Really great work. I loved watching this, and seeing how this therapy helped Elan. Would love to see more therapy sessions like this, and also including other parts of Narrative Therapy, like the landscape of identity, etc.
really enjoyed the flow between the therapist and client and being able to observe the process- thank you, felt very natural and organic-very helpful indeed
@@iche9373 Thanks for your comment about culture here. In my view, the counselor is utilizing Narrative Therapy to help Elan learn to make sense of a tragic situation that occurred in his life. To me, this represents meeting the client where he is without bringing in an external agenda. If the therapist had encouraged Elan to move towards a more Eurocentric view, that would be more indicative of a White-savior agenda. Just my two cents here and again, I appreciate your comment.
Amazing to see in action! Thank you, currently writing a paper on NT in my clinical mental health grad program! Definitely a different approach but thankful for this demonstration!
Thanks so much, and I am glad this was helpful for you! Here is another Narrative Therapy video that may also be helpful: ua-cam.com/video/-7A-xfUwyV8/v-deo.htmlsi=qSuxzS5JsKrbtojo
It is a Spirit The Dark Spirit of Extreme Guilt I think The therapist is using his own language Grandpa is a significant other in Elans life In our culture Grandmothers Grandfathers and Spirits are very significant. Dark Spirit is a name That Elan continued to refer to . One of the struggles I think in therapy is bringing spirituality into the room. Especially in this situation. Spirituality is important in First Nations culture. My sese is that investigating that aspect here there would be more unique outcomes or sparkling moments present .
By acknowledging and creating an awareness and creating tools to empower our inner values and morals. Through respectful relationships building a narrative/dialogue that discerns the fears and anxieties from our goals and solutions. Definitely a strength based model that would work wonders for urban social justice and bicultural and multicultural affairs as this is also an indigenous and holistic method.
Thanks so much, and I fully agree. Narrative Therapy provides the space for clients to fully embrace their stories. The opportunities for empowering individuals from marginalized populations through multicultural therapy applications are numerous.
Was introduced to NT in my Advanced counseling class, this video really helps with explaining how it works, and how you can demonstrate it. It's been very helpful! Thanks for the upload :)
Thank you for sharing this. I'm currently trying to figure out if NT is the right modality for me, and this gives a much clearer picture of what it entails from the client's end.
It was a great video, however, an important principle of a narrative approach is to view the client as the expert. I felt like the therapist within this video was the expert.
Thanks so much, and I appreciate your comment. Part of the challenge for Narrative Therapists is educating clients about the externalizing process and then creating a space for them to actively utilize it in their lives. The education process allows each client to take on the important role of expert, so therapists need to facilitate this as carefully and authentically as possible.
@@TherapySolutions I completely agree, while the client is the expert in their own life the therapist is the expert in change, psychoeducation is not always a quick process and this was a very clear example of how narrative therapy should be engaged with.
Yea, and isn’t this video problematic when the story shows also a white-savior narrative where a white therapist saves an indigenous non-white patient from the minority society?

Yea, but why does the patient have to be an indigenous person? Is this kind of a white-savior thing?
