the US
Nice review and nice car, but I'd still go for the R version in 3 door with DSG in blue for my needs !!! The only thing I didn't like about the car was the GTi badge on the left of the front grill, would look better on the right, aesthetically speaking !!!

I like the mk7 is a much needed step up but the mk4 was the same back in its day. I have a old GTI mk3 and also mk4 1.8T jetta and mk4 R32, Iv drivin a mk5 and 6 not a mk7 yet! I wouldn't call the mk4 junk, it was much better then mk3 rust buckets it replaced and also the competing cars. I still to this day I see more Mk4s on the road then any other vw so that says something.
I've always hated the golf gti… but I'm now seriously considering one because it's the only hot hatch that can actually tow anything. And no... not a bloody caravan... a motocross bike.
The non GTI GTIs. Basically every car was a GTI in the MK4 range as they could charge more money for them then. The good ones were the GTI Turbos which had far more character.
Looks alot better than the mk6 Just dosnt have the performance as the vxr and seat tough competition especially from the seat since its vw owned quality in an out
I´m not an Opel (Vaxhaul) fan at all, but I see several VXR´s on the roads lately and for exterior design in this segment the 2 door VXR simply looks fantastic IMO - one needs a Sirocco on nice rims to match it.
Extremely lazy engine in mid range. Friend of my drives it. In 6th with 100km/h (62mp/h) my chipped Bravo 1.4 T-jet (185hp 300nm) pulls 3/4 carlenghts away. At 190km/h the cars are head to head again. I like the direct and lively t-jet more. But above 200km/h the Gti 7 is seriously quick.
Hmmm well I don´t know about the Value for money, but as far as looks and pure sporting dynamics the Leon is a fresher proposition - I would have a Leon over the GTI, but perhaps I would regret it when reselling.
QullVideo Well, both cars are fun so your point is...? Value for money is in everything. The Golf GTI costs about 10k euros more than the Leon with similar spec while being slower. You wouldn't find the latter to be better value for money?
Of course the SEAT is better value for money, by definition. But when you're spending that much money then you have to choose the car that you yourself like. Yes take in all reviews and opinions but in the end go with what you want based on what you need. There's no point saving €10,000 on the Cupra if you prefer the Golf GTI (for example) if that is the car you want.
going back to your original comment - I think understated can be quite cool sometimes. I'm looking to buy an Audi S4 avant which I will debadge and place a tdi one on the boot ;) should piss off a few type r drivers haha
intranix The mk5 only had 200 hp. the 180 was a good amount back in 2002 when they came out with the awp 1.8T motor and with a easy tune you were over 220.
IDannyxss its not about the power, the mk5 had laser welded chassis which was a lot stiffer than the mk4 and therefore actually felt like a hot hatch, the mk4 was underpowered and crap at cornering
Vic Thaking I would disagree, I was at a track day with a brand new mk7 GTI and other cars like supercharged FRS and bwm z4 M and my R32 was killing them everywhere, I was talking to the driver of the mk7 and he said he couldn't understand how much faster my 10 year old car was in the corners and on the straight
Just look at it. It (even worse the Mk3) was boring. The R32 was cool though the only reason it'd be the Mk7 on a track both being stock is the driver.
So, after so many gens, Golf GTi MK7 is a nice all-around priced on a premium. Total failure for a GTi IMO. For a family car, nice though. GTi must be emotional in a way. Focus, Megane, Leon are proper GTis.
Kiwi living in Australia here... It's a back road, not a main road, usually runs along side or near "A" roads (main roads) I'm guessing... Usually rougher due to being less travelled, and may contain more corners and less traffic. Just a guess.
bummaggots I think I know what it is and I assumed B maybe stood for back road, but it always annoys me when people say something to an international audience without realising they may not know what it means exactly.
They are British, and are a British magazine. If you don't know what something means, google it. People don't have to cater to an "international" audience (by which I assume you mean American). Regardless these guys do a great job of catering to all audiences.
bummaggots Nope, I'm sure their youtube analytics tell them how international their audience is therefore they absolutely need to cater towards it, just like how british cars cater to non brits, british reviews need to do the same.
Ok one minute in I lost interest. See tons of them around, quintessentially bland. Owned a mk5, looked awesome back in 06. Vw's world is too sensible, sales at the expense of all else.
I used to really like Golf GTi's. Then the mk2 came out and it was ok. Then the mk3 came out and it wasn't great. Then mk4 - rubbish. mk5 - where the mk4 really should have been. the 6 and 7 are just minor developments of the 5. This car would have been great 10+ years ago but things have moved on. All the other hatches are making late 200's and more hp while this (even with the performance pack which hikes it's price even more) is still at the power levels of cars from 2 generations age (and more). One of the most overrated cars in the history of the car. Makes you wonder how much of the VW R+D budget actually goes on R+D. It would probably be cheaper to pay journo's or lend them cars - maybe even promise them a go in the new Veyron/etc if the Golf is great again. I'm so sick of seeing reviews on GTi's that look more like adverts. Then you go and drive one and it's really nothing special. It might play the averages but all the other hatches do too. They just have extra party pieces on top.
hung huge It is often noted that this car is making more power than VW states - with dyno results showing up to 260+ hp accounting a 15% drivetrain loss.

Maybe so, but then the Focus ST is better, even my Fiesta ST with the Mountune stage 1 is faster than a mk7 gti
neil1jnr speed isnt everything. As much as I like the Ford, I would always choose the vw. It's just a personal thing!

Yes there is. Seat leon cupra. Same platform, same engine, a little bit cheaper, little more stylish, the same vw tech and build quality.

the golf 7 r 400 came out (400hp)

Nice review, always respected the gti, it truly is the best all round hot hatch
With a better downpipe, a metal catalyst, a bigger intercooler and an ECU tune, this engine can easily keep the torque up to the redline and easily make over 300HP. For about 5000€. And due to the thermal relief due to the better downpipe and intercooler, without losing any measurable durability and reliability.
It's already way overpriced for what it is so adding another 5000eur would make it just silly.
Try $699 here in the US. 312 HP 380 Lb/Tq.

IMO the mk5 is the best Golf out there. I mean the GTI, the R and even GT Sport series were pretty cool.
Off the top of my head, is this the slowest HH now? In the C-Segment of course, just trying to think of a slower, in production, HH..?
Possibly, but numbers don't mean everything. In fact, thy only mean one thing. A cool thing, but one thing nonetheless
How was the steering?
Henry's summary is correct, great average car. It doesn't do anything great, but it does everything well!

Hmmm well I don´t know about the Value for money, but as far as looks and pure sporting dynamics the Leon is a fresher proposition - I would have a Leon over the GTI, but perhaps I would regret it when reselling.
HesteBremse No point in thinking how much the car will get you when you resell it. You haven't even bought it yet :D
You buy a 1 litre city car if you want value for money. You buy a 200+ horse power car for fun.
On the limit at 3:21 and this bloke has no effect on the power to weight ratio. He's that thin he only needs one eye!
1st? Possibly? Oh yeah...cool car.
Focus ST is enought to beat the s**t out of it.
Bu zz yeah if you want to drive a ford.....
of course. Ford is 100 times better than this Audi wannabe german piece of shit.
Ben Dover Good luck, you will need it with your passat.
Bu zz i don't own a passat...
Bu zz I hope you realize that VW owns Audi....
Almost fell asleep looking at it
I almost fell asleep watching you try to afford this
stance autos
and that's a good thing?
stance autos sounds like you bought one and you are angry your boyfriend's Hyundai gets more attention - lol
going back to your original comment - I think understated can be quite cool sometimes. I'm looking to buy an Audi S4 avant which I will debadge and place a tdi one on the boot ;) should piss off a few type r drivers haha
compared to?
Soberbo!
What else.....
lol Did he really just call the MK4 a...Travesty?....Wow
The MK4 GTI was a travesty.
0-60 is 5,8 sec...bad drivers skills maybe? :P
Leon Cupra.
Front end is boring
Why was the 4th generation of Golf GTI a 'travesty'?
intranix The mk5 only had 200 hp. the 180 was a good amount back in 2002 when they came out with the awp 1.8T motor and with a easy tune you were over 220.
IDannyxss you have a mk4 golf with 4 wheel drive and 240+ bhp, nothing like a standard gti
So, after so many gens, Golf GTi MK7 is a nice all-around priced on a premium. Total failure for a GTi IMO. For a family car, nice though. GTi must be emotional in a way. Focus, Megane, Leon are proper GTis.
dude needs to eat, he looks like a hungry skeleton
Brits keep saying 'B road' like anyone else of the UK recognises what it means...
They can do what they want! It's not made specially for you mate.
Ok one minute in I lost interest. See tons of them around, quintessentially bland. Owned a mk5, looked awesome back in 06. Vw's world is too sensible, sales at the expense of all else.
Car is probably is junked by now their poorly constructed are gti
Golf drivers always tailgating , is it because the drivers somehow feel their car is faster ?
No, they just like Anal!
mazdaman1980 it's mostly women !
What a Fucking boring car, and it way to sensible.. Give me a Megane 250 or a Focus st any day..Cheaper as well
Eh. The competition has far surpassed this. And now that the north american models are made in Mexico, no thanks!!!!!!!
not real GTI to big to heavy .
What's the deal with those seats? They are hideous.
Your face is hideous
Well doesn't matter my comment got more likes than yours so in this comment section more people bash on you than me. (:
Driving a bit fast on public roads aren't we Mr Catchpole? Think of your fellow cyclists out for a spin on a sunny afternoon around that blind bend...
boooooring...GTI is just plain boring...
