What a pleasant man and a wonderful shop. This is a man who is valuable in many ways. Thank you for asking him to share his shop with us, and for taking the time to post it Joshua.
Many years after you posted, but simply delightful. I hope you enjoyed the years working in that space. Love the fact that your concentrated on the light.
If there's a nicer shop, or a finer gentleman... I've neither seen one... or met one... I'm going to bed happy! Thank you for this video!
I've seen bigger shops. Or even bigger shops with more tools and equipment in them. I don't know if that makes them any nicer though. I imagine the people that own those shops think they're nicer. Or they wouldn't have went through all of the bother.
Well Rick, you just saved me from writing a comment lol.
Greetings from the UK
John.
I could sit and listen to this nice guy all day,
I've never seen a shop this clean and pleasing to the eyes!
I only wish we could have seen more of the beautiful projects that James produced in his piece of heaven.
Jim, you are my new hero. You got me with "you never have enough clamps"
No wonder you never boring in this workshop....very confort and enjoyable room... if i have a room like that i would also sleep in the room hugging those litte dewalt thicknesser :)
LOL. Glad you liked it Ferdy!
Wow! I know it is an old video but I just found it today! It’s amazing, I would like to build something similar in my backyard, smaller infortunatelly! Anyway, I hope this comment finds you well in these difficult time! Good day!
That’s the kind of artisan I long to be. Completely content and passionate about my art with such a gentle/relaxed demeanor. What an inspiring shop and maker. Thanks for sharing.
Mr. Huggett, your shop is the envy of many garage and basement shop owners. There can never be too much light and I very much agree with your window and lighting design. I look forward to reviewing your other videos. Thank you for sharing.
This is one of the best laid out shop's I have seen. All that planning paid off.
Very nice ,two things that tell a good woodworker is how clean a shop is and how organized a shop is. Your shows both.
What a wonderful shop, thank you for sharing.
Wow, I was already very impressed by this undertaking, all the years of preparation and forethought, but then when he said he uses Sketchup for designing the furniture, that blew away the stereotypes I had in my mind about masters of crafts who, for so many years, have used physical tools so skillfully with their hands; I can barely use 3D modeling software (even that is an exaggeration), and he just said it like it is no big deal at all, as though it's actually just another tool like his physical tools. Utter and complete respect!
Simply wonderful - I too could spend 7 days a week in that shop!
Thank you for sharing your shop with us.
What a nice guy. We all should be so lucky
Painted white interior is a great idea, and one that I share. It’s a great way to keep the interior very bright.
I can do things 30 days a month in a shop like yours. Thanks for sharing your New England cultural heritage too. Never better. Miss my Connecticut.
I am envious. What a great place to work. I love wood working but my shop is too small to have what you have. What a place. I know you love that shop.
Dream shop, understatement
Thanks for sharing and having us
OMG I feel so exciting watching the master making of masterpiece
Glad you enjoyed it!
So beautiful . Like a dream to me . Thx. For sharing it with us .
That is wonderful! No wonder you are so proud and wanted to share with us dreamers.
Love the way he got his start!
Beautiful shop Jim!.....and thank you for your service.
A dream shop put together by a great craftsman.
A nice place to hang around, simple beautiful and peaceful, I like the fan on the ceiling, it is common on the southern states works better than any AC or ventilation system
In addition to a magnificent shop, I love the building. My wife would like a larger version for our dream house. That’s how much we like your design. Great video and a perfect shop
Put a bed in there and a loo and you have my dream house.....I mean shed!!! You even have a shed off your shed. I salute you!
It is always interesting to look at other shops. I designed and built mine ground up after many years in the same sort of cramped and too small spaces. Great looking place and I am sure it will suit you well for many years to come.
Thank you very much! something to strive for!!!
You're welcome Billy!
Wonderful. Clean, functional, light and bright. Smart design. Love it.
Very much a dream shop - lots of space, lots of light. I especially like the magnetic chisel holder/tray - think I'll have to make one of those.
Hi James, another Huggett here, or I should say here in Western Australia. Love woodworking and seeing the results of a craftsman... your workshop looks like it would help in that endeavour. Have done very little myself.
Well let me first by saying this was wonderful video. Second James I am sure we could only wish to have achieved what you have in our lives. you have given me new hope for my retirement sir. Such a nice man, I do love your shop and the way you designed it. The ceiling fan was a great idea, same with the dust collection. I also agree with you on the tubing I do not want that either I like the fact pull out the hose hook up and put it back. I mean most times we only operate one machine at time. We might go from one to another but hooking up a hose is not that hard.. Thank you James for taking us through your workshop. I will say Wood and Shop has done some real nice work in showing folks shops off. All the best sir.. Look forward to you next video. I would love to see some more of you work as well.
Thanks Richard. Very kind
Love your shop.
Idea about dust collector system to keep from putting pipes overhead,
I went to this engneers house he'd retired but he said when he had his house built it was with putting a shop in the basement from the start, he can't have out buildings where he lives so he had the contractor prep his dust collection system for him by laying his main trunk pipe under the cement floor He ran a 6" pvc thick wall pipe and added taps at loly poles or beam supports. He knew how he was going to set it up. becuse of his day job he also did metal working so he had both a wood shop and metal working shop. and tons of storage room.
What a wonderful space to work in, seems like one terrific guy!
That's a fantastic tip about the little moisture wicking packets.
A fan in your cupola, now that's an idea.
Fine lookin shop.
Sir it would be an honor to be your apprentice! You’re an inspiration!
Thanks shipmate for sharing your shop. I too have been struggling, working out of garages for the last forty years. Yesterday my wife and I just bought a new house that the builder provides a 30x40 shop building. It will be ready in June so now I have to figure out how I am going to set it up.
Mike Vincent BUC retired
Mikr Vincent Enjoy it, Mike !
What a gentleman..🌹
Yes, he sure is!
Very nice place its so matured and "fathery"
Nice shop. Thanks for the tour.
Very nice .Not a lot of clutter. A simple layout is sometimes more efficient than having a ton of equipment crammed into a small area. A very mature attitude contributes to a fine tuned operation.
Beautiful shop.
Beautiful shop, easy to tell that its a culmination of years of design.
Absolutely Amazing!😍😍😍😍I wish I could get my husband to get half this serious about a workshop! Genius design! Great ideas! Best place in the world to be! I would never go on vacation!
It has to come from within. Because ultimately it is a labor of love that you do have to pour yourself into wholeheartedly.
Those silica packets in the drawers do help somewhat. To renew them place them on a flat baking tray and put them in an oven at 200° for 2-3 hours. After removing from the oven (handle with caution. They will burn you) place them back into the drawers immediately. How long they will keep adsorbing moisture depends on the humidity in your shop.
Damn. Seeing this reminds me of how much further I need to go as a woodworker. It's hard to be one in the third world. Amazing pieces. Wonderful video.
Whoah! First!
If you can get your hands on a copy of "Woodworking in Estonia" you might find some great work arounds
Sean McCurdy will keep my eyes open for it. Thanks for the tip!
What a wonderful work space, beautifully set out and airy.
Love the shop and all the light and high ceiling. My shop is welding and metal fabrication. Dirty work sometimes but I too spend 7 days a week in the shop. Thanks for the tour.
Your furniture is beautiful and I love your shop !
Nice! Now he can mark dream furniture.
You had me when I first saw the exterior. Absolutely beautiful. Then inside...I am jealous. I added a 22x22 foot shop to the end of my house, and have to get stingy about floor space. You have given me some great ideas for my place. I really like the LED track lighting for the perimeter.
22x22 isn't bad. I'm in a 20x20 garage now and I could use an extra couple of feet. Really I could use a 20x60 building.
Beautiful Shop. Thanks for showing it off.
Great shop. You can prevent tools from rusting in the drawers by placing a small container of Vicks Vapor Rub in the drawer. Drill several small holes in the lid to allow the fumes to escape into the drawer.
That's a new one. Interesting. Do you know how or why it works? Thanks for sharing.
I believe it's the fumes from the camphor. You can also purchase camphor blocks online. The Vicks and the camphor blocks slowly evaporate and have to be replaced ever few years.
What a lovely place for you to create, many blessings .
Man knows what he's doing.
Thanks for the great show tour! Jim's work is really beautiful!
Love the “Boat out of the basement” comments, Gibs would be proud. Now you just need a few mason jars with bolts and screws and a bottle of whisky.
If those pieces shown at the beginning are his.... man I can only WISH to be able to make something so beautiful.
Total thanks James
Love the design and layout. You've allowed for the next owner to use the space as they see fit. An artist's studio or a billiard room, etc. Makes me yearn for my own shop.
I too dream of a well-lit shop like that; thanks for this video and pleasant explanation of everything.
When I turn on my ceiling lights I can get my shop bright. Sometimes I want to grope around in the dark like a mole too though. So I have a lot of task lighting setup.
Great space! Thanks for the tour.
What a well thought out shop! Love the building itself! Wonderful design! Lots of goodies inside. Beautiful shop. Completely jealous. Lol
Beautiful shop and beautiful work!
That is one hell of shop! I have quite a few of the same tools...the Sawstop and the DeWalt planer...I ended up needing to upgrade my little 6 inch table top jointer and going with the Hammer A41 jointer/planer combo. It is freaking awesome! I still have the DeWalt but don't use it any more. Thanks for giving us the tour and your work is impressive!
Impressive shop...I hope I can have something like that one day. You are very talented
Man if only i could build my dream shop ! Very nice set up sir !!!!
What a great video. Thank you
You're most welcome!
Fantastic looking shop, and one great craftsman with great attitude! Win combo!
What a beautiful masterpiece!
Love it this is really something!! Enjoy your retirement! I’m in the process of building a workshop I my basement
Love your shop, love all the windows bringing the light and the landscape in. I love your work too. Much more success. Thanks for sharing.
Very nice workshop, it was a joy to watch this video. Thank you
Excellent video
Love the cupola with the attic fan. I have the same idea for my future shop.
Offcuts is a real issue. I've got shelves full of offcuts. Occationally if I need a small piece for glue blocks or something I'll grab something but otherwise the pile gets bigger and bigger..Great workshop
Depending the off cuts you can use them for small projects or for jointing blocks. I also use them for clamping blocks.
Amazing wood shop Sir , I could spend 7 days a week in there as well
Fantastic setup. Beautiful work!
Why would someone dislike this sort of video?
Very nice! Gave me some good ideas for the shop I'm working on.
Great!
That's a very nice work shop. Thanks for sharing.
I loved everything about the shop except the DC system. Thanks for sharing.
Fantastic shop and a Navy man too. I’m USS Midway.
Thoroughly enjoyable video. Love the ceiling thingy, very impressive design! Loved seeing a true craftsman's design on his dream shop, which says a lot for us novices...very likable fellow, with a shop to die for! Not to mention the incredible works of art/furniture -IMO-thanx for sharing such a cool video!
Glad you liked it John!
Very nicely organized!I am aspiring to have a workshop. I definitely gonna copy this.
