As a Croatian born Canadian living outside of Toronto, I'm on Krk island right now, I'm done with Canada as well. As soon as my mortgage expires next year, im not renewing it and im gone.
As a Canadian expat who much, MUCH prefers Croatia, I'm with you 100%. When in Canada I cannot wait to return home to Croatia. My list of reasons is very long but basically it's about traditional values and freedom (not to mention the hundreds of perks such as history, real food, the sea, slow pace...). Thanks for this.
Likewise. It's like as soon as I am in the U.S., all I think about is my return to Croatia. This video hits so many chords for me. I am sending it to fellow Croats in the diaspora as well as other friends looking to repatriate to their own home countries.
what slow pace? I am Croatian working in Croatia, we work overtime all the time, it's stressful and we follow same routine as our colleagues in the USA (and I know because I work with them)
In the 1960s and 70s, my parents and some of their friends left authoritarian Yugoslavia for Canada. Now, some of their children have left Canada for the same reason. I personally know at least 10 people who have moved to Croatia permanently in the last few years.

We have been visiting the North of Croatia for over 20 years and have owned a house (kucha) for 10 years, 2 years ago we applied for and received a right to reside which is valid for 10 years and renewable after that or the opportunity to apply for citizenship. As we are both retired and represent no financial burden on the state, we dont try and exploit the tourist industry and as such we are left alone to live a peaceful life. Whilst not the cheapest place to live the quality of food is exceptional the health care superb and in line with the NHS but with no abuse that the UK system suffers from. In general we love it and are considering making the permenant change when the chance comes.
I don't think I will ever go for citizenship unless they change the rules. Currently Croatia does not allow foreigners to hold dual citizenship and I would not want to give up my UK citizenship.
@@lavordavor7738 "Croatia does not require its citizens to renounce Croatian citizenship when acquiring a new citizenship. The same cannot be said though, for the reverse. Under Article 8 of the Law on Croatian Citizenship, naturalisation into Croatian citizenship requires renunciation of the previous country's citizenship, where allowed by the other country. However, this does not apply in a number of situations, including descendants of Croatian emigrants, national interest of Croatia, and former Croatians who renounced Croatian citizenship to practice a profession in another country."
Damn. I miss Croatia so much. I LOOOVE Croatia. Im croatian but not born there. People move to Croatia because it has it's special charm, delicious food and loving atmosphere.
My grandparents were from Zagreb and I applied yesterday for citizenship. I live in South Africa which gets a bad rap but I can't wait to move! Appreciate your insightful videos;)
I hope that you will solve all the necessary conditions for permanent immigration and citizenship as soon as possible. Greetings from Split. Welcome home! ❤❤
Thank you for your perspective. As a native, I tend to see the negative side more than the positive, but I stayed here because I realized how important the sense of community is for me, and safety. I lived in London, and although a great city, I came back knowing and feelin I made the right decision.

Hi, I've been watching your videos. My parents are Croatian. I grew up in New Zealand and have been living in Melbourne, Australia for the last 20 yrs. I hate it here, everything has gone to the shit, I agree with all you are saying and I constantly dream of living in Croatia. My mum lives alone in NZ. My dad lives in Podgora with his new family, which is near Makarska in Dalmacija. We went last year for a trip and loved it. When i come back I feel miserable here downunder (Melbourne had the most lockdowns in the world btw).... Over there you feel like you are truly living life. I felt like the Adriatic sea was so therapeutic. From the skywhen you fly in Croatia is beautiful, I feel its calling me 'home', its the closest to 'home' my soul could know. Here you feel suppressed in the matrix. I've been super awake and aware for a really long time, including spiritually, I totally know what's going on and I appreciate your videos. I wanted to connect and say hi and Thank you.
Hi Natalia, Thank you for the comment! I can only relate to what you're saying about AUS, which is strange to me because most people in UK idolise living there lol! But weve both seen it, over the years things are definitely getting worse and worse. Makarska is a beautiful place, in all honesty i would of loved to be there, the beach is fantastic and the mountains are beautiful! I hope one day you get to make your dreams come true and move to Croatia! All the best

Now so many are awakening but its just awful vibes everywhere u go…. Yes the beaches are fantastic on the dalm coast. Mountains a beautiful backdrop. Its just a completely different life.
Another Croatian in diaspora, living in LA for over two decades and dreaming of the day when I'll be packing my things for good. Yes, corruption exists everywhere, but the level of crime, insecurity, and homelessness here is unreal and steadily getting worse. I was born in Germany, grew up in Croatia, and now half of my life in LA. While yes, there are things that can certainly be improved in Croatia, there's way more to fix in the US. Grass is not greener here.

More vids please 😀 this vid def resonated with me, my parents left for Aus for a better life in the 1950's, I can see all those benefits you mentioned!
Today I came across your channel and look at some videos that you have posted, I am happy that you found where you belong what happened to me last year when visiting Zadar my home town, I said to myself finally place where you can breathe. I am saying this because last time I was there was 31 years ago, I lived there until my 15 th and moved to Canada. Looking forward to be back soon 😢
I’m Argentinian from Buenos Aires. My grand grandfathercame from Croatia before WWII with his family. I carried out an exchange in Italy 2 year ago and came back with his Rodni List (I went all the way through Zagreb to Ðuđevac) and rn I’m waiting for my citizenship while learning the language. It’s really difficult for a Spanish speaker but I’d truly love to live there at least for trying having a peaceful life in that beautiful region of the world where my roots are from. Hvala ti!
Dusan, my name is Jay, I was born in china, but living in USA for 24 years already and I am US citizen. I Went to Croatia couple weeks before for my vacation and I completely fall in love with your country specific natural beauty and safety. Just like UK, US is crazy now. I am also US military retired and my retired pay is around $3000. So I am interesting to move to Croatia for better quality of life just like you. I looked at internet and found out the house price in Croatia is almost same as US, however, the average of Croatian salary is 3 times lower than American. So, I am just curious how Croatian able to survive? Is most of Croatian can’t afford their own house? Also, another strange thing I find out that the housing rent price is much lower than US. A lot of people said Croatia is a country good to visit, but rough to live. Is this true? Is this because I only look at split, Hvar and Dubrovnik, other place may be cheaper? My goal is to buy a house in split or other neighbor island, buy a fancy boat to run my own tourist business. Please give me some advice. Thank you so much.
My maternal grandparents are from Croatia and immigrated to the states in 1902. I just started my Citizenship By Descent and hope to be living in Croatia sooner rather than later. I’m US citizen and a Permanent Resident of Mexico where I live now. Luckily I can use the Croatian consulate in Mexico City and it will take much less time than if I had to use the consulate in Los Angeles.

In 1988, I left my home and family, went to work and live in Switzerland. The reason was the political system. This twisted system is slowly coming to Switzerland, and the time to return to the Dalmatian hinterland is coming soon.
Croatia is good for living our standars are geting better and better. We are affected by local media controled by western birocrats. Only croats who are lefting for right reason are slavonians(poor region) but others are just affected by propaganda.
Slavonia is not poor, if we are realistic it has a greater potential than the coast, which amounts to 4 months of tourism. The problem is in the state, which is unevenly involved in development. It is easier to invest in the promotion of tourism and earn 15 billion from tourism, than to invest in the production of food and technology.
Hi there is there a need for bricklayers in croatia ? Thats my husbands occupation here in canada ....we are looking to leave here for all the reasons you mentioned. I have a background in hospitality. Any advice would be so appreciated ❤
👍 I agree with you. Change for the better is so slow here... but so is the change for the bad....so maybe we can skip some of those cycles. But you can bet we got as close to real freedom as you can get in any country. By the end of the video i see we are literally on the same page. :D I think we might be going back to bartering with skills and products....
Hi Dusan, it is true the world is very much upside down, it's actually falling apart. Human beings everywhere are suffering from oppression, suppression depression. Freedom and individualism of western thought didn't bring the happiness that was assumed. Neither did nationalism that Croatians assumed? ? We have become excessive and divided consumers. Division and consumer culture is it's own cancer...
In some ways coming from UK to Croatia was like moving back in time but I'm OK with that. I've not tried to start a business here but I'm pretty sure it is harder than starting a business in UK. I had hoped I would meet someone with whom I could create a partnership where I provide the technical knowhow and they handle the paperwork and interaction with customers, suppliers etc. That didn't happen and I'm now so close to pension age that it is not worth bothering. In UK I had a sole trader business and it was extremely easy to set up.
This is precisely the wrong way of going about things as you say. Croatia has changed me for the better. I feel I've discovered my true and genuine self. Sure, the red tape is frustrating. But traditions, culture, language, etc. are to be appreciated and respected, even if one doesn't agree with everything. There is nowhere in the world I'd rather be! And I say that with sincerity and from my heart.

I wanted out of the U.S. as a 15yr old, back in the 1960's. Because it was very obvious to me, watching all the adults around me very closely, seeing how unhappy, angry, depressed they were, I could never understand how they could keep saying, we live in the greatest country in the world, everyone wants to live here. I thought to myself, they really don't realize, the lies, illusions they are living. Or do, and push it all aside, as this is the only country they have. So must stuck with it no matter how bad it gets. I didn't want to live my life that way. I also have a moral compassion that most Americans lack. So, they are fine screwing each other, and anyone abroad to get ahead. After visiting more than thirty countries, living in some long term, I decided to settle in the Balkans. This region fits my personality the best, why I'm so happy, and content!
@@Dusan.Grujic A secret when comes to Americans. I only tell people I like. Most Americans have no idea the country exists. I like it that way. A young Croatian that moved to Michigan, probably moved back by now, 12yrs ago, says to me, 'A American asked me if we had TV over there. I just said, What's that!'.

We visited last summer and fell in love with the what we experienced. I’m about to sign up for the plumbers union here in Texas but recently he asked if I wanted to go work for him at the marinas… decisions decisions…
There are many reasons but the US specifically, has many positives but the negatives are quite harsh. Gun Violence would be number 1 and the general disregard for your neighbor. Secondly, if somebody has a home in the US or Canada, and is able to sell for a great price...why not? 3rd, if you have earned a pension in the US or Canada, you'll make more than the average person working in Croatia....you only live once anyways so enjoy!!!

i just wanted to give a headsup to anyone moving to Croatia from bigger cities ect. I was born and raised in Croatia, but lived in many countries in my twenties and come from a well off educated family...i have found myself living on one of the Croatian islands during covid and as a Croatian i was shocked at what i have went through from the locals. If you are choosing a place to live and have never lived here or spent short amonuts of time please do not idealize it. The small towns and villages during the summer as a tourist are cute but living there among the locals the whole year is something else. Many locals are extremely narrow minded, very mean and do not like foreigners outside of tourists giving them money. One quarter of Croaita lives in Zagreb and even for us locals in the south are crazy. What they sell you in the summer is not who they are. They do not see you as an equal, they will try and scam you in anyway possible. They are very agressive and behave like tribes. Be careful when choosing a place and my adivce is to stick to bigger cities and north in general as the quality of life is better. The coast is ok in the summer for two months but you will see that for other ten months you are stuck at a remote place with people that are hostile and will not accept you while pretenting to be friendly and trying to scam you for money or clout. Its a different mentality. They are cruel to animals and have not developed culturally since the time your gradparents left. Many of the diaspora had to leave certain places due to hostility, and political reasons and ask your family before going back why they left. Life in Croatia is great,Zagreb, parts of Istria, Rijeka are all cool...south is for vacation and summer trips. You will get dissapointed since on the coast in small towns there is corruption and a lot of jelaousy towards people of higher status. Before investing spent time in a place but as a Croatian from Zagreb with a lot of international experience and american diploma i have roots in the south after what i went through i would not reccomend living there to anyone long term. this applies to all places between Split and Dubrovnik and especially the islands! People there are savage and do not let their nice houses that they built in the last few years convince you otherwise. Read up on the history of what happened in many places after the ww2 and why many of your families were forced to leave. Many horrific crimes happened and no one was held responsible and their children are still alive and think the same. Stick to big cities and Zagreb. I welcome you back home, we have been waiting on your return 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you for sharing your experience, very valuable for some to read! And I can relate to some of which you write about. Regarding the history, i know some but i would rather not learn about it as all it does is bring anger. as people here have around 5 holidays which basically remind them about hating Serbs. which is uncomfortable for me. But it is what it is. I chose to live here.

@@Dusan.Grujic i m sorry it makes you uncomfortable but for most its not a reminder but something they live with and struggle every day of their life… i have been through war and so have Many others…pretending it didn’t happen will not help but rather encouraging those responsible to take responsability and get punished as Well as learning what lead to it while respecting the sorrow, pain and trauma that Many experienced…we cannot escape the past…that the is only formula for repeating it…i would also feel very uncomfortable living in Serbia knowing that literal murderers who commited disgusting crimes are walking around free…women in Vukovar meet their agressors on the street daily…its not your fault, its not my fault and we had no part in any of it…i was a child…but i know the only Way forward is truth, justice, acountability and forgivness for all involved…yet those simple steps are still being blocked…i watched what happened in rawanda after the war…all who commited any crimes were encouraged to admit guilt…they served up to ten years in prison and afterwards had to go back to the villages where they comitted crimes and ask for forgivness from families those they harmed…many now live together in peace…and Rwanda is the most advance country in Africa…everyone wants forgivness but would skip the necessary steps Like accountability and repentance…and this is where we have a problem! I send you love and blessings brother, dont be angry about things you have no control over, pray to God that all affected find peace and pray for the men that were kids then that did these crimes that destroyed their souls to find God and ask for forgivness…remember there is no justification for attacking civilians, women or Children…Zero…on all sides…and who ever did it is personally responsible as Well as all who justify it…i m not a nationalist…i just stand for the truth and justice and all sides as any real human does…❤️🙏
I like the fact you came to Croatia and it makes me happy people from other parts of the world build their new home here. But I do take issue with you propagating corruption as something positive just because in Croatia everyone has access to it. Corruption is not a public utility and it makes a lot of people here sick to the stomach what people can get away with due to corruption. There are parts of Croatia where you can't build a house without paying off the right people. You should have made a firm stand in your video against corruption instead of painting it in nice colours. I have a feeling this wasn't your intention, but a lot of us are sensitive to corruption because there is too much of it and it is perceived as #1 reason we are not progressing as much as we should, both economically and as a society in general.
Hey, Im sorry about that. I am against it, but I came to the realisation that actually its only accessible for the people on top in other countries and when i thought about it that way then it makes sense for people to have it too. I had one time where a parking guy waited for me at the parking. he said he was waiting to see 'what we can do' instead of slapping a fine on. to be honest I would only be happy to give him a coffee for not fining me 30 euro. I guess this is a good case scenaruio but obviously there are alot of other cases which are not like this.

Many emigre/diaspora croats from Korcula returned to Australia after they spent a few years of the ' lifestyle ' It is very difficult to adjust to that Balkan mentality and life style after living in the West . Croats are very very intolerant of minorities of any type .
Sadly this wonderful country has the worst bureaucrats ,Police and Court system I have ever experienced .The system is similar to what you would find in Africa or the most corrupt Latin American country
that is why is you need to get used to, that is the only way to leave in Croatia. We have different mentality. As Dusan said it is challenge. If you accept lifestyle, you are right on the money.
That is why over 250 000 young people have left in the last 10 years . Disgusting criminal Politicians and bureaucrats have destroyed the country . The mentality of these people running the country is something like a mafia style Russian city council . @@antonsoldo3161
Put your thinking caps on. How can goods and services cost more in Croatia than in Slovenia? They can't and shouldn't. So, what is going on? Higher prices means higher tax receipts. That simple. The country is over-regulated and over-taxed.
I was there during the winter but everything was closed. Then I visited again during the summer and all I saw was Germans and other tourists. Croatia is more like a theme park than a country. You can't live there during the winter because everything is closed up and you can't live there during the summer due to overcrowding because of millions of German tourists
I worked this summer in Croatian tourist industry. Payment was shit, working was heavy, nobody gives aa shit about you. Take some (real) sick days-you are done. Fired. Wben i started working, there were many Phillipinos and Nepalese workers. Not anymore, they didn't travel few 1000s miles for bad paycheck

@@Dusan.Grujic i don't have any intention to move there. I live in the greatest country in the world-it is not USA. Where i live, no tornadoes, no floods, no earthquakes, no gangs or cartels, the summer is hot but not the tropic one, winter is short and without snow (maybe every 10 years we have few days of skinny snow), no ultra nationalists, we accept everyone (of course, assholes exist here to). I love my part of Croatia, ISTRA forever!
There is a huge difference if you are living in Canada or USA! Europe has a huge problem with illegal migration right now. I would never ever move to Europe at this moment. Living in a country like Croatia is not sitting in a café and having a holiday feeling, you need to work, earn money, pay rent, visit a doctor, go to school, college etc, and live like the Croatians do. This romantic idea just to move to a country, that you visited once or twice, is not a good idea.
You do know eu has 28 members and not all of those share same problems. Usa has more problem by faaar with migration then croatia . Also croatia dont have every year new drug epidemy, school shotings, gangs running one third of town, robberies and mass crime ect.
I wanted to retire in Croatia, unfortunately it's now far too expensive. Once they adopted the Euro, prices skyrocketed and I do not own property in Canada so I wouldn't have the kind of cash required to buy property in Croatia. Property in Croatia is being scooped up by the wealthy, which is driving the prices up and is hurting local Croatians which is why the young are leaving the country. The Canadian dollar against the Euro means our standard of living would be worse in Croatia than it is here. As for your woke comment - woke means NOT being a racist, bigot...very disappointing to see so many young people adopting Nazi values under the guise of 'freedom'. Diversity is what has kept the human race going and advancing, inbreeding is a dead end.
Your wokeism is destroying Europe and other western countries. The third world’s that enter the countries have not adapted how to live there or function in society. If you think that these people aren’t the problem then you are delusional. The reason why Croatia is attractive is because it is one of the last European countries which is a Christian god fearing country. Which makes it a safe and beautiful place to live. Sounds like you’d be better off in Canada with the woke movement. And see for yourself how your country will and already has fallen apart. Woke culture is destroying everything. Pozdrav.
Young people have been leaving Croatia years before the real propery prices "skyrocketed". Negligable number of young people are adopting "nazi values" (what ever that means). So, the question is: why are you lying?
We dont want your woke shite , hiw is it ok to castrate 12 old or do puberteta blokers but giving alkohol or tattoo before it isnt, taatoo you can take off, alkohol will leave your sistem but body will be perminently destroyed from hormons and shite you do. Not for my child. You think you are creating utopia not noticing your society is bleeding dry.
As Croat born in Croatia, they will be disappointed , price, salary, corruption, neglected law jurisdiction, police, hospitals, neglected most of country, only good is tourism and only ones with House at sea part can make some profit.. In less of 15years milion croats left country, mostly young but people with 40-50years leaving also, not to mention country with smallest number of newborn kids
these are out of touch westerners that will move back in a couple of years anyway. Majority live on western salarie. You know if they were born and had to work like a normal croat they would cry and flee back to the west.
I'm not even remotely disappointed. In fact, the opposite is true for me. Croatia is not perfect but nowhere is. But we as Canadians could not be happier than when we're at our home in Croatia. The way of life far exceeds that in Canada on nearly every level (except wages). Absolutely no comparison. We have no family in Croatia but it is home and where we belong. My opinion, of course, but it's the same story for 100% of the foreigners we know living in Croatia. And we know MANY. We can't all love the same thing. But Croatia has peeled the blinders from my eyes and I see how good we have it!
They are coming but it dosen't mean they will stay. I've come from Australia and have much experience on mine machinery 10 X the size of what they have in Croatia. Unfortunately the Croatian government doesn't recognise my qualifications from Australia. I'm definitely not going to sweep streets when I have qualifications. Secondly your real estate prices are ridiculous for what you get and the quality of finish. Croatia isn't the promise land. If tourism dosen't work it would collapse in a year. Be more realistic in your opinion. It receives 65 billion in support from the EU every year. If the EU breaks up then a population of less than 3 million wouldn't last long against larger populations.
@@GeneShepherd-k1s hey Gene it sounds like you were debating on moving back, and just because they don’t accept your certification, much like they didn’t mine. Market properties as a job but just say negative stuff about it? Justin I owned a 25 acre market garden in Australia with 2 trucks. I'm far from negative mate. I'm realistic. Croatia only pumps money into tourism instead of infrastructure. It's population was 4 million in 2019. It's now under 3 million in 2024. That's factual figures not negativity mate. As of the EU, Turkey Hungary and Austria is almost done. The Chinese have gone to Serbia and Hungary not Croatia Croats receive 65 billion in funding from the EU Because they can't stand on their own. The EU is broke. I'm a 60 year old business operator that looks at facts and figures, not negativity. Croatia dosen't produce enough food to feed itself. I have all the stats that my office workers compiled for me before I came. Time for Croatia to stop spending on tourism and start spending on infrastructure. I have been from Osijek to Varaždin to Zadar to Istria and it's the same. No Infrastructure.

@@Phiyedoughwhat are you talking about? Croatia allow dual citizenship. You are misinformed.

Croatia is good for living our standars are geting better and better. We are affected by local media controled by western birocrats. Only croats who are lefting for right reason are slavonians(poor region) but others are just affected by propaganda.
Agree!

What business were you thinking of? I think you were better off not opening it, its a ball ache.

There are many reasons but the US specifically, has many positives but the negatives are quite harsh. Gun Violence would be number 1 and the general disregard for your neighbor. Secondly, if somebody has a home in the US or Canada, and is able to sell for a great price...why not? 3rd, if you have earned a pension in the US or Canada, you'll make more than the average person working in Croatia....you only live once anyways so enjoy!!!
just enjoy the best way you can

i just wanted to give a headsup to anyone moving to Croatia from bigger cities ect.
Slažem se 👍
Maybe you're just repulsive to them.

Lots more are going back....
Good.

Dobar video. Ja jos par godina u Kanadi, okolica Toronta, i onda mi se selimo u Spanjolsku. Zasto Spanjolska, zbog medicinskih stvari. Sunce u okolici Malage sija preko 320 dana u godini i fakticki nema zime. Suh zrak cijele godine..
Sve najbolje! :)
Many emigre/diaspora croats from Korcula returned to Australia after they spent a few years of the ' lifestyle ' It is very difficult to adjust to that Balkan mentality and life style after living in the West . Croats are very very intolerant of minorities of any type .
Just stay in Australia. If you ever put your foot on Croatian soil I will became Intolerant and will discriminate you…😁😜😎😂😝
This is why it takes resilience to live here. I look at it as a challenge!
I agree with this
I was there during the winter but everything was closed. Then I visited again during the summer and all I saw was Germans and other tourists. Croatia is more like a theme park than a country. You can't live there during the winter because everything is closed up and you can't live there during the summer due to overcrowding because of millions of German tourists
In some place this answer is valid but it doesnt mean thats what its like everywhere.
@@Dusan.Grujic it's like that everywhere on the coast like and that's the only place I'm interested in.

I have friends and relatives in USA,they have no intention to return. They may have Croatian blood, but let's be real, they are Americans
Everyone has their own decision where to live, personally i think America is soon to fall.
@@anfrankogezamartincic1161 I'm in Istra, too! ❤
This romantic idea just to move to a country, that you visited once or twice, is not a good idea.
ha ha and where do you live? croatia has better health care than America and Canada and you work like in any other country
Croatia has none of those problems ulike the rest of Europe
Pozdrav.
I agree you Dušan, wokeis destroying our civilization, our values, our future.
Kindest regards dear sir 👍✌️
@@maslina4567 LMAO its not your home nor do you belong there. Its like a nigerian saying he belongs in croatia 🤣🤣🤣 No tf yall dont

@@Dusan.Grujic Because if they end up being LGBT+ or anything that deviates from your idea of “normal”, you won’t accept them. Which is sad.
I was still able to operate through a limited business without quals. But because of this you seem super negative.
I agree the real estate is overinflated but what do you want me to do? Market properties as a job but just say negative stuff about it? Come on, want kind of business would I get? 0️⃣
And yes because of the funding it is growing exponentially, there is no point trying to second guess the fall of the EU, that is out of both of our control but I doubt it’s going to happen.

The Chinese have gone to Serbia and Hungary not Croatia
Croats receive 65 billion in funding from the EU Because they can't stand on their own.

Croatia dosen't produce enough food to feed itself.
I have all the stats that my office workers compiled for me before I came.
