At minute 5.55 the officer on the right in the wardroom is Mike Tuohy, the mad irishman. Later he was the skipper on the submarine Ocelot and I remember after one of his 'nights out' finding him in the officers head, where he had slept all night. I'm still amazed that we managed to get him out of there and sober enough to take the boat to sea an hour later when the FOST team came aboard from Faslane for final sea trials. A great guy respected by all who knew him. Ready Aye Ready.
@Time Bandit most boats have a Tuohy and they are usually the most respected Officers aboard.

We painted over pennant numbers in 1966 ,we received the order to paint out the number when we were in San Diego ( on board Taciturn ).

I enjoyed the video though I question the year (1970). I was drafted to Artemis from spare crew (OEMech 2) at Dolphin from June 1970 for six months and we operated out of Dolphin all that time.
David Vervaet Depends when some it was filmed... Were you on her when she dipped her stern whilst tied up?
The date the film was made was when I was a crew member. And Nope! She sank alongside the wall with my relief still on board. I was however the first back aboard her when she was recovered to the surface. I was responsible for removing the battery links and ensuring there was no juice left in em.
@@davidvervaet976 On 1 July 1971 Artemis sank in 9 metres of water while moored alongside HMS Dolphin at Gosport submarine base while refueling. Due to unspecified causes, the sub dipped by the bow and cabling which was encumbering the forward hatch prevented it from being closed. The bow filled and the sub went to the bottom.
Raised 6 July and decommissioned, sold to be broken up for scrap on 12 December 1971. Scrapped at Portsmouth in 1972.

An unidentified stoker attempted sabotaging the sub by placing a signal grenade inside the engine.
21 Jan 1956
Was in collision with a motor trawler in the Channel off the Isle of Wight while on exercises. Artemis sustained no damage and carried on.
1963
While on loan to Canada, caused major concern when she failed to surface in response to signals during manoeuvres, 700 nm off New York.
Canadian planes and ships started a frantic search, but Artemis surfaced safely an hour and a half later.

@granskare That's the sonar.
Sadly, the vessel in the video, HMS Artemis sank the year after the video was made. she was refuelling at HMS Dolphin and dipped by the stern. There was a flood and she sank in 30ft of water. Luckily all aboard were able to escape. She was scrapped the next year.

I see that it was permissible to smoke back then inside the submarine. Is that still allowed on today's submarines?
@Paul DG No, because it is forbidden to smoke in the workplace unless a separate area is set aside especially for that purpose. Vaping, after considerable debate and research has been deemed safe to do on board the submarine. On Skimmers, the upper deck is used for smoking (and again in certain places only, as proscribed by the Captain) unless fuelling/ammunitioning ship, in which case a pipe will be made to warn all on the upper deck of the hazards.

Well even at this time, the laundrymen were hired from Hong Kong, not on the subs obviously!
