4:59 Well, no wonder he was 'named Person Of The Year by the American Association of Suicidology for spreading positivity through his music and lyrics'.
The only reason I originally had any curiosity about this was because I didn't know the guy from Destroy Build Destroy was a musician, or anything else really. I looked at him like, that guy looks really familiar in a really happy kind of way, and then I learned where I knew him from, and I was like, this is insane. So then I listened to the album, and it's the biggest, most epic ball of motivational cheddar I've ever laid ears on. In short, this thing reminds me constantly how awesome I am and how awesome life is and makes me want to destroy all the obstacles in my way and build up my dreams (and presumably destroy something else later). I'm thrilled that Anthony loves this too.
Alright, this video helped, but your comment cinched it. I need to pick this up, it sounds like it could help with my depression. Or at least shut it the fuck up for 52 minutes.
You are worth kindness, love and acceptance. That and you're not alone. Please know there are people out there who care and who can help. I truly, sincerely hope you find more ways to love and accept yourself.
@@lordfinklebottom7278 Now it's the second longest. A Steve Gaul, a drummer from Canada, completed a 121 hour drum solo. Gotta give credit to Andrew for setting the record, though.
I was hoping you'd review this album, glad to see you liked it. Andrew W.K. is unironically one of my favorite artists and this new album is fantastic. You're Not Alone was exactly the album I needed right now. It's fun and inspiring and really lifted my spirits in a time when I was feeling pretty down.
“If it weren’t for music, I would have killed myself a long time ago”, Anthony what the fuck dude are you okay EDIT: Not one of those meme comments, he actually said this about 4 ish minutes in, and it’s super concerning
Yeah actually that comment legit concerned me. We love you melon, aside from being the best music reviewer ever, you're also just an awesome guy with really great insight into all sorts of things and a super cool personality!
I get wet is the first album I bought solely based on on the strength of the album cover without ever hearing the music. I loved it and I learned a valuable lesson: you can judge a book by its cover. I’ve been doing it ever since.
Rumour has it that he hit himself in the face with a brick and then blew his nose to take that photo, because he insisted that the nose blood be real because people would be able to tell if it was fake
I love this album, and I've listened to it six times already but I'm not sure if I caught that 45 minute Musique Concrète interlude that Anthony keeps mentioning.
I'm actually really surprised you liked the album this much! I've been kinda going back and forth on how I feel about it for a while because I like Andrew W.K. and he really helped me through a darker moment in my life, and so I really wanted to like this album--and I do, even if it kinda drags at some point--but some thing about it hasn't quite gripped me in the same way. One thing I do appreciate though is the minute-long spoken word interludes. A gripe I have with the album is that Andrew's writing style isn't really all that conducive to tackling larger concepts in a nuanced fashion, and something I picked up on pretty quickly is the fact that these interludes were an attempt to expand on complex themes in greater detail (specifically "In Your Darkest Moments" leading into "The Devil's On Your Side" and "Break the Curse"). While I'm still not sure how successful it was, I thought that was a very smart way to split the difference, and it's not entirely out of fashion for Andrew, either--thinking fondly of you, 'Make Sex'! Definitely gonna give it another listen to reevaluate it because there's a lot I like opposite a lot I thought could be better. But it is really good to hear Andrew W.K. again! FAVS: 'Music Makes Life Worth Living', 'Ever Again', 'I Don't Know Anything', 'Keep On Going', ''The Devil's On Your Side', 'Total Freedom', 'Beyond Oblivion' LEAST FAV: at this moment, maybe 'Break the Curse'?
I don’t listen to Andrew’s music, but I love reading his columns, so when he came to my town to play music, I made it a priority to go. He’s an inspirational dude.
random Andrew WK fact - he has produced 2 albums that if you are a fan anything no wave, experimental rock, or noise rock and don’t mind(or love, like I do) lots of electronics in rock, you need to check out NOW. Sightings - Through The Panama To Live and Shave In LA - Noon and Eternity

This album dropped on my birthday, and I took that to mean that this album would bless my year. And it did by dragging me from my depression and making me realize what is important in life. I'm glad that "Music is Worth Living For" resonated so well with you as well, because that song literally is what started my emotional upswing at the beginning of 2018. Having listened to a few of your other reviews, the analysis in this video made me hit that subscribe button! Love your style and energy, man.
The best part is "Ever Again" is a reworked version of "Everybody's Raging" from the Japan only "Party All Goddamn Night" EP, and it really feels like a more mature track. LOL COOL
this album is hard for me to revisit because its just so grand and relentlessly positive but man i would be lying if i said total freedom wasnt one of my favorite rock songs from the 2010s. the buildup contextualizes the grandiosity of the sound and it reads less like a letter of encouragement to the listener and more like a retelling of the loss of true innocence and becoming more jaded and judgemental with age. not earth shattering in its lyricism but an interesting angle and those vocals are the best on any andrew wk song out there
Great review, I think you nailed it. Andrew's music/history is fascinating and I absolutely love the I Get Wet album, but when You're Not Alone came out, I was blown away. I was a fan beforehand but this one solidified me as a "massive fan" you could say. The whole party philosophy is refreshing - it was back in the beginning and it is even more so now. This album is, in a way, a rock version of Tony Robbins, which is pretty awesome in my opinion. Unfortunately when some people hear Tony's name or the idea of "self help" they shut down, but you don't have to subscribe to that idea in order to enjoy music. It definitely resonates very personally with me, and from all the things I've read from others (especially on Twitter), it seems to resonate with many. Super excited for his new one which is apparently coming this year
Hey bro. Are you okay? Just want to tell you that I always watch your reviews and thankful that you do this one. Else, I won't be introduced to good music that keeps me going on life. And you should too. We are here for you bro.
I wasn't sure how I felt the first time I listened to it. I love it now. After a long day at work it's nice to hear that you're not alone. It has improved my resolve.
I'd never listened to anything by Andrew before I saw the yellow flannel, and decided to give this a listen before watching the review, and I have to say I agree wholeheartedly. I really enjoyed this album, all 3 times I've listened to it today. It's not artsy, sure, but it's not trying to be, and that's okay. Something doesn't have to be artsy or hyper experimental to be good. Thanks for putting me on to this.
Hearing Anthony giving praise to I Get Wet just makes me so happy. My second favorite album of all time. I will always treasure the first time I ever heard the album in full.
Took me a minute to get around to this album, but it's been on constant rotation ever since. Faves are "Music Is Worth Living For", "Break the Curse", and "Total Freedom".
I was never an Andrew W.K. fan before this album (not a hater, just wasn't on my radar), and then I was tasked to review this record. And holy shit. Unexpected contender for AOTY, in my opinion. This shit is just seriously great. This is the record I needed right now.
I can’t help but feel like this album is in conversation with Rock & Roll Suicide, David Bowie’s final song as Ziggy Stardust. Even if it’s not intended as a literal reference to Ziggy’s cry of “You’re not alone” during that song’s dramatic crescendo, there’s a similar sort of message between them, that even in your times of struggle and darkness you can renew your strength by returning to your inspirations, returning to the art that moves you, finding affirmation and support there.
