I really love that you acknowledge how vast the options are! As someone researching what it really means to get an MSW, it’s nice to know I’m not the only one still learning about all the possibilities!
I am a freshman in college, and one of the things that attracted me to this profession not only was the chance to help out others, but just the number of choices to choose from in the field.
Thank you so much for this video, I found it so useful. I applied for a MSW in a competitive program didn’t get in this year because of a lack of direct experience, so this video really helped me think about areas I would be interested in starting a internship in to gain experience for a MSW.
I'm a silent subscriber, I will be going in my second semester of my masters degree and I'm starting to struggle if my current job I'm at right now is the best fit, I work in aging and I'm noticing it is not the right fit for me but I'm trying to push it out until I finish... I must say this video was very helpful! Thanks so much❤️
hi Brianna!! I'm so glad this video came at a time it was helpful to you 🥰🥰 I definitely love that there are SO many different areas available to social workers because if something is not the right fit, you can try out something entirely new. Best of luck to you with all that is coming :)) hope your day's going well
Hi Anna, I'm taking Intro to Social Work this semester at my local community college I have learned a lot from my professor and the class we even interviewed a Social Worker I found that really helpful. Thank you for this great informative video about the different avenues of Social work. Still not sure what kind of social work I want to do yet
Hi Rebecca! That is awesome. My Intro to Social Work class was my favorite class in undergrad for similar reasons -- I loved getting to hear all about the different areas of the field that are available and get to talk to real social workers doing the work!
Thanks Anna! This video was great. I've been working in the field of social services for some years and recently decided to go back to school for my degree in SW. I eventually hope to get my MSW. You offered some positions in SW I hadn't considered before. Thanks for getting me thinking about some new options to look into.
Hi Hannah!! So cool to hear you'll be pursuing a degree in social work. As you may be able to tell, I'm a huge social work fan 🤣 Best of luck to you with all that is to come!! Glad this video was helpful :))
Thank you Anna! This video was very informational and educational. I'm currently working towards my BS in social work and I'm glad I clicked on this video. I knew social work was a broad subject but I never knew there were so many different avenues you can take with becoming a social worker. Many people just automatically think CPS or the Food Stamp office and that's it.
I'm so glad it was helpful for you! I love making sure social work students know not to let other people's limited views of social work limit the possibilities of their futures. You will be SUCH an incredible social worker wherever you end up 💗
thks a lot! i've been hesitating several days whether to apply for a Social Work master degree yet i just can't figuer out what i can do with the degree. Now it's clear and gives me more confidence. Thks a lot!!!
Recently got my social service diploma pre pandemic and planning to get a job in the field and go back to school to get my BSW in a couple years, thanks for the video
hey anna! great work on the video. i just got into your channel recently, and i think you do a great job or simplifying a lot of areas and humanizing some subjects that seem super textbook! I hope you’re having a rad day.
hi Amanda!! thank you for this kind comment. that is 100% my goal with this channel so it means a lot to know it's hitting 🥳 AND that it's reaching its target audience :)) welcome to the channel
Thank you so much for this info!! I took a ton of notes!! I was wondering if you could possibly make a video on social work jobs that you can do at a BSW level? Specifically, those you can do while getting your MSW? I know you touched on a few in this video and I'll definitely look into your great suggestions, but it has been such a challenge to find a flexible, social work-related job while getting my MSW 😕. I'm wondering if I'm the only one lol. Of course, there are plenty of other flexible jobs out there like retail, fast food, etc., that I could do, but it would be great to be in a position where I can gain social work skills while in grad school, you know? Anyway! Thank you so much for sharing and being such an inspiration! Every time I start to get discouraged, I love coming to your channel and finding the motivation to keep going! You're a true gem Anna ❤
I will add this to the list for future video ideas! I agree that it can definitely be hard in some areas to find good jobs while getting a degree. In the time between my BSW and finishing my MSW, I was a daycare worker/preschool teacher for a bit and I also did online ACT/SAT tutoring. I found both of those on Indeed (the tutoring paid way better than the preschool did). Good luck!! Thank you for your kind words 💗
Hi there, I just wanted to say that I am currently taking prerequisites for a MSW and I recently landed a job as a foster youth counselor. It's a super flexible job and I get to create my own schedule based on when my clients are available available. I had experience working at a summer camp with kids and I'm also a certified coach. It's my first social work job and I feel so grateful with the flexibility.
Thank you for the suggestion! I hadn't thought about that job title, but I'll definitely look into it. The population I really wanted to work with all throughout my program was older adults. I think I hadn't explored other populations because of that. I love the flexible schedule! @@SnippetsOfSerena
Hi I was just looking for a Social worker video to watch and see if someone can really help me because I am taking classes right now at Prince George's Community college in Maryland hoping to be a Social worker one day. My question for you and advice is which classes can I take take and for how long am I going to finish and graduate as a Social worker with my bachelor's degree. Please help me I am confuse right now. I just need a Social worker with experience to sit me down and direct me on the right path. Do you know how I can get a Social worker one on one to talk with? Thank you so much.
Hi Victorine, it sounds like you need to speak with an academic advisor at your college to ask them your degree progress related questions. Also, maybe it’s possible to look up social workers in your area and email one asking for a video chat about what you need answers on. Hope this helps you!
Hey Anna!!! Your content is amazing. I just got accepted to the MSW program, and I am super nervous as I did not earn a Bachelors in social work. Any advice? Did I mess up by not following the traditional path?
if i have my BA in psychology but want to be a social worker would i need to start over and get my BA in social work or would some credits transfer? or can my BA go towards a masters in social work?
you would be able to get a masters of social work with a bachelors in psychology! & I think you’d find the transition pretty natural too as social work includes psychology, too :) good luck with all your future endeavors!
@@AnnaBea hello i do hope you get to answer my question too. How about the other way around? Like if I have a bachelor's degree in social work but want to pursue psychology or some related profession regarding psychology? *Madam, I need your valuable suggestions regarding this that I completed my post-graduation in MA in Social Work from India in 2022. Could I get a good job in America?*
if i can be honest, america is not as great as it seems yes you could probably get a decent job however the politics of this country and the way people now hate each other id say it is not worth it, with you being foreign some live in fear due to the hate, a lot of middle eastern people are lumped as a "terrorist" since 9/11. If you can overcome the hate and fear and if this is something you really want i say go for it but just remember there are a ton of people who will never see you as equal however there will be just as many that do. there is a reason why many small towns and such dont have a large representation of nationalities
@@pendragofan This is sucha weird response to his/her question. Like yeah there's racial tension but you're acting as if there's this huge antiindian sentiment here when there isn't. Indians had nothing to do with 9/11. And you could assume they wouldn't end up in a small town if they'd move here for work so the lack of diversity in those places doesn't really matter.
Hi Anna!!! Its so inspiring!! I have completed my MSW in India, what kind of diploma at the UK can help me seek job opportunities at UK? Could you please help me out? Thank you in advance❤
Hi! this is a great video! I was hoping you could answer a question for me. I currently have 4+ years of experience working with college students doing advising (I currently only have a BA). If I were to earn an MSW (and not specialize in clinical sw) do you think I would still be applying to entry level jobs? Or would my previous experience "count" towards my overall experience and I would I still be applying for entry level jobs? Hope that makes sense!
Hi! I definitely think your previous work experience would give you a leg-up when seeking jobs post-grad with an MSW! Some jobs will require a certain number of years of "post-grad experience," but not all. Sometimes a hard part of finding jobs as a social worker is getting your foot in the door in an industry and having previous experience like that gets your foot in the door now equipped with a graduate degree.
I have a question can you please help me? SO when I am looking at accredited programs in the CSWE website, some say clinical or direct practice, and others say mental health for example. I am interested in doing therapy in the future so which route will work? is there a difference between the two paths? because the program that I was looking at (The University of Texas at Arlington) has a program with direct practice in mental health and substance abuse. would this prepare me to provide therapy in private practice? thanks so much I have been researching forever and this is the only piece I need to figure out before I enroll.
I think lots of times clinical and mental health can be used interchangeably which can be confusing! My best advice would be to look at the classes you’ll be taking and see if they’re ones that you feel will be interesting to you. The good thing is that getting a future clinical license to do private practice therapy will depend more on your hours and experience after graduating! So whichever degree program you take should help you feel prepared to use and improve those skills as you make steps towards the full licensure. Does that help?

Social work very prides itself on diversity yet it continues to attract fewer and fewer men into the profession (I believe the current figure is something like 15% male and this figure has been slowly decreasing for many years) which means it is *fundamentally unrepresentative* of the communities it serves. I was a social worker for most of my working life and yet I cannot remember a single occasion when this fundamental issue was ever addressed. Also given the current vogue for engaging with all sorts of gender identities, how on earth has this basic issue gone so far under the radar?
