It took 35 years for them to award a black woman in that category, and Andra gave the performance of her life. Watch the Strange Fruit performance alone. It’s an Oscar worthy scene. The movie is another story, but Andra’s performance was the most incredible redeeming quality. At least watch her performance before being so shocked. I can rationalise the Jodie Foster win as Close being in a bad film, Colman already winning a lot of globes and Seyfried not getting SAG or being respected. Foster is respected and I’d rather have her win than Close. Andra Day, I don’t know how that happened. I don’t want to think that maybe the globes quickly mustered support around her. They extended the voting till last Tuesday, and that LA times article about them having no black members came out before. Not taking away her win, she was great in a mediocre movie and no one saw it coming.

I have a gut feeling Nomadland is gonna be the Boyhood of this year and Trial the Birdman of this year. Boyhood won everywhere except PGA and SAG but lost to Birdman at the Oscars. Shape of water also only won critics choice and PGA and won. Spotlight hardly won anything but won Best Picture. Trial still has a good shot.
The Globes chose Boyhood over Birdman and Boyhood swept nearly everything until the PGA and Oscars. Nomadland is the front runner but so was Three Billboards, The Revenant, and Boyhood. 12 Years a Slave is the most recent to sweep everything.
