Being Black in Croatia | Afro Review - Things to Know Before Going to Croatia - Dubrovnik 4.5 Fros

  • I didn’t even know where Croatia was on the map a year ago, let alone know what the country had to offer.
But boy was I surprised when I found out that this country has some of the most beautiful landscapes you could expect in Europe.
Lofty mountains, crystal blue pebble beaches, majestic waterfalls, and countless islands.
With all that being said, the biggest shock and my favorite aspect of Croatia was the warmth of the people.
Being black in Croatia definitely had a unique flavor to it. People weren’t expecting to see a kid like me out there.
We spent 9 days in Croatia road tripping from Zagreb to Dubrovnik. In that time, I took note of the country’s demographics, safety, costs, entertainment options, and a few other aspects.
Taking all those into account, Croatia received 4.5 out of 5 Fros on the Fro Rating Scale!

Yes, Croats are predominantly friendly and sociable, also very keen to learn about different people's cultures, ways of life, experiences etc. We're also usually here to help and give some good advices when needed to the foreigners but also to socialise with them.
When it comes to racism for the most part of our history this was never real issue or problem in Croatia!
One fun fact from the history to add here that is related to this topic: once powerful The Republic of Dubrovnik, nowadays part of Croatia, was actually first in Europe to abolish slave trade on it's territory! That was in ancient 15th century, more precisely in 1416.!
That was several centuries before Great Britain and US that had started abolishing it yet at the beginning of 19the century!
Also one interesting fact: that same republic has been the world's first country to recognize then new USA as a sovereign nation!
      Kind regards from Croatia!

If the old dude on the market was 70 i doubt he knows the n word i bet he was gonna say something in croatian because that word is really only american and the new generations know it as a no no word internet told us not to say. There was no history with black people in our country and the older generations do not use the n word in their normal conversations because it has no meaning to them. Croatian people (older gen) have more prejudice towards Serbian people for example because of the war 20 or smth years ago that happened and took the lives of their loved ones who fought. Ofcourse there are always stupid people no matter what part of the world u are in but what im trying to say its not in the norm around here to judge black or asian or indian or whatever because we have no personal history, and at the same time it is the reason most often people stare when seeing people with different skin colours irl and not in movies.

We are both similar and different. Maybe if we showed more understanding and respect to each other like normal Croats and Serbs do, things would be better between our two countries. I do understand that people who lost someone in the war hate. But I can't understand how can someone hate entire nation. I've met both good and bad Serbs and both good and bad Croats. There are good and bad people in every nation. I can't hate all Serbs even if I lost everything in the war. I haven't met all Serbs so I can't hate entire nation.

in the rest of Croatia black is really exotic worth watching and studying (without any insult)
Serbo-Croatian relationship is like a very bad marriage

I have a friend whose parents came from India to Croatia, and I never really focused on the color of his skin, because we're all humans at the end of the day, you just have to be a decent human being and treat everyone with respect (as long as they treat you with respect obviously). I'm glad that you had a great time in my country, much love dude.

Oh there are so many little but unique places that blow mind even to us croatians sometimes (like Rastoke village) that should be in my opinion credited more than some standard tourist locations. Btw when we find a job in a restaurant or a good take out bar, we're usually suposed to memorize all the dishes because it is very common for people to ask what are they going to eat xD I dunno why, it is like a tradition here. Croatia is a small country by population & there is so much space around that results in various creative ideas like different kinds of bars or museums! Or even bakery! Croats are profound Catholics. They have a lot of missionaries that work in Africa among heavily underdeveloped people, preaching, establishing elementary schools and teaching people useful crafts. Therefore, we have encoded in our brains: we are all equal brothers and sisters in Jesus.
The older and midlife generation use the word "Black" and not Afroamerican, because it was normal back then in their youth. That was the generation for whome,in their childhood, seeing the black person "live" was wow, some kind of nice surprise. They were than calling parents and friends "look, the blackman".
Racism is absent in Croatia because of very strong Catholicism among Croats. Also, the older and midlife generation grew on cinematography from 70s (Coffee 😎 ...) and 80s that popularized black community. They also saw TV series Roots (Kunta Kinte etc.), which made them more senzibilized. One can't stay indifferent.
There are some things that made Croats feel empathy with black people, because of some historical similarities. Croats were subjugated people. Suffered oppression remains in memory of people, even few generations later. Croats were not the colonizers, nor the big landowners nor tycoons, but just ordinary people who came in New World to do the heavy physical work. Therefore there is no supremacist attitude.
While as part of the country that was the part of the Non-aligned movement (especially in decades of decolonization, 60s, 70s) many students from the Third World came to study in Croatia (mostly Zagreb), many were blackmen. They enjoyed equal status among local students. Also, many Croatian experts went to work in the Third world on equal terms with locals.
Being black and from the USA, the best combination for blackperson in Croatia. Americans guests have excellent reputation, nice behaviour, very good tippers, especially blackmen.😎
Trivia: there is a phrase in Croatian "raditi kao crnac" ("to work like a blackman"), meaning to work hard and exhausting (usually physical) work, and the verb "crnčiti", literary meaning "to blacken", with the same meaning as the phrase above.

I feel so bad that you even have to make this video. The other day I watched a girl rating her experience in Australia and anxiety she had when she had to show her natural hair. I felt so bad. What kind of society does that to you :/ I'm Croatian living in Australia and until coming here I never thought about the race. Growing up in Croatia you don't think about it. You are not white, you are Croatian, then European and then citizen of the world. It messes up with my head that here (Australia) people judge me for my "whiteness" when I don't feel that at all. I'm glad you had a positive experience in Croatia. All the looks are curiosity probably :) btw we don't have the n word. I knew the word from American music but learned its meaning maybe a couple of years ago after some scandals in US happened. So if somebody says something you think it's insensitive, it's not from a bad place it's just that we don't understand the US historical context like you do since we are not Americans :) But we certainly love to learn new things! btw you made me sooooo homesick!

Hi Jelena! Yea it's unfortunate that it's even a thing to think about when traveling around the world. But it's the same way in the USA. I'm concerned about going to neighboring states because of my race, so you can imagine the concern of going overseas.
I'm happy that you didn't have to think about race growing up. When I take a trip and I don't have to think about, I feel a bit lighter. It happens every now and then. The stares don't bother me because i know they're coming from that place of curiosity like you said.
I really appreciate your thoughtful comments and for watching. I hope you get to come home soon 🏡

And yes, two years ago I saw a black girl in my small town (first time in real life not on tv) and I stared like a stupid cow. I did not mean to be rude but she was sooo beautiful I couldnt help myself. Now I regret it, she probably thought I was a racist.

Most of the houses that you can buy there are like that, fully built but with nothing inside. Croatian people belong to the group of Slavic tribes which came in 7th century to Europe, after the fall of Roman empire. We never had slaves. In fact: Slavic in other languages translates as "Slave" but in ours it means "Glory". The reason behind is, Slavic nations were often slaves, cause they did not convert to Christianity immidiately. You were in Dubrovnik, which at one point was a state, and their flag has a Latin word Libertas (Freedom). Perhaps you should have taken another tour, insted of Games of Thrones. Most important, we (as in all Slavic nations) never participated in any kind of colonization. That is the reason why you dont see so many black people. And that is the reason why did I, 25 years ago when I saw a black man, sad to my friend: "This man deffinatly use too much tanning of skin". And he said to me:"Are you serious? He is a black person". Got it :, I did not recognize that black person was in front of me.
