  • “Voyage North” is a color film that focuses on operations on the HMS Artemis (S49), an Amphion class submarine built in 1946 during a voyage. The official British government film, produced circa 1970, is an impressionistic account of life on the submarine told partly through the eyes of Lt. Ellison, a new submarine officer. After seeing the sub while pulling into a dock in Copenhagen, Denmark, we move inside at mark 02:24 for a training exercise on escape routes in the event of an emergency. As the film moves along we see classroom instruction and additional onboard training, with Ellison coming aboard at mark 06:30. Setting course for a survey mission north of Iceland, Ellison is shown standing watch at mark 08:30 as the crew topside critique their new shipmate at mark 09:53. A series of scenes from the sub follow as the camera captures day-to-day operations before the vessel approaches an ice flow at mark 13:50 and the disembark for an award ceremony, a group photo, and winter sports including snowball fights, sledding, and ice fishing. Artemis leaves the frozen north starting at mark 16:16 and we return to more routine scenes before the vessel returns to Copenhagen.
HMS Artemis (P449) was an Amphion-class submarine of the Royal Navy, built by Scotts Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. of Greenock and launched 28 August 1946. On 1 July 1971 Artemis sank in 9 metres (30 ft) of water while moored at the shore establishment HMS Dolphin at Gosport during refueling. Because the crew had negligently run cables through the hatches which were left open, the submarine began to fill with water and subsequently sank at her moorings. Three men were trapped inside but rescued. She was raised on 6 July and decommissioned, sold to be broken up for scrap on 12 December 1971.

My late Father-in-law was commander of Artemis in 1969 (Lt. Cdr. T.J. Austin, he wasn’t responsible for the sinking!). When we were able to extract stories from him which on occasion he was reluctant to discuss they were most interesting. It’s the first time I’ve seen this movie, what a way to live!

I worked on board the RMAS Kinloss salvage vessel. We sailed from Dover to Gosport during the night that Artemis sank at her mooring with 3 crew members trapped in the forward tower. I personally steered the Kinloss all the way from Dover to Gosport because I was the only crew member that could steer the vessel in a straight line therefore saving time & distance. The voyage took us about 12 hours then we all had to set to work on the lifting operation, ie, preparing hawsers, cables , piping & other equipment required for the lift. Our diver named Joe connected an air hose to the hull of Artemis & we began pumping air into the sub. We shared a sling between 2 salvage vessels under Artemis & began lifting her from the vacuum of the mud. The lift was very slow, a couple of inches every couple of hours, during which time the 3 trapped crew members used a submarine emergency escape method after an egress had been cut to allow escape. All 3 surfaced safely amid cheers from the salvage vessel crews. Once Artemis was freed from the seabed mud it surfaced rapidly with its forward tower surfacing between the 2 salvage vessels. The whole operation took 3 days in which we all had little or no sleep. We all had to line up on deck to have our photograph taken, after which we were allowed to return to Dover to continue out normal work of maintaining navigation buoys & mooring buoys on the east coast off Kings Lynn & Boston Lincolnshire.

H.M.S Artemis bring back memories of my time on the Odin. I was Drafted to the Artemis when she was in Chatham Dockyard for refit in 1965to1966. and a memory never to be forgotten was the fact strange happenings occurred during one of my 12 hour night ship watch duty shook me up to some extent caused me to wait for my relief at 0600 sitting on a bollard in the cold .

Yes maybe! But during my life I have never believed in Ghosts or sightings. But during that night alone on watch I saw and heard .
I have written about it and done some research , I could tell you what happened BUT it would only lead to some smart arse remarks and disbelief by most followers of these videos.
Any one interested or has further information it will be most appreciated .

Some of this footage (the Medway/Chatham shots) appears in 'The Champions' TV series made in late 1967.

Does any one know of any supernatural goings on in the Artemis?
