Nice tip. I do that along with using the randomization to make single hits have more variation. Another thing you can do is use the same sample on layers 2-4, but set their velocity ranges lower like 1-24, 25-50, and 51-75 and set the sample start point a few milliseconds into the sample (so it misses the initial attack). Make it more progressive so the quietest velocity level cuts more off than the louder layers. Set layer 1 to play only the loudest velocities. Now when low velocities are played it starts slightly into the sample and it also has the velocity affecting the attack. In fact everything you do with the volume and attack can be done with a filter too, so quieter hits can be darker (with a low pass filter) and louder hits are pretty much the same.
Oh yeah nice! This is kind of getting at the same thing using the envelope instead of layers. Just something to soften that strongest attack on quieter hits. I hadn’t thought of using the same sample on multiple layers and with different sample start times. I like that idea on the filter. Using the envelope on the filter gets mixed results for me, but using layers with different set filter settings might get what I was trying to accomplish on that front. Thanks!
I use a MPC One, Maschine and Roland MV8000, and, I noticed that on Maschine, all the Abbey Road kits sound very natural, very live drum sounding. The kit that you use makes a difference, a live drum kit pack, gets u half way there! Great video!….MPC Gang!

These are some great and straightforward approaches to more natural drums! Found your channel as I’m in the market for a synth and the hydrasynth has really caught my eye lately. How are you liking yours? MPC Live II is my current centerpiece so it’s great to see the two work together so (seemingly) well. Also - really dig all the sessions you’ve shared! Subbing now. keep jammin 😎
I have been working on putting together a kit and struggling with making rolls sound natural. I did try the pitch thing, and you really do have to set it extremely low - like 2 or 3, and use the Noise setting with the freq set as low as possible for it to be subtle enough, but even then, it's not ideal. But combining it with this tip should go a long way. I also have 4 sample layers triggering at different velocities, and that helps a lot. What would be even better is round-robin a few different hits at each velocity layer. I think it may be possible using pad layers, but I haven't tried this yet. Gonna give it a shot. All these things combined should render the ultimate drum program... I hope. I'm triggering with an Alesis Nitro Mesh kit. The hi-hat is going to be the biggest hurdle, I think.
Good content, well presented. I´m mostly too lazy for details like that. Most of the time I focus extremely on drum timing to get it 100% where I intend it to be and surprising elements in minimalistic patterns.
Thank you! This is my lazy way instead of having to set up multiple sample layers lol. Which isn’t that bad on MPC but is a real pain in Logic’s sampler. Actually. Just making a basic kit is a pain in Logic’s sampler. But this is pretty sample dependent. Really works best with certain acoustic sounds.
@@rumbeloworks Actually thats two branches for me. When I go full realistic I´m on addictive drums or NI studio drummer anyway and play it like I feel it :D For electronic music I limit details a lot. Maybe I should bring back more finesse there too.
What’s your best tricks for more “natural” sounding drums using samples?
Let’s hear ‘em!
Round robins!
Best video ever. Thanks man.

Would love to see a demo video on thid layering technique, is there one on YT?
There’s a lot good knowledge there. Thanks for bringing this up.
This was well articulated and an excellent explanation! Thanks buddy

I don't personally like the sound of maschine

ummm kontakt libraries definitely has it for you but i understand if you enjoy programing it yourself
People who can't figure out stuff like this on their own shouldn't be spoon fed instructions on how to do it.
Cool, have fun in your super awesome exclusive club. The rest of use will just be out here enjoying ourselves realizing it’s not that serious.
