Fun Fact: Panchito Pistolas would become the mascot of the Flying Aztecs, the 201st Fighter Squadron of the Mexican Air Force, which fought alongside American troops in the Pacific front of WW2.
Likewise, thd Brazilian Air Force's 1st Fighter Squadron from the 14th Aviation Group adopted an emblem depicting a Zé-Carioca lookalike( called Zé Gaucho) in a Bombardier's uniform. I have also read about Zé Carioca being depicted in some Brazillian Catalina Bombers during the war.
I'm glad I finally found a video essay talking about the Three Caballeros because despite their cult status as disney characters, we don't see them nearly enough as we should. I've loved these dudes ever since I was a kid Also this video is the first time I'm hearing about the "Duckverse," another rabbit hole for me to fall into
I have to agree with Rosa about Donald's normal 'friends' circle. While the Magnificent minus 4's open is a little extreme, it is a fine representation of the hair trigger abuse Donald gets from those around him. And to see him have a roaring adventure with Jose and Panchito to, as his nephews put it, 'look for his smile' makes this one of my personal favorite Duck comics.
It’s pretty wild that José’s name hasn’t been pronounced correctly in like 60 years (unless it was pronounced correctly in the new Ducktales and I missed it). Also, in an interview with José’s og VA in a radio program in 1945, he mentions the unmade third Cuban-based third package movie which he referred to as “Carnival”, saying he hoped to be in it, but at least he got to play Carioca a couple more times before his death. No one’s been able to fill the shoes left behind by Oliveira and Garay as José and Panchito. Oliveira’s performance was SO charming and he brought a lot of energy to the role, I’ve read that his friends said that he basically WAS Carioca in real life, and Garay had a great singing voice, it makes it hard to listen to later covers of the Three Caballeros song where the VAs for Panchito either struggle with the high notes or sound too stilted (though the VAs for the characters in the new Ducktales are pretty good.)
I've read about that package film! There were some early designs of yet another bird for that specific picture, inspired by Cuba, who had at the time been named "Miguelito Maracas". As far as I can tell, the project was sort of quietly abandoned along with the Good Neighbor program. Some of the ideas for the film did turn into shorts later on (for instance, the concept of Blame it on the Samba was originally proposed for it), along with other shorts like Without You and Two Silhouettes (appeared in Make Mine Music) and Destino which was initially abandoned, but was completed by some Disney Animators in 2003.
they do in fact pronounce his name correctly in the new ducktales show as i believe they got an actual brazilian to voice him i feel like many adaptations dont capture their original personality and charm and have been flanderized but its nice that they reappear now and then wish the 3 caballeros show had gotten another season i quite liked it
José is actually pronounced with a more English sounding J in his earlier incarnations because Portuguese pronunciation of José is like that, but Disney messed it up when they started having José appear again in the 90s.
I grew up in the 90's in Italy and I LOVED The Three Caballeros film, but almost no one seems to remember it! It was so trippy and chaotic, it was great! Thank you for the video (also your Italian pronunciation wasn't that bad!)

Hi! Thank you so much for asking this question because I may sort of have an answer for you? I can't promise this is entirely accurate information, as the only source I have for it is Don Rosa. In what I believe is the Don Rosa Library hardback featuring "The Magnificent Seven (Minus 4) Caballeros" story by Don Rosa, page 173 has the following quote: "During my research I found - somewhere in my collection of vintage Three Caballeros memorabilia - one reference in a promotional pamphlet hat gave Panchito's last name as "Pistoles". This pleased e because t had always vaguely bothered me that Donald Duck and José Carioca both had surnames, but Panchito was just "Panchito." So I added "Pistoles". To my knowledge, this became the only time this lost surname had ever been used anywhere besides that pamphlet. But later I noticed that in reaction to my story, this "Pistoles" surname was now being given to Panchito across the internet in almost all reference works!!!" I think this is the only source *I've* discovered that gives any explanation for Panchito's surname. I do know where he may have seen the surname in the first place though. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
@@lucentleaves omg thank you so much for this!! it's so interesting how that name is so universal now despite barely appearing in print. i would love to see that original pamphlet just out of curiosity... thanks again :)
Just want to clarify an off-hand comment: Ary Barroso's Aquarela do Brasil was popularized by the movie, both in Brazil and abroad, but it was recorded a few years before it was put in the movie and existed quite independently of it. It just wasn't very popular. Apparently Ary Barroso was upset with Villa-Lobos (yes, THAT Villa-Lobos) for not including that song in the top three of that year's Carnaval. (See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aquarela_do_Brasil) The lyrics are about Brazil's beauty and tragedy, at a time when slavery was not a distant memory yet. The version that made it into the Disney movie, naturally, skips the verse about ending racism. It's Disney; were they going to leave it in? Though by popularizing the song they did make its message more widely heard. In Brazil. Because the version that became popular in the US skips ALL that, restructures the melody, and makes the song about, like, hooking up with a girl on a trip to Brazil then leaving. Great work on the translation, there, Bob Russell.
The 'chattery' music style & volume (Joplin's very-American Ragtime long passé by WW2!) disrupt your lively speech. Next post has some Latino-tinged 'period' music ideas.
Aha, music did improve. Speaking speed and rat-a-tat edge get exhausting - evidently off a script rapidfire rather than a story told with care, pacing and inflection. Slower please!
For HEAVEN'S SAKE! Too wearing to keep listening. WHAT's the hurry? Speak at normal speed please; speak to your listeners with warmth, not to a script with wild abandon.
Panchito actually made one animated appearance without José in the Minnie's Bow-Toons episode "Fiesta Follies".
Thank you so much for this addition! You're right, it's funny how I didn't see that mentioned anywhere.

I think this is the only source *I've* discovered that gives any explanation for Panchito's surname.
This is an important and excellent addition! Thanks.
AWESOME
like in mickey and the racers they sang the song from the movie but they remaked it a little
25:12: A parody of a what where who how?
The parody of Dante's inferno. Did I stutter
The 'chattery' music style & volume (Joplin's very-American Ragtime long passé by WW2!) disrupt your lively speech. Next post has some Latino-tinged 'period' music ideas.
Rooooooosevelt?
Aha, music did improve. Speaking speed and rat-a-tat edge get exhausting - evidently off a script rapidfire rather than a story told with care, pacing and inflection. Slower please!
According to Google Panchito's name is a racial slurr... I'm sure this was coincidence considering their good intentions but still kinda odd
Are you refering to the 'Panchito' part? As I'm aware Pancho is a nickname for men called Francisco. Or you may refer to Pistoles?
Les tres
For HEAVEN'S SAKE! Too wearing to keep listening. WHAT's the hurry? Speak at normal speed please; speak to your listeners with warmth, not to a script with wild abandon.
fair enough
