I really appreciate this video. I received mine in June 2021, but felt intimated and kept putting it off till today, June 2022! I too made blood sacrifice. I punctured my index finger and hurt my middle finger while removing the long ABS trim on the left. Didn't even notice till I saw blood on the prying tool! 😆 Hardest part was to move the gear stick back and forth, and until I could do this, the centre console couldn't be removed easily. Thankfully all the plugs worked, and the replacement plastic part fit without modification. It is really very well made. Interesting the radio showed "VW Golf MK7 (5G) retro fitting double USB char..." so it knows about it through cable from the cigarette lighter power plug. Had to clear some codes as you mentioned. When I posed the question a year ago, that was before I bought an OBD2 dongle. I've learnt so much! Thanks again.
Happy to help! P.S. Your radio most likely showed title of the last media file played on your phone. And I believe you used the phone to watch the tutorial.
Wow amazing, this works on VW Jetta GLI MK7, here in Mexico the VW Jetta doesn’t have the rear ac vents, this works perfectly with the 2 usb ports, thanks
Hey Luis! Are you sure it fits on Jetta MK7? I have a 1.4L TSI down here in Brazil and there a guy selling it. Have you done the retorfit or know anyone who did it?
I really liked this idea until I saw your front unit had a USB socket but my 2014 doesn't, it has connectors and leads for Apple devices I believe so don't know if that makes a difference. Then when I saw how much more work was involved pulling out panels I decided my daughter can carry on using the simpler twin USB adapter that plugs in the cigarette lighter socket. Well made video though for those who still want to do it. I'm definitely interested in the stop/start device harness though after seeing your video on it as I always switch that off every start up.
Done. Thank you for the video. In my gtd 7.5 it does not fit 100%, but 99%. I noticed that upper corners are a little bit round, not sharp as the original part. Never mind, it is hardly visible
A little comment: if you can make a close-up on how the connector looks like, it’d be even more easier for others to find out the way to remove them. And, again, thanks!
I would have tested the USB ports before installing all the trim back in place, just in case they didn't work and you needed to check your wiring. Anyway good video.
Hello mate thanks for video I got another? My golf 7 has factory front and rear parking sensors but not auto park or parking assist plus I wonder if I can upgrade it so it can be able to do that like my old vw touran 7 seater?
Hi, have you fitted rear footwell lights yet, they fit under the front seats. my latest fit in my scirocco is samsung 15w wireless charger inside the ashtray lid, cant see any modification at all, 100% stock look, but wireless charges my s20 at fast charging, cheers.
Hi, great video. I would like to get that adapter you use at 6:32 , do you know what that is or have any links so I could purchase that adapter. I did not want to splice the existing wire. Your adapter is a lot cleaner. I would like to use that adapter with the cigarette light to power my led in the phone chubby. Hope you can help...
Another great DIY video. Do you think this would fit RHD VW Golf Mk7 R? The link you posted states LHD, however the part looks like it would fit both LHD and RHD? thank you
mr-fix thnk you! The ubs cable annoyes me pretty much😅 i cannot find another usbport, is there any other way to have a usb port that connects to the carplay?? I have a mk7.5 from 2017
@@mrfixpl Would that USB HUB run through the infotainment unit? That's what these cars need not just more charging ports. As I mentioned in another post here VW should have had at least 2 USB to infotainment unit plug ins one for phone so you can take advantage of CarPlay and another for iPod or laptop
@@harryberry474 yes. both USB ports are visible as media source on the infotainment screen. And both can be used for CarPlay/AndroidAuto. Infotainment using needs to be recoded for double USB. Not sure if firmware needs to be updated for this feature.
So the provided Aliexpress link is the same vendor you bought yours from? I ask as there have been reports of these not fitting properly and I would like to be sure the one I buy fits. Thanks.
One that I bought was from "Shop5247112 Store" which was unavailable at the moment when I was making this tutorial. I saw those reports and there seems to be two types of the rear vent element. Not sure why VW make two different versions and not sure what's the rule over here (is it MK7 vs MK7.5; EU vs USA; electronic parking brake vs hand brake...). Also keep in mind that MK7 interior was available in 2 or 3 colors.
@@mrfixpl thanks. I wonder if there are differences to the vent panel other than color - IE: if an eGolf or R have a different panel then say a GTI or GTD.
Sorry. My MK7 came with automatic already. But there are kits on AliExpress for conversion. Not sure how hard it is to install it and if it requires some coding afterwards.
How do I get the two side panel off? It is the hardest since there is no way to pull it out. It is the most workable part. It will only be able to connect when the side panel is done. Do you have photos?
Really appreciate this. I've had the part saved in my AliExpress Wishlist for a couple of years! You mentioned you need to clear the fault codes. Is this complicated and might it void the warranty?
To be honest I'm not sure if there's any difference between LHD and RHD cars regarding this element. BUT I've seen some AliExpress feedback that someone bought this part and had a completely different one originally installed in the car (air duct position, arm rest trim). Also there are different interior trim colors so you also need to take a looks at that.

Some systems will come on of you just open/close the door or try to shift DSG from P. Even if the ignition is off. For example infotainment unit boots up as soon as the drivers door is opened. Screen comes up with ignition but the system has already started and if the AUX/USB port is disconnected it will detect that. Same for the parking brake button.
...and you want to check if the charger works before putting everything back together, so most likely you will turn the ignition half way though the installation.
Blood sacrifice is requirement when working on any car, VW's aren't exempt. If I don't bleed I'll probably have to repeat whatever I did because it won't work properly... unless blood is shed. I'm very disappointed that VW didn't install 2 USB ports in the center column one for phone and one for iPod would that have been too much to ask. I like using iPod for music but because I do I can't have my phone "wired" to infotainment system too which really sucks. Installing those USB ports (for charging) in the center console in back isn't worth it. Just get a cigarette lighter to USB adapter there's 2 cigarette lighter sockets and a million different choices for USB adapters. I understand wanting to keep it stock looking...but for this much work it's just not worthwhile.
