1982 Mercedes Benz 500SEL W126 Full Restoration Project
This 1982 Mercedes 500SEL was ordered new from Saudi Arabia but had spent much of its recent life in London.
Our instruction was to fully restore it to exacting specification to the highest possible standard on the basis the vehicle would be returned to Saudi Arabia once finished.
It was crucial this restoration was to be cosmetically flawless but matched with 100% reliability as the vehicle would be driven and used when needed throughout the year.
This particular vehicle when ordered new had every possible extra which made the restoration challenging especially trying to source key components both mechanically and cosmetically.
The family who have owned the vehicle from new realised the importance of originality and areas such as the interior date velour and the complex hydropnuematic suspension had to have immediate attention to ensure the restoration could be successfully completed.
Velour is notoriously difficult to now find, we were able to purchase the correct and original date velour from New Jersey and retrim the entire vehicle this included sourcing the tricky to find ‘hard plastics’ which make up the detail inside any W126.
The hydropneumatic suspension on this W126 was integral to the restoration as there were some parts which were unavailable to be purchased new from Mercedes-Benz, fortunately we have a worldwide network of reliable key suppliers who are able to overhaul the parts which are no longer available.
The restoration was carried out over a 12 month period and a further 2 month shakedown stage to ensure reliability before the vehicle was transported back to Saudi Arabia.
This was one of the most enjoyable restorations we have had carried out in recent times as the build quality of W126 models is of such a high standard it was a pleasure to get the vehicle back to same quality as it looked and drove when it left the factory in 1982.

A huge respect for those enthusiast who are not afraid to do such amazing work
This person is doing God's work!
These cars were made by honest people with morals. Not like now days
1982. people were just as dishonest as they are now. Morality has not changed. Violent crime levels are now half of what they were then so if anything people now have more morals and more honesty. But everyone prefers to look at the past like it was some kind of perfect wonderland. But I was only 15 in 1982. What do I know.
michael pickering you’re correct, people in those days were just as bad. Mercedes however shifted from their focus on reliability to more high tech engineering. Which is why everything breaks down these days.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
People that own cars then were the minority few... Now having more then one car is common, so making money for car companies are the norm. All for profit.
@@michaelpickering3223 You must have never had a childhood 🙄
I can’t imagine the hours and money this took. I have an genuine 82 Mercedes 500SE AMG I have had almost 30 years. I would love to see it get this treatment some day.
Absolutely jawdropping. The W126 chassis Mercedes is one of the best designs of all time.

Makes me feel real old. I bought a 300SD new in 1982 . Wish I still had it.
David Estler at least you had the experience to buy it new. My W126 380SE was a inherited from my Mom. When I was 16.......in the early 2000’s ....just for age reference
MBmann I’m 71. I guess that makes me old. Wife still drives an MB. GL suv. W126 best looking MB sedan ever IMO.

Wow Fantastic work's.
Perfection
I love this ,and I would love to have my prized 1982 300SD run through this process!
I owned a 1982 300SD, one of the strongest, and kindest cars I ever drove.
@@znuh Mine is old faithful, we had a 2010 C300 and a 2000 ML 320 And they both let us down on day and the 300SD saved the day! The C300 has since been totaled and we won't get rid of either MBZ we have now! And I miss my C300 it was fast and economical!
I think the 126 body is the best!
Kijk , hier word ik nou vrolijk van !!! Vakwerk , wat een auto !!
Looks like it was ridden hard and put away wet...still, what a great foundation of a vehicle for a restoration. Definitely worthwhile project. Wish I had one!
Wow just wow
Very good job 👍🏼
My favorite car, my 300SD had over 400,000 miles on it and other than the transmission, was all original. I still believe the turbo diesel to be the best power plant for this amazing cruiser. Loved the video!
Beautiful 😍👍🏽
back when mercedes were REALLY built like freakin' tanks.
Yeah. I have a w204 now. Probably the last of the good ones
@@mbmann3892 wouldn't call it that. It is a very nice car, but from from w126 in terms of build quality. It is simply not necessary to built cars like this anymore, we change them too often and we always want the greatest and newest technology in them, if we spent the same amount of time to engineer a car as they did with w126 or w124 for example, the card would be outdated by the time it hit the market.
TSABRO I disagree . It’s the marketing tactics that force us to buy new cars more often . I along with most people who watch and commented will much rather have cars built like they used to. But now it’s all about volume, selling the most the quickest , just for profit. The love and passion is gone from these cars . Tho I will say I am happy enough with my W204 build quality, think it’s the last of the good ones .
You're basically saying "the car I own is the best" This is the same w204 that needs the whole door trim replaced if the handle cracks where the cable attaches, come on. I've owned and worked on w124, w126, w201, w202, w203, w210 and I can say the w124 is the last of the solid benzes. Others may be reliable, but build quality and longevity is another story
Mike Baz well again. That’s the marketing department saving money instead of creating the tooling for multiple parts on a door . They just make one. But I still believe the Mercedes from the era of mid 2000’s to 2010’s are still the last of we’ll built . Mechanically the W204 is very very reliable.
Well done!
Just an awesome car...
Gorgeous
Incredible work, WOW! Although I understand the desire to keep it the original color, I wish you guys had chosen a dark tone instead; or even the classic Mercedes silver. Almost anything would've looked better than the OEM paint.
Awesome
Best page tnx for every thing🔝🙋♂️🇩🇪⭐
Got myself an old Benz 1983 500 SEL and doing exactly the same style restoration. Can’t wait for final results. It takes a lot of dedication and time let me tell you that:
One of the most beautiful mercedes
Very nice
Perfect
Probaly better then when it came new out of the factory. Out of an era when cars were build to last, instead of nowadays
Nice video I like it👍
Mercedes Benz is my favorit ⭐🇩🇪
Favorit. Skoda Favorit.
Cheers dude ;)
Amazing 👌👌😍😍
Wow 👌
Good old times when the engineers were in charge...

Ashtrays in the backdoors!!! Ah the good old days...
Nice .... was expecting some work for the interior too
Я в восторге, мечтаю и своего Mercedes SPRINTER 1999г так отреставрировать.
Wow!!
Harika olmuş .Araba ne hale geldi
I have a 500SEL, so I'm up on some of the trends--at least in my area. I'm surprised to see this large of a project on a W126. In California (and much of the U.S.), they're they still considered disposable, even if from the smallest damage, high mileage, or even just seat wear. Glad to see one being saved.
Super! And mine would be like this! 👍)
cool 5+++++++ Просто шикарно!
Оргазм для глаз. Обалденно!
WoooooooW 😘😘😘😘
Very good 👏🇧🇷
Excellent, amazing, where did you get the seat covers?
Super
That's what you call attention to detail! Amazing! Looks better than when it was new! I've restored a few of my cars but this is on a different level restoration
huge job - but why making it look like a taxi? "Hell Elfenbein" is the color of german taxis.
More Mercedes Benz pls:D
I have a W123 my dad's car , it needs a restoration just like this one,
